Thai cafe serves up crypto advice with coffee and cake

A cafe in northeast Thailand has become home to cryptocurrency traders, adding banks of screens showing the latest market moves and dishing out investment advice alongside coffee and cake.

Behind a calm exterior of cherry blossom trees, customers of HIP Coffee & Restaurant stare at their laptops, supping nervously on iced coffee – part of a surging interest in digital assets in Thailand that has regulators worried.

“It’s exciting for me to be here because I get to meet people who share the same interests,” said Detnarong Satianphut, a 35-year-old crypto trader.

“We traders get to exchange information because in the trading world we are coming up against millions of people.”

Cryptocurrencies have been gaining momentum in Thailand, with as much as 251 billion baht (US$7.62 billion) in digital asset traded in November, according to the latest official data.

Earlier this month, Thailand said it would start to regulate the use of digital assets as payments, warning of potential risks to financial stability and the overall economic system.

HIP cafe, which has been around since 2013, got its crypto makeover in 2020.

Since then, according to staff, its customers have doubled. Manager Oakkharawat Yongsakuljinda said the cafe provides alternative investment opportunities for people in the surrounding Nakhon Ratchasima province.

It offers free investment consulting and is planning on starting its own cryptocurrency coin.

Its customers say trading in the cafe offers them the best chance of success in a volatile market, in which the most well-known cryptocurrency, bitcoin, hit six-month lows this week.

“Having so many screens helps a lot … We immediately know and get to analyze crashing factors and whether we should buy,” said 23-year-old trader Apakon Putnok.

  • 500 Startups funds Stockbit, a social network for stock trading

500 Startups funds Stockbit, a social network for stock trading

Indonesia’s Stockbit bills itself a “social network for stock traders.” Individual traders sign up for customizable stock market information and analytics. Basic features are free, while paying subscribers get more in-depth intelligence.

The site’s been growing and adding features since 2012. The company just closed an investment from 500 Startups, it said in a release today. It’s a pre-series A round, and the sum is undisclosed.

The new investment is supposed to fuel the launch of a new a feature that lets community members follow more experienced stock traders and copy their investment moves in an automated process.

“Our proposition is simple. Just copy, let the best do the rest,” is how CEO Wellson Lo explains the feature. You can allocate a fixed amount, say US$5,000, and this amount will be invested by mirroring the person you are following. Trading “leaders,” as the people you can follow are called, also benefit. They get a share of the profits you make.

It’s been in development since last year and will become available on Stockbit’s iOS and Android apps soon, though there’s no set launch date yet.

Public participation in the stock market is extremely underrepresented in Indonesia, argues Wellson. Less than 0.3 percent of the adult population have a stock trading account. In Singapore, it’s 39 percent and more than 20 percent in China.

Part of the reason is a knowledge gap, which Stockbit hopes to address by making it simple for novice traders to learn and reap benefits without risking too much.

Back in 2015, after Stockbit last raised funds, including from local VC firm Ideosource, Wellson had told Retail News that the startup had 15,000 registered users, while paid subscribers were still only in the hundreds. The user base has about tripled since then, according to Stockbit.

There’s an ongoing effort by the Indonesian Financial Services Authority to raise awareness about investment opportunities on Indonesia’s public markets, a development Stockbit hopes to be able to leverage for its growth.

500 Startups partner Vishal Harnal says Stockbit is already the largest and most active community of stock traders in the country, which gives the startup an advantage over potential competition.

Besides Stockbit, there are trading information sites like Idsaham or Infovesta, but those sites merely aggregate stock information and don’t yet offer analytics tools. Bareksa can be seen as a possible competitor, as it offers a variety of financial analytics tools and also aggregates information about the Indonesian Stock Exchange, among other functions.

Algomerchant from Singapore has a similar solution, offering a mix of social networking and analytics. However, Algomerchant lets you subscribe to a set of trading algorithms, not individual people, explains Wellson. Stockbit’s social trading model is most comparable to Covestor in the US.

  • Korean anti-corruption law impacts on retail sales

Korean anti-corruption law impacts on retail sales

The Korean anti-corruption law may be showing its desired extra effect of creating more time for family and home cooking if sales record at a leading retailer is any indication.

October sales figures from E-mart released show an 11.5 per cent increase for the month to 1.14 trillion won (US$987.3 billion) compared to a year ago. Discount chain E-mart marked a 7.6 per cent jump while the retailer’s warehouse outlet Traders made a 43.7 percent leap. The online store E-mart Mall showed a 28.3 percent increase.

The retailer had recorded a 6.1 per cent sales increase for the third quarter.

Company officials said the Korean anti-corruption law that took effect on September 28 likely boosted the sales. The law sets limit to the price of gifts and paid meals that can be provided to public employees, school teachers and journalists. People who may serve one’s interests are also restricted by the price limit.

Advocates of the law, still under controversy for restricting even gifts of good will and intent, had argued that the law will free individuals from business-related dinners and engagements, giving them personal evening time.

“People leaving office on time and shopping for groceries, all due to the anti-corruption law, appear to have contributed largely to the double-digit growth in E-mart’s sales,” Lee Joon-ki of Mirae Asset Daewoo said.

Food sales at E-mart rose 13.1 per cent in the month from a year ago, outdoing the average sales increase. In a breakdown, sales of fresh foods jumped 14.1 per cent while ready-made meals increased 14.5 per cent. Sales of processed foods were up 11.2 per cent.

The number of customers coming in from 6pm had also increased, according to E-mart. The retailer had 3.5 per cent more shoppers since the day of the law’s enactment to November 8. The number of customers in the 6-9 pm period was up 5.3 percent.

“We are focusing our marketing on foods section for our 23rd anniversary event since food sales are improving,” Choi Hoon-hak, marketing team chief at E-mart, said. “We intend to continue to introduce a variety of products that fit into the lifestyle changes of the customers.”
