Coupang Bounces Back: Q1 Shows Promising Growth Amidst Ongoing Recovery Efforts

Coupang, the South Korean e-commerce giant, has made a steady start to Fiscal Year 2026, according to its first quarter results. The data indicates a slow but steady recovery following disruptions experienced towards the end of last year.

    Stronger Financial Performance

The Q1 results unveiled a noticeable growth in the company’s revenue, which rose to $8.5 billion. This marks an 8 percent year-over-year increase, slightly outpacing analysts’ expectations. Coupang’s financial performance improved during February and March, following a less-than-stellar beginning to the year.

Management indicated that January was the most challenging month, with a decline in order frequency, membership engagement, and overall customer interactions. However, these metrics consistently improved throughout the quarter, pointing towards a positive trend.

Despite this promising uptick in performance, executives were quick to point out that the recovery process is not yet fully complete. According to founder Bom Kim, the company is committed to enhancing the customer experience that initially attracted shoppers to Coupang. The focus is not only on product commerce but also on the development of new offerings.

    Challenges and Future Prospects

While the revenue showed positive growth during the quarter, the company’s profitability took a hit. Lower earnings were reported, driven by a variety of temporary factors and investment-related activities. The company’s management cited multiple pressures that are currently impacting margins, including increased promotional campaigns to re-engage customers during this recovery phase.

Coupang remains optimistic about its future, reiterating its commitment to expanding new offerings and penetrating international markets, despite the potential impact on profitability. In Taiwan, for example, the company is laying the groundwork for an enhanced customer experience.

Kim highlighted the company’s last-mile delivery network, which guarantees next-day delivery, saying it now covers the majority of their volume and is continuously expanding. This initiative is still in its early stages in Taiwan, but early feedback from customers has been overwhelmingly positive.

Looking forward, Coupang is anticipating continued improvement during the second quarter with minimal lingering effects from previous disruptions.

  • No entertainment shows, only movies for Netflix in Vietnam

No entertainment shows, only movies for Netflix in Vietnam

Starting Monday Netflix will remove all entertainment and reality shows from its platform in Vietnam and only distribute film-related content to comply with local laws.

The U.S.-based streaming service would only show films that have been classified, the Authority of Broadcasting and Electronic Information said in a recent release.

In Vietnam, film and entertainment shows fall under different categories and are subject to different regulations.

Distributors of entertainment shows need to set up a company in Vietnam, but film distributors do not.

Netflix has to remove content entertainment and reality shows such as “Love on the Spectrum,” “Longest Third Date” and “Down For Love.”

After the decree on entertainment shows came into effect in 2023, some platforms withdrew from Vietnam, including U.S.-based Amazon’s Prime Video service which shut down in October after a seven-year presence.

China’s Iqiyi was flagged the same month for distributing entertainment shows since it has registered only to provide film-related content.

The broadcasting authority said last year that the enforcement of such regulations aims to ensure fair competition between domestic and international television businesses.

Earlier foreign platforms benefited from regulatory gaps, with some avoiding taxes or distributing prohibited content, it said.

“New regulations, issued to ensure fairness, have caused some companies to cease operations in Vietnam,” Le Quang Tu Do, the authority’s director, said at the time.

“Adjusting business models to comply with local laws is a routine part of doing business.”

Google TV adds new landing pages to simplify navigation

Google announced today via a blog post a set of new improvements coming to the Google TV platform that will add four new landing pages in the United States to make it simpler for viewers to access their preferred forms of entertainment without having to switch between different applications. These updates were considered after recent research has found that the average household subscribes to more than five different entertainment apps.

These new landing pages, which can be found directly below the row of apps on the “For you” tab, will give you quick access to the best entertainment in the categories of Movies, Shows, Families, and Spanish-language content, without requiring you to navigate from app to app, and make it easier to discover new things. Below are the details:

The Family page is the new place to go for entertainment that is suitable for families, with content ranging from old favorites to recent releases. It is not difficult to find something suitable for the entire family to watch together if it has a PG or lower content rating. And there’s no need to worry, because even when your children watch their own shows on their own television, they’ll still have access to the kid’s profile where they can watch all of their favorites.

The Español page is the new home for the best Spanish-language entertainment, including telenovelas, live TV, movies, and shows. You will also have access to well-known apps in Spanish, such as Pantaya and FlixLatino, in addition to a library of dubbed and subtitled movies and television shows. Google is striving to make it much simpler for you to watch the entertainment that you enjoy, regardless of whether you are a native speaker of Spanish, live in a bilingual household, or are simply someone who enjoys content that is presented in Spanish.

The Movies page allows you to search through thousands of films based on their title, genre, or subject matter, all on one simple page. You will also receive personalized recommendations for films that you might enjoy, in addition to information on recently released films and films that are currently popular.

It has never been simpler to watch back-to-back episodes of your favorite show, whether it’s “The White Lotus” or “Yellowstone.” You can get new releases from all of your subscriptions in one convenient location by visiting the Shows page, where you can also view popular shows and explore personalized topics. In addition, when one show is over, you will be given suggestions for other shows that you might like to watch afterward.

Google also states that several improvements are being made to the navigation system, one of which is moving the profile switcher to the top left corner so that you can switch between profiles in a seamless manner. The search bar will also be relocated to the far right of the screen, and a new button for quick settings will be added. These updates will begin rolling out today globally on Chromecast with Google TV and other Google TV devices, such as those manufactured by Hisense, Philips, Sony, and TCL.

  • Spotify rolls out new feed to its mobile app to help users find live shows

Spotify rolls out new feed to its mobile app to help users find live shows

Spotify has just announced a new feature aimed at users who typically search for their favorite creators’ live events within the app. Previously known as Concert Hub, the feature has been renamed to Live Events Feed and received a handful of improvements.

First off, you’ll be able to find the new feed by search Live Events in the Spotify app. This is the service’s new place where users can find live events in their local area, personalized for them. Spotify revealed that it’s been supported by various ticketing partners who helped make the new feature more useful.

Ticketmaster, AXS, DICE, Eventbrite, and See Tickets are just some of Spotify’s ticketing partners that are sourcing the listings in the Live Events Feed. It’s an interesting feature if you’re interested in live events, but it’s more helpful for artists as live shows were terribly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to being able to find live events of their favorite artists, Live Events Feed also includes a new messaging tool to offer fans personalized recommendations for upcoming live events based on their listening habits. On top of that, users can choose to be notified about potential live events in their local area.

Finally, Spotify says that it has also embedded show discovery into their app. So, if an artist that you’re listening to has an upcoming tour date, Spotify will show that live event to you in the app, while you’re listening.

  • Netflix is working on launching a live streaming feature

Netflix is working on launching a live streaming feature

Netflix could be working on a new way to keep you as a subscriber. After rapidly losing subscriptions, the streaming giant added a mobile gaming platform, is reportedly planning to introduce an ad-supported tier, and — now — it is looking to broaden its content with live streaming shows.

Netflix has confirmed to Deadline that it’s in the early stages of launching live streaming for its unscripted shows and stand-up specials. This might allow Netflix to broadcast reunions of some of its series and provide live voting for competitive productions such as Dance 100.

The new feature could also be used to broadcast live comedy specials. For example, Netflix recently held an in-person comedy festival called Netflix Is a Joke Fest, which featured over 300 stand-up performances. The company will make recordings of around 12 of them available to watch soon. But if it decides to organize the festival again, instead of releasing only a fraction of the event, it could broadcast the whole thing while it is happening, thus letting its subscribers get the full experience.

Having live shows will allow Netflix to stay in the race with major competitor Disney+, who is already acquiring and broadcasting multiple live shows — like Dancing with the Stars and the Academy Awards. It is highly likely that Netflix is also planning to develop other formats, specifically designed for the live setting.

At the current moment, we don’t have any information on when exactly the platform plans to launch this new feature.

  • Netflix adds a ‘Double Thumbs Up’ button to further improve its recommendations

Netflix adds a ‘Double Thumbs Up’ button to further improve its recommendations

In an attempt to better attune its recommendations to its users, Netflix introduced a third button to its rating system. Yes, from now on, Netflix will have not two, but three reaction buttons: a thumbs up, a thumbs down, and a double thumbs up button.

According to Netflix, the thumbs-up button shows Netflix’s algorithms what movies and TV shows you like, but the double thumbs-up button shows which movies and TV shows you love. Based on which movies and shows received your double thumbs-up reaction, Netflix’s algorithms will better recommend similar movies and shows that “what you enjoy.”

As Netflix explained, if you reacted with a double thumbs up to the TV show Bridgerton, the platform may even recommend you more movies or series starring some of the show’s cast or other movies and shows from the same production company, which in this case is Shondaland.

Netflix’s double thumbs-up button is located next to the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons. You can see and use it now on the TV, web, and mobile versions of the service. And as Netflix said, “Don’t be shy. Express yourself and tell us what you’re loving on Netflix. You know you want to.”

  • No original shows at launch for Apple TV service

No original shows at launch for Apple TV service

Apple’s TV service is still a no show, but that’s probably going to change very soon. The Cupertino-based company plans to use the March 25 event to outline how it will take on rivals like Amazon and Netflix, a new Bloomberg report claims. While Apple is gearing up to launch its TV service, the company needs to sign deals with Pay-TV programmers like HBO, Showtime, and Starz, which in return must decide whether or not Apple is either a threat or a potential partner.

If everything goes well, Apple TV will offer HBO and Showtime TV shows at launch, but no original content, people familiar with the matter claim. Apple’s own movies and TV shows are still in development and might not be ready until later this year at the earliest. Although Apple may take the wraps off its TV service this month, it’s almost certain that it will not be actually available until fall.

Another important thing to note is that Apple plans to integrate the TV service into the iPhone, iPad and set-top box’s TV app, which will offer two types of content: Apple original shows or content bought/funded by the company, as well as content from third-party media companies like HBO and Showtime.

The same report mentions that the first partnerships are expected to be closed as early as Friday, but since the talks are still going on, it’s impossible to predict what will happen.
