    AT&T launches 5G service in New York City

    After Sprint and Verizon, it’s AT&T’s turn to bring 5G to another US city. The carrier has just announced that starting today, customers in New York City will be able to use its 5G service if they own a compatible device.

    However, AT&T’s 5G network won’t cover the entire city and it will be available in limited areas initially. Sadly, unlike other US carriers, AT&T wouldn’t list areas in New York City where customers will be able to access its so-called 5G+ network.

    For the time being, select customers in NYC can access AT&T’s 5G+ network using the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G on the carrier’s AT&T Business Unlimited Preferred plan. As such, the AT&T 5G service is only for business customers, at list initially.

    NYC is the 21st city in the US with AT&T 5G, but the carrier announced plans to offer nationwide 5G in the first half of 2020, so there’s more to come.

    Consumers willing to pay a premium for 5G

    Despite concerns surrounding the commercial proposition of 5G technology, smartphone users are willing to pay an average of a 20% premium for 5G services, according to Ericsson.

    The company’s latest ConsumerLab report on the 5G consumer potential finds that half of the early adopters would be willing to pay as much as 32% more for 5G.

    But consumers’ willingness to pay a premium for 5G is reliant on operators introducing new use cases and payment models and providing a consistently high uplink and downlink speed, the report finds.

    Meanwhile, 5G is expected to drive usage behaviors that also promise to increase revenues. The study finds that 5G is expected to significantly increase video consumption, both by enabling streaming in higher resolutions and through the increased use of augmented reality, virtual reality, and other new formats.

    Ericsson predicts that one in five smartphone users’ data usage could reach more than 200GB per month over 5G devices by 2025.

    Consumers also expect that 5G will bring additional benefits such as reducing network congestion in dense urban areas and introducing more home broadband choices.

    Based on the research, Ericsson ConsumerLab has drawn up a consumer roadmap of 5G use cases involving 31 different applications and services.

    These applications are divided into six categories – entertainment and media; enhanced mobile broadband; gaming and AR/VR applications; smart home and fixed wireless access; automotive and transportation; and shopping and immersive communications.

    “Trough our research, we have busted four myths about consumers’ views on 5G and answered questions such as whether 5G features will require new types of devices, or whether smartphones will be the silver bullet for 5G,” Ericsson Research head of ConsumerLab Jasmeet Singh Sethi said.

    “Consumers clearly state that they think smartphones are unlikely to be the sole solution for 5G.”

    NTC extends migration date to eight-digit landline numbers

    The Philippines’ National Telecommunications Commission has extended the migration to eight digit landline numbers in the Greater Metro Manila area by six months, at the request of the banking industry.

    The Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP) and the Credit Card Association of the Philippines (CCAP) have requested more time to prepare for the introduction of eight digit landline numbers by implementing the necessary changes to their operations and systems.

    As a result, the NTC has ordered local operators to extend the migration date to October 6 from March 18.

    Both Globe Telecom and PLDT have announced they will comply with the demand and informed customers of the delay.

    Globe Telecom has stated that until January 5, customers still incorrectly dialing an old 7-digit number will hear a special announcement stating that the format has been changed to 8 digits.

    The company has also pledged to continue remaining customers of the upcoming migration over all available channels – including SMS, email and social media – up to the deadline.

    “We will make the necessary adjustments when it comes to our internal systems and communication efforts to ensure smooth service continuity for all of our affected customers,” Globe general counsel Froilan Castelo said.

    “Our teams are continuously working closely with the NTC and other telcos to assist affected customers before, during, and after the migration.”

    25 cellcos test 5G in Q1, says GSA

    The GSA (Global mobile Suppliers Association) has said that in the first quarter alone at least 25 operators from 15 countries have demonstrated 5G technologies, or announced 5G tests, or trials.

    And 18 operators are currently committed to the implementation of services based on pre-standards 5G technology by or before 2019, says the GSA quarterly “Evolution from LTE to 5G” report.

    Although the GSA does not name all the specific pre-5G operators within the report, it does mention Etisalat, Telia Sonera, TIM and Verizon as four examples.

    A further 26 operators are trialling, deploying or planning LTE-Advanced Pro networks exhibiting multiple Rel-13 features such as those related to carrier aggregation, modulation scheme, MIMO, latency and MCPTT (mission-critical push-to-talk).

    An important milestone was reached in March 2017 when the 3GPP agreed on an intermediate target for early completion of Non-Standalone (NSA) 5G NR mode for enhanced mobile broadband. NSA mode anchors connections in 3G, using 5G NR carriers to augment data rates and reduce latency where needed. It was agreed to work towards finalization of the NSA standard by March 2018.

    At the same time, the group said it was still committed to completing the standard for Standalone (SA) 5G NR mode by September 2018. In February 2017, a large group of operators and vendors had lent their public support to this new approach, expressing the view that it will enable standards-based field trials to begin in 2019.

    Indian telcos to start their 5G journeys this year

    India’s plan of utilizing 5G technology to keep up with the rest of the world may soon become a reality.

    Indian operators will start the process of upgrading to 5G technology from this year. According to Huawei India CEO Jay Chen, 5G technology in present form can deliver up to 1Gbps download speed.

    “I can tell you Massive MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology (part of 5G technology) will go to India this year. We have had discussions with leading telecoms operators who are interested and right now it is only available with Huawei for commercial deployment,” Chen said in an interview. Wide-scale commercial deployment of 5G is expected to start in India in the next three years.

    Bharti Airtel Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal had earlier said that the MIMO technology available with Huawei and ZTE can increase current capability of spectrum by up to 8 times at an additional cost of only about 20%.

    Chen said that 5G standards are expected to be firmed up next year when wide scale commercial deployment of 5G will begin.

    “We have already deployed 4.5G networks in 13 circles across India which with minor upgrades can be transformed to 5G. With 4G subscriber base in India increasing, the download speed will reduce for which operators will need to begin start 4.5G services,” said Chen.

    5G will bring advanced technology which will change the way network coverage is provided to subscribers.

    “At present, subscribers runs to connect with the network. We are ready with pilots for multi MIMO technology that will follow subscribers. Dedicated spectrum frequency (beam forming) will connect with device of the subscribers and follow them wherever they go,” explained Chen.

    He added that the Indian industry is improving significantly with consolidation in the sector and end of spectrum shortage which provides good opportunity for telecoms equipment companies.

    “Earlier their was spectrum scarcity in India. There were 13 operators who were involved in tariff war. Since last year we have not seen operators complaining about spectrum scarcity. Availability of spectrum gives them opportunity to deploy latest technologies like 5G. With Huawei we see this a very positive move. Our growth has also improved in India in last two years,” Chen said.

    He said that Indian operators are now moving in the direction where they can catch up with rest of the world.

    Machine learning in 2017 will become a mainstream tool for communications providers struggling to transform data overload into actionable analytics, according to Argyle Data.

    “The telecommunications industry is drowning in data,” said Padraig Stapleton, VP of engineering at Argyle Data. “Functions like support, billing, customer care and marketing, throwing off large amounts of data as a by-product of their activities, the exhaust fumes of data.”

    Stapleton said fraud and financial analysts alike are overwhelmed by the struggle to control and harness this fire-hose of information into actionable analytics. There is just too much IP traffic going across mobile networks for humans to review, detect and respond to fraud in the traditional ways such as discovering fraud and writing preventative rules.

    Machine learning does all the grunt work for analysts, sifting through data in real time and providing output instantly in understandable, accessible formats,” said Stapleton.

    Based on customer feedback, Argyle Data said the following rank among the top communications service provider (CSP) concerns for 2017 — subscription fraud and dealer fraud; fraud using mobile data services and IP applications; call bypass; mobile voice is going extinct; identifying, analyzing and monetizing IP-based traffic; and the explosion of IoT devices across communications networks.

    “These issues can only be addressed if CSPs have better insight into voice and data traffic passing through their networks,” added Stapleton. “New machine learning algorithms give them the ability to respond rapidly to new trends, anomalies or threats.”

    CUG signs IPX peering deal with 3 APAC telcos

    China Unicom Global (CUG) has signed an IPX direct interconnection bilateral agreement with regional peers PCCW Global, Hutchison Global Communications (HGC) and Chunghwa Telecom.

    The direct IPX peering agreement will allow CUG to expand its mobile roaming coverage areas.

    In a statement, CUG said the agreement will also help provide mobile customers within the region reached by its new partners with high quality mobile voice and data roaming services as well as advanced IP services including VoLTE and HD video calling.

    CUG executive vice president Yuerui Ma said CUG IPX will become a critical platform for the operator’s international roaming data exchange.

    He said CUG aims to jointly promote direct-connection among mobile networks in Asia-Pacific by using IPX direct-connection. This would allow operators in the region to provide faster, stabler and more secure international roaming services for mobile customers.

    CUG, China Unicom’s wholly-owned international subsidiary, has a presence in 28 branches worldwide. Its main businesses include leased line, internet, system integration, cloud computing, data center, video conferencing and MVNE services.

    Wi-Fi roaming, interworking and service policy enablement provider Accuris Networks has entered a partnership with global Wi-Fi operator iPass to offer mobile operators and MVNOs the ability to integrate carrier Wi-Fi into their service offerings.

    The companies will offer a combined solution enabling mobile operators to access the global iPass Wi-Fi footprint for service delivery and traffic offloading.

    The solution will integrate iPass’ SmartConnect technology into the Accuris Networks Wi-Fi e-client to enable client connection analytics. The solution will support integration with pre-paid service plans and existing billing systems.

    “Not only will this partnership offer our connectivity services to a billion potential end users, but it will also enable MNOs and MVNOs to dramatically accelerate the introduction of cutting-edge Wi-Fi solutions to the market,” iPass CEO Gary Griffiths said.

    OSS/BSS vendor Oculeus has introduced real-time traffic fraud blocking capabilities to its Oculeus Anti-Fraud offering.

    The new capabilities are designed to eliminate or significantly reduce revenue losses caused by fraudulent traffic by conducting the fraud evaluation and blocking in real-time before the start of a call.

    The new functionality, introduced in the new version 5.0 of Oculeus Anti-Fraud, uses a SIP redirect server and pre-call fraud detection engine to monitor and evaluate pre-call attempts.

    “Combating fraud and finding a solution to stop the severe revenue losses that fraud is causing are high on the agendas of executives and account managers of most providers of voice-based communications services in all regions around the world,” Oculeus CEO Amd Baranowski said.

    “The new Live Traffic Fraud Blocking capabilities will uniquely help services providers prevent more fraud than ever, even before revenue losses occur.”

    Baranowski said demand for Oculeus’ anti-fraud solution is high in Asia, and that as well as traditional operators, the company is experiencing demand from OTT players.

    “As many OTT players expand their services and functionality, their exposure to fraud also grows,” he said.

    “For instance, when the incoming and outgoing calls from an OTT service interact with the telephony network, the OTT is exposed to fraudulent activity, especially to expensive call durations and destinations.

    Vietnam grants 4G licenses to three cellcos

    Vietnam has granted 4G licenses to three of the market’s major mobile operators – MobiFone, military-run Viettel and state-owned VNPT.

    The operators have been granted permission to roll out LTE services over the 1800-MHz band.

    Each of the three operators have been piloting LTE and LTE-Advanced services in multiple cities, with Viettel launching a trial in late 2015, VNPT testing services since January this year and MobiFone commencing a pilot in July.

    The licenses will be allocated as part of Vietnam’s government-approved telecommunications development plan, which includes a target of covering 95% of the population with 3G and 4G services by 2020 as part of efforts to ensure nationwide coverage of broadband infrastructure.

    According to the report, major operators have indicated they will be ready to launch LTE soon after receiving the licenses. They will be valid until 2024.

    Thai cellcos must register SIMs or lose licenses

    Thailand’s telecoms regulator NBTC has warned operators that they will have their operating licenses immediately revoked if they fail to register prepaid SIMs sold from now on.

    The regulator has also warned that operators may be fined if phones with an unregistered SIM are sued for illegal activity.

    According to the NBTC, the regulator still gets new entries to its online customer information registration system that state “not registered,” despite introducing mandatory SIM registration more than a year ago.

    NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith has stated that there will be “no more warning messages from now on,” and that operators allowing prepaid customers to use services without registering their details will have their licenses revoked immediately.

    The warning comes in the wake of a spate of recent bombing attacks in the south of the nation, and follows a meeting between the NBTC and more than 20 mobile operators and MVNOs to discuss the issue.

    According to a source quoted for the report, there were 36 mobile numbers involved in the recent bombing, and three of these had not been registered.

    Regulators are also proposing introducing special tracking SIMs for foreigners as part of Thailand’s SIM registration policy.

    Cybercriminals use insiders to attack telcos

    Cybercriminals are using insiders to gain access to telecommunications networks and subscriber data, recruiting disaffected employees through underground channels or blackmailing staff using compromising information gathered from open sources.

    This is among the findings of a Kaspersky Lab intelligence report into security threats facing the telecommunications industry.

    Telecommunications providers are a top target for cyber-attacks. They operate and manage the world’s networks, voice and data transmissions and store vast amounts of sensitive data. This makes them highly attractive to cybercriminals in search of financial gain, as well as nation-state sponsored actors launching targeted attacks, and even competitors.

    To achieve their goals, cybercriminals often use insiders as part of their malicious ‘toolset’ to help them breach the perimeter of a telecommunications company and perpetrate their crimes.

    New research by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International reveals that 28% of all cyber-attacks and 38% of targeted attacks now involve malicious activity by insiders. The intelligence report examines popular ways of involving insiders in telecoms-related criminal schemes and gives examples of the things insiders are used for.

    Compromising employees

    According to the Kaspersky Lab researchers, attackers engage or entrap telecoms employees in the following ways:

    • Using publicly available or previously stolen data sources to find compromising information on employees of the company who they intend to hack. They then blackmail targeted individuals – forcing them to hand over their corporate credentials, provide information on internal systems or distribute spear-phishing attacks on their behalf.
    • Recruiting willing insiders through underground message boards or through the services of “black recruiters”. These insiders are paid for their services and can also be asked to identify co-workers who could be engaged through blackmail.

    The blackmailing approach has grown in popularity following online data breaches such as the Ashley Madison leak, as these provide attackers with material they can use to threaten or embarrass individuals. In fact, data-leak related extortion has now become so widespread that the FBI issued a Public Service Announcement on June 1, warning consumers of the risk and its potential impact.

    The insiders most in demand

    According to the Kaspersky Lab researchers, if an attack on a cellular service provider is planned, criminals will seek out employees who can provide fast track access to subscriber and company data or SIM card duplication/illegal reissuing. If the target is an internet service provider, the attackers will try to identify those who can enable network mapping and man-in-the-middle attacks.

    However, insider threats can take all forms. The Kaspersky Lab researchers noted two non-typical examples, one of which involved a rogue telecoms employee leaking 70 million prison inmate calls, many of which breached client-attorney privilege. In another example, an SMS center support engineer was spotted on a popular DarkNet forum advertising their ability to intercept messages containing OTP (One-Time Passwords) for the two-step authentication required to login to customer accounts at a popular fintech company.

    “The human factor is often the weakest link in corporate IT security,” Kaspersky Lab security expert Denis Gorchakov said.

    “Technology alone is rarely enough to completely protect the organization in world where attackers don’t hesitate to exploit insider vulnerability. Companies can start by looking at themselves the way an attacker would. If vacancies carrying your company name or some of your data start appearing on underground message boards, then somebody somewhere has you in their sights. And the sooner you know about it, the better you can prepare.”

    Only 8% of teenagers in Singapore (versus 12% globally) feel that telecoms service providers understand their lifestyle and offer services to match it, according to research from Vanson Bourne.

    But at the same time, only 18% (30% globally) report experiencing poor customer service from their service provider over the past year, while 46% (same as globally) say that as a result, they will not use the same provider again. Significantly, a 41% of respondents shared this information with family and friends.

    The study, which was commissioned by Amdocs, covered 4,250 respondents (15-18 years) from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Brazil, India, Germany, Russia, Mexico, the Philippines and Singapore.

    Among respondents in Singapore, 49% (43% globally) believe their smartphone makes them smarter and “cooler”, while 55% (52% globally) check their social media accounts first thing in the morning. Almost half (31% globally) say they would probably not meet someone again if they didn’t have a WhatsApp account.

    Also, 56% say they prefer using emojis (47% globally) to sending emails, as they feel it allows them to express their feelings more clearly than words. A similar number said the same about posting photos (45% globally).

    In addition, teens demand constant internet connectivity, with 68% (56% globally) saying they are likely to feel anxious and alone if separated from the internet than if separated from family (51% versus 52% globally). The value of internet access is so significant that 56% (55% globally) strongly believe fast Internet access to be a human right.

    Further, 59% (61% globally) stream videos, compared to 20% (14% globally) who download.

    For TV, 47% (51% globally) stream versus 18% (11% globally) who download, while for music, 41% (46% globally) stream, compared to 37% (28% globally) who download. And they are typically doing so for free, with less than a third saying they ever pay for content.

    The study also found that teens perceive content and app providers as “service providers” and love them more, they want to harness technology to design their own experiences, and they expect future technology to allow them to become digital beings as much as human beings.
