    No plans for Netflix office, servers in Vietnam at this time

    Netflix does not have plans to open a representative office or place servers in Vietnam, but said it is working with authorities to meet tax obligations.

    The U.S. streaming giant said in a statement Friday that it is for governments to decide the rules on tax, and Netflix complies with applicable laws, but these do not require the company to open a local office, nor to place servers locally.

    It is “supportive of the implementation of a mechanism that will make it possible for foreign service providers like Netflix to collect and remit taxes in Vietnam,” it said.

    A mechanism for this does not currently exist but should be set up in the near future, and it is discussing best practices with the authorities to make it practical for all, it added.

    In other markets where it does not have a local office, it is still able to contribute to growth, remit taxes and protect consumers through simple offshore registration, it claimed.

    This contradicts what a Vietnamese tax official recently said. Vu Manh Cuong, director of the General Department of Taxation’s inspection agency, said on Tuesday that Netflix had been working with the Ministry of Finance and the tax department to set up a representative office and servers in Vietnam to declare tax.

    The department is working to assess Netflix’s revenues in Vietnam since its entry in 2016 for tax collection, he added.

    The Cybersecurity Law requires all foreign businesses which earn an income from online activities in Vietnam to store their data in the country and file tax returns.

    Authorities had earlier said that Netflix, which has around 300,000 subscribers in Vietnam and collects a monthly subscription of VND180,000-260,000 ($7.75-11.19), has never paid tax in the country.

    Other Southeast Asian countries have also been making moves to tax Netflix and other Internet giants. Indonesia imposed a 10 percent value-added tax on sales on technology firms including Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and Google in July, while Singapore has since January required subscribers to Netflix and other overseas digital services to pay a 7 percent goods and tax.

    China said to insert spy chips into Supermicro servers

    An explosive report has accused Chinese intelligence agencies of sneaking a tiny chip into servers assembled in China for US chip maker Supermicro that introduced hardware vulnerabilities enabling stealth access to any network using the altered devices.

    US investigators have found evidence of an unprecedented supply chain attack on servers used by companies including Amazon and Apple.

    The allegedly compromised components were used by video streaming company Elemental Technologies for its services compressing video files and optimizing them for different devices.

    According to the report, a third party company hired by AWS to scrutinize Elemental’s security in advance of Amazon’s potential acquisition of the company discovered a tiny microchip in a sample server that was not part of the original design. Apple was also reportedly a major Supermicro customer, using its components for a global network of data centers, the report adds.

    This chip allegedly allows for the creation of a stealth doorway into any network using the altered servers. The investigation reportedly subsequently found evidence that the chips had been inserted by four subcontractors of Supermicro’s primary manufacturers for its motherboards, which are based in Shanghai and Taiwan.

    Interactions between Chinese officials, manufacturers and middlemen in China intercepted by investigators suggest that middlemen offered bribes and threats to coerce the subcontractors to insert the chips on behalf of a PLA unit specializing in hardware attacks, the report claims.

    But Amazon, Apple and Supermicro have all subsequently released statements challenging the report. Apple has been particularly firm in its denial of the report, stating that the company has repeatedly found “absolutely no evidence” to support Bloomberg’s claims, and has consistently provided statements refuting almost all aspects of the story as it relates to Apple.

    Supermicro has also stated that it is unaware of any investigation and has not been contacted by the government, while China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has insisted that the nation “is a resolute defender of cybersecurity” and that supply chain security is a concern of all governments.

    At SUSECON 2017, Huawei and Linux-based operating system developer SUSE announced a expanded partnership to build a more reliable Mission Critical Server for enterprise customers.

    The server will support memory module hot swap, helping customers slash unplanned maintenance time while keeping their production systems up and running.

    The solution will run on Huawei’s 16-/32-socket KunLun Mission Critical Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP Applications. It strengthens both companies’ lineup of enterprise mission-critical offerings.

    The Huawei KunLun Mission Critical Server is specifically engineered for critical workloads such as enterprise database, decision support, and business processing. Supporting 8, 16, or 32 Intel processors with up to 32 TB in-memory computing, the KunLun server is capable of processing massive amounts of data even in large-scale in-memory database systems.

    “Huawei is teaming up with SUSE to jointly launch the in-memory computing hot swap solution built on the Huawei 16-/32-socket KunLun Mission Critical Server and the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server RAS enhanced feature package,” Huawei IT server product line president Qiu Long said.

    “This solution will ensure continuous, stable running of enterprise business-critical applications and reduce unplanned downtime. Supporting memory online maintenance, it reduces unplanned system outage caused by memory faults to almost zero, thereby boosting the reliability of enterprise critical applications.”

    VMware, Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry (III) and the USA’s Methode Electronics have become the latest members of the Broadband Forum.

    The latest additions highlight recent developments within the Broadband Forum to address the constantly changing technological landscape and increase the focus of its work.

    The industry body is also working to collaborate more with open source communities and increase the amount of work it does in the software space.

    VMware, III and Methode Electronics will complement this, with all three companies having backgrounds in virtualization, electronics and R&D.

    The new members are already playing an active part in the Forum, with representatives attending the Forum’s most recent Quarterly Meeting, held in Berlin. Moving forward, they will continue to play a full role in activities and Working Groups.

    III believes its membership will enhance the prosperous development of industries and incubate new industries, as well as promote links between local industries and the rest of the world.

    “Actively participating with an international organization like the Broadband Forum is just the beginning for III,” commented Dr Ko-Yang Wang, director general of the III’s Industry Development Augmentation Division (IDAD).

    “Looking into the future, III fully supports the Forum’s new Broadband 20/20 vision and we are fully confident that its realization will be the next big thing for broadband.”

    The developments in Berlin – including the publication of the landmark Network Enhanced Residential Gateway (NERG) Virtualization Technical Report (TR-317), the first finished project in the Forum’s NFV realm – followed on from the Forum’s Special Meeting in Atlanta, where Service Providers gave their views and visions on how the network needs to develop.

    “We’re delighted to welcome VMware, III and Methode Electronics into the Broadband Forum family,” Broadband Forum CEO Robin Mersh said.

    “Our recent meetings have illustrated our ability to keep up with the rapid pace of change within the industry and work together to create a faster and highly relevant Broadband Forum.
