AirAsia CEO ‘bullish’ on beating Omicron as airline announces resumption of Phnom Penh flights

AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes has urged governments to stop “overreacting” to the emergence of the new Omicron variant of Covid-19 and focus on reducing the cost of PCR testing instead.

“It’s a huge overreaction. We don’t know anything about this variant yet. Let’s wait and see before we jump the gun,” Mr. Fernandes said at a virtual address at Bangkok Post’s International Forum 2021 dubbed “Unleashing the Future: A Glimpse into 2022 and Beyond” on Thursday.

Air Asia has also hinted that Cambodia is one potential market for new ventures. Current group president for airlines Bo Lingam says: “We will continue to review new markets to operate from in the future, like Cambodia for example when we can connect Southeast Asia once again with the best value fares and lifestyle offerings.”

The chief executive of the low-cost carrier said the world is more equipped and better prepared to deal with Omicron — first detected in South Africa — than previous strains.

Air Asia is also reportedly looking at resuming Kuala Lumpur-Phnom Penh flights in January 26 to take advantage of Chinese New Year travelers. During its heydays prior to COVID-19, it used to mount three flights a day.

“There are Merck pills, and Pfizer pills are coming out. We are vaccinated. There are boosters available. I’m feeling much more bullish, and I am not doom and gloom,” he said.

“Governments need to use common sense and see what is needed. I think travel restrictions and such measures are temporary, and the world is global. No matter how much we close the borders, the viruses will travel.”

He criticized the pricing and frequency of the PCR tests required by many governments, including Thailand, when travelers enter their borders. He said this risks deterring passengers from taking a vacation despite the pent-up demand to venture overseas.

“No government has looked at the cost of the PCR test. PCR tests in Southeast Asia are extremely [expensive]. It’s unfair for passengers to pay that kind of cost. Of course, we want to be safe, but make it as simple as possible.”

He praised Thailand for planning to reduce some of these charges and procedures.

“Thailand is ahead of the rest of ASEAN, which are still quite draconian,” he said, referring to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

“In Malaysia, we have a seven-day quarantine. It’s a start. At least we are opening up borders, but there’s a long way to go before we get to where we used to be.”

As for AirAsia’s operations and outlook for 2022, Mr. Fernandes said he had restructured the company and pivoted to more digital businesses.

So far, the low-cost carrier has launched three logistics businesses — a food delivery super-app, online bank BigPay, and parcel delivery service Teleport. The company has no plans to cut routes yet, it said.

The group CEO was optimistic about the future of the aviation industry. He said he expects low-cost carriers to bounce back faster than full-service airlines as most passengers prefer to travel short distances. Moreover, business travelers are getting used to attending meetings virtually instead of in person, he said.

  • Google is testing two features for mobile YouTube users

Google is testing two features for mobile YouTube users

Google has been busy testing new features on the mobile version of YouTube. Remember back in 2007 when one ad for the Apple iPhone said that “maybe the biggest surprise is finding YouTube on your phone.” But these days, every iOS and Android phone has access to the streaming video site and Google continues to improve the UI and functionality of the app.

For example, a limited number of Android users are in the process of testing a feature called Loop video that is already offered to those running the desktop version of YouTube. With this feature, a video will automatically continue to play over and over again. This really isn’t meant for a long movie like Titanic (which runs for three hours and 30 minutes), but for short music videos that can be over in under four minutes.

If you have an Android device, you can look for the Loop video option by tapping the three-dot menu button. The feature does have an icon consisting of a right-facing arrow on top, a left-facing arrow at the bottom with the number “1” sandwiched in between.

Also being tested is another feature called Clip that allows YouTube users to create 60-second video clips from existing videos. The clip you create can then be shared with others. Clip, which uses the image of a scissor for its icon, is being tested on both Android and iOS devices which means that you might not see it on your device at the moment.

  • Thai Airways to open flight simulators to public

Thai Airways to open flight simulators to public

Thai Airways is opening up its Boeing and Airbus flight simulators to the public this October in its latest bid to boost business amid the drop in travel demand due to the coronavirus crisis.

As part of the airline’s “Thai Flying Experience and Beyond” project, customers will get to enter a mock cockpit of an A380, B777-300ER, B747-400, and a B737-400 aircraft.

“Pilots and co-pilots will accommodate customers throughout the entire session,” reads a statement from the carrier.

According to Thai Airways, customers can choose from the following three packages:

    • Basic Package (30 minutes) 12,000 Baht for two users
    • Deluxe Package (60 minutes) 24,000 Baht for two users
    • Ultimate Package (90 minutes) 36,000 Baht for three users

The flight simulator project is the airline’s latest effort to generate revenue amid the Covid-19 pandemic as flights continue to remain grounded, and the airline looks to restructure 245 billion baht ($7.83 billion) worth of debt.

Earlier this month, the national airline converted the cafeteria of its headquarters in Bangkok into a plane-themed restaurant.

  • Bentley’s New Engineering Test Facility In UK Nears Completion

Bentley’s New Engineering Test Facility In UK Nears Completion

A new state-of-the-art engineering test facility, built at the headquarters of Bentley Motors in Crewe, UK, is nearing completion. In place of the traditional final beam marking the occasion, a native British Oak tree was planted by Members of the Bentley Board for Manufacturing and Engineering, laying down roots for the future. The engineering test facility is the latest phase in on-going development at the Pyms Lane site where all Bentleys are handcrafted. With topping out traditionally celebrated with the final construction beam being fitted, Bentley instead planted a tree to signify the company’s continued commitment to increasing sustainability and developing biodiversity around its site in Crewe.

Dr. Matthias Rabe, Member of the Board for Engineering commented “This new facility will further enhance our already industry-leading, modern factory headquarters and will enable us to grow as we look towards the electrification of our model range. Additionally, and crucially, it will allow us the independence to test our own engines as we rapidly accelerate our journey towards electrification.”

The facility will complete full internal construction and open in 2021, covering more than 4,600 square meters over two stories. There will also be a dedicated laboratory to run Real Driving Emissions (RDE) using the latest state-of-the-art portable emissions measurement systems. Bentley’s Technical Conformity department will be based in the test center, with over 100 people working in the building.

The center will allow Bentley to meet increased consumer demand for its current range of ultra-luxury vehicles, including the performance-orientated Flying Spur, the Continental GT, and the New Bentayga. The British marque has already confirmed that it will offer hybrid or electric variants of all of its models by 2023. It will allow Bentley to carry out the latest WLTP fuel and efficiency test procedures more swiftly in-house.

  • Range Rover Evoque Scores 5 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test

Range Rover Evoque Scores 5 Stars In Euro NCAP Crash Test

The second-generation Land Rover Range Rover Evoque was recently crash tested by the Euro NCAP and results are finally out. The new 2019 Range Rover Evoque has bagged a 5-star rating in the crash test, scoring 94 per cent for adult occupant protection and 87 per cent for child occupant protection. Furthermore, for pedestrian protection and safety assist features, the 2019 model has scored 72 and 73 per cent rating, respectively. The second-generation Range Rover Evoque was unveiled last year in November and in addition to updated design and styling, the SUV comes with a host of advanced safety and comfort features.

According to the Euro NCAP report, in terms of safety, the new Range Rover Evoque has made major progress in the area of vulnerable road user protection with the adoption of an active bonnet and AEB for pedestrian and cyclist detection. Commenting on the SUV’s improved safety standard, Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP says, “It is encouraging to see the continued widespread deployment and improvement of advanced technologies such as AEB and lane support. It is good news that some of the basic driver assist technologies will finally be mandated from 2022, but thankfully most vehicle manufacturers are already way ahead of the curve today.”

The highlights of the new Range Rover Evoque’s safety features include – auto emergency braking (AEB) function for pedestrian, cyclist, city and Intra-urban. The SUV also comes with active bonnet function, speed assistance and lane assist system. These, of course, are in addition to features like dual front, side, and curtain airbags, seatbelt pretensioner with load limiter, seatbelt reminder, ISOFIX child seat mount, and airbag cut-off switch.

The Euro NCAP tested the SUV for front offset impact, full frontal impact, rear whiplash impact, and lateral impact. In all these scenarios, the results showed that for adult occupants the protection levels always either good or adequate, except for rear whiplash impact where protection for the rear seat passengers’ necks was recorded as just marginal. On the other hand, in terms of child occupant safety, the protection levels were always rated good. The NCAP test also proved that in city driving condition, the vehicle’s Auto Emergency Brakes (AEB) was rated Good in all three test scenarios – left offset, right offset and no offset.

  • BMW Blames Trade Headwinds with Emissions Tests

BMW Blames Trade Headwinds with Emissions Tests

Profits at German high-end carmaker BMW tumbled in 2018, the firm said Friday, with trade headwinds and tough new EU emissions tests’ drag on performance set to last into this year.

“Challenges facing the entire sector are unlikely to diminish in the coming months,” chief executive Harald Krueger said in a statement. Net profit at BMW slumped 16.9 percent to 7.2 billion euros ($8.2 billion), the group said.

The Munich-based firm pointed to “political uncertainty, a cooling global economy… rising production costs to meet regulatory requirements, exchange rate effects and rising raw materials prices” as weights on its earnings.

Operating, or underlying, profits fell less sharply, shedding 7.9 percent to 9.1 billion euros. Revenues were less strongly affected, falling 0.8 percent to 97.5 billion. Other carmakers’ scramble to sell cars not certified under the so-called WLTP test cycle before its introduction in September led to “unexpectedly intense competition”, BMW said, penalising the group for its decision to adopt the new procedure early.

Meanwhile the group’s bottom line also suffered as it was ordered to recall over a million diesel cars to replace faulty components. BMW boosted unit sales at its flagship brand slightly, to 2.1 million cars, but deliveries of Minis fell back 2.8 percent, to 361,500. Luxury subsidiary Rolls-Royce lifted shipments 22 percent, to 4,107. Looking to different world regions, sales in Europe were flat while the Americas and Asia recorded slight growth.

“Volumes grew signficantly” in China as BMW ramped production of X3 SUVs locally, the group said.

Bosses said they would offer shareholders their second-highest dividend payout ever, at 3.50 euros per share. Looking ahead to 2019, BMW expects a “slight increase” in unit sales, in part thanks to new models. Investors offered a mildly positive reaction to the news, with BMW stock gaining 1.1 percent to trade at 74.59 euros around 11:30 am in Frankfurt (1030 GMT).

  • Huawei, LG U+ achieve 31Gbps peak in 5G tests

Huawei, LG U+ achieve 31Gbps peak in 5G tests

Huawei and South Korea’s LG U+ have completed a series of joint 5G tests based on three commercial scenarios – enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-reliable low latency communications (uRLLC) and massive machine-type communications (mMTC).

The various tests achieved a cell peak rate of 31Gbps on high-frequency bandwidth and Massive MIMO, as well as latency under 0.5ms and mMTC single-cell massive connections.

During the test procedures the two companies also verified key 5G New Radio technologies, including simultaneous use of short transmission time intervals and filtered orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (f-OFDM), as well as sparse-code multiple access (SCMA).

Huawei and LG U+ signed an agreement in July 2015 to jointly develop 5G technologies. The companies had already opened a joint R&D lab in Seoul dedicated to research into LTE-A and 5G.

“LG U+ is dedicated to creating new better life for our customers through maximized value and improved experience,” LG U+ VP Kang Jung Ho said.

“We hope to provide the availability of 5G services for Korean users by 2018, and Huawei’s innovation insights and accumulated expertise will help us in achieving this goal.”

Huawei VP for wireless networks Gan Bin added that the companies plan to strengthen their 5G collaboration in the future.
