Google Photos Upgrade: New Toggle Empowers User Control over Fast or Intelligent Searches

In response to user feedback, Google has announced modifications to the Google Photos app, providing users with greater control over their search results. Users can now opt between the traditional ‘fast search’ function and the more advanced ‘Ask Photos’ results. To facilitate this choice, a new toggle feature has been incorporated into the Google Photos app, allowing users to effortlessly switch between the two options.

    Enhanced Search Options

Fast Search, also known as ‘Classic Search,’ employs a keyword-based tool, providing users with instant responses. Google cites this search mode as the optimal choice for straightforward inquiries such as “beach 2022” or “cat photos.”

On the other hand, the ‘Intelligent mode’ or ‘Ask Photos’ utilizes the more advanced Gemini 3 AI models. This makes it a powerful search option, albeit slower than Classic Search, as the models must analyse your entire photo library. This search mode is more suitable for complex queries such as “Show me the day we brought our puppy home” or “What was the name of that street in Manhattan we walked across after the blizzard in New York?”

Google assures that it will provide results using the search method most suitable for your specific query. However, the new toggle feature allows users to switch views at will, ensuring they receive the desired search results. The Google Photos app, available on both Android and iOS, will soon include this new toggle feature.

    Recognizing the Toggle Feature

The new toggle feature can be easily identified on the left side of the display, just under the “Back” arrow. When Classic Search is active, the toggle is off and the AI Mode icon (depicted as a magnifying glass with a Gemini spark) appears in white on a gray button. Conversely, when the Ask Photos function is activated, the toggle is white, with the AI Mode icon appearing in blue on a button encased in a blue pill.

  • Meta’s AI Chatbot: Revolutionizing Ad Targeting with User Conversations

Meta’s AI Chatbot: Revolutionizing Ad Targeting with User Conversations

Meta, the technology powerhouse, has revealed a major transformation in its advertising approach, indicating that it plans to utilize user engagement with its Meta AI chatbot to improve the accuracy and customization of its ad targeting. The objective of this initiative is to augment the company’s efficiency in marketing products and services to its extensive user community.

Meta pointed out that user dialogues and input within the Meta AI environment will form a novel and potent data source for its advertising platform. This policy is set to be officially implemented on December 16.

Meta already utilizes complex tactics—including the examination of posts, analysis of click history, and understanding of network relationships throughout its social media ecosystem—to deduce consumer interest. However, the discussions with the Meta AI chatbot provide a level of direct, explicit data that simply has no match.

Users could voluntarily reveal information about specific items they are actively seeking, travel arrangements they are planning, or personal problems that a product being advertised could conceivably resolve. This direct intent is significantly more valuable than the inferred data, allowing Meta to construct highly personalized ad profiles.

Apart from advertising, the data gathered from interactions with Meta AI will also be employed to fine-tune and personalize the content feed that users view across Meta’s diverse platforms. This strengthens the chatbot’s position as a crucial instrument in shaping the overall user experience and commercial strategy.

  • Revolutionizing User Interaction: Google Messages Gears Up for Context-Dependent Menus

Revolutionizing User Interaction: Google Messages Gears Up for Context-Dependent Menus

In 2009, the HTC HD2 was launched with a 4.3-inch display, which at the time was considered to be the maximum size for a smartphone screen. The HD2 was powered by the Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and was applauded for its visually-appealing home screen. For its time, the 4.3-inch screen was considered enormous, with many analysts predicting that smartphone displays would not get any larger.

    Rise of the Phablet

However, by 2011, Samsung shattered this belief with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy Note. The device was equipped with a 5.3-inch screen, effectively creating a new category of phones known as “phablets”. The term phablet, a portmanteau of phone and tablet, was coined to describe these larger devices. As the size of Android screens continued to grow, it became increasingly challenging to operate certain apps single-handedly due to the positioning of the app’s elements on a larger screen. Google Messages is one such app.

    The Problem with Large Screens

Operating these larger phones with one hand can be a struggle, unless, perhaps, one has hands as large as those of NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal. In particular, reaching the hamburger menu in the upper right corner of the screen can be quite a stretch. This inconvenient design left many users at risk of straining their hands.

    A New Solution from Google

In response, Google seems to be ready to replace the hamburger menu on Google Messages with a more user-friendly context menu. This new feature will allow users to access any critical aspect of the app from anywhere in the chat. At present, users must reach the top of the screen to access essential buttons, such as the delete button, by long-pressing a message.

With the proposed change, a long press on an open chat will show reactions, and tapping the hamburger icon will provide access to options such as Reply, Share, Forward, and View Details. Furthermore, the context menu will dynamically adjust depending on the selected message.

    Enhanced User Experience

The positioning of these options right under the chat will make it easier for users to select an option without needing to stretch their fingers too far. The new user interface will also make it clearer which chats have been selected. When multiple messages are chosen, a checkmark will appear on the selected messages, simplifying the selection and deselection process.

Rising active customer count gives Vipshop good impact

Chinese online discounter VIPShop is reaping the benefits of a 13 per cent increase in active customers last quarter to 32.4 million – well ahead of the 5 per cent full-year improvement. Its annual results released overnight showed net revenue soared 15.9 per cent last year to RMB84.5 billion (US$12.3 billion) and net income attributable to shareholders rose 9.2 per cent to RMB2.1 billion ($309.6 million). VIPShop says its Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV) for the full year rose 21 per cent to RMB131.0 billion.

“We are pleased to have finished the fourth quarter of 2018 with solid operational results,” said chairman and CEO Eric Shen.

“Going forward, we will continue to strengthen our core capabilities, aiming to bring highly desirable selections of products to our valued customers on a daily basis, which will drive our long-term growth and profitability.”

CFO Donghao Yang said the fourth quarter saw “a healthy sequential recovery” of VIPShop’s bottom-line, which was mostly attributable to a focus on the highly profitable apparel category.

“During this quarter, we began to shift some low-margin categories from our first-party business into the marketplace platform, reducing their drag on our bottom-line while still delivering a solid GMV growth of 15 per cent year over year. We remain focused on stabilising our margins, aiming to drive enhanced shareholder return in the long run.”

During the fourth quarter of last year, VIPShop added about 86,000sqm of warehousing space, taking its capacity to 3 million sqm.

For the first quarter of the new year, the company expects net revenue to grow by up to 5 per cent, to between RMB19.9 billion and RMB20.9 billion.

  • Netflix streams its way into Korean hearts

Netflix streams its way into Korean hearts

Netflix viewership is growing faster than ever in Korea. According to mobile app tracker WiseApp on Tuesday, 1.27 million Android users in Korea used the Netflix app in December last year. That’s nearly four times, or 274 percent, more than the beginning of the year, when just 340,000 Android users had used the app in January 2018. Nearly half, or 41 percent, of Netflix users were in their 20s.

WiseApp estimated that there are around 900,000 paying Netflix users across all devices in Korea who spend a monthly 11.7 billion won ($10.5 million) combined on the platform.

Netflix users are allowed to share their account with family members and friends, so the number of paying customers is always lower than the number of users. Netflix also offers a one-month free trial, giving first-time users unlimited access to the platform for a limited time.

Onlookers have suggested a variety of possible explanations for Netflix’s growing success in Korea and the rest of the world.

Park Yong-hu, an IT expert who has previously worked for Kakao and Baedal Minjok operator Woowa Brothers, believes the absence of advertisements allows Netflix original content creators greater freedom to come up with fresh and innovative material.

“Platforms that host advertisements often run into the problem of whether to prioritize users or advertisers first,” said Park. “For companies like Netflix, however, where the client and user are the same, they have the advantage of being able to clarify their vision.”

Netflix confirmed that it doesn’t try to limit creators.

“Netflix never requests creators change their stories,” added a spokesperson from Netflix in Korea. “Creators are guaranteed that they will create the content they want and Netflix just helps to realize their dream.”

Convenience is another feature winning over users.

From smart TVs to tablets, there are over 1,500 different types of smart devices that Netflix currently supports. The 14,500 won premium subscription option in Korea allows up to four people to use the platform at the same time, even in 4K ultra-high definition.

With Netflix’s Smart Downloads, users don’t even have to bother downloading shows themselves. The smart feature automatically deletes an episode a user has finished watching and downloads the next one.

Netflix’s recommendation system also attempts to offer users enough content that fits their preference so that they keep using the service.

“Netflix does not gather user data by categorizing them into groups like ‘a male bachelor in his thirties living in Seoul,’ but we instead [suggest shows] by looking at the types of content that they have watched and the reviews they have left,” said a Netflix spokesperson.

Netflix’s vast potential was most recently demonstrated by the tremendous success of its original film “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock. In a move untypical for the company, Netflix took to Twitter to reveal that 45 million users worldwide had streamed the post-apocalyptic hit within its first week of release last month.

This year, the streaming platform is ambitiously trying to make its debut in the Korean drama scene. It has already confirmed the launch of several original Korean drama series with genres ranging from teen-romance to zombie-thriller, and started strong with the release of “Kingdom” last week, starring famous actors including Bae Doo-na of “Cloud Atlas.”

Some believe it will be just a matter of time before Netflix becomes a force to be reckoned with in the domestic drama industry.

“The threat Netflix is posing to Hollywood means that even production and distribution of video content cannot escape the currents of the fourth industrial revolution,” said Park.

  • More Chinese seniors embrace WeChat

    More Chinese seniors embrace WeChat

The ubiquitous WeChat is continuing to expand its reach across all age groups – especially among people aged 55 and above. According to the 2018 WeChat Data Report released at the WeChat Open Class Pro 2019 event in Guangzhou this week, seniors recorded the fastest growth of any age group last year. WeChat says more people are sharing more content on the platform: users are sending more messages, making more voice and video calls, and posting more frequently on their WeChat Moments timelines.

Figures for September show WeChat had 1.082 billion monthly active users and 45 billion messages were sent daily on the app, up 18 per cent on the previous year. The number of calls daily – 410 million – was double the previous year’s number. From 2015 to last year, the volume of text messages rose 110 per cent, voice messages rose 212 per cent, image volume by 255 per cent and videos by a massive 1900 per cent.

WeChat Pay is taking an increasing share of payments at retailers, with monthly transactions up 150 per cent in September, compared with the previous year. Transactions by consumers aged 55 and above in department stores rose by 320 per cent year on year.

More people are using WeChat for work and more businesses are using WeChat to connect with customers and staff, according to the report.

The company said WeChat Mini Programs, launched two years ago, has been widely adopted by users and businesses with more than 600 million people using Mini Programs at least once a week on services or products from more than 200 industry segments. The number of transactions (by volume) increased sixfold last year.

In a statement, WeChat said it would continue to create more advanced tools, open APIs and enhanced cloud services so developers can help businesses build Mini Programs more efficiently.

During the past year, WeChat has introduced features such as Scan-to-Buy enabling users to pay without queueing at cashiers and Smart Recommendations based on users’ past purchases to help merchants increase conversion and operational efficiency, grow their membership programs, reduce manpower costs and deliver more personalised services to customers.

The WeChat Open Class Pro event is for merchants and developers. The photos accompanying this story are from the event.

  • KT subscribers jump ship after fire accident

KT subscribers jump ship after fire accident

KT’s week has taken yet another turn for the worse as the fire that caused major telecommunications disruptions in Seoul and the surrounding area has likely left the company with a hefty compensation bill and subscribers looking to take their business elsewhere.

According to data from the Korea Telecommunications Operators Association on Tuesday, the number of KT’s mobile service subscribers has been shrinking since a fire broke out at the carrier’s Ahyeon telecommunications switching center in Seodaemun District, western Seoul, on Saturday.

On Saturday, the total number of subscribers to the country’s second-largest mobile carrier fell by 828 people compared to the previous day. This means that the number of people that left KT was larger than those who newly subscribed to the carrier that day.

On the contrary, subscribers to SK Telecom increased by 246 people and LG U+ 582 people on the day of the accident.

On Monday, the number of KT subscribers again dropped by 678 people. During the two operating days, KT lost a net 1,506 subscribers.

Before the accident, the number of KT subscribers was on the rise. On Thursday, KT’s pool of subscribers increased by 69 people and by 83 people on Friday, but that trend was reversed after the fire.

The troubled company said most fire-affected services have returned to normal on Tuesday, but analyst Kim Hyun-yong from eBest Investment & Securities said, “KT’s sales and brand image can be damaged if the situation is not fixed quickly considering the long hours and broad scope of disruptions [caused by the accident,]” in a report.

SK Telecom also suffered from problems in its mobile communications services in April and LG U+ last year, but disruptions were resolved in a matter of hours, not days.

Analysts estimate KT will have to spend at least 23.2 billion won ($20.5 million) in compensation to individual customers as it decided to waive a month’s phone bill for KT subscribers residing in the affected regions. The amount is roughly 1.6 percent of KT’s projected operating profit for this year according to Yang Jong-in, a research fellow from Korea Investment & Securities, Tuesday.

“We made our assumptions based on KT’s market share in the five affected districts in Seoul,” Yang said.

Another analyst Kim Joon-sop from KB Securities estimated the amount of compensation to be larger, at around 31.7 billion won.

As compensation plans for the business losses of small and microbusiness operators have not yet been laid out by the mobile carrier, the amount of compensation could snowball.

The accident comes at a tragic time for KT, as it was just a week before the carrier expected to introduce its first 5G network-based services. Korean carriers have been preparing to launch their first 5G services in dongle-type devices from December and had scheduled large press briefings this week prior to the official launch.

KT has now delayed its event. On Monday, the mobile carrier sent notices saying “we decided to cancel our scheduled event to quickly fix telecommunications disruptions caused by the fire,” to reporters.

The 5G network has been KT’s key focus and Chairman Hwang Chang-gyu had promised in September to invest a whopping 9.6 trillion won into its 5G business over the next five years. The company had also cemented its image as a leading 5G service provider by serving as the official telecommunications partner at the PyeongChang Winter Olympic Games earlier this year.

The latest incident, however, has hampered KT’s latest bid to take a bigger share of the local telecommunications market, which has been in a similar shape for the last decade: SK Telecom taking 50 percent, followed by KT with 30 percent and LG U+ 20 percent.

“SK Telecom, which boasts a well-established image of offering quality mobile services, and LG U+, which bets on cost-effective services, are likely to take advantage of the latest accident,” an industry insider said.

Still, KT is trying its best to restore the disrupted network.

According to KT, 96 percent of its mobile communications service has been restored, while 99 percent of landline internet and 92 percent of fixed-line phone services are repaired as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.

KT said microbusiness operators still suffering from telecommunications disruptions are those that depend on copper cables rather than more modernized fiber optic cables. While 99 percent of fiber optic cable-based landline phone services are back to normal, only 10 percent of the copper cable-based services have been restored.

“Copper cables are heavy and thick so they cannot be taken out through manholes for restoration,” KT said in statement. “They can only be recovered after our people are allowed into the tunnel where the fire broke out.”

To minimize damage to copper-cable users, KT said it will offer 1,500 wireless LTE routers to shop operators so they can use electronic card payment systems. KT is also offering 300 wireless payment devices to convenience stores after discussions with the various franchise headquarters. The carrier has also been rushing to convert copper cables to fiber optic ones in areas with a large number of shops since Monday.

From the government’s side, the Ministry of Science and ICT created a task force on Tuesday consisting of related government officials and representatives from mobile carriers to discuss how to manage low-level telecommunications facilities like the Ahyeon facility, which was graded D in terms of importance.
