    South Korean food and entertainment conglomerate CJ Group has announced it plans to sell its retail bakery franchise Tous Les Jours.

    CJ Group has chosen accounting firm Deloitte Anjin to manage the sale process and at the same time launched a review of options to boost the chain’s competitiveness.

    Tous Les Jours is South Korean’s second-largest bakery chain between its archrival, SPC Group-owned Paris Baguette. Both chains have expanded overseas into markets including Mainland China, Malaysia, and Vietnam, with Paris Baguette’s footprint spreading as far as the US and even its namesake city Paris.

    CJ Group has sent background documents about the business to private-equity companies located domestically and offshore to gauge interest in the business.

    Tous Les Jours operates about 13,000 stores across South Korea.

    Market analysts say that in looking to sell the chain, CJ Group’s CJ Foodville is looking to use the proceeds to expand its food-service business amid the Covid-19 crisis.

    Last year, CJ Foodville sold its coffee chain brand Twosome Place to a Hong Kong-based private-equity fund for US$168.8 million.

    Bakery cafe Tous Les Jours Vietnam has launched a new brand identity at its Hai Ba Trung outlet in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 1.

    Months in preparation, the refreshed store features a cafe-inspired interior and takes its inspiration from the “just baked” concept, reports the Vietnam Economic Times.

    Tous Les Jours (every day) is a South Korean bakery franchise owned by CJ Foodville Corporation in the US. CJ Foodville Vietnam CEO Kim Gun Pyo says more new outlets are planned “in the near future”.

    Korean group CJ Foodville has opened two Tous Les Jours cafes in Chongqing with plans to expand further into China’s inland cities.

    CJ Foodville is running its Tous Les Jours business in China in the form of direct ownership and master franchise. It already has stores in Beijing, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Suzhou, Tianjin and Weihai. It has master franchise chains in 10 provinces plus stores under a master franchise contract in Xinjiang autonomous territory. At the end of December it had a total of 140 stores in China.

    A company official says the aim is to open more than 100 locations in China this year, and more than 1000 by 2020. “With the opening of the Chongqing location, we are set to move into the western part of China.”

    Korean bakery Tous les Jours has opened its first stores in Mongolia as it broadens its Asian footprint.

    Two Tous les Jours Mongolia shops have opened in Ulaanbaatar in what the company sees as another step in its plan to become a global bakery brand.

    Besides Mongolia, the brand’s parent CJ Foodville has 270 Tous les Jours stores in seven countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, the US and Vietnam.

    It is the first international bakery to open in Mongolia, where K-pop has amassed a considerable following, raising the profile and acceptance of Korean brands in general – especially music, food and fashion.

    A local master franchise has been appointed to lead the brand’s roll-out

    The Korea Times reports that the company’s first Mongolian store in downtown Ulaanbaatar opened on October 31, drawing more than 2000 customers and generating over US$8600 in sales.

    A CJ Foodville spokesman said Tous les Jours opened its second shop at the Shangri-La Mall this week, attracting twice the number of customers it expected.

    South Korean food-to-entertainment conglomerate CJ Group has submitted a letter of intent to buy fast-food chain McDonald’s Korea.

    Details have yet to be decided, but the deal could be worth 300 billion won ($256.86 million) to 500 billion won, says the Korean Economic Daily newspaper, quoting investment banking sources.

    McDonald’s Corp headquarters in the US announced in March it was reorganising its business in Asia by bringing in partners to own the restaurants within a franchise framework.

    Describing its aim to be a global lifestyle company, CJ Group aims to provide healthy, happy and convenient lifestyles based on its four core businesses: food and food services, bio and pharmaceuticals, entertainment and media, and home shopping and logistics.
