    Telegram users on Android can now send video and audio content to their TVs through Chromecast, a key feature of the messaging app’s latest update.     Telegram banned across Russian regions in unprecedented twist of fate

    Talk about an unexpected surprise: the popular messaging app Telegram has been banned across two regions in Russia for fear of enemies of the state using it to plan attacks. Telegram has long been heralded for its commitment to user privacy, but it has also been accused of being Russian spyware.

    The ban has been imposed across the Russian regions of Dagestan and Chechnya as authorities reported a rise in extremism. An example of a concerning instance from 2023 was provided as proof of the app being used for malicious purposes.

    This isn’t the first time that Telegram has gotten into trouble in Russia but the ban across Dagestan and Chechnya looks like it will stay for a long time. Authorities are urging residents to switch to alternatives and saying that Telegram may or may not be unbanned in the future.

    This is far from the first time that Telegram has made the news in the last few months. Telegram founder Pavel Durov was arrested in France last year on charges of facilitating organized crime on the platform. These charges alleged that due to Telegram’s stance on user privacy and anonymity the platform was responsible for whatever took place in its servers.

    Eventually, after so many years of resisting it, Telegram caved to legal pressure. Durov stated that the app would now provide users’ IP addresses and phone numbers to authorities upon request. Telegram had often been blamed for breeding radical cells in the past.

    Funnily enough, some people have always believed that Telegram is Russian spyware. With it now being blocked in regions of its own home country, that belief becomes all the more humorous, in my opinion. I’ve also always maintained that Telegram is no more to blame for nefarious activities than Discord or other platforms that offer end-to-end encryption.

    Some people view Telegram as part of the dark side of the internet: an app that only elite hackers or criminals use. But Telegram is a massively popular platform with all sorts of chat rooms and servers. I personally have met some amazing people on Telegram and I hope the situation in Russia can be handled sooner rather than later.

    Telegram adds the ability to verify phone numbers for businesses

    Telegram continues to make concessions in order to comply with various rules imposed by regulators. After being pressured to provide customers’ phone numbers and IP addresses to authorities, Telegram announced this week that it will allow businesses to verify the phone numbers of their customers.

    The latest update also introduces the ability to send gifts for Telegram Stars, as well as a brand-new redesigned video chat UI on iOS. In addition, Telegram is adding support for livestreaming with RTMP on Android and an improved reporting interface.

    Going back to the new verification platform launched by Telegram, the company announced that starting this week, any business, app or website can send verification codes via Telegram and pay for them on Fragment.

    According to the messaging app, these verification codes are faster, cheaper, more secure and convenient than SMS or other alternatives. If you’re using Telegram and interact with a business, you might receive a message with a code in a special chat inside the app.

    Besides the verification platform for businesses, Telegram is adding the ability for users to send each other gifts for Telegram Stars. Once you receive a gift, you can immediately display it on the new Gifts tab of your profile. You can even discard the gift and get some of its Stars to spend elsewhere, including on more gifts.

    If you want to send a gift to someone, simply open the user’s profile and tap Send a Gift. You can also add any message or emoji to the gift before sending it. Even though you can choose to hide your name, the recipient will still know who sent it, but no one else will be able to see your name if the gift is displayed on their profile.

    Moving on to the new video chat UI, Telegram confirmed it has redesigned video chats on iOS to increase performance and improve battery life. According to Telegram, longer calls will not overheat your iPhone anymore, even with multiple video feeds from dozens of participants.

    Last but not least, Telegram now features an improved reporting interface. For example, the reporting menu has been expanded with more detailed options for each category. Also, the list of reporting reasons is being dynamically updated from the server, which means that it will allow Telegram to suggest the most relevant reporting reasons in real-time.

    Video messages now offer the option to use the front flash for better lighting in low-light conditions. Stories can be augmented with an animated weather widget, automatically adapting to the viewer’s temperature unit preference and displaying the moon phase on clear nights. When sharing video stories on profiles, users can select a specific frame as the cover photo.

    Furthermore, Telegram for macOS now boasts a revamped browser with tabs supporting a variety of content, including games, mini apps, instant view pages, and Web3 ton-sites.

    Accessing Copilot on Telegram is straightforward, requiring users to search for the bot and share their Telegram phone number with Microsoft. This step, while necessary for functionality, might raise some eyebrows among Telegram users who value the app’s strong emphasis on privacy.

    While Copilot for Telegram mirrors many features of its counterparts, it does come with certain constraints. Unlike some other AI chatbots, it currently focuses on text-based interactions and does not support image generation. However, its capabilities are far from limited. Microsoft highlights Copilot’s ability to perform internet searches, provide movie recommendations, generate workout routines, assist with coding tasks, translate conversations, and offer quick facts.

    Users should note that there is a daily limit of 30 conversational turns, which means the user and Copilot can only exchange 30 messages back and forth within a 24-hour period. This limitation aims to manage resource allocation while ensuring fair access for all users.

    After celebrating 10 years last month, Telegram announced a bunch of new features and improvements for both regular and Premium users. Among the most important changes included in this update are the ability for channels to post stories and new reaction stickers that are now available in Stories.

    Starting today, Telegram users can grant channels the ability to post stories by giving them boosts. However, only Telegram Premium users are getting one boost that can be assigned to any channel.

    Each channel can level up once they gain more boosts and, more importantly, for each level Telegram users can post one additional story per day. It’s a rather complicated system meant to encourage people to pay for Premium if they want to boost their Stories.

    Telegram also announced that channels can ask subscribers for boosts using a special link. The link can be generated by heading to Channel Info / More / Statistics / Boosts. Once a channel reaches level 10, it will get +15 resistance to trolls and unlock unique admin skins, whatever that might mean.

    Additionally, once a channel unlocks Stories, admins with a Telegram Premium subscription can post by tapping the plus icon on the Channel Info page. Furthermore, the latest update introduces the ability to add reaction stickers to Stories. Each story posted by channels will now show reaction counters to allow users to see how many people chose each emotion. A new icon in the sticker panel is now available for those who wish to add a reaction sticker. Premium subscribers can use any of their custom emoji in addition to the regular stickers.

    With the latest version of Telegram, users can use audio files from their devices in photo and video stories. Make sure to tap “Audio” from the sticker panel and select a file to be able to adjust the track if you want to select a specific part.

    Finally, Telegram is getting new login alerts. The latest version of the app will send notifications to all your devices. The new logins will also display an alert at the top of the chat list.

    If Telegram is one of the messaging apps you use then you probably already know that a little less than a month ago it finally got a long-awaited feature: Stories. Besides being one of the last messaging apps to adopt Stories, Telegram even made the arguably bad decision of putting them behind a paywall.

    Okay, to be precise, Stories weren’t exactly paywalled. While those with a Premium Telegram subscription could create and upload them, others could only watch. Now if that is not blatantly greedy we don’t know what is. Thankfully, the company has come to its senses and announced that everyone will be able to post Stories on their profile from now on.

    But wait, isn’t this change unfair to those who have already paid for the $4.99 Premium subscription plan? Well, no. The rest of the story-related perks that came with a Premium subscription are still exclusive to it. Among these is the ability to go into stealth mode, which allows you to watch other people’s Stories without them knowing (creepy if you ask us…).

    Other Premium features with Telegram Stories include longer captions, permanent view history (meaning you can see who’s viewed your stories even after they expire), showing up higher on other people’s feeds, and an increased cap of up to 100 stories. Outside of Stories, a Premium membership also gets rid of all ads on the platform, and enables larger file uploads and faster downloads, and transcriptions.

    Uploading a Story on Telegram is quite straightforward and similar to competitors like Instagram. You can tag other people, use photos and videos from your library or directly shoot from the app. Telegram’s twist on the format comes in the form of customizable expiration times. You can choose between 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours.

    If you paid that 5 bucks just to be able to upload Stories on Telegram, now is the time to unsubscribe. Just make sure you have your app updated so you get the feature.

    Messaging app Telegram has just announced numerous improvements coming to its users in the following days. Shareable chat folders, custom wallpapers, better bots, fast scrolling for attachments, and many other new features and improvements are part of the latest Telegram update.

    Starting with the latest version of Telegram, users can share entire chat folders with just one link. It makes it infinitely easier to invite friends to groups, collections of news channels, and more. Not to mention that each chat folder supports multiple invite links allowing access to different chats.

    Now you can create custom wallpapers from your favorite photos and color combinations. These can be used in specific chats. Simply use the “Set Wallpaper” setting from the three dots menu on Android or open a profile and tap “Change Wallpaper” from the three dots menu on iOS.

    The latest Telegram update brings better bots, the developer announced today. They can now host web apps, which can be launched in any chat. Additionally, Telegram revealed that web apps can now support collaboration and multiplayer features for members when launched in a group.

    As mentioned earlier, the update makes scrolling for attachments faster, just like Shared Media. Finally, the update brings numerous improvements to various interfaces. For example, the Send When Online interface now requires fewer taps. Also, Telegram users can now create groups without adding members immediately, which is handy if they want to set up permissions and pin one or more messages first.

    More importantly, in groups of under 100 members that have topics enabled, you’ll now be able to see what time other group members read your messages. A much-needed quality-of-life improvement.

    If you’re using one of the newest iPhones, you’ll be happy to know that profile pictures in Telegram have a new animation when scrolling on profiles and info pages.

    OTT services like Telegram, WhatsApp must be managed locally

    Over-the-top media services, including popular messaging apps like Telegram, need to be managed under the Law on Telecommunications, according to amendments to it proposed by the government.

    The Ministry of Information and Communications said OTT services could be considered direct substitutes for traditional communications like calling and texting, and popular apps like Zalo, Viber, Telegram, and WhatsApp come under this category.

    “There are currently no provisions in the law for managing them, and so there is no way to protect users and information safety and security.”

    The ministry also called for a level playing field for domestic and foreign businesses. Specifically, for OTT telecom services that collect fees, domestic providers need to be approved to do so, while international providers need to have commercial agreements with an approved domestic provider to do so, it proposed.

    Even for OTT telecom services that do not have fees, the ministry proposed that their providers still need to register with the information ministry. International, large-scale providers with service in Vietnam meanwhile must either have commercial agreements or place their representative offices in Vietnam to make sure they abide by local law.

    At a conference held Thursday to discuss the amendments, Vu Tu Thanh of the U.S.-ASEAN Business Council said OTT service providers have no connection with telecom providers.

    “For instance requiring Viber to sign an agreement with VNPT … We don’t know exactly what terms such an agreement would have,” Thanh said.

    Officials proposing the amendments yet said managing OTT services will ensure users’ protection and information security.

    The popular messaging app Telegram has recently rolled out a new update that includes several exciting features. Among these updates are a new power-saving mode, optimization for Android devices with lower-end hardware, more playback speed choices, and many other app improvements.

    The announcement was made directly by the company via its blog. Now, Telegram has introduced a new power-saving mode that helps users conserve battery life and reduces data usage. This especially helps when rendering the app’s animations and effects. Users now have the option to deactivate these effects to prolong battery life and improve performance on older devices.
    You can configure Power Saving Mode so that it turns on by itself once your battery approaches a certain percentage, and it comes with individual toggles that let you deactivate particular effects. This mode is available on both iOS and Android, with an extra feature on iOS to limit background updates, although it is not recommended by Telegram or else you will be seeing the message “Updating…” displayed on your app a lot more frequently. Power Saving Mode can be turned on and customized via the Settings > Power Saving menu.

    For Android, the folks at Telegram developed default settings optimized to ensure every user has the best possible experience. These settings were tested on more than 200 different kids of Android devices to ensure the app works at its peak on each one.

    Aside from the power saving options, Telegram is also introducing more granular playback speed options, such as being able to hold the 2X button to choose speeds between 0.2x and 2.5x. Additionally, read receipts for groups with less than 100 participants will now show via a popup the time each person read the message. Talk about being diligent!
    Other features introduced by this update include the ability to send invite links as a message in the event that the person you are inviting is restricting who is allowed to add them to groups, the option to switch off the automatic reorganizing of sticker packs, improved folder support on iOS, interactive Emoji and reactions, and new animated Emoji for premium users.
    Finally, Telegram promises that aside from the new features it has also squashed over 400 bugs across the app, but also encourages users to head on over to bugs.telegram.org to report any issues found on this new update.

    Telegram typically pushes out major updates once a month, and February is no exception. After adding the ability to hide spoilers in media content and other features in late 2022, Telegram recently released yet another update that brings even more new features to Android and iOS users.

    The highlights of February’s update include a profile photo maker, real-time message translation, and emoji categories. Depending on how you’re using Telegram, some of these new features might be more important than others.

    As the first Telegram update of the year, the new piece of content introduces no less than 10 major features. With the new profile pictures maker, Telegram users can turn stickers or animated emoji into a profile pictures that can be used for accounts, groups, and even channels. The new feature is not locked behind the Premium subscription, so everyone can use it once they updated to the latest version of Telegram.

    Another premiere for Telegram is the ability to translate entire chats, groups and channels in real time. The Translate bar at the top of the app will make this complex task a breeze. You can even hide the bar and control which languages are translated. The bad news is you have to pay for Premium to be able to use real-time chat translation.

    For those who are obsessed by data, the update makes it possible to see how much data has been used by the app with detailed pie charts for both mobile data and Wi-Fi. You can even adjust the auto-download settings the way you want.

    There’s also a new menu from where Telegram users can control when media is saved automatically to the gallery based on size, type and which chat it was received from. Additionally, the menu makes it possible to filter your media by using exceptions.

    Telegram has so many emoji that more often than not it’s hard to find what you want. The latest update introduces emoji categories in the panel. You can also hold any emoji to zoom in to get a better look at it before sending.

    Telegram announced a new update that brings some new features for Premium users and some visual changes available to everyone. The most significant change included in the update is the addition of voice-to-text for video messages, which is now available for Telegram Premium users.

    Previously, subscribers could convert any voice message to text, but the latest update adds the same functionality to video messages. If you’re paying for Premium, you’ll now be allowed to get an instant text transcript of a video message.

    Apart from that, Telegram introduced Topics in Groups, a new feature that allows groups with over 200 members to enable topics and create separate spaces for any subject. The new feature works as individual chats within the group and supports their own shared media and notification settings.

    Another interesting new functionality included in the update, a collectible username, is meant to make it easy for others to contact Telegram users or find their public groups in channels. Besides one basic username, Telegram users can now assign multiple collectible usernames to each of their accounts and public chats. These can be less than 5 characters long and can be traded via blockchain.

    Once again, Telegram is showing emoji fans a lot of love. The latest update adds 12 new emoji packs available for Premium users, some made specifically for Halloween.

    Telegram users on iOS will be getting a redesigned Night Mode. Dark themes have been updated to make colors more balanced with better blurring effects as users scroll in chats and the chat list.

    As far as Android users go, the update introduces new options to resize text. If you want to increase the size of chat text, including link previews, reply headers and more, you’ll find the new functionality in Chat Settings.

    Finally, some minor design improvements have been implemented too. For example, a new animation has been added when swiping left to reply. Also, tapping a user’s phone number in their profile page will now open a new menu with several call options.

    Telegram founder publicly attacks Apple’s Safari browser for iOS for its restrictions

    Currently, there’s an investigation by a UK agency on Apple and Safari. And, it seems the UK is not the only one raising its brows when it comes to Apple’s web browser. Telegram founder Pavel Durov has now publicly criticized the iOS version of Safari, accusing it of restricting developer options for the web.

    Durov has shared his criticism on his public channel on Telegram. He claims that Apple is intentionally restricting web app features and that this limits developers from what they can do in iOS. The restrictions that Apple currently has for web apps impact the web version of Telegram too.

    Additionally, he suspects Apple’s reasoning behind this is to force users to download native apps from the App Store, and he brings up the 30% commission fee that Apple takes on purchases made via the App Store. Many developers have had issues with the infamous ‘Apple Tax’, as this 30% cut has unofficially been called.

    Telegram is available in the App Store; however, not everything was sailing smoothly for the company. In the past, Telegram has reportedly faced some issues with Apple’s review process because of its public channels (where there are no content restrictions). Telegram has a web version with all the same features – but it is also limited on iPads and iPhones.

    “Safari is killing the web” points out Durov, citing developers complaining about Apple’s native browser and a blog post on HTTP Toolkit, which lists multiple ways in which Safari is not helping the web. The blog post lists reasons such as Safari omitting features, many bugs present and the slow speed at which those are fixed, and ignoring proposed APIs by the Chrome team.

    Apart from citing the mentioned above article, Durov also highlights that Telegram developers have signaled a list of 10 issues they have with Safari on iOS. Among those, there is the lack of push notifications, random reloading, slow application of blur effects, and sometimes appearing visual artifacts. The post also includes a few more development-related things missing from Safari’s toolkit.

    The UK investigation, which we mentioned in the beginning of this article, is also highlighted in Durov’s post. He hopes that the investigation will lead to regulatory action against Apple Safari’s restrictions and shortcomings.

    The investigation he is talking about is actually going to be led by UK’s CMA, a watchdog who’s recently found Apple and Google to have an “effective duopoly” in the mobile tech market because of Safari and Chrome. The agency is now going to look at Safari’s WebKit restrictions under a microscope, to determine whether or not those are harming competition and innovation.

    What started as a rumor a few months ago has become reality this week: Telegram is going Premium. Well, the free tier will remain available as is, but a paid tier will also be added which will offer some extra features, resources and speed.

    Telegram’s founder and CEO, Pavel Durov, announced today that his company will introduce a Premium tier this month, but he did not make any mentions regarding the price. Previous rumors pointed to a possible $5/month subscription for those who want Telegram Premium, but the information hasn’t been confirmed yet.

    What we do know is that all existing features will remain free, and even users who don’t subscribe to Telegram Premium will get some of its benefits, such as the ability to view extra-large documents, media and stickers sent by Premium users, as well as the option to tap to add Premium reactions already pinned to a message to react in the same way.

    The addition of a Premium tier is meant to keep existing features free while offering those who want more the chance to acquire those extra features they need, at least according to Telegram. On top of that, a Premium subscription will allow users to support eh app and receive new features before those who use Telegram for free.

    We will probably never know whether the move is meant to simply support the extra resources Telegram will spend to add those new features or the company plans to actually make money to pay the bills. The bottom line is that even Telegram’s CEO believes that the app “should be funded primarily by its users, not advertisers,” which implies that the amount of ads will remain limited.

    Telegram has a new update that’s bringing a few quite useful features to the popular chat app. The app is now getting a redesigned interface for Android, a new Download Manager, phone links, and more.

    The update was announced in a Telegram blog post. One of the most noteworthy features that the new update brings is the new phone number links feature. Before this update, you could create a username on Telegram and share your t.me/username link with other people so that they can find you on the app without your phone number. However, such usernames are public and people can find you in a global search.

    With this new update, Telegram is bringing the possibility to share a direct t.me link with your phone number that instantly opens up a chat with you. The format for these links is t.me/phone number, and you have to use your full number in the international format, with the code of your country and a + sign in front of it.

    Pretty much, these links do not make you searchable by anyone while still allowing your friends to find you with your phone number more easily. Keep in mind that in order for this to work, you need to set your privacy settings so that others can find you on the app by your phone number.

    With this new update, when you download files, a new icon will appear in the search bar. You can tap on it or go to the “Downloads” tab in Search, where you can view, pause, resume, or prioritize downloads. On top of that, you can use it when sending multiple photos to see a preview of the album, rearrange photos, or remove some before sending it.

    But that’s not all. Telegram for Android is getting a new look, with a new transparency effect. The company calls it a semi-transparent interface for Android. In fact, it is a look that is seen in Night Mode. With this new look, panels and headers become subtly transparent, this way making chat backgrounds, stickers, and media files more noticeable. Another new thing coming to the Android app is a refined login screen which will now have smoother animations.

    Additionally, the update brings support for live streaming with other apps. So far, Telegram Groups and Channels support live video broadcasts with an unlimited number of viewers. However, now you will be able to broadcast from streaming tools like OBS Studio and XSplit Broadcaster, which adds overlays and multi-screen layouts easily. This way, any Telegram channel can be seamlessly transformed into a professional TV Station.

    And last but not least, this Telegram update brings a new look to the t.me link pages. This is the place where anyone can preview profiles, posts, or entire public channels in their browser. The web previews are now getting a new look with chat backgrounds and design elements from the Telegram Web client.

    Back in December 2021, Telegram had another big update that brought Telegram chat reactions with emoji, a feature that’s quite useful and fun to use in chat apps, as well as message translations.

    Additionally, the update back then brought spoiler alerts that can help you hide some text behind a blurry look. Of course, choosing to ignore the spoiler alert will let you tap on the message and view it anyway like it is on other popular platforms such as Reddit.
