  • Snapchat+ officially launched a premium subscription

Snapchat+ officially launched a premium subscription

Snap has just announced the launch of a new premium tier for customers who want a little bit more features and faster support. The announcement comes less than a month since another social app, Telegram introduced a similar service for those who want extra features.

Snap’s new premium tier is called Snapchat+ and is available in Snapchat for $3.99/month. Unlike Telegram that already informed customers about what they’ll get for the premium tier, Snap’s announcement is rather vague.

According to the social company, Snapchat+ will offer “a collection of exclusive, experimental, and pre-release features.” As far as the reasoning behind the premium tier, Snap claims that the subscription will help the company provide fans willing to pay with new Snapchat features and “prioritized support.”

For the time being, Snapchat+ will only be available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. However, Snap confirmed plans to expand availability of its premium tier to more countries over time. Is this something that you’d pay for because it’s useful or do you think it’s just a cash grab?

  • Snapchat upgrades Custom Stories feature, adds more safety improvements

Snapchat upgrades Custom Stories feature, adds more safety improvements

Snapchat’s latest new feature is trying to make users socialize more within the social app. Shared Stories is a new way for Snapchat users to involve friends in the creation of Stories. The new feature is the evolution of Custom Stories, which previously allowed users to make a Story and add friends to view and contribute.

With the new Shared Stories feature, Snapchat users who have been added to a group can add their friends too. Designed with privacy in mind, Snaps sent to a Shared Story delete after 24 hours. Also, these Shared Stories do not have any chat component, so conversations will remain private between friends.

Additionally, Snap revealed that content will be carefully moderated using a mix of automatic language detection and new community review tools. More importantly, Snapchat users will be notified once they join a Shared Story with someone they’ve blocked, allowing them to leave the Shared Story if they want too.

The new Shared Stories feature is now rolling out to Snapchat users across the world on all supported platforms, but it might take a few days to reach everyone.

  • Snapchat parent Snap reports its first profitible quarter ever

Snapchat parent Snap reports its first profitible quarter ever

Yesterday we told you that Facebook parent Meta said that Apple’s App Tracking Transparency (ATT) feature, which allows iOS users to opt-out of being tracked for the purposes of receiving custom online ads, will cost Meta $10 billion in revenue this year. That bit of news, along with Meta announcing that it will fall short of Wall Street’s expectations for first-quarter 2022 revenue, sent the company’s shares down 26.4% on Thursday to $237.76, a loss of $85.24.

Another company that has been affected by Apple’s ATT is Snap, the parent company of messaging app Snapchat. But the latter had a much better experience last year than Facebook/Meta had and even reported today the first quarterly profit in company history.

For the fourth quarter of 2021 Snap had revenue of $1.3 billion, up 42% year-over-year. Net income for the three-month period hit $23 million, the first time that the company was in the black during any quarter.

In 2021, Snap grossed $4.1 billion, up 64% compared to the same quarter a year ago. The company still was in the red for the entire year, but the net loss declined 48% to $488 million on an annual basis. Snap Chief Financial Officer Derek Andersen said that the company’s first quarterly profit and the improvement in the amount of red ink it spilled in 2021 can be attributed to how the company’s advertising business “began to recover from the impact of the iOS platform changes quicker than we anticipated.”

During regular trading hours on Thursday, Snap shares declined $7.57 or 23.60% to $24.50. Most investors figured that Snap would be making a similar grim announcement about Apple’s ATT as Facebook did. Instead, after the earnings report was released, Snap soared $14.50 or 59.18% to $39. That is still far off the 52 week high above $83.

Snap says that it has developed tools to help advertisers adjust to the large number of iOS users who do not want to be tracked for custom advertisements. Jeremi Gorman, Snap’s chief business officer, admitted that it will take time to adjust but said “We are pleased with the early progress.”

Other companies have also reported that the market for digital advertising is strong. Google reported a 33% year-over-year hike in total ad revenue which includes Search (up 36% over last year), and YouTube (up 25.3% on an annual basis). Microsoft foreshadowed its upcoming earnings report when it said that the ad market is strong for LinkedIn ads, and for ads on its Bing search engine.

While Meta forecasts a shortfall for its first-quarter profits, Snap expects revenue for the quarter to reach $1.08 billion topping analysts’ expectations. In addition, Snapchat’s Daily Active Users (DAU) rose 20% in Q4 to 319 million. DAU numbers improved sequentially and year-over-year in North America, Europe, and the Rest of the word.

Also, the Daily Active Users number has seen 20% year-over-year growth for five consecutive quarters. That is due to the strong usage of the Snapchat app by teens and young adults.

Snap also noted that it has been investing in its AR platform and revealed that its 18 New Year’s Eve Lenses generated more than 7 billion impressions. New features have been added to its Lens Studio including “a new Sounds Library, real-world physics, world mesh, and an API library for real-time data.

Snapchat also released a feature for the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro called “Quick Tap to Snap” allowing users of those two phones to access the Snapchat camera with two simple taps on the lockscreen. And Snap’s first original programming, “The Me and You Show,” starring Snapchatters and their friends, reached more than 50 million viewers.

And for those Disney fans out there, new Lenses were released featuring characters like Elsa from Frozen and Timon from The Lion King.

The difference between Meta and Snap is that Snap has been able to work around Apple’s ATT and rolled with the punches. Facebook/Meta yelled “bloody murder” and spent its time picking on Apple instead of finding a solution as Snap did. That’s why Meta shares collapsed by over $85 on Thursday and Snap shares are poised to rise over 50% on Friday morning.

  • Snapchat announces Snap Games and Snap Originals programs

Snapchat announces Snap Games and Snap Originals programs

Snap, the company behind the Snapchat social network and services, announced earlier today a host of new features that will come to its mobile apps in the coming weeks. During its Snap Partner Summit, the social network company revealed two new programs that will be available to all Snapchat users, Snap Games, and Snap Originals.

Another major announcement concerns important improvements to the popular Snap Lenses. Also, a new set of development tools grouped together as Snap Kit, which will allow developers to include Snapchat functionality directly in their apps. But let’s start with the first major feature that Snapchat users will be given access to very soon: Snap Games. The new feature will be available right from the Chat bar within the Snapchat app on Android and iOS devices.

What’s really interesting about Snap Games is that you won’t have to install anything. Also, you’ll be able to see all your friends who are playing games, send them a message, play with them instantly and even talk like with voice chat.

Initially, Snap Games will be available with six mobile games: Bitmoji Party, Tiny Royale, Snake Squad, C.A.T.S. Drift Race, Zombie Rescue Squad, and Alphabear Hustle. Since Snap Games will begin rolling out for Android smartphones and iPhones today, you can expect to be able to check out the new feature very soon.

Snapchat starts offering original shows watchable on the go

Snap Originals is a series of shows such as documentaries, comedies, and teen dramas, which, as the name suggests, will be original. Snap also mentions that this original content will clearly stand out from the rest because of the way they’re told: “they’re personal, intimate, and made for the way you use your phone today.”

No less than 10 shows will be available at launch for those who want to check out Snap Originals: Two Sides, Can’t Talk Now, Sneakerheads, Commanders, Denton’s Death Date, While Black, BuzzFeed, Dead of Night, Compton Dreams, and Stranded with Sam and Colby.

The new Snap Originals will be available starting this week, but more series will be added in the coming months. Remember that you can watch these shows anywhere you are directly from your smartphone, as long as you have access to the internet.

Snapchat Lenses get upgraded to the next level

As far as the Lenses go, Snap announced that in just over a year after the feature was made available to users, more than 400,000 Lenses have been created by the Snapchat community. Moreover, users have played over 15 billion times with these Lenses.

To advance Lenses to the next level, Snap announced the addition of Creator Profiles, a new way to help Lens Creators to showcase their work and learn more about their audience.

Also, Snap introduced an easier method to find the right Lenses when you need them. Simply press and hold on your camera screen to scan the world around you. For example, you can scan a math problem to get the answer, or a product to see it listed on Amazon and learn about its price. You can even scan your dog to give it glasses, or a song to see who sings it.

Last but not least, Lens Studio has been updated to include more templates for those creators who prefer augmented reality over traditional Lenses, including Landmarkers. The update adds new templates for hand-tracking, body-tracking, and more, which can be used to create Lenses that might pop up when Snapchat users use Scan.
But there are more changes coming to Snapchat, such as App Stories, which allow users to share content directly from the Snapchat camera to a Story inside another app. And for creators, there are a few new kits that will allow them to share their custom stickers from their favorite services directly on a Snap.

The Creative Kit, Bitmoji Kit, and Ad Kit are now available for creators, each allowing Snapchat users to interact easier than ever with customized Snaps.

As mentioned earlier, all features announced today by Snap will be available starting this week, but some Snap Originals shows will go live in the coming months.

  • Snapchat will integrate a cool new feature early next month

Snapchat will integrate a cool new feature early next month

As a result of Instagram’s dominance, Snapchat is no longer growing – the platform has actually started losing daily active users. Parent company Snap is aware of this and, in order to boost interest in the platform, will soon introduce a big new feature.

According to a report by Cheddar, Snap will announce a new mobile gaming platform – codenamed “Project Cognac” – on April 4 at a Los Angeles summit for content and developer partners. The new platform will be integrated seamlessly into Snapchat and should feature a number of third-party games designed to work specifically within the app.

In terms of what games can be expected, no titles have been confirmed yet. However, the company does appear to be developing some in-house offerings. Snap is said to be working with gaming giant Tencent on some exclusive titles and it also acquired gaming studio Prettygreat last year – an employee at this studio is behind both “Fruit Ninja” and “Jetpack Joyride.”

The new games will provide an extra revenue stream for Snap, something that should please investors. At the moment, though, it’s unclear how the company will choose to monetize the games. Snap could either implement a variety of in-app purchases or rely solely on advertising. Alternatively, the social media giant could choose a combination of both.
