TikTok readying to enter Japan’s e-commerce market

Chinese social media platform TikTok will enter the online shopping industry in Japan within the next few months, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Sunday.

The company is preparing to recruit sellers soon for its e-commerce arm TikTok Shop in Japan, Nikkei said, citing a source involved in the operations.

TikTok Shop, where users can run livestreams selling everything from sneakers to eyeshadow and earn a commission on sales, is known for discounted products.

TikTok is looking to expand its business outside of the US, where it awaits a deal that will secure its presence in the country. In March, TikTok Shop launched to users in France, Germany, and Italy on Monday, expanding its reach further into Europe.

Last week, US president Donald Trump said a deal over the fate of the social media platform may have to wait, as he signaled a potential end to the tit-for-tat tariff hikes between the US and China that shocked markets.

Earlier, Trump had extended the deadline to spin off the US assets of TikTok for the second time in April and reassured a potential deal is still “on the table”.

The future of TikTok in the US, used by nearly half of all Americans, has been up in the air since a 2024 law, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, required China-based parent, ByteDance, to divest the app by January 19.

  • Instagram’s biggest update is here to improve your social life

Instagram’s biggest update is here to improve your social life

Instagram usually rolls out small updates that add new features and improvements quite often, but every few months it releases major updates that completely change the way users interact with various aspects of the ap

Earlier today, Instagram announced its biggest update for the year is making its way to users worldwide. The update focuses on the messaging experience, but Instagram also added new ways to share media, pin content, and made it easier to connect with people over DMs.

One of the features that had been missing from Instagram ever since the app provided its users with the ability to message others is translation support. The latest update addresses this issue and introduces message translation, allowing Instagram users from different countries to communicate in their native languages.

You can now use the translate feature in Instagram by holding down on the message sent or received in another language and tapping “Translate.” You should get a translation of the message below the original.

Besides bringing the translate message feature to its users, Instagram is also adding the ability to share songs in DMs. Simply open the sticker tray in a chat and tap on the “Music” option to search for a specific song in the app’s library. You can then tap on the track to send a 30-second preview of the song to your friends.

Another important new feature coming with the latest update is the ability to schedule messages. This comes in handy if you want to congratulate someone on a certain date, but you’re afraid you’re going to forget.

You can now schedule text messages in DMs by typing the text message and holding down on the send button. You’ll be able to select the date and time when you want the message to be sent. This feature can also be used to schedule reminders for various tasks.

But wait, there’s more! After introducing the ability to pin chat threads in a DM box, Instagram is now making it possible to pin specific messages to the top of any 1:1 or group chat. Users can try out the new feature by holding down on the message and tapping on “pin.” Up to three messages per conversation can be pinned at the moment.

Last but not least, Instagram is finally adding QR code support, which means that users can now add friends to their group chats by sharing a personalized QR. When your friend scans the QR code you shared, it will be automatically added to the chat.

To create a QR code invite, simply open the group chat and tap on the group name at the top. Select the invite link, then tap on QR code to view the QR code invite and share it with your friends via DM.

  • On Instagram, you can now send and receive private Story likes without piling up unnecessary DMs

On Instagram, you can now send and receive private Story likes without piling up unnecessary DMs

Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, announced on Twitter that Instagram is introducing a new feature called “Private Story Likes,” which allows Instagram users to like a Story without the platform sending a direct message to the Story’s author.

Before the Private Story Likes feature, to respond to a Story you could only send a direct message or an emoji reaction to the creator of the Story and when you reacted to someone’s Story, they always received a response in their DM inbox.

Users who have the Private Story Likes feature may now notice a new heart icon located between the Send Message field and the paper airplane sharing button when watching someone’s Story.

Also, the likes you receive or give on stories will be private and won’t have public counts, which means that only you will be able to see who liked your Story. If you want to see who liked your Story, you need to go to the viewer sheet of that particular Story, and there you will see a heart icon next to every viewer who liked your Story.

According to Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s idea for the Private Story Likes feature is for ‘people to express more support to each other’ and also to ‘clean up DMs a little bit.’ Adam Mosseri explained that Instagram’s goal is to make DMs more focused on conversations between you and your friends.
