    China Telecom reports record double-digit growth in 2021

    China Telecom’s “Cloudification and digital transformation” strategy has paid off. In 2021, China Telecom’s net profit reached RMB25,948 million, representing an increase of 24.5% year-on-year. Operating revenues amounted to RMB439.6 billion, growing by 11.7% over the preceding year.

    In 2021, the company implemented its “Cloudification and digital transformation” strategy, developed integrated intelligent information services with a customer-oriented approach, and built core sci-tech innovation capabilities and the new information infrastructure. The company also established industrial and capital ecologies featuring strong alliances and open cooperation, while carrying out system and mechanism reforms, achieving new results in high-quality development.

    China Telecom continued to enhance its 5G coverage and network quality, innovated e-surfing cloud handset device ecology, enriched the 5G application and privilege portfolio, and launched 5G cloud packages. The company optimized the service experience for users through ultimate convergence, facilitated the upgrade of individuals’ demands for emerging information consumption, continued to unleash the new round of data traffic benefits, and propelled the scale and value enhancement of its mobile subscribers.

    In 2021, mobile communication service revenues reached RMB184.2 billion, representing an increase of 4.9% from the previous year. The total number of subscribers reached 372 million, with subscribers’ net addition maintaining the industry-leading position for four consecutive years. Meanwhile, the penetration rate of 5G package subscribers reached 50.4%, maintaining the industry-leading position.

    Combining cloud, security, 5G, data, and intelligence, China Telecom developed scene-based integrated intelligent solutions and proactively empowered the transformation and upgrades of traditional industries. In 2021, revenue from industrial digitalization reached RMB98.9 billion, representing year-on-year growth of 19.4%.

    On 20 August 2021, the company successfully listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, leveraging wider financing channels to expand ecological cooperation and implement more flexible incentive measures.

    Chairman Ke noted that China Telecom has had a promising start under the “14th Five-Year Plan” in 2021. In 2022, the company will seize opportunities arising from the development of the digital economy, putting all efforts into promoting high-quality development and jointly creating a new pattern for the information and communications industry.

    Ericsson, Telstra, and Qualcomm Technologies achieve highest uplink peak rate

    Ericsson, Telstra, and Qualcomm Technologies have achieved the highest uplink peak rate ever recorded on a commercial network during a live demo in Queensland, Australia. Together, they reached an uplink data speed of close to 1Gbps, paving the way for more seamless experiences in use cases such as live video streaming and social media content sharing.

    Using Ericsson’s New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) and carrier aggregation software features together with a smartphone form-factor test device powered by Snapdragon® X65 5G Modem-RF System on Telstra’s network, this new uplink speed record marks another significant milestone for the ecosystem collaboration between the three companies.

    The high uplink peak rate was reached by combining the data rates from both mid-band and high band (millimeter wave) to fully utilize Telstra’s spectrum for improved user experience. The demo used Ericsson’s NR-DC software feature with uplink four-component carrier aggregation (UL 4CC CA), in which four contiguous carriers of 100MHz are combined, resulting in higher data speeds.

    Delivering uplink peak rates of close to 1Gbps will enable Telstra to more than double the current uplink throughput in its 5G network. This is particularly important for supporting applications and services that involve uploading vast amounts of data.

    Sibel Tombaz, head of product line 5G RAN, Ericsson, says: “We continue to pursue new and innovative ways of enhancing the end-user impact of 5G. An uplink speed of close to 1Gbps using NR-DC and four-component carrier aggregation is the latest in a series of 5G milestones we have achieved in collaboration with Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies. This means users can enjoy vastly improved experiences from applications where quicker upload time makes a difference.”

    Ericsson, Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies achieved the first on a commercial network in Queensland, Australia with a theoretical maximum uplink speed of 986 Mbps, integrating four-component 100MHz carriers of millimeter-wave, combining with the 100MHz of 3.6GHz spectrum. NR-DC was implemented with n78 and n258.

    The testing was conducted at Telstra’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) using Telstra’s commercial network resulting in a throughput of roughly 1Gbps, more than doubling the current uplink speed on the market. The smartphone form-factor test device powered by Snapdragon X65 was used with Ericsson Radio System’s Baseband 6648 and AIR 6488 for mid-band, which has been widely deployed in Telstra’s network, and Baseband 6648 with the AIR 5322 for high-band.

    Ericsson’s NR-DC software combines 5G frequency ranges below 7.125 GHz (mid-band, Time Division Duplex, TDD) and above 24.25 GHz (high-band TDD) and is now available for commercial deployment. The UL 4CC carrier aggregation software is slated to go commercial globally in the second quarter of 2022.

    The alliance between the two Japanese companies is estimated to be worth $30 billion and is expected to be concluded by October next year. The merger’s combined revenue could see it totalling $11 billion, easily surpassing its domestic competitor Rakuten.

    Tech analysts have lauded the merger, stating that this agreement would give Z Holdings and Line the opportunity to extend their reach towards a larger consumer base and increased negotiating power with its advertisers. Softbank and Naver, which owns Line, will each control 50% of the share in Z holdings.

    “We were driven by a sense of crisis about global competition and the pace of change in AI,” said Takeshi Idezawa, co-Chief Executive at Line. “The timing arrived for us to move on to the next phase [with this merger].”
