    Vietjet Air and Bamboo Airways, two leading airline companies, have recently increased their rates for checked luggage by 15-25%. This price surge has come into effect just before the beginning of the high-demand summer travel season.

    Revised Baggage Prices

    According to a recently released pricing schedule, checking in 20 kg on Vietjet’s domestic flights has become 25% more expensive, now costing VND250,000 (equivalent to US$9.5) plus tax. For 30 and 40 kg luggage, the prices have risen by 20%, costing VND360,000 and VND480,000 respectively. Furthermore, the pricing for oversized bags and extra carry-on allowance has also seen an increase of approximately 20%.

    The price adjustments also apply to various international routes. For instance, the price for checked baggage weighing 20 kg on Southeast Asia flights has increased by 21%, amounting to VND580,000. Meanwhile, on flights to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and mainland China, the rate has similarly increased to VND700,000.

    Bamboo Airways has also implemented an approximate 15% increase on their domestic flights during peak seasons such as Tet (the Lunar New Year) and summer. The summer fees are set to be applicable from May 20 to August 15 as well as from August 27 to September 2.

    Implications of Rising Costs

    A flight booking agency in Ho Chi Minh City noted that several airlines have been increasing fares and other prices, such as checked baggage, seat selection, and in-flight meals, in response to the escalating fuel costs. It has been observed that customers, who previously focused solely on ticket prices, are now showing heightened awareness of baggage fees when planning their travel expenses, particularly families and long-term travelers who may end up adding millions of dong to each trip due to these charges.

    According to a report by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the prices of Jet A1 aviation fuel have consistently remained high in Asia, occasionally reaching US$214-216, as a result of Middle East tensions. This fluctuation in fuel prices has significantly impacted airlines’ operating costs and airfares in recent years.

    Vietjet will launch a new direct service between Nha Trang and Singapore from 1 June 2026, further expanding air connectivity between Singapore and Vietnam’s popular coastal destinations. The service marks Vietjet’s fifth direct route between the two countries, joining its existing connections to Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang and Phu Quoc, further enhancing connectivity, tourism, and trade between the two countries and across Southeast Asia.

    Travellers from Singapore will soon have direct access to Nha Trang, a beachside city along Vietnam’s south-central coast known for its long coastline, island-hopping experiences, and growing resort scene. The route will operate four times weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, providing a new direct link between Singapore and one of Vietnam’s most established coastal destinations in just approximately two hours and fifteen minutes for a convenient short-haul getaway.

    Vietjet has signed multiple strategic agreements with leading U.S. corporations and financial institutions, with a total value exceeding US$6.3 billion (approx. SGD7.99 billion). The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Vietnam’s General Secretary To Lam, alongside senior Vietnamese and U.S. government officials in Washington, D.C., where General Secretary To Lam attended the opening session of the United States-led Board of Peace, an international body established to support peace, stability, and reconstruction in Gaza, at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.

    The event comes amid continued momentum in Vietnam–U.S. relations, particularly across the economic, financial, and technology sectors. On this occasion, the State Bank of Vietnam and the U.S. Department of the Treasury also issued a joint statement reaffirming their commitment to enhanced cooperation under the Vietnam–U.S. Macroeconomic and Financial Policy Dialogue framework.

    US$5.4 Billion (Approx. SGD6.85 Billion) Engine and Maintenance Services Agreement with Pratt & Whitney

    Vietjet and Pratt & Whitney, an RTX business, a global leader in aircraft engines and engine services headquartered in the United States, signed an agreement covering the selection of Pratt & Whitney GTFTM engines, and comprehensive maintenance services for 44 A321NEO and A321XLR aircraft. The total estimated value of the contract is approximately US$5.4 billion (approx. SGD6.85 billion).

    Under the agreement, Pratt & Whitney will provide new-generation engines to optimise operational performance, reduce operating costs, and lower emissions, advancing Vietjet’s sustainable development and green transition strategy.

    Boeing 737-8 Aircraft Financing Agreement with U.S. Partner

    Vietjet also signed an aircraft financing agreement with Griffin Global Asset Management to finance six Boeing 737-8 aircraft, valued at approximately US$965 million (approx. SGD1.22 billion) at list prices.

    The agreement marks a significant step in Vietjet’s strategy to diversify international funding sources while strengthening its financial capacity and capital structure in line with global standards.

    Vietjet Aviation Joint Stock Company (HOSE: VJC) reported strong revenue and profit growth in the fourth quarter and full year of 2025. These results provide a solid foundation for Vietjet as it enters 2026 with ambitious global growth strategies.

    Network Expansion Strengthens Market Position, Including Singapore–Vietnam Connectivity

    In Q4/2025, Vietjet transported more than 6.7 million passengers across 36,100 flights.

    For the full year, the airline carried 28.2 million passengers on 153,000 flights, representing YoY growth of 9% and 11.2%, respectively. Total cargo volume reached 113,923 tons.

    Vietjet continues to hold the leading market share in Vietnam by passenger volumes across both domestic and international markets.

    In 2025, the airline operated 254 routes, including 52 domestic and 202 international services, and launched 22 new routes connecting Vietnam to key destinations, including Central Asia and China.

    To meet rising travel demand, driven by strong leisure and business traffic, particularly between Singapore and Vietnam, Vietjet expanded capacity to enhance connectivity and operational efficiency. The airline launched the Singapore – Phu Quoc route in May 2025, expanding its flight network between Singapore and Vietnam. The route was later increased from four weekly services to seven round-trip flights per week.     Effective Operations Sustain Profit Growth Momentum

    Based on its financial statements, Vietjet recorded separate revenue of VND29.035 trillion (approx. SGD1.43 billion) in Q4/2025, a 47% year-on-year (YoY) increase.

    In Q4/2025, Vietjet posted a separate pre-tax profit of VND475 billion (approx. SGD23.31 million) and consolidated pre-tax profit of VND579 billion (approx. SGD28.41 million), soaring 93.4% and 436% YoY, respectively.

    For the full year, Vietjet delivered strong performance, with separate revenue reaching VND81.426 trillion (approx. SGD3.99 billion), up 14% YoY. Separate gross profit for 2025 stood at VND8.213 trillion (approx. SGD403.23 million), supported by continued network expansion and lower fuel costs compared to the previous year.

    Vietjet’s consolidated revenue totalled VND82.093 trillion (approx. SGD4.03 billion), an increase of 14% YoY. Consolidated pre-tax and post-tax profit reached VND2.630 trillion (approx. SGD128.93 million) and VND2.123 trillion (approx. SGD104.06 million), growing 44.3% and 51.2%, respectively, and exceeding 120% of the annual plan.

    As of 31 December 2025, Vietjet’s total assets reached VND139.459 trillion (approx. SGD6.84 billion). The net debt-to-equity ratio stood at 2.25, while the liquidity ratio reached 1.53, among the strongest in the aviation industry.

    During the year, Vietjet successfully issued 50 million shares, increasing equity by VND5 trillion (approx. SGD245.5 million), to support long-term growth.

    Strengthening International Cooperation and Long-term Investment

    In 2025, Vietjet took delivery of 22 new aircraft, representing its largest fleet expansion since its establishment and reinforcing capacity for the next phase of growth.

    The airline also signed an agreement with Airbus to purchase 100 A321neo aircraft, alongside a separate contract with Rolls-Royce for 92 Trent 7000 engines and comprehensive maintenance services, valued at US$3.8 billion (approx. SGD4.83 billion).

    In December, Vietjet Thailand received its first Boeing aircraft, expanding the group’s fleet scale ahead of 2026.

    Vietjet continued to invest in talent and training through international-standard pilot training partnerships. In 2025, Vietjet Aviation Academy (VJAA) trained more than 162,000 trainees through 15,198 courses; proactively developing pilots, technical staff, ground operations staff and other aviation professionals to meet rising industry demand.

    At Long Thanh International Airport, the airline marked two key milestones: the topping out of its international-standard aircraft maintenance hangar and the operation of its first flight to the under-construction airport.

    Order Details

    The new order comprises 24 A321neo and 20 A321XLR aircraft. The first batch of deliveries is slated to begin in July 2026. Besides supplying the GTF engines, Pratt & Whitney has pledged to offer Vietjet engine maintenance services under a 12-year EngineWise comprehensive maintenance plan.

    “The GTF engine is powering our growth with industry-leading operating economics and fuel efficiency of up to 20% lower than earlier aircraft,” commented Vietjet’s managing director Nguyen Thanh Son.

    Vietjet has marked two significant milestones at Long Thanh International Airport with the topping-out of its international-standard aircraft maintenance hangar and the operation of its inaugural flight to the airport. Long Thanh International Airport is being developed as Vietnam’s largest international airport once fully completed supporting the country’s and Vietjet’s long-term aviation and connectivity needs. These milestones further strengthen regional connectivity and operations through Vietjet’s growing network, including key markets such as Singapore.

    The aircraft maintenance facility, which broke ground on 19 August 2025, forms part of the Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Center complex at Long Thanh. Developed on an 8.4-hectare site with a total investment of up to USD100 million, the project comprises Hangars No. 3 and No. 4. The facility is designed, managed, and supervised by leading international consultants Mace (United Kingdom) and Apave (France).

    Once completed, the hangars will be able to accommodate up to six narrow-body and two wide-body aircraft simultaneously, or up to ten narrow-body aircraft. The project incorporates a long-span steel structure engineered to support large-scale aircraft maintenance operations and future fleet growth.

    The topping-out was completed on schedule despite complex construction conditions, reflecting close coordination between Vietjet and its international partners. When operational, the facility is expected to strengthen regional maintenance capacity, reduce reliance on overseas technical services, and improve cost-efficiency across the airline’s operations, while supporting skilled employment in the aviation sector.

    On the same day, Vietjet operated its inaugural flight, VJ038, from Tan Son Nhat International Airport to Long Thanh International Airport using an Airbus A321neo aircraft. The flight marks an early operational milestone as Long Thanh progressively transitions into a key hub for Vietnam’s international air traffic.

    A late-night Airbus alert triggered an emergency EASA directive, giving airlines just 32 hours to update critical flight-control software or face aircraft grounding.

    When Airbus issued an urgent technical alert at 11:00 p.m. on 28 November, Vietjet was thrust into one of the most time-critical operational challenges affecting its Airbus A320-series fleet.

    The alert was followed by a mandatory Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), requiring ELAC (Elevator and Aileron Computer) flight-control software on all Airbus A319, A320, and A321 aircraft worldwide to be updated or replaced by 6:59 a.m. on 30 November.

    The directive addressed a specific technical risk. Under certain conditions, the software could be affected by solar radiation interference, potentially triggering uncommanded nose-down inputs. Nearly 6,000 aircraft globally were impacted. In Vietnam alone, 81 aircraft required urgent action, 69 of which were operated by Vietjet.

    The resulting 32-hour window marked an unprecedented operational challenge for Vietnam’s aviation sector, according to a report by Tuoi Tre News.

    Immediate activation of emergency operations

    Within hours of receiving Airbus’ alert, Vietjet activated its Emergency Response Committee, mobilising engineering, flight operations, scheduling, and technology teams across its network.

    Using its AMOS (Aircraft Maintenance and Engineering Operating System) maintenance management system, which integrates fleet data and predictive analysis, Vietjet conducted a real-time assessment of aircraft configurations, locations, and operational constraints. At the same time, contingency plans were developed to maintain network stability, including aircraft redeployment and schedule optimisation to minimise passenger disruption.

    Logistics added further complexity. Airbus estimated that each software update would typically take two to three hours per aircraft, while specialised equipment was limited and aircraft were operating across multiple domestic and international stations.

    A breakthrough on the hangar floor

    The operation reached a turning point in Da Nang, where Vietjet engineer Nguyen Van Trung, drawing on more than 15 years of operational experience, completed a full ELAC software update in just 45 minutes without bypassing any mandatory safety steps.

    Aircraft software updates are multi-layered procedures. Each aircraft has a unique configuration that must be verified, standardised, tested, and cross-checked. One engineer performs the update, while another independently monitors parameters and documentation.

    “Nothing can be skipped,” Trung was quoted as saying. “But experience allows you to know exactly where time can be optimised, and where it absolutely cannot.”

    The first aircraft to complete the update, VN-A644, became the reference point for the revised procedure. The optimised workflow was subsequently standardised and shared with engineering teams at Noi Bai, Tan Son Nhat, and international stations, accelerating progress across the fleet.

    Technology, teamwork, and contingency planning

    Alongside software updates, Vietjet prepared hardware contingency solutions, including pre-positioning ELAC units from grounded aircraft for immediate replacement if required.

    The airline also received support from Vietjet Thailand and other carriers, including Vietnam Airlines and Bamboo Airways, which provided additional equipment to help scale the operation.

    Digitalised technical documentation on iPads, standardised software libraries, and real-time fleet visibility enabled teams to compress administrative timelines while maintaining full compliance with Airbus and EASA safety requirements.

    Aircraft were scheduled for updates between flights at the airline’s main technical bases, allowing the airline to meet the regulatory deadline while maintaining operational continuity.

    Completed ahead of deadline

    By 3:00 a.m. on 30 November, all 69 affected Vietjet aircraft had completed the required software updates, nearly four hours ahead of the EASA deadline. No aircraft was grounded as a result of the issue, and flight operations continued throughout the operation.

    For Vietjet’s leadership, engineering, and operations team, the final hours of November were focused on execution under regulatory time pressure.

    As Vietjet’s Standing Vice President To Viet Thang noted, the 32-hour effort stands as a defining moment — one that transformed a standard three-hour procedure into a 45-minute benchmark under extreme pressure, while upholding uncompromising safety standards.

    A test of operational resilience

    According to Uong Viet Dung, Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), Vietnamese airlines responded proactively following Airbus’ alert.

    Despite the unusually large number of affected aircraft, Vietjet had prepared adequately in terms of technical capability, personnel, equipment, and digital systems, enabling the airline to meet the emergency airworthiness requirements within the mandated timeframe.

    The operation highlighted the airline’s ability to rapidly assess resources, deploy optimised technical solutions, and balance flight operations with mandatory maintenance requirements, in line with international safety standards and regulatory standards.

    Rather than a singular technical fix, the 32-hour response reflected coordinated planning, technical discipline, and cross-border collaboration. In an industry governed by strict safety margins and fixed deadlines, the episode underscored Vietjet’s operational readiness when responding to time-critical regulatory demands.
