    SK Telecom (SKT) announced that its Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho and CEO Ryu Young-sang met with Surangel Whipps. Jr., the president of the Republic of Palau, to discuss cooperation to upgrade Palau’s communication infrastructure.

    SK Telecom also asked the Palauan government to support Busan’s bid to host the “World Expo 2030”.

    At the meeting, Vice Chairman Park Jung-ho said, “The World Expo 2030 Busan highlights the seriousness of the global climate change and the need for each country to take an active response. It will also serve as a great opportunity for Palau to experience Korea’s innovative technologies and methodologies to respond to climate change.”

    SK Telecom announced that its two technologies related to the control and interworking of quantum cryptography communication networks were adopted as new work items at the ITU-T meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland.

    The South Korean telecom service provider said in a press release that these latest solutions will be given international certification standards through its talks among member countries of the ITU-T.

    SK Telecom’s two technologies chosen as work items are: Quantum Key Distribution Network Interworking – Software Defined Networking Control; and Framework of Quantum Key Distribution Network Federation.

    The company said these latest innovations serve as an important tool for the popularization of quantum cryptography communication technologies.

    One of these technologies, the Software Defined Networking Control System for Interworking of Quantum Key Distribution Networks, enables telecommunication operators to run their existing communication networks and QKD networks holistically and efficiently.

    Meanwhile, the company compares the Quantum Key Distribution Network Federation to international roaming between mobile operators. This technology enables the delivery of quantum-safe communication services no matter whose QKD network they are on by “supporting interworking/federation between QKD networks of different service providers.”

    SKT’s Chief Development Officer Ha Min-yong, said, “The approval of these two items by ITU-T carries a significant meaning as they will serve a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of quantum cryptography communication throughout the globe.”

    SK Telecom announced that it has collaborated with the startup firms AhnLab Blockchain Company and Atomrigs Lab to develop its digital wallet service called Web3 wallet.

    In a press release, the company said the digital wallet services will integrate different types of virtual assets, including cryptocurrencies and NFTs, among others, which can be used to verify a person’s identity.

    The Web3 wallet service will be based on the e-wallet technology to be developed by Atomrigs Lab. After its completion, SK Telecom and AhnLab Blockchain Company will take over the implementation, while Atomrigs will deliver technical support services to their operations.

    The company said in the statement, “Users can safely manage their digital assets through the Web3 Wallet and use it as a point of contact for various Web3-oriented distributed app services.”

    The three companies met during a signing ceremony held at AhnLab Blockchain Company’s headquarters building in Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province in South Korea.

    South Korea’s SK Telecom, retailer Shinsegae Group and private equity firm MBK Partners were among those that entered non-binding, preliminary bids for the sale of eBay Inc’s South Korean business, the telecom company, and two sources with knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.

    EBay Korea operates open market e-commerce platforms Gmarket, Auction and G9, and was South Korea’s third-largest e-commerce firm in 2020 with 12.8% market share, according to Euromonitor.

    The sources declined to be identified as not authorized to talk to the media. MBK Partners, Shinsegae Group, and eBay Korea declined to comment.

    Seoul-based analysts said that eBay hopes to fetch up to 5 trillion won (S4.42 billion) with the sale.

    However, they said the actual sale price may be lower, due to its recent drop in market share compared to rivals such as Korea’s No. 1 e-commerce firm Coupang, and disadvantages of the unit’s traditional “open market” form of e-commerce which simply connects sellers with buyers.

    EBay Korea’s market share has been overtaken in recent years by Coupang, which directly handles inventory, differentiated itself with speedy delivery and raised around $4.6 billion in a blockbuster New York listing earlier this month, as well as Naver Corp, which operates South Korea’s dominant online search portal.

    EBay Korea’s 2020 revenue was estimated to be about 1.3 trillion won, with a 5.3% on-year increase in transactions, compared to a 19% growth in South Korean e-commerce market, KTB Investment & Securities analyst Kim Jin-woo said.

    SK Telecom Co., South Korea’s largest mobile carrier, said Monday it is partnering with Amazon.com, Inc. to allow South Koreans to have easier access to products on the U.S. e-commerce giant’s platform.

    The carrier said users of its e-commerce unit 11Street Co. can directly purchase the U.S. company’s products on its platform. It did not provide a specific time frame for the service’s launch.

    SK Telecom said it has also made an agreement with Amazon so that the U.S. tech giant has the right to acquire a stake in 11Street based on the South Korean e-commerce company’s progress in the local market.

    The announcement comes as SK Telecom is currently planning an initial public offering (IPO) for 11Street.

    The carrier said in its third-quarter conference call that the e-commerce unit is among its list of subsidiaries, such as new mobility spinoff T map Mobility Co., that will pursue IPOs.

    The e-commerce unit’s sales reached 135.7 billion won (US$122.7 million) in the third quarter, up 8 percent from a year earlier, according to SK Telecom.

    The South Korean Telecommunications operator announced the signing of the Memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with the Incheon Free Economic Zone (IFEZ) Authority and some others who are planning to build smart infrastructure with 5G and self-driving elements.

    The deals are meant to strengthen the country’s position in smart city development with regards to 5G network deployment, autonomous vehicles, and connected hospitals.

    “We will work closely with the IFEZ Authority to accelerate the IFEZ’s transition to a smart city powered by SK Telecom’s 5G network and mobility technologies,” said Park Jin-hyo, the operator’s CTO.

    As part of the deal, SK Telecom is expected to create a machine-readable HD map of the IFEZ area (which is comprised of Yeongjong, Cheongna, and Songdo) with information to help support autonomous vehicles. This information includes road conditions, lanes, and speed limits.

    “The HD map will b built with Dynamic Data Platform, a 5G-based real-time update solution for HD maps. Dynamic Data Platform automatically updates HD maps upon receiving road observation data from Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) over 5G network,” said Jin-hyo.

    He added, “SK Telecom plans to install ADAS and 5G communication modules to public transport vehicles and official government cars in the IFEZ area to detect all changes in the road environment.”

    Both parties aim to work together to achieve smarter and safer transportation by taking into account the policies that will be put in place. In order to do this, they aim to build a data hub that will enable them to oversee the floating population.

    Another deal that was devised, was between SK Telecom and Yonsei University Health System which will provide 5G network solutions and smart technology to hospitals. The smart hospital that is in the making is forecasted to be opened by the beginning of 2020.

    “The 5G-powered digital hospital will be equipped with SK Telecom’s Ai speaker- NUGU- to enable patients with physical difficulties to easily control their beds, lighting, and TV with their voice. They can even use NUGU Call service to get medical assistance in case of emergencies,” SK Telecom stated.

    The hospital is also expected to have AR-powered indoor navigated which will use 3D mapping technologies to “enhance the convenience of patients and visitors”.

    This will allow patients in isolation wards to receive visitors through holographic projections. Additionally, facial recognition will be used on medical worker to ensure greater safety and security for the patients. “Unlike other access control systems that require some kind of contact – fingerprint, pass, etc- the face recognition system allows contact-free entry to help reduce the risk of infection”.

    They also plan to create an incubator for startups called Venturepolis which will be based in Songdo. Venturepolis will support startups that work with smart office solutions.
