    Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is gearing up to bolster its network with plans to deploy an additional 100,000 4G towers across India. This initiative follows the successful installation of nearly 100,000 towers, marking a significant step in their ongoing infrastructure expansion.

    Government Approval on the Horizon

    Union Minister of State for Communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, expressed optimism about the upcoming proposal: “After successfully installing 100,000 towers with optimal 4G equipment, we will approach the Cabinet and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to approve another 100,000 towers.” He also highlighted the plan to enhance BSNL’s cash flow, which would facilitate the installation of more 4G and 5G equipment and enable the monetization of BSNL’s assets.

    Strategic Partnerships for Growth

    BSNL’s ambitious journey took a significant turn in May 2023, when it awarded a major contract to a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). This partnership also includes Tejas Networks, the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), and ITI Ltd., covering the supply of 4G equipment for the new 100,000 towers, along with necessary network components and a 10-year maintenance contract.

    Pemmasani acknowledged initial equipment challenges but noted substantial improvements: “There were some problems with the equipment in the beginning. But now, it’s functioning well. We expect it to operate near perfection by the end of July or August next year.” He also emphasized the technological lead enjoyed by global telecom firms like Nokia and Ericsson, whose legacy spans decades, compared to India’s homegrown solutions that are still in their infancy.

    Stiff Competition and Future Plans

    BSNL currently faces tough competition; with its limited 4G infrastructure, retaining customers has been a challenge. Pemmasani pointed out, “One major limitation is that we currently have only 100,000 4G towers. In comparison, Reliance Jio and Airtel each have more than 500,000 towers.” However, he is confident that as the 4G rollout progresses, customer retention will improve significantly.

    Looking ahead, BSNL plans to launch its 5G network by June 2025. Telecom Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia confirmed that the transition to 5G will only occur once the 4G network stabilizes and meets quality standards: “Once the 100,000 towers are up and the network is stabilized, and once we see that the QoS is up to the mark, then we can start switching.”

    Homegrown Technology Takes the Lead

    In a bold move, the Indian government has ruled out foreign involvement in BSNL’s 5G deployment, insisting on the use of domestically developed technology. BSNL aims to roll out 5G standalone services using the 900 MHz and 3.3 GHz spectrum bands, starting with an initial target of 100,000 subscribers.     Ooredoo Group Announces USD750 million Deal for Sale of More Than 4,200 Telecoms Towers in Indonesia

    Ooredoo  today announced that its Indonesian operating company, PT Indosat Tbk. (“Indosat Ooredoo”), has signed a sale and leaseback agreement with PT EPID Menara AssetCo (“Edge Point Indonesia”) for more than 4,200 telecommunications towers.

    PT EPID Menara AssetCo is an Indonesian subsidiary of Edge Point Singapore, which is wholly owned by Digital Colony, a leading global digital infrastructure investor with extensive experience owning and operating cellular towers.

    Indosat Ooredoo has agreed to sell this portfolio of towers in a transaction valued at USD 750 million, including a supplementary offer, making it one of the largest deals of its kind in Asia. The sale will unlock capital to create value for shareholders and continue to build Indosat Ooredoo’s strong growth momentum through improvements to network performance and the launch of innovative new digital solutions to enhance the customer experience.

    The sale is part of Ooredoo Group’s strategy to move to a more efficient and flexible asset light model and unlock the trapped value of its infrastructure portfolio. Prior to this deal, Ooredoo had a global portfolio of approximately 27,000 owned towers, representing an infrastructure portfolio of significant value for the Group. Monetising these assets to create more value for both shareholders and customers is a key focus of Ooredoo’s current strategy.

    Edge Point Indonesia was declared the winning bidder of a competitive tender process conducted by Indosat Ooredoo. The transaction is expected to close in Q2 2021 subject to customary conditions, including shareholder approval by Indosat Ooredoo at an EGM, which is planned to be held on May 6th. Indosat Ooredoo will lease back space on the towers for a period of 10-years to meet its ongoing requirements.

    Here is where cities worldwide are hiding 5G towers

    If you’re driving through some cities in Arizona, you might have noticed some large cactuses (or cacti) approximately 2-feet tall, along the sides of the road. But these are not real plants. They were constructed in order to cover up 4G LTE antennas; inside the fake cactuses you’ll find radio equipment. The idea is to make the gear blend in by disguising them with regionally-based plants and structures. Many think that cell towers look ugly and ruin the look of the environment (frankly, yours truly likes the look of cell towers but that puts me in the minority).

    4G towers are disguised as palm trees down south, evergreens in the Northeast, and cactuses in the West. Some 4G sites are disguised as church bell towers, historic landmarks, and water towers. CNN says that with the use of 5G towers, cities have to find another method of subterfuge. That’s because high-band mmWave 5G signals, as you’ve often seen us write, are easily blocked by structures. Wooden objects, certain materials, and yes-even leaves (T-Mobile wasn’t kidding) can block the progress of high-band mmWave 5G signals. And since high-band 5G signals can only travel short distances (something else we’ve mentioned often), 5G towers must be placed a couple hundred feet apart and even closer. And the antennas have to be exposed for 5G signals to be accessed by the public. With this in mind, some of the illusions used, like the cactuses, won’t be as effective. So for 5G sites, some cities are hiding the gear in street lights. Keith Niederer, telecom policy coordinator for Scottsdale says, “Design will be just as important moving forward with the 5G installations, but we will have a greater focus on street lights than the cacti. In Scottsdale, aesthetics are pretty important. Every street has a different theme and streetlights vary. We want them to blend in as much as possible and not stand out.” With 5G, the technology needs to be out in the open as opposed to 4G LTE.

    A company named Valmont Industries is one of the leading firms in the business of hiding 4G and 5G equipment. It recently finished delivering street lights to San Antonia, Texas that contain 5G gear. The outfit’s general manager of communication concealment, Mark Schmidt, said, “There’s no form factor we won’t consider using. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the aesthetics in a community, what a jurisdiction would like to see and what the wireless carrier requires as a form factor. … But the most natural fit here will be traffic lights and street lights.” With street lights sporting access to a power supply, and with a decent elevation, they can be used to house multiple technologies. Besides trying to hide the looks of a 5G tower, there is a security factor as well. You might recall that last April, thugs believing a conspiracy theory that 5G towers were the cause of coronavirus tried to knock down these towers in the U.K. and China.

    Tom Kuklo, a global product manager for Radio Frequency Systems (RFS), a firm that makes components for smart street lights, says that these lights are already rolling out in some areas. He states, “We’re already seeing this in China and some other locations where smart poles are very predominant. They’re becoming part of the landscaping; you walk right past them and don’t even know that’s what’s giving you a 5G signal unless you’re looking for it.”

    5G is expected to bring $17 trillion to economic growth by 2035 based on data from ABI Research. Eventually, data speeds will be 10 to 100 times 4G data speeds bringing a number of new technologies like self-driving cars to the public. Remote operations performed with the surgeon hundreds of miles away from the patient will be performed. Right now though, we are very early in the 5G era and many more towers need to be constructed throughout the world.

    Bharti Infratel-Indus Towers merger due to close in June

    The mega-merger between Indian operator Bharti Airtel’s infrastructure company Bharti Infratel and independent tower company Indus Towers is reportedly now expected to close in June.

    The planned merger, which has been in the making for around a year, is at an advanced stage of completion, according to the prospective parent companies of the merged company Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Group.

    In a stock exchange filing, the companies also announced that they have proposed to appoint current Indus Towers CEO Bimal Dayal and CFO Hemant Ruia to the posts of CEO and CFO respectively of the combined company.

    Merging Bharti Infratel with Indus Towers will create a pan-India tower company with over 163,000 towers in operation and a valuation of around $10 billion.

    The combined company will continue to serve Indian operators on a non-discriminatory basis and help support the expansion of 4G and 5G wireless broadband services across India.

    Indus Towers was established in 2007 as a joint venture between Bharti Airtel and what is now Vodafone Idea. Prior to the in-progress merger, the company was around 53% owned by Vodafone Idea, 42% owned by Bharti Infratel and 5% owned by Providence Equity Partners.

    “The Shareholder groups look forward to early completion of the merger and move towards successful integration,” the joint statement reads.

    India’s Supreme Court holds tower removal order

    India’s Supreme Court has put a hold on a state government order to remove all mobile towers from within 500 meters of jails across Rajasthan after a challenge from mobile operators.

    The Cellular Operators’ Association of India (COAI), the main industry body for India’s mobile sector, is seeking to have the order overturned on the grounds that it would affect around 8 million people an have a cascading effect on the sector.

    The order from the Rajasthan government, issued on April 6, demanded all operators remove their towers from within the vicinity of jails by early June.

    In order to comply with the order, operators would have to remove a total of 400 towers, including base station controller sites catering to a further 2,500 base stations.

    In the court challenge, COAI has argued that even the national Department of Telecommunications has supported operators’ position that they should not have to remove the towers.

    A policy passed earlier this year permits setting up cell towers within 500 meters of jails, hospitals, schools and other public or private locations, the report notes. But this policy has since been amended to stipulate that construction of towers in the vicinity of these locations can be blocked by a court order.

    COAI is seeking a declaration that operators should not have to follow the order, and that the state government should not be allowed to penalize them for non-compliance.
