    Carrefour to open 300 mini stores in Indonesia

    Carrefour Indonesia has sealed a deal with the nation’s Mosque Council (Dewan Masjid Indonesia, DMI) to open up to 300 mini supermarkets.

    The stores will be built in mosque districts by Carrefour’s local entity Trans Retail Indonesia and range in size between 10sqm and 250sqm.

    According to Salaam Gateway, the company is working with the national mosque body to select districts for stores in cities including Jakarta, Sukabumi, Bandung, Bekasi, and Depok, as well as in provincial centres such as Riau, Padang, Lombok, and Makassar.

    VP for corporate communications with Trans Retail, Satria Hamid, says a memorandum of understanding has been signed with DMI “and we agreed on three points: boost human capital skills in retail management, grow the number of entrepreneurs from mosque districts, and increase the purchasing power of this captive market.”

    Profits will be shared equally.

    The retail infrastructure and store operations will be overseen by DMI and Trans Retail will supply products as well as providing technical assistance, training, and support on merchandising, safety, hygiene and other operational factors.

    The new Carrefour Indonesia stores will compete with Alfamart convenience stores.

    Trans Retail operates 112 Carrefour hypermarkets and supermarkets across Indonesia under the umbrella of four brands: Carrefour, Transmart Carrefour, Transmart, and Groserindo Carrefour.

    Trans Retail’s parent CT Corp acquired 100 per cent of Carrefour Indonesia from Carrefour France in late 2012.

    Despite a rugged first half, property development and investment group Metro Holdings has still managed positive results and has formed strategic partnerships in Indonesia.

    It had a net profit after tax of S$4.6 million (US$3.3 million) despite a net loss after tax of $13.6 million as the result of events not related to its retail developments.

    Meanwhile, it is moving ahead with a IDR1.99 trillion (US$147.2 million) mixed project in Bekasi, Jakarta. For the retail component it is partnering with Trans Corp, while Lee Kim Tah Group will handle the residential side.

    Trans Corp will develop its trademark Transmart mall with a gross floor area of about 30,485sqm, including department stores, supermarkets and cinemas, as well as a theme park in conjunction with Kidcity and Snow Town.

    Metro chairman Winston Choo says the group has worked with Trans Corp since it took an initial stake in Metro Indonesia in 2008 to run Metro’s retail department store business.

    Metro’s retail arm runs three Metro department stores in Singapore and another nine in Indonesia.

    Major retailer Trans Retail Indonesia will open dozens of new stores this year in a bid to attract more visits to its physical stores despite the booming online retail industry.

    “We will open 30 new stores under the Transmart Carrefour brand in 2017,” Transmart Carrefour corporate communications general manager Satria Hamid told on Friday. However, he declined to mention the amount of capital expenditure (capex) that the firm had earmarked to support the expansion.

    Despite Indonesia’s surging domestic retail business, Trans Retail Indonesia, part of business tycoon Chairul Tanjung’s CT Corp business group, has decided to step up to the challenge posed by the burgeoning online retail business.

    The retailer says it is determined to be more creative by way of promotional activities, intensive marketing and sales of fresh products to lure customers to its stores.

    “We will refresh several stores with a new concept,” Satria said, in reference to a combination of retail and culinary experience, department stores and child play areas.

    Currently, the company operates 94 Carrefour stores nationwide, of which 15 stock the Transmart Carrefour brand and the remainder will gradually follow suit.
