    Google now allows Microsoft Teams messages to be migrated to Google Chat

    Google announced this week that it’s expanding the ability to migrate messages to Microsoft Teams. Starting today, Google Workspace admins can migrate conversations from channels in Microsoft Teams to spaces in Google Chat.

    In order to migrate data from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat, admins must use the dedicated console. Here are the steps an admin must follow to migrate their organization’s data from Microsoft Teams to Google Chat:

    • First, connect to your Microsoft account.
    • Then, upload a CSV of the teams from where you want to migrate the messages. You can specify the source to destination identity mapping by uploading a CSV of the email ID’s from source to target.
    • Next, you’ll enter the starting date for messages to be migrated from Teams. Then you can begin your data migration.
    • Finally, you’ll complete the migration by making migrated spaces, messages and related conversation data available to Google Workspace users.

    It’s imporant to mention that admins can only migrate data to accounts of existing users with a user license and the Google Chat service turned on.

    Equally important is the fact that the Chat migration tool will not delete or modify existing Google Chat spaces or messages. On top of that, admis can also run a delta migration, which will migrate any messages added to Teams channels since the primary migration (messages already migrated will be skipped).

    As soon as the migration process is complete, admins can export a report that contains detailed information regarding content that skipped, failed or had warnings during the migration.

    Microsoft Teams announces new chat and channels experience for all platforms

    In a rare moment of sincerity, Microsoft admitted that Teams offers a sub-par experience in comparison with the competition, and decided to remove some key features, which were obsolete and no longer helped users in any way.

    Decluttering the app of unnecessary features is an important step toward making Teams a contender in the communication app space.

    The next step would be to continue to iterate on already existing features and make them as easy to use as possible. In a recent blog post, Microsoft announced a new chat experience is coming to all platforms Teams is now available on, including desktop, mobile, iOS, and Android.

    The new chat experience features mobile-specific settings, such as the option to choose between viewing messages organized by sections or by most recent. Since the new experience has been specifically designed for different screen sizes, it will make it easier for mobile users to read and respond to messages while on the go.More importantly, Microsoft has decided to bring chats, teams, and channels into one place under Chat. This will allow users to navigate and prioritize all their conversations without having to switch contexts.

    Those who preferred the previous layout can keep chat and channels separate during the onboarding process that pops up when Teams is launched for the first time after the update. This can also be done at any time later.

    Another useful feature added to Teams is the addition of new filters like “Unread,” “Chat,” “Channels,” “Meetings,” and “Muted.” Now, whenever you’re looking for a specific type of conversation, like channels, you’ll be able to select the relevant filter to further narrow your search and locate the most relevant results.

    Also, the new chat and channels experience includes a new favorites section, which is available for everyone by default. You’ll find all your pinned chats and channels from previous experience in this section.

    Besides that, Teams takes advantage of new custom sections where users can group together all their relevant conversations on a certain topic, be it in chats, channels, meetings, Teams bots or AI agents. You can have up to 50 sections and 50 items per section in Teams.

    According to Microsoft, the new chat and channels experience is coming to public preview in November to desktop, mobile, iOS, and Android, so keep an eye out for a consistent update next month.

    Microsoft makes Skype ad-free on all platforms, rolls out new features

    Microsoft is now rolling out a major Skype update that brings a bunch of new features and improvements. Hidden in the fairly long list of changes is a line that feels like it deserves its own paragraph: Skype is now ad-free.

    The Redmond-based company announced that the latest update removes all ads from Skype Channels and the entire Skype platform. Users can now finally focus on their chats without any ad distraction, as the app has now become cleaner and more user-friendly.

    Besides decluttering Skype, Microsoft also introduced a wide range of new features and design tweaks. Here are some of the most important changes included in this update:

    • Streamlined Access: Easily access the AI image creator from the chat window or the top bar.
    • Enhanced UI: Enjoy a more intuitive and visually appealing interface for creating AI images.
    • Improved Image Expansion: Images now expand on click, making it easier to view your creations.
    • Better Navigation: Navigate seamlessly with the new back button for the ideas page.
    • Optimized Menu Options: The image creator option is now more conveniently placed after the forward option in the message context menu.
    • Consistent Margins: Fixed margin inconsistencies in the image creator on macOS for a consistent design.

    In addition to the changes above, Microsoft confirmed that Skype for iOS is finally getting OneAuth introduction, a feature that was available on Android for quite some time. The OneAuth integration simplifies the sign-in process across all Microsoft apps.

    Obviously, OneAuth replaces the old sign-in system, as the former lets users sign in to Skype automatically if they’ve already signed into other Microsoft apps like Teams. Basically, if you’re signed into any Microsoft app, you’ll now be signed into Skype too.

    Finally, Microsoft fixed a couple issues on mobile platforms, including one that prevented some users from sending media when connected to a 5G network. Also, the bug where users could hear the ringtone but were unable to pick up the call on iOS has been addressed too.

    Gen Z grapples with shrinking job market

    Many Gen Z people are struggling to find jobs as businesses scale down operations amid the economic downturn.

    Ho Chi Minh City has over 300,000 businesses, but none of them were willing to hire Thanh Nga, 25, last year.

    “I have experience in customer service but was not able to find a job after submitting CVs to over 50 businesses in HCMC, Da Lat and Binh Duong,” she says.

    She looked for a job on online platforms and social media groups.

    “In 2018 usually somebody would call me soon after I submitted my CV, but last year I received no call most of the time.”

    Nga is among an increasing number of Gen Z people, or those born between 1997 and 2012, who are struggling to find jobs in the post-Covid economy.

    Youths accounted for 41.3% of unemployed people last year, up from 37.6% from 2022. This meant 437,300 people aged between 15 and 24 had no jobs, according to the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs.

    Nguyen Hoang Ha, an officer in the International Labour Organization, says people who graduated since Covid-19 are among the “quarantined generation” who had to go through disruptions in the labor market and in education and training.

    Another HCMC local, Thu Thuy, 24, had struggled to find a job in 2022 when the economy reopened after two years of the pandemic.

    She submitted 30 CVs and went to more than a dozen interviews but failed to find a job since most companies asked for months of experience, which she could not get due to Covid travel restrictions.

    She says: “Employers often want at least six months of experience but I did not have that. I used to think that having a college degree would guarantee a job but turns out that is not the case.”

    Economist Nguyen Minh Phong said the unemployment among youths is a global trend as companies often lay off the most inexperienced staff when the situation becomes difficult.

    Many urban Vietnamese youths have high expectations about salaries and will rather wait for a good opportunity than work for low pay, he adds.

    Thuy says some companies offered her a job for VND6 million ($244), but she declined, saying she needed at least VND7 million to pay the bills in expensive HCMC.

    Embarrassed, she lied to her family in the countryside that she was still working.

    But the economy alone is not to blame.

    Ha of ILO advises people in the 15-24 age group to educate themselves in technology and soft skills such as group collaboration and problem solving to meet the increasing demands on the labor market.

    Google Meet update adds 1080p video resolution for groups calls

    After bringing the ability to install third-party add-ons directly within the app last month, Google Meet is now getting another useful feature that’s not really related to productivity: 1080p support for group calls.

    Previously only available for 1:1 Google Meet calls, full HD support is now being expanded to meetings with three or more participants. Those with 1080p cameras must select the higher resolution option before entering a meeting because it’s off by default.

    According to Google, 1080p is only sent when one or more users are pinning the 1080p-enabled user on a screen large enough to render the high-resolution video feed.

    For this to work smoothly, additional bandwidth will be needed to be able to send 1080p video. As expected, if the requirements aren’t met, the app will automatically adjust the resolution. Support for 1080p streaming in groups calls is now available on both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains.

    Google confirmed that the new feature is available for free to Google Workspace Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Plus, Enterprise Essentials, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Starter, Education Plus, and the Teaching and Learning Upgrade.

    The new feature is also available to Workspace Individual subscribers, but not to users with personal Google Accounts, at least for the moment.

    Microsoft has been working hard on improving its chat and collaboration app Teams since last year when many people were forced to work from home. Alongside many improvements and new features, there’s one improvement set to make users’ lives way easier. Microsoft Teams will be updating its search.

    A new entry to the Microsoft 365 Roadmap has now been published regarding the Microsoft Teams search functionality. According to the entry, the search experience on Teams will be improved by ‘Top Hits’ results that would be automatically generated.

    Microsoft stated that the new section will autosuggest the most relevant results across people, chats, files, and other content stored or shared in the app.

    The new feature is still under development, but it is expected to roll out to users by the end of this month.

    Microsoft has been investing a lot of effort into bringing new features to the Teams platform since the start of the pandemic. It has brought together video conferencing, file sharing, project management, and other features to Teams, further expanding its range of functionality.

    This expansion necessitates a better search functionality, though. Currently, the autosuggest in search provides a few possible results by type, and users can apply filters to them for a more specific search. However, the Top Hits section is expected to bring another layer of intelligence to the existing search options. This will make it easier to find exactly what you’re searching for on the first try, therefore reducing your search time and boosting your productivity.

    A new roadmap update by Microsoft shows us a Microsoft Teams feature you will be able to use starting September and it is: walkie-talkie with your phone, over a wireless or cellular connection. The new feature will make communicating with your co-workers quicker.

    Figuratively speaking, with the new feature, your phone or a tablet will be able to be used as a walkie-talkie (of course, via the MS Teams app). The new feature will be available in September worldwide. The walkie-talkie option seems quite convenient for first-line workers, and it will help reduce the number of devices they need to carry while at the same time providing the necessary security.

    Emma Williams, CVP of modern workplace verticals at Microsoft, stated that the new natively built into Teams functionality will help lower costs for IT from companies and organizations. She also added that the feature is more secured when compared to analog devices with unsecured networks, and you will not need to worry about eavesdropping or crosstalk.

    The feature will work over Wi-Fi or cellular data and can be used across different geographic locations.

    Earlier, Samsung has showcased how you can use the new MS Teams feature with the rugged Galaxy XCover Pro; without even unlocking the phone, given the fact that you can access it via the programmable button on the phone.

    To further augment Team’s walkie-talkie feature, you can use it with a wireless headset. For example, the Jabra BlueParrot and Klein Valor Speaker are validated to work with the new functionality.

    The feature will roll out in September, and in order to use it, you will first need to open the app on your smartphone and look for the Walkie Talkie icon in the navigation bar. It’s either going to be there or in the ‘More’ options.
