Victoria Beckham Beauty range launched on Tmall Global

Victoria Beckham Beauty has launched a flagship store on Alibaba’s Tmall Global platform, marking the brand’s debut in China.

The Victoria Beckham Beauty online store features a wide range of skincare and makeup products, including the brand’s exclusive skincare line Power Glow Set, on Tmall Global platform.

To celebrate the launch, the brand has signed up one of China’s biggest influencers, Viya, to Livestream on Tmall Global.

“You can’t be a successful global brand without a solid China business – it’s just not possible these days,” said Sarah Creal, co-founder and CEO of Victoria Beckham Beauty. “So when we began to think about expanding to China, we knew that we wanted to partner with Tmall Global because it represents the best.

“We’re focused on building a strategic luxury beauty brand that is very modern, forward-thinking and fresh, and this is the next key step to our growth strategy,” she said

Sarah met Victoria Beckham during a makeup collaboration with Estee Lauder in 2016 and teamed up to create the cosmetics brand last year.

Victoria Beckham CEO steps down suddenly

Victoria Beckham CEO Paolo Riva has resigned from the company, citing personal reasons.

Victoria Beckham, the fashion label bearing the name of its founder, the one-time Spice Girl and model, has two stores – in Hong Kong and London.

Riva took up his role only last September. He will be replaced with immediate effect by chairman Ralph Toledano, who joined the business in March last year.

“I am proud of what I have accomplished with the team and wish the company great success for the future,” said Riva.

“It has been a real pleasure working with Paolo, and on behalf of the board, I would like to thank him for his contribution,” Toledano said, announcing the change. “I look forward to continuing to drive and implement the strategy for the brand with Victoria and the team.”

Product director Marie Leblanc de Reynies has been appointed to the new role of MD of brand and product and Pablo Sande, who has previously held roles with Salvatore Ferragamo and Burberry, as CFO and legal officer.

While Victoria Beckham has earned critical acclaim it is understood the brand has yet to make a profit with Beckham and her husband David, the high-profile businessman and former footballer, continuing to fund the label.

Victoria Beckham signed eyewear license deal with Marchon Eyewear

Marchon Eyewear and Victoria Beckham Ltd have entered into an exclusive, long-term global licensing agreement for sun and optical eyewear. New collections developed under the agreement will roll out globally beginning Fall next year. The collections will be developed in Italy to align with Victoria Beckham’s brand aesthetic. Paolo Riva, CEO of Victoria Beckham Ltd, said the new partnership with Marchon comes “as we work towards reaching our global potential and expanding the brand following a series of strategic partnerships and appointments since our new shareholders Neo Investment Partners joined the business at the end of last year”.

“Eyewear is synonymous with our founder and this license will allow us to scale our presence in the eyewear retail market and capitalise on Marchon’s technical innovation, expertise in product development and global distribution network.”

President and CEO of Marchon Eyewear Nicola Zotta added: “We believe that the Victoria Beckham brand is on the rise and quickly becoming one of the most influential in the industry. We are committed to the success of this partnership and look forward to producing eyewear that characterises the brand’s trend-forward designs and contributing to the brand’s continued global growth.”

The new line is planned to be sold globally in select department stores, specialty stores, and premium sun and optical retailers, as well as in Victoria Beckham retail locations and online at victoriabeckham.com.

  • Victoria Beckham unveils major expansion plans in Asia

Victoria Beckham unveils major expansion plans in Asia

Asia will be a particular focus as UK fashion brand Victoria Beckham pursues further geographical expansion.

This follows a £30 million (US$ 41.7 million) investment from NEO Investment Partners in December, plus the appointment of fashion-industry veteran Ralph Toledano as chairman.

Previously the CEO of Chloe, he will work closely with the team to “nurture the creative vision at the heart of the brand” as well as help it “prepare the business for its next phase of growth”, says the company.

Toledano says his ambition is to turn the brand into a modern luxury group, while reviewing its cost base to return it to profitability. He says further expansion, particularly in Asia, where Victoria Beckham has a store in Hong Kong, is a “realisation of the company’s direct-to-consumer ambitions”.

“Following the investment from NEO last year, I am thrilled to have the added expertise of Ralph as chairman,” says founder/creative director Victoria Beckham.

NEO Investment Partners brands also include Parisian contemporary menswear brand AMI Paris, cult Italian luxury leather-goods brand Valextra, luxury British design brand Tom Dixon and contemporary F&B and boutique hotel brand Experimental Group.

Neo Investment to Fund $40 million for Victoria Beckham

Fashion entrepreneur Victoria Beckham has raised £30 million (US$40 million) from growth equity firm Neo Investment Partners in exchange for a minority stake in her namesake luxury label.

While the terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, market insiders say the deal values the business at £100 million.

“As the business continues to grow, I appreciate the need for external investment which, in turn, would bring external expertise,” says the former Spice Girl. “Neo has shown it can take founder-led businesses with a global outlook to new heights. Our focus is on building a sustainable, profitable luxury brand.”

Neo Investment Partners founder/managing partner David Belhassen says Beckham is an inspiration to millions of women around the world. “She has built a unique, differentiated luxury brand with a strong identity and very high potential.”

Beckham plans to use the funding to expand the luxury womenswear brand’s physical retail and e-commerce presence, as well as drive growth of core product categories.

After a series licensing deals for eyewear, denim and fragrance, Beckham launched her own luxury womenswear line in 2008 with a range of dresses. Initially shunned by the fashion industry, she has since expanded into handbags, eyewear and shoes and currently employs 180 people with stores in London and Hong Kong as well as an e-commerce site.

Beckham teamed with Target last year for a capsule collection, and is now working on a collaboration with Reebok expected to launch late next year. “To challenge the traditional notions of fitness wear within a fashion context is something I have always wanted to do,” she says.

The Victoria Beckham label is controlled by Beckham Brand Holdings, a holding company that also owns the licensing of the former football star’s name. The company is owned by the husband-and-wife team of David and Victoria Beckham as well as Simon Fuller, the entertainment impresario who created the Idol franchise.

  • #Double11 2016 Singles Day Record Proves China’s E-Commerce Might

    #Double11 2016 Singles Day Record Proves China’s E-Commerce Might

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group has tallied more than US$1 billion in the first five minutes and US$5 billion in transactions in the first hour of its annual Singles Day sales blitz. That means China’s 2016 Singles Day shopping fest—aka Shuangshiyi or Double Eleven, since it takes place each November 11—retains its title as the world’s biggest online shopping event.

The final sales tally for the 24 hour global shopping spree: US$17.8 billion in GMV (gross merchandise volume) sales, or in China’s yuan or renminbi currency, RMB 120.7 billion. The vast majority (82%) of that shopping frenzy took place on mobile phones and devices, with $14.6 billion (RMB 98.97 billion) on mobile.

Last year, Alibaba’s digital shopping platforms racked up a total US$14.3 billion in sales, bypassing the $9.3 billion in #Double11 Singles Day sales in 2014 — meaning the 24-hour shopping spree has almost doubled in two years.

It’s also a proof point for Ant Financial Services Group, Alibaba’s fintech arm that operates its Alipay mobile payments platform. “The excitement around online shopping continues to build year after year, and it’s emblematic of the way that e-commerce is changing, giving consumers incredible access to products around the world,” said Ant Financial SVP Douglas Feagin to the South China Morning Post.

Ant Financial this year says it processed 1.05 billion transactions, an increase of 48 per cent from last year. At the peak of the madcap shopping within the first hour, as many as 120,000 transactions per second were processed, Feagin said. Ant brought innovation and speed to the online sales crush. Just as importantly, it helped finance merchants and consumers alike.

As SCMP reports, “Before the start of the so-called Singles’ Day shopping gala on November 11, Ant Financial’s MYbank unit granted over 50 billion yuan of loans to 1.33 million merchants to help them put their products online.Ant Financial’s Ant Credit Pay was also on hand to grant more than 100 million customers credit to finance their online shopping, Feagin said.”

At the half-way mark, it was clear that 2016’s event would surpass last year’s record, according to Alizila’s coverage:

At the 12 hour, 29 minute mark of the sale, total GMV had exceeded RMB 82.4 billion ($12 billion), with mobile accounting for 83.55 percent of the total.  Alibaba Group President Michael Evans had this to say: “With roughly 11 hours to go, we’re in a good place.” More than 14,000 international brands are participating in the sale, he said, and sales from international brands have so far accounted for about 30 percent of total GMV.

Virtual reality also played a role this year, with Tmall’s Buy+ billed as the world’s first virtual reality shopping experience. For the price of a 15 cent cardboard VR headset, shoppers could slip their smartphone into the headset and browse products from handbags to shoes to lingerie, and even have virtual models showcase the apparel and accessories on a catwalk.

Shoppers could browse eight digital stores using VR to assess the goods before buying them. Participating retailers include Macy’s, Target, Costco, P&G, Chemist Warehouse, Freedom Foods, Tokyo Otaku Mode and Matsumoto, part of the over 11,000 international brands that join in the fair.

The global online shopping event also introduced interactive games and partnerships with over one million brick-and-mortar shops, including a Pokemon Go-like mobile application to catch the Tmall cat mascot in offline locations of Tmall merchants in shopping malls to spur foot traffic to the merchants. In return, consumers can earn special prizes such as free subscriptions to Alibaba’s Youku TV.

It also teased this year’s 11.11 with teasers including an eight-hour live-streamed “see now buy now” fashion show from Shanghai, where consumers can order anything they see on the catwalk in real time from brands including Victoria’s Secret.

The goal of this technology is to “improve [the] consumer retail experience, I would say you’re looking at the future of retail. The future of retail is in China, not anywhere else,” Alibaba Group’s co-founder and vice chairman Joseph Tsai told a media briefing on Thursday in Shenzhen, China.

Leading the 11.11 international sales brigade this year were merchants from the US, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Germany. Most countries have already exceeded the volume of sales recorded for the entire sale last year.

It’s another astonishing Singles Day,  an annual promotion inviting consumers who are not in relationships to cheer up with some retail therapy — an anti-Valentine’s Day “treat yourself” event invented by Alibaba’s Tmall head, Daniel Zhang, in 2009 to rival America’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping events, and now surpasses both of them combined.

While 11.11 started with discounts, it has morphed into an event featuring global brands such as Apple and luxury brands such as Burberry and Maserati, which both operate branded Tmall stores.

As Teng Bingsheng, Associate Professor of Strategy at the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business (CKGSB) in Beijing, stated in a pre-event press release, “To some extent, people remember that Alibaba initiated the 11.11 shopping festival. However, other brands are quickly gaining their fair share as well. But as long as the whole pie – and Alibaba’s own business – both get bigger, it’s still good news.”

CKGSB Associate Professor of Accounting Zhang Weining added, “Double Eleven used to last for 24 hours, but this year it will stretch for 24 days. I think Alibaba foresaw that the sales growth rate would slow down this year, in part because more and more e-commerce platforms are running these campaigns and consumers are increasingly attracted to promotions offered prior to the day itself. This new strategy will also ease the pressure on delivery logistics, since sales will be more spread out.”

Jack Ma Kobe Bryant Alibaba Singles Day 11.11Chairman Jack Ma—who welcomed David and Victoria Beckham and Kobe Bryant (while Katy Perry dropped out for a family emergency) as ambassadors for this year’s event at its countdown gala—said Alibaba’s cloud computing system is “[by] far the most advanced that human beings can realize.”

Last year, the company processed 140,000 transactions per second via its cloud arm Aliyun during the shopping peak, while payment arm Alipay processed an additional 86,000 transactions per second at peak sale time.

The company reportedly plans to list in 2017 in either Shanghai or Hong Kong, making it China’s largest IPO since 2010 when the state-owned Agriculture Bank of China offered $22.1 billion worth of shares.

Brand partners were also vocal about what propelled Single’s Day sales this year: mobile (as Gap attested), personalization (such as Oreo) and virtual reality:

For its part, Walmart kicked off its Black Friday sales event today, along with Target, in a bid to attract shoppers in the mood for deals. Both retailers’ official in-store Black Friday sales begin at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving, reprising last year’s schedule despite murmurings that consumer interest in deal blitzing on Turkey-day may be waning.

While Office Depot and Mall of America announced they’ll be closed on Thanksgiving, Macy’s, Kohl’s and Toys R Us are joining Walmart and Target. Walmart will be “dramatically increasing” inventory to offer nearly 50 percent more Black Friday merchandise this year online than last year.

Walmart US CMO Steve Bratspies said that “We really pride ourselves on not being the retailer who advertises a great price but then only has a few available for the customers.”

Walmart deals include a Samsung 50-inch 4K television for $398 and movies that cost $1.99. Target is touting deals like an iPad Air 2 for $274 and 30 percent off apparel and the giant teddy bear for $10 that hijacked social media last year is back with 20 percent more bears!

Both big-boxers will start with offers over the next two weeks seeding the way for customer engagement as holiday spirit.

Target returns to its “10 days of deals” program, touting a single big promotion daily starting the weekend before Thanksgiving, while Walmart is offering limited-time Black Friday discounts and holding further price cuts for into December.

Still, some rang a cautionary note about Alibaba’s sales reporting, as the BBC reported: “Some have questioned the accuracy of the numbers, amid claims of inflated sales data at online retailers across China. Merchants passing off counterfeit goods as genuine is also an industry problem. Alibaba reported 85% of purchases had been made on mobile phones during Singles Day.”

Victoria Beckham Opens Second Fashion Store

Singer-turned-fashion designer Victoria Beckham unveiled her second fashion store in Hong Kong on Friday (16 Mar 2016).

The former Spice Girl launched the flagship store for her eponymous label in London in 2014, and she has now expanded her brand by opening a second retail space, which has been designed by the same architect Farshid Moussavi, in the region’s upmarket Central district.

Victoria flew into Hong Kong last week to put the finishing touches to her store, and she tells the South China Morning Post she has been involved in all aspects of the project.

“The process wasn’t easy… opening a store is a huge project. Together with my team, I’ve worked really hard to get to this point,” she said. “It’s important to me that I’m part of the decision making in all areas, whether that’s deciding what the changing rooms look like, to what fragrance we use in store, to what the receipts look like. I enjoy all of that, and I’m a perfectionist. I believe it’s all in the details.”

Victoria decided to open up in Asia because she believes women there appreciate luxury, quality and well-made clothes. She adds, “I’m always struck by how aware Chinese women are when it comes to fashion… Their knowledge of trends and brands is so deep, that being here you feel like you’re really part of a fashion conversation.”

Victoria, who wore over-sized sunglasses and a black turtleneck dress, was surrounded by security as she opened the store in front of the large crowd. To celebrate the moment, she posted a picture of herself posing in the store and tweeted, “#VBHongKong is open for business!! I love u fashion bunnies.”

She also posed with fans and they all made the peace sign with their hands, a nod to her Spice Girls days. In the caption, she wrote, “Loved meeting you all at my store today! #VBHongKong.”

Victoria, a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, will also attend an amfAR AIDS fundraising gala alongside Uma Thurman on Saturday (19 Mar 16).

  • Victoria Beckham launches Hong Kong store, her first outside Britain

Victoria Beckham launches Hong Kong store, her first outside Britain

Today, fashion designer Victoria Beckham launched her first shop outside Britain in Hong Kong as she seeks to tap the Asia market despite a downturn in luxury spending.

Beckham’s store in Hong Kong’s Landmark building lies at the heart of Central.

The British designer did a final check of the store this morning as crowds of fans waited outside, before sweeping out in a fitted black turtleneck dress and oversized sunglasses, surrounded by security.

Beckham’s designs are already available in the region, which is the brand’s fastest-growing market.

Hong Kong is Beckham’s first bricks-and-mortar store outside the UK, designed by London-based architect Farshid Moussavi.

“The process wasn’t easy… opening a store is a huge project. Together with my team, I’ve worked really hard to get to this point,” she told the South China Morning Post.

“I know Asian women really understand luxury, good quality and appreciate when garments are made well – and my clothes are,” Beckham added.

A photo posted on Beckham’s Instagram feed ahead of the launch showed her posing on a plinth next to a mannequin.

Beckham will also attend Saturday’s amfAR AIDS research fundraiser in Hong Kong, where stars including Uma Thurman will take to the red carpet.

The new store has been developed in collaboration with Asian fashion retail brand Joyce, which already carries her collections.

The brand aims at wearable luxury, from jeans and tailored shirts to dresses and accessories. Shirts sell online for around $400 with dresses selling upwards from a few hundred US dollars.

“I think she’s going to be very popular here,” said hedge fund manager Sally Zhang, 30, after browsing in the store Friday.

“Compared to other shops, which are too fancy, not fit for the office, this one is quite different,” said Echo Xu, also a hedge fund manager.

Beckham, 41, opened her first shop in London’s Mayfair in September 2014.

But despite Hong Kong shoppers’ warm welcome, Beckham faces challenges after the city posted its worst retail sales decline in 13 years in 2015.

The slump was fuelled by a drop in tourists from mainland China, which has particularly hit sales of luxury goods.

The Hong Kong dollar has strengthened against the yuan, making it more expensive for mainland visitors to shop. Growing anti-China sentiment in the semi-autonomous city is also keeping some away.

Hong Kong billionaire tycoon Li Ka-shing said yesterday that the business environment in the city was at its worst for 20 years, with property and retail “doing worse than during SARS,” referring to the 2003 disease outbreak.

Earlier today, minutes after taking a bow at her autumn/winter ’16/’17 show during New York Fashion Week, Victoria Beckham announced that her burgeoning retail empire is officially on the rise with a Hong Kong storefront scheduled to open in March.

“The women in Asia really know how to dress,” Beckham said to BagSnob founder Tina Craig on a video that appeared on Vogue China’s Instagram account. During Art Basel last March, the designer (and apparent celebrity wedding dress consultant) told the South China Morning Post that she was in the process of scouting potential brick-and-mortar locations in the metropolis.

Beckham, who showed a thoroughly modern collection of contrasting stripes, tuxedo jumpsuits and one particularly sophisticated take on an evening wear kilt, opened her first freestanding boutique on London’s Dover Street in September 2014. The Hong Kong shop marks Beckham’s first freestanding location in Asia and second in the world.

“Super chic sophisticated, understand and appreciate fashion…” continued the former Spice Girl and mother of four on her newest customer base. Her brood — along with newly-minted photog son Brooklyn and dashing husband David — sat, as usual, in the front row of her runway show near Anna Wintour. “They love getting dressed up.”

Beckham, wife of the famous footballer and fashion celebrity David Beckham, is now a fashion designer. She opened her first flagship store in London and is so pleased with its trading has committed to a second in Hong Kong.

“Our next store will be in Hong Kong in the first half of next year, which I am incredibly excited about,” she said in an interview published in the UK over the weekend.

Beckham, 41,  says her store will cater for every level of shopper – it will not be an exclusive designer boutique.

“I’ve always wanted people to be able to come to the store, whether it was just to browse, look at the architecture, buy a key ring or a full runway look. I have the most phenomenal shop staff.”

Beckham has two ranges: The original Victoria Beckham collection and VVB, a a newer sister range she is now expanding.

“The VVB collection actually merged with denim this season for the first time as a result of really listening to my customer and understanding that the two categories belong together.”

Cheered by her famous family, Victoria Beckham brought a sexy vision of fall/winter to an intimate New York runway show on Sunday and confided plans to open a second store in Asia.

Beckham said that 2015 would see her spend a lot of time in Asia, where she plans to open a second store after the success of her Dover Street boutique in London.
