All terrain Michelin LTX Force SUV tyres launched in India

Tyre maker Michelin has today announced the availability of Michelin LTX Force range of SUV tyres in India. Designed for all types of terrain, Michelin LTX Force tyres offer durability, superior grip on-road and higher traction off-road, claims the company statement.

The introduction of this new range in India helps the company further strengthen its product portfolio.

Mohan Kumar, Commercial Director, Michelin India said, “The SUV market is one of the fastest growing segments in India. Industry estimates indicate one in four vehicles sold last year was an SUV and as more Indians opt for SUV’s, this segment is estimated to continue growing, both in cities and upcountry towns. Our LTX Force is an all-rounder and is ideal for SUV owners who regularly use their vehicle on both paved and unpaved road.”

” Innovation is at the heart of our product development and this tyre is a perfect example of it, where we showcase a seamless transformation from track to road. By using this range, the SUV users in India will benefit from the international technology that has enjoyed numerous podium finishes at grueling all terrain competitions such as Rally WRC.” he added.

Michelin LTX Force uses compact tread technology which takes advantage of two contradictory performances: durability plus grip. The tread pattern inspired by endurance races is designed to provide a greater contact area thanks to higher tread blocks which favours both durability and traction.

The comoany claims that the tyres are a result of tried and tested motorsport technologies

Motorsport offers the ideal proving ground for Michelin to test tyres in the most extreme conditions. Michelin LTX Force tyre is yet another example of our from track to road philosophy. These tyres have been tested in extreme mining conditions to ensure off-road traction and robustness.

The Michelin LTX Force range tyres are available nationally at Michelin premium dealerships – the Michelin Priority Partners, the TYREPLUS network and Michelin retailers.

  • Indonesia, Michelin Cooperate in Tire Exports

Indonesia, Michelin Cooperate in Tire Exports

The Indonesian government has joined hands with French tire company Michelin to open market access to Europe and the United States. The plan was proposed in a meeting between Industry Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Vice President Public Affairs of Michelin East-Asia and Oceania Segsarn Trai-Ukos in Jakarta last week.

According to Airlangga, the government and Michelin will also cooperate in aircraft tire retreading. “Michelin has developed tire retreading in Thailand,” he said yesterday.

He said that Michelin technology can help develop aircraft tire retreading in Indonesia and reduce negative perception of retreaded tires. High-tech retreaded tires can help lower airline costs and boost growth of air transport industry.

Indonesia and Michelin will also collaborate in utilizing used tires. According to Airlangga, Michelin is expected to process used tires into raw material for asphalt. He pointed to the example of 80 million units of two-wheeled vehicles with 160 million tires. “With an average lifespan of 1.5 to 2 years, abundant supply of used tires will be available to be utilized.”

The Minister also discussed business opportunities with French Ambassador to Indonesia Jean-Charles Berthonnet. Airlangga said that France can become Indonesia’s export gateway to the non-traditional European market.

He sees France as an important trade partner. In 2015, Indonesia’s import value from France hit US$1.3 billion for aircraft components, vehicles, machinery, milk, and pharmaceutical. Whereas, Indonesia’s export to France worth US$972 million, which include footwear, rubber, furniture, clothing, and coffee.

  • Continental Named as CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree

Continental Named as CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree

International automotive supplier and technology company Continental today announced that is has been named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Vehicle Intelligence category for its Short Range Radar with Trailer Merge Assist and Trailer Length Detection technology. Products entered in this prestigious program are judged by a preeminent panel of independent industrial designers, independent engineers and members of the trade media to honor outstanding design and engineering in cutting edge consumer electronics products across 28 product categories.

“Technologies that are selected as CES Innovation Honorees demonstrate an incredible level of innovation and engineering in an industry where the bar is set remarkably high,” said Samir Salman, CEO of Continental, North America. “Continental is honored to receive this award which exemplifies our commitment to safety by engineering leading automotive technologies.”

Continental’s state-of-the-art Short Range Radar with Trailer Merge Assist and Trailer Length Detection is a “black box” sensor mounted in the rear/side area of the vehicle. The radar uses intelligent sensing with a new software feature allowing for the blind spot detection to be enhanced and extended by sophisticated object tracking, measurement and length detection algorithms allowing for the extended warning.

“The intelligent radar detects the trailer, automatically measures its length and extends the warning zone to the area beyond the trailer,” said Lutz Kuehnke, Head of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, Continental, North America. “These features reduce the risk of accidents and increases driver confidence while towing and merging a vehicle with a trailer.”

This is the first blind spot warning system that allows a driver to enjoy the function without driver input even while towing a trailer. Systems without this feature either disable the warning while towing a trailer or experience unintended or false warnings from the trailer.

The Short Range Radar is just one environmental sensor within Continental’s comprehensive product portfolio of future-oriented advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Continental offers ADAS safety products and functions, as well as system solutions for assisted and automated driving including Long Range Radar, Camera, Surround View, High Flash 3-D Lidar and electronic control units.

Continental’s Short Range Radar with Trailer Merge Assist and Trailer Length Detection will be displayed at CES 2017, which runs January 5-8, 2017, in Las Vegas.

Kumho Tire auction to start in November

Creditors of Kumho Tire gave formal notice this week that they will hold an open auction for their respective holdings in the South Korean tyre manufacturer with preliminary bidding scheduled to start in early November.

The creditors involved are eight financial institutions including Woori Bank, state-owned Korea Development Bank and KB Kookmin Bank. Together they own 42% of the equity in the tyre manufacturer, worth some KRW760bn (US$680m) based on the current share price.

Kumho Tire graduated from a four-year creditor-led debt restructuring programme at the end of 2014 after it suffered a severe liquidity crisis in 2009.

The 50 year-old tyre manufacturer currently employs around 5,000 people in South Korea. It has nine tyre plants worldwide, three in South Korea, four in China and one each in Vietnam and the US. It generated global sales of KRW3.04 trillion (US$2.7bn) last year.

In the first half of 2016, the company generated revenues of KRW1.45trn and earnings of KRW55.8bn.

The auction will be organised by Credit Suisse bank which expects the final round of bidding to take place in January 2017 with a buyer expected to be selected shortly after that. The controlling equity stake is expected to cost around KRW1trn, including fees.

Park Sam-koo, the current chairman of the former owner of the company,Kumho Asiana Group, will have the right of first refusal to buy back the shares by matching the highest bid in the final auction. He has previously indicated that he would be interested in taking back control of the tyre manufacturer but it is unclear whether he has the financial backing to do so.

Other global tyre companies will be given the chance to bid and private equity companies are also expected to feature in the auction.

  • USW Seeks Tariffs on Bus and Truck Tires From China

USW Seeks Tariffs on Bus and Truck Tires From China

The United Steelworkers (USW) union has filed yet another petition asking the U.S. Government to impose anti-dumping and countervailing duties on tires manufactured in China. This time, the union is targeting truck and bus tires.

The petition was filed Jan. 29, 2016.

In it, the USW cites import data from the International Trade Commission (ITC), which points to an increase of more than 650,000 tires imported in the first nine months of 2015 compared to the same period in 2014.

    Jan.-Sept. 2014 Jan.-Sept. 2015
    Customs value $787,313,598 $817,636,180
    Number of tires 6,048,859 6,701,201

The USW has filed a petition seeking tariffs on truck and bus tires imported into the U.S. from China. It’s the second tariff request this month affecting the commercial tire business.

The USW has filed a petition seeking tariffs on truck and bus tires imported into the U.S. from China. It's the second tariff request this month affecting the commercial tire business.

As the petition notes, “the volume of subject imports from China is significant by any measure.

“From 2012 to 2014, the U.S. imported from 6.3 million to 8.4 million truck and bus tires a year from China, valued at close to over a billion dollars each year. China exported more tires to the U.S. than all other countries combined throughout the period.”

In the latest Modern Tire Dealer Facts Issue, published in January 2016, MTD estimated U.S. truck tire imports from China for 2015 at 9.4 million, up 14.6% from the previous year.

The petition covers all truck and bus tires with a “TR,” “MH” or “HC” suffix, as well as all tires listed in the “Truck-Bus” section of the Tire and Rim Association Year Book. Like the petition seeking tariffs on OTR tires from China, Sri Lanka and India, the truck and bus petition includes tires whether or not they’re mounted on wheels. The only truck or bus tires excluded from the petition are recycled and retreaded tires, and non-pneumatic tires, such as solid rubber tires.

The USW is asking the ITC to gather and compare prices on four sizes of tires:

11R22.5 (14 or 16 plies, load range G or H, any speed rating)

11R24.5 (14 or 16 plies, load range G or H, any speed rating)

295/75R22.5 (14 plies, load range G, any speed rating)

285/75R24.5 (14 plies, load range G, any speed rating)

In its petition, the USW says it represents workers at truck and bus tire production facilities in the U.S. Those plants are operated by Bridgestone Americas Inc. and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. Additional truck and bus tires are produced by non-union workforces for Continental Tire the Americas in Mount Vernon, Ill., General/Yokohama in Mount Vernon, Ill., and Michelin North America Inc. in Spartanburg, S.C.
