Tokyu Hands goes to global GIA Awards finale

Eclectic Japanese department store Tokyu Hands has been named one of the global finalists in this year’s GIA Awards in Chicago.

Tokyu Hands has 75 stores in Japan and three in Singapore, selling items including fashion and interior goods, but with kitchenwares and other household items as its core. Customers range from teens to seniors.

“Japanese consumers are said to have the harshest eye in the world for quality and design,” observed a spokesperson for the GIA (Global Innovation Awards). “Tokyu Hands’ buyers think deeply about what their customer wants before selecting products. The sales staff are highly skilled and very knowledgeable to meet the demands of customers with severe eyes. That’s a big reason for why many people visit the store.”

Another Japanese homewares chain, The Loft, won a GIA Award last year.

Other finalists from Asia in this year’s awards are Cuccina, a small homewares store in China, and Maissone in Singapore which sells offline and online.

Each national GIA winner is invited to the International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago where the global GIA jury, consisting of four experts representing Asia, Europe and the Americas, plus a rotating group of co-sponsoring trade publication editors from around the world, will select up to five GIA Global Honorees, the winners of the Martin M Pegler Award for Excellence in Visual Merchandising and the GIA Digital Commerce Award for Excellence in Online Retailing.

The winners from each region will be honored at a festive awards dinner on Saturday, March 10, during the 2018 International Home + Housewares Show in Chicago.

Japanese department store Tokyu Hands plans to boost its overseas sales, which now contribute 1 per cent of overall sales.

Overseas income for its latest year totalled about 800 million yen (US$7.69 million).

A third store is opening next month in Singapore, where Tokyo Hands has had managed stores for two years, and next year the group plans to start trading in Malaysia.

Tokyu Hands opened its first overseas branch in Taiwan in 2000 and now has 15 franchised stores on the island.

Takenori Tsuji, who heads Tokyu Hands’ international business, says the Taiwan stores are mainly in Taipei with management entrusted to the franchisees, “but we consult on the selection of merchandise and store layout”.

He says trends in Japan, such as aging consumers, have made it hard for the store to grow domestically.

Tokyu Hands’ first directly managed store overseas opened in China in 2012, but closed it in January this year. Tsuji says this was a result of management difficulties.

“It took more time and effort than expected to clear customs when we brought in products from Japan, making it hard for us to sell new products quickly.

“Some sales people quit soon after being hired, and it was hard to train Japanese employees in the local area.”
Six months after launching, the store had a temporary sharp drop in sales when relations between China and Japan worsened over the disputed Senkaku Islands. However, full-year sales were “reasonably good”.

Innovative Japanese lifestyle store Tokyu Hands is testing the Malaysian market through a pop-up store in Kuala Lumpur.

Open for two weeks until February 3, the pop-up store at Tokyo Street in the Pavilion shopping centre in downtown Kuala Lumpur is introducing more than 500 lifestyle products to Malaysia. The items range from household, stationery, skincare and cosmetics products to items that are particularly Japanese.

Tokyu Hands GM Shinji Fujikawa says the company wants to explore the retail market and understand consumer trends in Malaysia, reports The Star.

“This will be a great platform to build our brand.”

Store manager Takuya Furumaki says it is also a good opportunity for the brand to gauge the viability of its products.

“As Malaysians are quite familiar with Japanese culture, we are confident our products will do well.”

Tokyu Hands opened its first store in Shibuya, Tokyo, in 1976. It now has 40 stores throughout Japan, plus a presence in Singapore and Taiwan.

At the pop-up store’s launch, guests learned more about some of its stock through demonstrations and presentations featuring the most popular or useful items favoured by Japanese buyers, according to Tokyu Hands International Business Division buyer Marie Kusumoto.

Pavilion Kuala Lumpur marketing director Kung Suan Ai says that shoppers at Tokyu Hands do not just buy a product.

“You buy into an experience that enriches your life.”
