  • Sunways Malls Welcomes the Cashless Revolution

Sunways Malls Welcomes the Cashless Revolution

Ever since Bank Negara embarked on a 10-year roadmap to move towards a cashless society, the ever growing trend of cashless transactions has been increasing and is popular amongst the Gen-Y and Millennial Generation. Sunway Malls took the initiative to bring in leading e-wallet companies such as Boost, FavePay, GrabPay, Maybank QRPay, Touch ‘n Go Pay, and WeChat Pay for exclusive face-to-face sessions with retailers at a closed door conference held at Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre.

No longer do you need to carry around cash and credit cards as your mobile phone can do the paying! Numerous e-payment players in the market have emerged and is providing shoppers with better deals and convenience.

    Benefits of e-payment:

    • Enhances shopper experience
    • Increased sales
    • Quick and convenient

“As the payment market continues to evolve, it is imperative that we stay abreast with development of cashless payment to cater to new consumer demands”, said H.C Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks.

Retailers who attended the conference were treated to a detailed and in-depth look at how cashless transactions would benefit their business and increase their sales through intimate small group discussions with the five e-wallet companies. To date, close to 35% of retailers across Sunway Malls are using some sort of e-wallet payment at their outlets and the malls hopes to increase this number to cater to the ever growing trend of cashless payments.

Mr. Deep Chowdhury, Client Service Director (Consumer Insights) from Nielsen Malaysia spoke on the topic of ‘Cash or Cashless? • Retailers, mall operators embrace high technology

Retailers, mall operators embrace high technology

Malaysian retailers and mall operators are jumping on the technology bandwagon, adopting technologies such as shopper tracking systems and facial recognition cameras, using data analytics to capture important shopper information. Sunway Velocity Mall general manager centre management Danny Lee said the mall completed the installation of its shopper tracking system in early December that identifies a unique ID of each mobile phone carried by shoppers, and is testing the system now.

“It enables us to know how many times a person comes to the mall and where they go. At the same time it tells us the number of shoppers at the mall and is able to give us an accurate count of how many people visit the mall every week or month. This is phase one.

“This will then later link into us getting data of who they are so that we can use that as an intelligence system to know our customers and to push promotion to them. For example, we’d be able to detect automatically if it’s your birthday today when you visit the mall, and if there’s a special promotion in certain outlets during your birthday, you’d get certain discounts. We’ll be working on that in phase two,” Lee said recently.

“How the system works is that it will detect shoppers who carry smartphones. The shoppers’ travel history, traffic pattern will be recorded. Insights of shopper traffic flow in the mall, visit frequency (new traffic or returning traffic) and dwell time can be viewed on the online portal. There is also provision for integration with mobile application (to identify shopper profile to offer more personalised engagement), as well as additional reports based on user requirement.”

Adding that it has a formula to include children and discount double counting, Lee said Sunway Pyramid had rolled out the shopper tracking system first, followed by Sunway Velocity.

“It lets us know whether our campaign for a period of time is effective or not compared to other campaigns. In this mall (Sunway Velocity), we have 55-56 sensors throughout the mall. So it covers different zones and it can track where a person goes to, from one zone to another, and capture how many people are there. At what time, how many people are there in this atrium… we’re able to generate reports on that,” explained Lee.

He revealed that the set-up costs for this system range from RM120,000 to RM150,000, with recurring costs of RM10,000 every month per mall.

“Some malls have (this system) but not many have this in the Klang Valley, compared with malls in Singapore that have a lot more.”

Meanwhile, MRCA Academy, the training arm of the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA), is promoting awareness on technology adoption, especially in the areas of facial recognition and data analytics, to help MRCA members be more efficient in running their retail businesses.

MRCA Academy deputy chancellor Stan Singh-Jit, who is also National ICT Association of Malaysia councillor, said technology will be a catalyst that will help retailers grow their business and that it is a tool that retailers should take advantage of.

Stan is the founder and principal consultant of Ironhorse Asia Sdn Bhd, which provides solutions for in-store point-of-sale requirement, head office merchandising needs, warehousing, supply chain management, web-store, internet business, social media consultation, maximising return on investment via customer analytics, harnessing on merchandising analytics, among others.

He said while the recording of images is illegal due to the Personal Data Protection Act, there is another facial recognition technology that captures the identity of shoppers in a different way.

“It tails the person… it tells you whether the shopper is a male or a female and gives you the person’s age group. If I have data today that tells me the people that come to my store, their age and gender groups, I’m able to do more of what I’m selling. This is an important factor that is missing in the retail scene.

“Facial recognition can tell whether the person is a staff or supplier. If a customer walks past your store but doesn’t walk in, it can also tell you how many people didn’t come into your store. It’s a way to find out why people don’t come in. And if my store is here but you spend more time looking at the merchandise there, that tells me a story,” explained Stan.

He said this method differs from a footfall counter machine, which counts every walk-in, walk-out and hence the latter may not produce accurate numbers.

He disclosed that since this facial recognition technology is new, there are five proofs of concept for such technology in the Klang Valley at the moment, of which one is for a department store. He said that a camera may cost some RM130. A department store may have three to four floors and many cameras on each floor.

“All good things about buying begins at the store and there are many touchpoints in the store. As a customer walks into the store, how do you capture those points… how do you prioritise the value…. we’re helping MRCA members to understand the technology and how they can use it,” he said.

Sunway Pyramid will also run a Best Costume contest this coming Saturday, 8pm where the best dressed Pokémon Go costume can win surprise gifts from the mall. Retailers of the malls are spotted sporting their own rewards for Pokémon Go players.

Ever since the introduction of GST (Goods & Service Tax) April last year, Malaysians were subsequently hit by the removal of petrol subsidy, sugar, inflation and drop in currency value. The retail and mall industry has been hit with lower consumer confidence, lower consumer spend and certainly lower footfall for certain malls. Hence, various malls in Malaysia are stepping up their game in attracting shoppers’ footfall.

It is widely known that malls in general have high traffic during the festive period and school holidays, but the introduction of Pokémon Go has certainly spiked up the footfall for the non-peak season.

While it’s still too early to determine if sales have increased for Sunway Malls following the higher footfall, the malls under the brand are amongst the first in Malaysia to jump into the trend.

Sunway Pyramid’s Facebook fanpage was the first Malaysian mall facebook page to feature the various Pokémon shoppers and gamers can find in the mall and attracted high organic reach without advertisement spend. Sunway Carnival Mall followed suit with similar posts while Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Giza featured guides in their fanpage.

“As Pokémon Go is taking the world by storm, we hope Pokémon Go gamers take necessary safety precaution and be constantly aware of their surroundings. We wish no untoward accidents befall on them,” Kevin cautions.

“We can’t control where the Pokémon would appear and if they would appear near railings, escalators, steps or at open air car park such as the roof top, we hope they would remain aware of their surroundings,” he said.

    Malaysia malls target Vietnamese

Representatives of Malaysia malls have been in Vietnam trying to drum up business via tour operators.

But the Malaysians will face an uphill battle luring Vietnamese – Bangkok is only an hour away from Ho Chi Minh City and probably the best-serviced destination in the region, with at least seven airlines offering hour-long flights daily between the two cities.

Retail and tourism representatives from Malaysia met with tour organisers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to introduce a campaign aimed at enticing Vietnamese to visit Malaysia to shop.

Three specific annual sales campaigns were also being promoted by the group, including officials from the Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board (Tourism Malaysia) and Secretariat Shopping Malaysia(SSM).

At an associated travel mart, 14 representatives of 10 malls and retail groups met with travel agencies to seek possible co-operation, reports TuoitreNews. In the delegation were representatives of such groups as the Batu Road Retailers Association, Fahreinheit88, Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Sunway Putra Mall.

Tourism Malaysia deputy-director general Chong Yoke Har says the sales campaigns are the 1Malaysia Super Sale for all of March, the 1Malaysia Mega Sale Carnival, from June 15 to August 31, and the 1Malaysia Year-End Sale, on the last two months of the year.

Tourism Malaysia has also introduced Miss Shophia, the new shopping symbol for Malaysia and designed to help international tourists find shopping experiences.

Shopping accounts for most of Malaysia’s tourism revenue. As of the end of September last, tourist spending rose 2.9 per cent from a year earlier to RM15.3 billion (US$3.8 billion), or 30 per cent of the total tourism revenue of RM51 billion.

Last year, 229,626 Vietnamese tourists visited Malaysia, a 19 percent decline from 2014, when they spent about RM560.1 million. Chong is hopeful more Vietnamese will return to Malaysia for shopping as the two countries are relatively close and there are nonstop flights.

Meanwhile, Bangkok is closer, accommodation is cheaper and shopping malls targeting foreigners and tourists are clustered close together and well served by public transport.
