Waze launches Cupid-themed driving experience just in time for Valentine’s Day

Waze is not missing any chance of bringing new driving experiences to its users, so it’s no wonder that this time of the year we’re getting a Valentine’s Day-themed voice pack to guide us in our travels. Earlier today, Waze revealed that a new Cupid driving experience will be available everywhere in the world.

We’re not sure who’s supposed to impersonate Cupid but installing the new driving experience implies that you’ll be hearing his words of wisdom. Waze is also “warning” users that Cupid might have some hot takes “on the state of dating and love in 2022,” so if you’re not ready for some dad jokes, you better skip this one (unless Waze has something else in mind).

Just so you know, the pack will include Cupid’s voice, which can be paired with the limited edition Lovewagon and a Cupid Mood, if you really want to get into the Valentine’s Day mood.

Of course, the Cupid driving experience will only be available to download for a limited time, but once installed, it’s yours to keep forever. It’s only available in English, but even if you don’t understand the language, I see no reason not to go full Valentine’s Day mode if you love the celebration of romance and love.

  • Apple to celebrate Valentine’s Day with new health features

Apple to celebrate Valentine’s Day with new health features

Valentine’s Day may be on February 14th, but American Heart Month is set to last the entire month—and Apple is greeting it with a few aces up its sleeve.

Needless to say, all of Apple’s Heart Month specials are health-related, and the Apple Watch in particular is getting a few new limited-time features to encourage users to get up and moving—all with the goal of having a healthier body and mind.

For starters, if you complete Apple’s new Health Month Activity Challenge on Valentine’s Day, you will win a custom iMessage sticker coupled with an exclusive award. The challenge isn’t daunting by any means; it’s just 30 minutes of exercise to complete Apple’s activity ring that wins you these prizes.

Apart from that, all month long, Apple will be including a special featured set of 30-minute workouts on Apple Fitness+. The “Time to Walk” experience, which was unveiled at around the same time last year, is receiving a new episode featuring Georges St-Pierre, a former Canadian mixed martial arts champion.

To make use of these additions, you’d need an Apple+ membership—which comes with a free trial for three months, then costs $9.99 a month afterward.

“We’re strong believers at Apple that if you can empower people with information about their health, you can change the trajectory of their well-being,” stated Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer.

“Keeping your heart healthy requires a holistic approach — something we’ve focused on since the first generation of Apple Watch with the inclusion of activity and workout apps, in addition to heart rate. Today, people of all ages can use our products and services to learn more about staying healthy, work toward their personal goals, and have a lot of fun along the way.”

Along with the Apple Watch-exclusive features, Apple is also going to be offering new custom compilations across Apple Fitness+, the App Store, Apple TV, Apple Podcasts, and Apple Books, according to Apple’s newsroom post.

You’ve got to give it to Apple for giving users’ health some extra attention this month; both physical and mental health have been difficult to maintain in light of recent events, and this may just make things just a tad easier.

  • Little romance likely for China retailers on Valentine’s Day

Little romance likely for China retailers on Valentine’s Day

The coronavirus outbreak is set to rob retailers of all the romance on Valentine’s Day tomorrow according to analysts from OC&C Strategy Consulting.

Pascal Martin and Veronica Wang, partners at OC&C, say the outbreak will lead to “markedly different behavior” among consumers in Mainland China and Hong Kong tomorrow.

“We anticipate a continuing surge in online grocery shopping, and a drop in traditional grocery, as has already been widely reported by Chinese e-commerce players and observers,” the pair said in an email to Inside Retail Asia.

“However, this is contingent on whether merchants like Alibaba and JD will be able to fulfill the delivery orders effectively, which may be challenging given the sheer volume of demand and availability of staff during the crisis.”

Online retailers are delivery services are stretched in both markets, especially on the mainland where tens of thousands of retail stores and restaurants are closed either on local government orders or due to negligible demand as consumers stay at home to avoid contact with other people.

“After more than two weeks filled with fear and anxiety, consumers are also seeking unique experiences to energize themselves at this very moment, but they are also wary of going to public spaces,” said Martin and Wang.

“Therefore, instead of spending the upcoming Valentine’s Day at conventional venues such as cinemas or upmarket restaurants, people are more inclined to seek safer alternatives such as home-cooked candlelight dinners, ordering gifts and flowers online and having them delivered to their home.”

  • Less than Half of Filipinos are Fully Satisfied with the Valentine’s Day Gifts they Receive

Less than Half of Filipinos are Fully Satisfied with the Valentine’s Day Gifts they Receive

In an online survey of over 300 respondents, only a third (36%) of Filipinos are really happy with their Valentine’s Day gifts. Less than half (46%) said that they were satisfied while 3% expressed absolute dissatisfaction.

The survey, conducted by Lazada, explored the processes and reasons for the lack of contentment over Valentine’s Day gifts.

Avoid Cliché’s but Never Forget the Essentials

Almost one in four respondents (23%) expressed that chocolates and couple’s shirts are cliché, but the most cliché gifts are picture frames with over 40% of people agreeing they are passé.

On the other hand, over 30% of respondents agree that flowers are a must have, beating out chocolates (19%), stuffed toys (9.6%). Surprisingly, more and more people (15%) see gadgets as an essential gift for the month of romance.

    Ask and You Shall Receive

It seems surprise gifts are falling out of fashion as an overwhelming 86% of respondents prefer to express to their partners what they want. This transparency between couples extends to finding deals. 65% of respondents said they don’t mind sharing that they got their gifts on sale. The implicit learning is that if you get your partner the gift they want, it doesn’t matter if you got it on discount.

    Digital Love
The survey also explored love in the digital space. Overtly expressing affection over social media or “Online PDA” seems acceptable with 52% of respondents saying they practice social media PDA themselves.

However, when it comes to meeting love interests online, half of the respondents had hesitations with online dating. 51% agreed with the statement:  “Online shopping never hurt anyone, people do.” Talk about #hugot.

As our Valentine’s Day gifting habits evolve and improve, it is important for Filipinos to discover more convenient and cost effective ways to find the perfect gift. That’s why Lazada’s Valentine’s Day promo makes it the perfect place to get the gifts your partner wants in ways you can easily afford.

  • Asians embrace Valentines Day

    Asians embrace Valentines Day

Indonesians, Taiwanese and Singaporeans are far more likely to splurge on Valentine’s Day than shoppers in Germany or the UK, a survey reveals.

Japan’s home-grown global online retailer Rakuten has surveyed 7000 people across the globe to gauge attitudes to Valentine’s Day and found that Asians embrace the concept much more than Europeans.

The Rakuten Shopping Secrets survey found Indonesians (57 per cent), Taiwanese (53 per cent) and Singaporeans (45 per cent) placed top of the multi-national poll for being the most expectant to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, heading off other countries in the poll – the US (where the tradition has been the most commercialised), the UK, Spain and Germany.  According to the survey, love is not in the air for Germans (18 per cent) or the British (36 per cent), who were least likely to celebrate the occasion.

The survey also revealed that the majority of Singaporeans (59 per cent) do not expect to receive gifts on Valentine’s Day. But for those that are spirited enough to celebrate the occasion – receiving a trip or vacation (41 per cent), fashion accessories (27 per cent), chocolates wine and other food or drink (26 per cent) and jewellery (22 per cent) ranked highest among what they hoped to receive.

The survey also asked respondents about choosing shopping as “a break-up therapy”. Singaporeans, not surprisingly given their penchant for shopping, were the most likely (39 per cent), followed by neighbours Indonesia (38 per cent). Germans ranked lowest at just 19 per cent.

For those who hit the stores upon singlehood, fashion and accessories were the items most frequently bought post-breakup.

More than half of Singaporeans who have gone through a bad breakup or relationship prefer to drown their sorrows by shopping online rather than offline in the one month after a breakup. Not feeling like going out and interacting with people (58 per cent), wanting more privacy (55 per cent) and not wanting to let people see that they look depressed (26 per cent) were the top three reasons cited.

Launched in Singapore in January 2014, the Rakuten Singapore Marketplace currently carries over 200,000 goods from 300 merchants with a diverse mix of product categories, including fashion apparel and accessories, health and beauty products, consumer electronics, toys and games, food and beverages and home furniture.

Rakuten is headquartered in Tokyo, with over 10,000 employees and partner staff worldwide.
