Mario Kart Tour beta registrations open for Android users

Nintendo plans to bring yet another game to Android and iOS device this summer – Mario Kart Tour. Officially revealed two months ago, the next Mario game for mobile won’t be released until at least June.

However, Nintendo fans will have a chance to take a peek at what’s to come thanks to the closed beta program the Japanese company has just announced. Assuming you’re living in the United States or Japan, you can now register for the Mario Kart Tour closed beta on the game’s dedicated page.

Unfortunately, it’s only Android users that are allowed to register for the closed beta, and there’s little chance the iPhone owners will be given the chance to test Mario Kart Tour before the official release.

Obviously, the number of Android users who may participate in the closed beta is limited. According to Nintendo, if the number of applications exceeds the number of possible participants, the company will randomly select the participants.

Android users can register for the closed beta between April 23 and May 7, while the beta test is scheduled for May 22-June 4, but these dates can be changed prior notice.

  • Halt to Hong Kong and Macau one-day trips

Halt to Hong Kong and Macau one-day trips

Travel agencies across Guangdong have been ordered to halt all one-day trips to Hong Kong and Macau on weekends via the cross-border bridge to reduce the nuisance suffered by the cities’ residents. The move comes about a week after Guangzhou tourism authorities issued an urgent notice asking travel agencies in the provincial capital to avoid taking groups of visitors across the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge at weekends.

Since the crossing opened to traffic on October 24, large numbers of mainland visitors have descended on the usually quiet neighbourhood of Tung Chung, on Lantau Island, crowding bus stops and emptying shop shelves.

Between October 17 and November 1, more than 1.78 million visas to Hong Kong and Macau were issued to applicants across Guangdong – mostly retirees – making for a year-on-year increase of 26.6 per cent, according to the province’s public security department.

Aside from Tung Chung residents and activists being upset by the large crowds, there have also been allegations that illegal tour operators were flouting employment laws that prevent mainlanders from working in Hong Kong.

The Guangdong Provincial Culture and Tourism Department said that it had taken three measures to “further reduce the pressure on the ports and the surrounding areas”.

In halting short weekend trips to Hong Kong and Macau via the bridge, it had encouraged travel agencies to arrange “quality trips that last two days or more”.

The other two measures were to get tourism authorities at municipal and lower levels to monitor the agencies closely, and control passenger flow through an online ticketing system for cross-border buses.

“After our department and other related authorities carried out the control measures, traffic on roads to the bridge’s port in Zhuhai has become smooth, and the number of passengers heading to Hong Kong from Zhuhai has been effectively contained,” the department said.

According to the Travel Industry Council in Hong Kong, the number of registered tour groups coming over the bridge fell to 340 last weekend from 430 the weekend before.

Hong Kong’s Immigration Department reported that last weekend, 76,473 passengers entered Hong Kong via the bridge, down from 102,749 the weekend before, a 26 per cent drop.

The marketing representatives of two major travel agencies in Guangzhou, Guangzhilv and Nanhu, claimed they were not aware of the latest orders.

On Nanhu’s website, 13 one-day trips to Hong Kong and Macau via the bridge were still available as of Wednesday evening, including weekend trips.

Guangzhilv’s four one-day trips to Hong Kong all depart on weekdays.

Alice Chan Cheung Lok-yee, executive director of Hong Kong’s Travel Industry Council, welcomed the new measures by Guangdong, and said it would make further cuts to the number of one-day tours.

Chan said there was no need to ban all one-day trips if the mainland visitors arrived in properly managed groups led by local tour agents.

She said the council would monitor the situation and stay in touch with the Guangdong authorities.

Tourism sector lawmaker Yiu Si-wing expected Guangdong travel agencies to comply with the orders of their provincial authorities and organise more two-day tours.

This would help relieve pressure on the port-to-port shuttle bus services at the bridge, the border clearance facilities and the local districts that visitors go to, he added.

  • Time for travel agents to embrace “true retail”

Time for travel agents to embrace “true retail”

A recent report by eMarketer predicts that by 2021, Asia Pacific consumers will spend $3.001 trillion online, and ecommerce will make up 25.4% of total retail sales. Whilst this hasn’t been the death knell for bricks and mortar, it has forced retailers to re-think how to use their physical stores.

Apple was one of the first to pioneer using their real estate as a way to drive brand ‘experience’ as much as sales.

With their open-plan design, army of knowledgeable staff and regular, in-store seminars, Apple’s stores inspire and educate customers, helping the company achieve long-term loyalty.

The fashion sector has been quick to follow suit too, adopting a range of technologies to transform how their stores are used by customers – recent innovations include ‘live’ mirrors that suggest matching items as the customer enters the dressing room and geo-targeted apps that alert shoppers to discounts and in-store promotions when they walk past.

By comparison, APAC’s travel agents have been slower to spruce up their bricks and mortar models.

However, with mobile travel sales accounting for 50% of online travel sales, and the number of online travel sales is only set to rise as more digital natives reach adulthood, now is the time for them to start.

Rather than being a burden, when done right this is an opportunity for travel retailers to diversify; improve their success in cross- and up-selling; and engage the next generation of travelers who want very different things from the booking experience than their parents and grandparents.

A good example is global travel group, TUI Travel.

With a third of their sales still taking place in their physical stores, the company noticed that their customers’ purchase journey was becoming increasingly non-linear and multi-channel.

In response, they piloted the use of in-store touch screens in the UK to enhance their customers’ store experience and invested in integrating their physical and digital channels for seamless shopping.

By doing so, they were able to optimize interaction at every touchpoint, resulting in an overall increase in sales and average spend tripling in the stores that introduced interactive technologies.

On the back of this success, they have since rolled these changes out in a number of their other physical stores too.

    Welcome to ‘true retail’

‘True retail’ is the notion of taking a 360-degree view of the customer, thinking beyond just the point of sale to consider all other brand touchpoints – from early inspiration to aftercare – and channels, whether they are in-store, on mobile, online or, as is increasingly the case, a combination of all three.

‘Inspiration’ is one of the biggest, and as yet largely untapped, opportunities for travel retailers to differentiate themselves by setting up their physical stores differently.

Following the Apple model, store design is a good place to start – iPads loaded with relevant travel content, interactive displays and AI technologies can all be used to create a fun environment where customers can browse without sales pressure.

The key is for travel agents to focus on the customer experience first and foremost – to create a space where people actively want to visit as part of their holiday planning.

Automate the predictable to invest in the exceptional

Another big, in-store asset for ‘inspiration’ is a travel agent’s staff.

The more time that they can spend talking to customers, and the more knowledgeable and passionate they are about travel, the better.

Historically in-store staff at travel agents were stuck behind their screens due to cumbersome systems and back-end processes.

However, with the right technology, a lot of this can now be automated, giving staff the information they need at the touch of a button and in turn freeing up their time to walk the floor and focus entirely on customer service.

    Make it multi-channel

Embracing ‘true retail’ also means acknowledging that there is no longer a single, linear purchase journey for travel bookings.

Just as some customers will come into store to make a purchase having already done a lot of research online, others may prefer to get in-store inspiration then buy at a later date, through another channel.

Retail travel agents need to ensure that they don’t lose this second group of shoppers to their competitors by continuing to follow-up with highly-tailored content, to whatever channels the customer prefers, after they’ve left the store.

‘Personalization’ and ‘relevance’ are essential to doing this successfully, so travel agents should use data capture across all of their touchpoints to build up a detailed, single-customer-view that is drawn from real behavioral insights rather than demographic assumptions.

Applied in the right way, this intelligence can also be used to inform more tailored cross- and up-selling, with a much higher chance of conversion.

    Aftercare

Finally, taking a truly 360 view of customer needs means keeping channels of communication open long after the sale itself.

Successful fashion retailers do this well through convenient returns processes on online orders and hyper-relevant ‘you might also be interested in…’ content, designed to inspire the next purchase.

This is an equally important opportunity that travel retailers shouldn’t ignore.

In short, travel agents should have a post-purchase strategy for every customer, the more tailored the better.

For best results, this should go way beyond the immediate post-sale window and should incorporate practical on- and even post-trip value-add services too, such as delay notifications, visa information, and discounts on services at the destination.

Ultimately, traveler expectations are changing, which means retail travel agents today need to think beyond the booking.

This will require a significant mindset shift for some, but also promises big rewards, and future-proofed customer loyalty, for those that get it right.

  • Bentley ‘Be Extraordinary’ tour kicks off in Melbourne

Bentley ‘Be Extraordinary’ tour kicks off in Melbourne

Bentley has kicked off its Be Extraordinary tour in Melbourne, with the brand showcasing four models and a new, more affordable way of entering the Bentley brand.

With plans to expand the tour to include Brisbane, Bathurst, Sydney and Perth, the tour kicked off this week on the banks of the Yarra in Melbourne.

Located just outside Crown Casino, the Bentley marquee includes material samples and showcases iconic parts of Bentley’s history.

The Be Extraordinary tour has also been designed to launch Bentley’s new financial services, which make the ContinentalGT V8 and Flying Spur V8 more accessible to prospective buyers.

Both models now feature an attractive $399,000 drive away price, which can be packaged as part of a financial services product over 60 months, that comes out to $3999 per month.

“We had a look at the content and options that would be fitted to a standard GT V8 as an entry-level model to the brand. There has always been a misconception that Bentleys have been a million-dollar car and inaccessible to people. That’s a problem we’ve been looking to overcome in Australia,” said David Jackson, Bentley’s regional manager for the Asia Pacific region.

    bentley-be-extraordinary-melbourne-4

“We’ve introduced the ‘399 GT V8’, which has the options a customer would want — like the 21-inch alloys and sports exhaust – but you still come in with all taxes paid. That’s 399 on road. What we’re looking to do beyond this is expand the financial services to make the whole range accessible.”

Bentley has four vehicles on display at the Melbourne roadshow, including the Bentayga and Continental GT V8 Convertible, along with two examples of the $399,000 product in the Continental GT V8 and Flying Spur.

“There are a lot of people in different industries in Australia that are booming right now. Australia is a developing market and something like Bentley Financial Services then becomes an option for them. The point of this roadshow is to bring the Bentley brand to life for people,” Jackson said.

“People often don’t know about the Bentley brand and as part of this roadshow we have 21 extraordinary stories here. The point is to explain 21 things you may have never known about Bentley. Such as…James Bond in the Ian Fleming novels never drove an Aston Martin, he drove a Bentley.”

The Melbourne marquee and display will be around until Sunday 27 November, and operates from 11AM to 8PM each day. Residents of Sydney, Brisbane, Bathurst and Perth will also get to experience the roadshow later this year and next year.

“We are going to move this on to Sydney before the end of this year. It will stay there until Bathurst, and after Bathurst we will head to Brisbane, and the Grand Prix next year. Perth will then get it around April next year [2017],” Jackson said.

If you do get down to the display in Melbourne, ask to see the Linley Hamper by Mulliner in the rear of the Bentayga. This incredible picnic package includes a chilled champagne cooler with four crystal flutes.

There’s also storage room for a rug and a full cutlery set. And, at a reasonable $57,808, it seems like a no brainer option for your new Bentley Bentayga SUV.
