  • Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo opened door

Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo opened door

This week, Starbucks celebrates the opening of the Starbucks Reserve® Roastery Tokyo, a four-story tribute to premium coffee quality, innovation and human connection. This will be the fifthRoastery globally, opening to the public on Thursday, February 28, at 7 a.m. JST, reaffirming the company’s 23-year commitment to Japan. The Roastery pays tribute to the important role that Starbucks Japan has played in shaping the foundation of the Company’s international growth. The Roastery introduces customers to more than 100 unique coffee and tea beverages and merchandise, as well as a menu of artisanal Princi Italian fare for the first time in Japan.

It also celebrates the Japanese culture of connection and craftsmanship through the first AMU Inspiration Lounge –from the Japanese “amu,” meaning “knit together”–to host community gathering events and is planned to become Starbucks first Specialty Coffee Association certified training location in Japan.

“As the first international market outside of North America, Starbucks Japan has contributed 23 years of innovation for the company globally,” said Kevin Johnson, CEO, Starbucks Coffee Company.

“The opening of the Tokyo Roastery will further amplify what Starbucks Japan has done across all stores in the market for more than two decades—innovating and delivering the finest quality coffee one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time.” Takafumi Minaguchi, CEO, Starbucks Japan, added, “The Roastery will amplify and inspire coffee passion across all Starbucks stores, and will serve as a catalyst for a new wave of growth centered on the customer experience and passion for coffee and service. Beginning with the “Make it Yours” campaign that will commence at every store in Japan upon the opening of the Roastery, customers will be invited to experience the first Starbucks coffee roasted exclusively in Tokyo, for Japan, and available in a variety of coffee beverage styles.”

Collaborative Design Highlights Japan’s Natural Beauty

Located in Tokyo’s vibrant and creative neighborhood of Nakameguro, the Roastery’s enchanting design was inspired by the famous cherry blossom trees lining the Meguro River.

The building’s glass walls and terraced floors seamlessly fold into the fabric of the neighborhood, bringing visitors eye-level with the cherry blossoms and the four seasons of the river to reflect the natural beauty and sense of harmony found across Japan.

The Tokyo Roastery is the only Starbucks Roastery location designed in collaboration with a local architect from the ground up.

The exterior was brought to life in collaboration with renowned Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Envisioned by Liz Muller, Starbucks chief design officer and lead designer for all five Roasteries globally, the Roastery highlights the work of local craftsmen and women to create an enchanting destination for coffee exploration and discovery.

The Tokyo Roastery merges traditional and modern design to deliver a unique and inspired experience across all four floors. Upon entering the Roastery, customers are greeted by the world’s largest Starbucks Roastery coffee cask, four-stories and over 55 feet of blush-tinted copper adorned with hand-crafted copper cherry blossoms, which changes hues throughout the day in different lights.

The expansive cask was built using the technique of tsuchime, a tradition of copper beating, where each person involved in the building of the Roastery was offered the chance to hammer a portion to create its texture and pattern. The cask’s unique color is balanced against the light wood which has been carried into the interior to give the store a brightness found throughout traditional Japanese architecture.

Throughout the Roastery, local craftsmen and women were brought together to incorporate their expertise and traditional craft into the design elements.

The wood-tiled ceiling was inspired by the art of origami, providing a stunning visual experience. The light and airy space carries the light wood used on the exterior to the inside, giving the experience an enchanting aura.

The wood, sourced locally, has been treated throughout with a traditional technique which prevents it from aging, ensuring the brightness is maintained inside and outside in the years to come.

Enchanting Immersive Coffee, Tea and Mixology Experience

The coffee journey at the Reserve Roastery Tokyo is an immersive experience and education in coffee, and its process—from green bean to cup—which begins at the Main Bar on the first floor.

The open floor plan draws customers into the immersive experience, introducing them to the skilled art of roasting, brewing and hand-crafting beverages. The Reserve Roastery serves the freshest cup of coffee and it is here on the first floor that customers can taste Reserve coffee beverages such as Barrel-Aged Cold Brew.

The Princi bakery serves handcrafted, authentic artisanal Italian fare that is baked fresh in the Roastery throughout the day. For the first time in Japan, customers can enjoy freshly-baked breads, cornetti, focaccias, pizzas, salads and more.

An airy staircase leads to the second floor, where customers will be transported into the tradition of Japanese tea at the world’s largest Teavana Bar.

Exclusive tea beverages, such as the Pop’n Tea Sakura Jasmine, featuring a vibrant hibiscus and cherry popsicle atop a floral jasmine tea, will delight customers with their charming appearance, Japanese ingredients and unique flavor combinations, modernizing the tea experience. On the terraced third floor, Starbucks Japan’s first cocktail bar, Arriviamo™, puts innovation, mixology and cocktail craft on full display.

The two walls of spirits bring together the Arriviamo menu, featuring coffee and tea-inspired cocktails only available at the Tokyo Roastery, including the Nakameguro Espresso Martini made with chestnut liqueur, crème de cacao and espresso, then paired with decadent chocolate  from Nakameguro’s “green bean to bar CHOCOLATE” brand. Wine, beer and classic mixology beverages will also be available.

    Conversations with an Impact

Starbucks Japan has more than two decades contributing to the communities it serves.

The fourth floor of the Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo is home to AMU Inspiration Lounge–a dedicated space for the community to gather for hosted social impact conversations. The concept of “AMU,” which means “to knit together” in Japanese, is founded on human connection and passions coming together, something Starbucks has long believed in. For the first time at any Starbucks location in the world, this intimate space will serve as a platform to host change-makers and creative thinkers from across Japan. The first event in April will celebrate the role of women leaders in Japan.

The Roastery is planned to become Starbucks first certified Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) location offering training for coffee professionals in the near future.“We believe that where passions connect, the future is sparked, and we will offer the Tokyo Roastery as a gathering space to spark new ideas and create an impact,” said Minaguchi.

“The Roastery signifies our commitment to fostering moments of human connection over a cup of coffee and using these moments to create positive social impact in the communities we serve.”

With more than 37,000 partners who proudly wear the green apron across Japan’s 47 prefectures and 250 at the Roastery itself, Starbucks Japan will amplify coffee craft and innovation by freshly roasting small-batch coffees from around the world every day in Tokyo and introducing new beverages, concepts and inspiration to all 1,400 stores across Japan. This amplification will begin with Tokyo Roast coffee, a Starbucks Japan-exclusive coffee, available throughout the market on opening day.

  • Starbucks China unveils new third-place experience concept

Starbucks China unveils new third-place experience concept

Starbucks today unveiled its first Starbucks Reserve® Bakery Cafe, featuring fresh Italian Princi food, in China. This brand new third-place (in-store) experience is dedicated to the premium Starbucks Reserve® coffees served alongside artisanal and made-to-order food prepared by Princi bakers onsite every day.

Each baker has been meticulously trained in the acclaimed Italian baker Rocco Princi’s distinctive method of artisanal craft of baking to perfect the recipes for each food item. The cafe also features an expanded menu of Starbucks signature Mixology, including distinctive coffee and tea-inspired cocktails, Italian classics like Aperol Spritz, fine Italian wines and beers.

This will be the first-of-its-kind Italian Aperitivo experience (early evening social cocktails paired with small bites) in a Starbucks store location within China.

“For 20 years, Starbucks has revolutionized, and set new standards, around the third-place for our Chinese customers. Today marks yet another significant milestone as we take everything we have learned around coffee and our relentless pursuit for food innovation, to create a new exciting all-day cafe dining and Italian Aperitivo experience,” said Belinda Wong, ceo, Starbucks China. “Our ability to consistently elevate the customer and brand experience in a meaningful and respectful manner truly reflects Starbucks unmatched energy and operational capabilities to execute against our Purpose-driven Growth Agenda to play the long game in China.”

As a showcase of Starbucks undisputed coffee leadership in China, the cafe features Starbucks ReserveTM Princi™ Blend as the signature coffee offering for its handcrafted espresso beverages made using the Black-eagle Espresso Machine. This special Reserve blend can also be enjoyed freshly-brewed using the Siphon brewer, Pour-over or Starbucks Draft Nitro.

Authentic, freshly prepared food is the centerpiece that creates the vibrancy and intimacy within the cafe. Customers can share meals with family and friends at the large community table just feet away from the baking oven and the bountiful display of food creations.

Inspired by the passion and romance of Rocco Princi’s belief to infuse ‘Spirito di MilanoTM’ into this new retail environment, the coffee theatre transforms into a full mixology bar to offer Starbucks-distinctive coffee or tea-infused craft cocktails, beers, and a fine selection of Italian classics and wines specially curated by Rocco Princi, as the day turns into evening.

Each day from 5 pm to 7 pm, the store celebrates “Aperitivo Time” where customers can enjoy handcrafted cocktails, wine and beer with free-flow of pizza bites, green olives, and schiacciatine.

They can choose to enjoy this unique Italian evening social occasion by relaxing at the cafe’s outdoor patio with friends and loved ones, just like Italians would across the streets of Milan.

“I am excited to work with my Princi partners, and Starbucks, to unlock the infinite possibilities of Princi food elevating every daypart for our Chinese customers, from breakfast, lunch, to the new evening Aperitivo experience. This exceptional opportunity to pair Starbucks Reserve coffees with Princi’s 30-year heritage of serving only the freshest and artisanal food, in a brand new store format, is another dream come true for me,” said Rocco Princi.

With more than 3700 stores in 158 cities, no other coffee retailer in China has the depth of Starbucks coffee expertise, strength of the most sought-after world-class retail locations, and pipeline of meaningful innovations to elevate the customer experience.

Building on the overwhelming positive reception of freshly baked Italian PrinciTM food at the Shanghai Roastery, and the continued enthusiasm customers have towards Starbucks portfolio of innovative store concepts, the Starbucks Reserve® Bakery Cafe is yet another reflection of Starbucks holistic approach to build an exceptional third-place experience, further cementing its unparalleled leadership and success in China.

  • Starbucks Malaysia celebrates Reserve’s success

    Starbucks Malaysia celebrates Reserve’s success

Starbucks Malaysia plans to open two or three of its premium Reserve concept stores annually. The brand’s eighth Starbucks Reserve store opened at the end of last month, a 5000sqft flagship at Berjaya Times Square, three years after the first outlet launched at The Gardens Mall.

“We did not anticipate such a strong reception for the new concept store”, said Starbucks Malaysia & Brunei MD Sydney Quays. “We were surprised because a lot of people were interested to learn about coffee and the various ways of brewing.

“This is what inspired us to open more Starbucks Reserve stores. The opening of the Starbucks Reserve Berjaya Times Square amplifies our passion for coffee and our ongoing commitment to continue providing unprecedented coffee experiences and knowledge to the Malaysian community, while fostering a culture of human connection”, he said.

The new rollout schedule aims to cater to Starbucks’ loyal customers’ burgeoning interest in coffee. The brand is planning 30 Starbucks outlets per year including the Reserve venues, as well as regular stores, drive-thrus and small-format stores.

  • Starbucks to open three more Starbucks Reserve in Malaysia

Starbucks to open three more Starbucks Reserve in Malaysia

Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn Bhd, which opened its eight Starbucks Reserve concept store in Berjaya Times Squar, plans to open two to three more such stores this year. “The reception has been really good for Starbucks Reserve (stores). We hope to be able to have about two or three Reserve (outlets) every year,” Berjaya Food Bhd’s CEO and Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei managing director Sydney Quays said.

“The Reserve concept store is not something that you can open many because it is very exclusive. The coffees that we have in a Reserve are very exclusive and you don’t get that in other outlets. So it is very critical that we expand carefully and in locations that are very well appreciated,” he added.

Historically, Quays said the group has always aimed to open 30 stores a year, with investment around RM50 million to RM60 million.

According to Quays, the investment for a Reserve concept store is 30% higher compared to the non-Reserve concept stores.

The Starbucks Reserve Berjaya Times Square joins locations at The Garden Mall, Sunway Pyramid, SkyAvenue Genting Highlands, Publika, Desa Parkcity, Four Seasons Place Kuala Lumpur and Paradigm Mall Johor.

On its outlook, Quays believes the consumer sentiment has improved as a lot of uncertainty is over, and the rising tourists numbers also augurs well for its business.

Asked whether the sugar tax announced in Budget 2019 will impact its business, Quays said he is of the view that the new tax will not be a big issue for Starbucks Malaysia.

“Obviously sugar is an add on product for us, but we have not experienced any negativity in that and I don’t think it will affect us very much,” he said, adding that increase in price to its products is unlikely at this point of time.

Berjaya Starbucks has 282 outlets in the country comprising 42 drive-thru outlets.

  • Starbucks opens immersive coffee destination in New York

Starbucks opens immersive coffee destination in New York

“We designed the Roastery as the pinnacle experience around all-things-coffee, and there is nothing else like it in the world. With premium coffees, teas, mixology and the iconic Milanese Princi Bakery, it serves as a Starbucks brand amplifier and a platform for future innovation,” said Kevin Johnson, CEO, Starbucks. “Beverages such as Draft Nitro, Cold Foam and the recent launch of Juniper Latte all began at the Roastery and have since been introduced to Starbucks locations around the world. It is the ultimate Starbucks Experience and an unforgettable way to connect with our customers.”

Starbucks has a long history in New York. In 1994, Starbucks chairman emeritus, Howard Schultz, who was born and raised in Canarsie, Brooklyn, opened the first Starbucks store in the city on Broadway and 87th Street on the Upper West Side. Nearly 25 years later, there are 350 Starbucks stores across the five boroughs in the city where Starbucks employs approximately 5,000 partners (employees). The Roastery employs nearly 300 people, including roasters, baristas, commessas and mixologists.

“Like most people I first experienced Starbucks as a customer, where I would go to my store at 195 Broadway in the Financial District in New York City and order a tall latte which was the perfect way to start my day,” said Raul Adorno, Managing Director Reserve Roastery New York. “I look forward to welcoming my fellow New Yorkers and visitors from all around the world when we open the Roastery on Friday. You will be amazed.”

At its core, Starbucks Reserve Roastery New York is a working coffee roastery, where every day Starbucks Master Roasters, who have trained for years in the craft of coffee roasting, will be small-batch roasting Starbucks rarest single-origin coffees and blends called Starbucks Reserve. Those coffees then get served fresh at the Roastery or shipped to select Starbucks stores around the world. That functional purpose, as well as the history of industry and manufacturing in the meatpacking district, is reflected in the design of the space.

“New York is a hub to the world,” said Liz Muller, Chief Design Officer of Starbucks. “It’s an unbelievable place with such history. The meatpacking district has a fantastic history of industry, and the neighborhood has an electric energy; it is alive. We’ve designed a space where the excitement and dynamic activity of the neighborhood is mirrored in the Roastery. We want our customers to come in and feel very inspired.”

    Unique Food and Beverages

Coffee Bars – There are two coffee bars at the Roastery, which in total offer seven brewing methods, including pour over, Chemex, coffee press, siphon, espresso, Clover and cold brewing.

Upon entering the Roastery, visitors can visit the coffee bar on the main level, where baristas, called coffee masters, are crafting classic espresso beverages such as cappuccino, latte, cortado and specialty drinks such as whiskey barrel-aged cold brew, sparkling citrus espresso, nitro hopped apricot cold brew and rotating specials like the cardamom latte.

Arriviamo Bar – For the first time in the U.S., Starbucks will debut the Arriviamo Bar inspired by the Italian tradition of aperitivo. This craft cocktail bar is located inside the Roastery where expert mixologists will serve cocktails and spiritfrees curated by award-winning mixologist Julia Momose featuring coffee and tea. Specialty cocktails include the Nocino Notte, made with cold brew coffee, barrel-aged gin and black truffle salt, and the Triomphe, made with Teavana/MC Darjeeling de Triomphe Tea, gin, dry Riesling, aquavit, passionfruit sparkling water and orange saffron bitters. The Arriviamo Bar will also serve a selection of beer, wine and classic cocktails

Princi – Inside the Roastery is the Milanese boutique bakery Princi from founder Rocco Princi, with on-site baking of fresh breads, Pizzas, cornetti, focaccias, desserts and more.

Starbucks will build 100 new stores in Japan every year over the following three years, bringing its total stores to 1700 within the territory.

Starbucks president and CEO Kevin Johnson said: “We continue to thoughtfully evolve within Japan’s elevated coffee culture to maintain a leadership position and achieve profitable growth for the long-term.”

The firm recently launched a delivery program in Japan in partnership with Uber Eats, as well as a partnership with Japanese social media platform Line that is expected to result in a digital payment system.

  • Starbucks Korea to open the 30th upscale Reserve Bar

Starbucks Korea to open the 30th upscale Reserve Bar

Starbucks Korea says it will expand its premium Reserve store network to meet the growing demand for specialty coffee among local consumers.

The company will open two Reserve stores in Seoul and a third in Pangyo, just south of the capital, this week. They will raise to 30 the number of upscale Reserve cafes in the country, which is already the third-largest total of any international market, behind China with 52 and the US with 35.

Starbucks Korea is a joint venture between Starbucks Coffee International and South Korea’s Shinsegae Group.

The number of Reserve bars in South Korea stood at 15 as of the end of last year, so has nearly doubled in the past six months.

“We will continue to increase the number of Reserve bars in line with the growing demand for specialty coffee among local consumers,” a Starbucks Korea official said

Starbucks remains the undisputed No 1 in Korea’s coffee industry and was the first such chain the country to surpass 1 trillion won (US$895 million) in sales. It has more than 1150 stores nationwide.

The size of South Korea’s domestic coffee market reached 6.4 trillion won at the end of 2016, up 30.6 per cent from 2014, according to government data.

  • New global format showcased in Starbucks Reserve Seattle

New global format showcased in Starbucks Reserve Seattle

With the latest generation design and product offer, the new Starbucks Reserve Seattle store which opened this week offers a taste of what is to come for the 1000-plus stores planned globally bearing the sub-brand, including in Asia.

In just 14 months since the concept was unveiled at an investors conference, dozens of Reserve stores have opened including a massive Chinese flagship in Shanghai.

Starbucks partners work in the new Starbucks Reserve store at the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

The marketplace-styled Starbucks Reserve Seattle Sodo store is remarkable not just for the latest evolution of the upmarket sub-brand’s fit-out, but for the inclusion of the new Princi Italian restaurant concept with an open kitchen, seamlessly folded into the cafe format. Starbucks plans to open standalone Princi outlets in Seattle, Chicago and New York, so expect to see them integrated into the brand’s offer in key Asian markets as well.

Starbucks partners work in the new Starbucks Reserve store at the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

Designed in an open, marketplace style, Starbucks Reserve Sodo store customers can engage with and order from partners (employees) at the Princi counter or Reserve coffee bar, then gather with family and friends at community tables or lounge areas around two fireplaces. Open to view is the Princi kitchen where customers can see breads and pastries being made and fresh ingredients prepared daily.

Starbucks partners work in the new Starbucks Reserve store at the Starbucks Support Center in Seattle on Wednesday, February 21, 2018.

Located on the street level of the company’s headquarters, the store opened on Tuesday (February 27). It was created “to offer a mingling of public and private; a place where Starbucks partners and visitors can relax in a leather lounge chair near the fireplace, nosh on a piece of focaccia at the counter or enjoy the latest Reserve espresso and a flaky cornetti from Princi,” in the words of Starbucks in-house writer Heidi Peiper.

Christian Davies, VP creative global design & innovation for Starbucks, wants visitors to feel like they are part of an experience from the moment they cross the threshold and pass through the entry doors.

“Every detail is deliberate, starting with the pattern on the hand-carved doors – concentric circles borrowed from the art for a Starbucks Reserve coffee card.

“When you walk into the space from the entry, you can take everything in in the sweep of an eye,” says Davies. “We wanted people to walk through those doors and immediately find themselves in something different and unique, but they would still recognise as Starbucks.”

To the left, there’s a colorful art installation. Just beyond is the chef’s table and Princi case.

Behind that, through framed art glass, is the Princi kitchen. Anchoring the center of the main cafe is a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, signaling a welcoming place to gather. Then look to the right and you’ll see a long wood-topped craft bar with Starbucks Reserve coffees and a mixology bar, finishing with the coffee library and doors to the patio.

In addition to the open layout, Davies added other subtle touches, such as flecks of amber-colored glass and mirror sprinkled into the concrete floor that help suggest a path through the store.

“When people come into a space they can navigate, you can see their shoulders relax. They instantly feel more comfortable,” says Davies.

    Art meets leisure

The path begins at a stunning copper art installation that features nearly 3700 Starbucks Reserve cards, designed in-house. From a distance, the card wall’s shape evokes the topography of the gentle mountains where coffee is grown. Each card can pivot, creating shimmering waves of color like fish scales. But step closer, and individual coffee cards come into view, each one a work of art in itself. Every now says and again, a copper card is planted in the field of cards that tells a story about Starbucks Reserve.

“On one level, it’s simply a beautiful, gestural piece,” says Davies. “As you dive into the next level, and then the next, more comes out.”

Beyond the card wall is the first of three intimate meeting spaces, each creating its own moment of storytelling. The chef’s table room features the story of Rocco Princi, with shelves lined with ingredients from his pantry – cans of capers, artichokes and tomatoes and tall glass jars of preserved lemons. A favorite poem by Alda Merini, a friend of Princi, hangs in a place of honor.

Gathered around the long wooden chef’s table, visitors can look through a glass wall into the Princi kitchen with artisan bakers and chefs at work.

And taking center stage is the Princi bakery and cafe, featuring the full Princi menu with artisanal baked breads, and breakfast anchored by signature cornetti and brioche. At lunchtime, the menu offers soups, salads, focaccia and pizza. To the right is the mixology bar for later in the day with traditional Italian aperitivo, such as Aperol Spritz paired with small plates, as well as beer, wine and spirits.

    Celebrating ‘our never-ending curiosity’

The store represents the latest phase of innovation in the century-old building in Seattle’s Sodo neighborhood, which has served as Starbucks headquarters since 1993. In its previous life as a Sears Catalog distribution center, it employed what was then cutting-edge technology, with orders being picked by warehouse workers on roller skates and bicycles and delivered to the first floor via slides for quick shipping. The Reserve store continues that enterprising spirit, acting like a testing ground for the company, where it will debut new coffees, launch new products and host events. The store’s second meeting room, tucked back between the kitchen and the craft bar, is a tribute to this tradition. Starbucks R&D team will use this working lab to taste and test new beverages, starting with the cold coffee innovation.

“The lab celebrates our never-ending curiosity,” says Davies. “We can continue to push R&D around new beverages and ingredient combinations.”

The Reserve coffee bar is an eye-catching counterpoint to the Princi case. Here the craft of coffee is on display, with a full-lineup of brewing methods to explore, including siphon. Chemex, pour-over and Clover and a variety of Starbucks Reserve beverage creations to explore. The backdrop for this stunning display is a dark-stained walnut and leather back-bar, with hand-stitched copper wire adding sparkle and interest.

The story from bean to cup

In the third meeting space, visitors can learn coffee’s story from bean to cup. The Starbucks Reserve coffee library can be hidden away behind a pivoting full-height wall of 1200 bags of Starbucks Reserve Coffee. The space houses a collection of books on the geography, flora and fauna of Starbucks coffee-growing regions, and features a hand-painted Siren by Jordan Kay, the Starbucks artist behind this year’s holiday cup. An inside-outside fireplace brings warmth to those gathered in the room, and visitors enjoying the patio outside.

“When we were designing the space, we wanted to create layers of experiences and understanding – something new to discover,” adds Kenna Giuzio, senior store concept designer for Starbucks. “I hope with each visit, our customers will come away with a new story of Starbucks.”

The new cafe also features several new menu items, including Nitro Draft Latte, Spiced Ginger Cold Brew on tap, and new espresso drinks such as the Bianco Mocha.

  • Starbucks Roastery going international

    Starbucks Roastery going international

Starbucks Coffee Company is to launch its first international Starbucks Roastery and Reserve Tasting Room in China next year.

It will be along Shanghai’s Nanjing Rd West as part of the HKRI Taikoo Hui project, a premium retail, office and hotel precinct, and draws its inspiration from the first roastery that opened in the company’s hometown of Seattle, Washington, in December 2014. There will be a similar immersive, all-sensory experience, offering customers an understanding of the craft of roasting and brewing Starbucks coffees, including the limited-edition Starbucks Reserve coffees.

“As our first international roastery, we will take even bolder steps to make the Shanghai location our most stunning store, while relevant to the Chinese customer,” says Starbucks chairman/CEO Howard Schultz.

China is the company’s largest international market with more than 2100 stores across 102 cities, including 55 Starbucks Reserve stores. Only at the roastery will customers be able to watch freshly roasted beans arrive, connect with coffee specialists and master roasters and sample small-lot coffees brewed in different styles. There will also be a beverage and food menu.

The HKRI Taikoo Hui complex is a pioneering project combining sustainability and quality, being developed by HKR International and Swire Properties. The roastery retail experience will be in a standalone semi-circle building facing Nanjing Road, known as China’s top commercial street.

“The new Jing’an is focused on developing high-end commercial sectors,” says Shanghai Jing’an mayor Lu Xiaodong. “We aim to establish new developmental goals for a modern cosmopolitan city, and encourage new retail innovations within our district. The government fully supports this pioneering retail experience and initiative from Starbucks.”
