    AirAsia to resume flights from Surabaya to two major Malaysian cities

    Low-cost carrier AirAsia Indonesia will soon resume flights from Surabaya, East Java, to the Malaysian cities of Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru after they were temporarily stopped on April 1 amid the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the two countries, an AirAsia official has said.

    AirAsia Indonesia decided to reopen the flights from Surabaya to the Malaysian cities on May 18, following a decline in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the neighboring country, the airline’s president director Veranita Yosephine said on Monday.

    “Kuala Lumpur has shown a positive trend regarding the spread of COVID-19, and therefore we decided to reopen our flights to Malaysia. However, we’ll continue to review our decision and maintain our health standards,” she said during a virtual press conference.

    AirAsia Indonesia has suspended all scheduled flights since April 1 due to a lack of passengers as the government appealed to the public to stay at home and avoid travel. The government officially prohibited flights on April 24 to and from the country’s major cities as part of the emergency measures implemented to halt the spread of COVID-19.

    To generate income, Indonesian airlines including AirAsia Indonesia have shifted to cargo and chartered flight services that are still permitted by the Transportation Ministry.

    “Currently, we are only utilizing 10 of our 28 airplanes. We’re partnering with AirAsia Group’s cargo business company Teleport to run the cargo operation,” she said.

    Although the airline has been able to shift its operation from passenger to cargo services, AirAsia, as with other airlines, is still struggling to maintain its cash flow.

    Indonesian airlines are struggling to survive amid the COVID-19 pandemic, having booked combined revenue losses of Rp 207 billion (US$13.4 million) as of April 15, according to Finance Ministry data.

    In order to keep the company afloat, Veranita said the company had taken a number of cost-cutting measures such as employee salary cuts and airplane lease renegotiations and was also seeking new sources of capital.

    “We’re currently still looking at which sources of capital we could explore. To do so, we also need permission from the shareholders,” she said.

    Veranita said AirAsia would fully comply with the Transportation Ministry’s regulation and the government-regulated health protocols for international flights, such as mandatory use of masks and a health document requirement.

    “We will implement the health protocols set by the government and will require health documents for passengers,” she said.

    She added that the airline would continue monitoring developments in the COVID-19 pandemic in both countries, and could shut down the flight routes if there was a spike in new cases.

    The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Indonesia has risen steadily with the latest Health Ministry data recording 395 new confirmed cases on Monday, an increase of 349 new cases from the previous day.

    In neighboring Malaysia, the trend in new COVID-19 cases has shown signs of plateauing, with the country’s Health Ministry reporting 55 new confirmed cases and no deaths on Monday, down from 122 new cases and two deaths on Sunday.

    Indonesia’s FiberStar extends collaboration with Huawei

    Indonesia’s FiberStar has signed an agreement with Huawei to jointly expand high-speed fiber network services in the market.

    FiberStar recently partnered with Huawei to build a 1Tbps backbone DWDM network linking Jakarta with Surabaya. The network consists of submarine and terrestrial cables that form a ring network with a total length of more than 3000 kilometers.

    Building on this cooperation, the companies signed a memorandum of understanding at the Huawei ISP Summit Asia Pacific 2019 in Bali to strengthen collaboration in the field of fixed networks and data centers.

    FiberStar co-founder and director Thomas Dragono said Huawei shares the company’s vision for the digital transformation of Indonesia.

    “Being the pioneer of Indonesia’s neutral infrastructure service, and considering Huawei’s advancement in the optical communications field, we have both decided to explore a deeper and stronger partnership,” he said.

    “The consensus on the advantages of optical network technologies and evolution trends are the basis of cooperation between both parties. We will leverage the advanced DWDM and MPLS technology to expand the coverage of networks in Indonesia, and further facilitate the growth of the digital economy in Indonesia.”

    FiberStar was established in 2014 as a subsidiary of Indonesia’s biggest conglomerate the Salim Group.

    The company is Indonesia’s biggest carrier-neutral infrastructure provider, offering coverage to 92 Indonesian cities across the nation’s main islands including Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi.

    Lion Air opens new Surabaya-Haikou charter route

    The country’s largest private low-cost carrier, the Lion Air Group, has opened a new charter route from the East Java capital of Surabaya to Haikou, the capital of the Chinese island province of Hainan.

    Flying once a week, the fleet’s Boeing 737-900 ER aircraft will serve the new route, accommodating up to 215 passengers starting Friday.

    “We are very proud to be able to expand our international connectivity by opening a charter flight to China from Indonesia’s second biggest city, Surabaya. The new route will increase our service to customers and provide more options for those traveling from China to Indonesia,” said Lion Air Group CEO Edward Sirai in a statement?

    In collaboration with Hainan United Airlines Travel Group Co., the JT 2661 flight will depart on Fridays at 5:40 p.m. local time from Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport  and arrive at 11:45 p.m. at Haikou Meilan International Airport. The Indonesia-bound flight JT 2660 will fly Saturdays at 12:55 a.m. from Haikou and land in Surabaya at 5 a.m.

    Garuda Indonesia now flies from Surabaya to Medina

    Garuda Indonesia has opened a new route to connect Surabaya in East Java to Medina in Saudi Arabia in a bid to expand its flight network in the Middle East and tap into the potential umroh (minor haj) market.

    Introduced on Tuesday at Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, the all economy class flight will be available once a week on Tuesday using Airbus A330-300 that can accommodate 360 passengers.

    “Hopefully we can provide ease and comfort to East Javanese residents and others who are traveling on a pilgrimage since this direct flight will help save time and money,” said Garuda Indonesia Cargo Director Sigit Muhartono in a press release.

    The national flag carrier currently operates two direct international routes from Surabaya, to Singapore and Jeddah.

    Following the opening of the Surabaya-Medina route, Garuda Indonesia now operates a total of 34 flights to the Middle East from major cities in Indonesia.

    Garuda Indonesia opened the Surabaya-Madina flight route on Tuesday as part of its efforts to expand its flight network in the Middle East.

    The national flag carrier will serve the flight route on Tuesdays using an Airbus A330-300 with a seating capacity of 360, all of them economic class, Garuda Cargo Director Sigit Muhartono said in a written statement released on Tuesday.

    “As the flag carrier of the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Garuda Indonesia will always try to facilitate Muslims wishing to perform religious services in the Holy Land. With the new flight route inaugurated today, we hope the people of East Java and surrounding areas will find it easy and comfortable to travel to the Saudi main cities of Jeddah and Madinah by direct flight,” he added.

    The Surabaya-Madinah flight route will accommodate not only people who want to travel to the Holy Land for umroh (minor hajj) but also businessmen, tourists and migrant Indonesian workers.

    “With the Surabaya-Madina flight route, Garuda Indonesia offers umroh pilgrims an alternative flight route that enables them to opt to depart from Surabaya to Madina and return to Surabaya from Jeddah,” he explained.

    Jakarta-Surabaya rapid train to use existing track

    Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Acting Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Luhut Binsar Panjaitan has said the development of the Jakarta-Surabaya rapid train will use the existing track.

    “For the rapid train, we will use the existing network. We will strengthen the bearing pads and make the crossings run over or under, so there will not be any gates that can harm anyone,” stated the minister at the State Palace complex in Jakarta, Tuesday.

    He mentioned that there are a thousand crossing points on the Jakarta-Surabaya railway network.

    The minister hoped the project survey, due to be conducted in partnership with Japanese representatives, could be done in the first quarter of 2017.

    “The Jakarta-Surabaya rapid train, which runs up to 200 kilometers per hour, will have an immense impact on the nations economy,” he remarked.

    The projects investment value is considerably large, reaching US$2.5 to 3 million.

    Minister Panjaitan explained that the agenda of his meeting with President Joko Widodo today includes reporting the results of his trip to Japan, which was a follow-up to the presidents agreement with Japans Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

    “I met the prime minister along with his ministers and other officials,” he reiterated.

    He pointed out that the notions agreed upon by both country leaders included the Maritime Economic Cooperation, which was initiated last year.

    “We are now pursuing cooperation in a number of locations, including oil explorations in Natuna, economic development in Sabang, Patimbang harbor development in West Java, and farming advances in Merauke, Papua,” he remarked.

    He also mentioned cooperation in the education sector, where Japan will help with vocational training, while sending their professors to a number of technology corporations in Indonesia.

    “Partnerships in strategic industries are also included, which covers the rapid train project to be discussed with the minister of state-owned enterprises,” he continued.

    He added that from the string of agreements, those that will potentially be carried out during the first quarter of 2017 include the development of Patimbang Harbor.

    “Then, we will proceed with a joint survey for the Jakarta-Surabaya rapid train,” he concluded.

    About 10 percent of 450 apartments and Small Office Home Office (SOHO) developed by Operational Cooperation (KSO) PT Darmo Permai and PT Waskita Karya in the 88 Avenue Surabaya Project had been purchased by expatriates.

    KSO Wskita Darmo Permai managing director Kevin Sanjoto said that 65 percent of the 450 units had been sold. About 50 percent of the buyers were from Surabaya, 10 percent were expatriates, 15 percent from Jakarta and the rest of them were buyers from East Indonesia.

    “The expatriate buyers are from Japan, Singapore, and Korea. Some of them need places during their stay in Surabaya, including as preparations to face the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC),”Kevin said during the ground breaking ceremony of the project on Saturday, January 30, 2016.

    Waskita Karya Realty president director Didit Oemar Prihadi said that KSO Waskita Darmo Permai would hold road shows in big cities to boost the sales.

    “With such a strategy, we believe that we will gain new buyers, because many investors outside Java are interested in investing in Surabaya,” Kevin added.

    The apartment and SOHO project was a part of a superblock project developed on a 3.4-hectare land in West Surabaya. It was planned that the project would have eight towers consisting of SOHO, The Residence, The Suites, The Sky, The View, The Terrace, The Heritage and The Infinity. SOHO and The Residence would be the first towers to be completed.

    “By looking at the sales figure, and since the development project has been started, we expect to complete the project by 2018, and the handover can be conducted on August 8, 2018,” Didit said.

    Tony Roma’s Indonesia enters Surabaya

    Romacorp, US parent of Tony Roma’s, has opened its first restaurant in Surabaya, Indonesia.

    The restaurant opened on Kupang Indah St –  locally known as the “restaurant street” – a popular destination for locals and tourists in Indonesia’s second biggest city.

    With three Tony Roma’s Indonesia restaurants in Jakarta and one each in Tangerang and Bali,  Surabaya makes it six. The restaurants in Surabaya, Jakarta, and Tangerang are owned by Mas Millennium, and the restaurant in Bali is owned by PT WDI Indonesia.

    Evergreen Line launches China-Surabaya service

    In view of with the increasing market demand resulting from significant trade growth between China and the ASEAN countries, Evergreen Line is to partner with COSCO and China Shipping in launching a joint China-Surabaya Express (CSM) Service. This is Evergreen’s latest initiative to enhance its service on the Intra-Asian trade, the company said in its press release.

    The CSX service will employ four ships of 2,000-2,700 teu, including one each provided by Evergreen and CSCL and the remaining two by COSCO. The first sailing is planned to depart from Qingdao on the 20th of May, with the following the port rotation: Qingdao-Shanghai-Xiamen-Shekou-Pasir Gudang (Malysia)-Singapore-Surabaya (Indonesia)-Singapore-Qingdao.

    This weekly service covers major ports from China in the north to Malaysia and Indonesia in the south, providing regular and convenient links for regional trade and connecting to Evergreen’s global service network via Singapore.

    After the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area (ACFTA) was established in 2010, bilateral trade volumes have continued to rise. According to the statistics published by the Gerneral Administration of Customs in the PRC, its import and export trade with ASEAN grew by 8.3% to $480.4 billion in 2014.
