FPT Retail debuts mobile virtual network in Vietnam

Electronics retailer FPT Retail has unveiled its own mobile virtual network, marking it as the country’s fifth such network.

Known for operating the FPT Shop chain and being a subsidiary of the tech giant FPT, FPT Retail does not have its own network infrastructure but leases network services from MobiFone and offers subscriptions to consumers at its own pricing.

With an established ecosystem that includes over 800 FPT Shops across 63 Vietnamese cities and provinces, FPT Retail is poised to leverage its substantial retail presence. These shops annually sell around 1.5 million smartphones and various electronic gadgets.

The new network will be infused with advanced features like cloud computing and artificial intelligence, targeting a demographic keen on cutting-edge technologies, specifically younger consumers. It also aims to cater to businesses and households.

FPT Retail’s strategy involves incorporating various FPT services into the network, enhancing the overall user experience, said CEO Hoang Trung Kien.

The introduction of this network adds to the existing roster of mobile virtual network operators in Vietnam, which currently includes iTel, Wintel, Local, and VNSKY.

As of early 2023, these operators collectively serviced about 2.56 million subscribers, accounting for 2.1% of the total Vietnamese market.

The majority of the market is still dominated by five telecom firms that own network infrastructure, namely VinaPhone, Viettel, MobiFone, Vietnammobile, and Gtel.

Mobile virtual network operators hold 1% market share

With over one million subscribers, the country’s three mobile virtual network operators, who piggyback on large telecom companies, have a market share of 1%.

iTel, Reddi and Local do not have their own infrastructure or radio frequencies and instead pay to use VinaPhone, Viettel, MobiFone, Vietnamobile, or Gtel’s.

iTel, which depends on VinaPhone’s infrastructure and frequencies, has one million subscribers, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications.

It reported revenues of VND442 billion ($18.4 million) this year, 4.5 times the whole of last year’s, and profits of VND28 billion.

Reddi, which has nearly 50,000 subscribers, saw sales of VND15 billion. It had losses of VND27.8 billion and VND55.9 billion in 2020 and 2021.

Local, which launched its services in mid-2022, focuses on providing low-cost data packages, which are preferred by young people.

In April Digilife Vietnam Digital Services Company received a mobile virtual network operator’s license but has yet to begin offering services.

Such companies focus on attracting customers interested in large data packages at reasonable charges such as workers, students and foreign tourists.

Vietnam had nearly 120 million mobile phone subscribers, including some 93.7 million using smartphones, according to the ministry.

The mobile money service, which allows users to deposit, withdraw, pay or transfer money on mobile devices, has signed up nearly 2.2 million subscribers in eight months.

Of the customers, 69% are from rural and mountainous areas, according to the Ministry of Information and Communications.

The service are jointly offered on a trial basis by three leading telecommunications service providers Viettel, MobiFone and VinaPhone. Viettel has roughly 1.4 million mobile money users, VinaPhone, 700,000, and MobiFone, nearly 500,000.

Viettel and VinaPhone customers can transfer money from Mobile Phone accounts to bank accounts and vice versa. In the past, they had to deposit or withdraw money at transaction offices or authorized agents of the mobile network operators.

As of late September, Vietnam had nearly 120 million mobile phone subscribers, including some 93.7 million using smartphones, according to the ministry.

Vietnam gets its first MVNO Provider

Indochina Telecom has become the first MVNO in Vietnam, operating on the VinaPhone network. The operator is initially introducing services for workers in industrial parks in nine provinces and cities.

Indochina Telecom has been attempting for over a decade to launch MVNO services in Vietnam, the report states. The company had initially failed to negotiate an MVNE deal with Viettel, but has secured one with VinaPhone, the mobile subsidiary of VNPT.

The company plans to introduce a variety of packages tailored to different groups and user segments, and will cooperate with Vietnam’s mobile network operators to negotiate the best deals.

Indochina Telecom’s introductory package provides unlimited under 20 minute within network and 30 minute out of network calls for 77,000 dong ($3.31) per month.

Vinaphone debuts carrier billing on Google Play

Vietnam’s Vinaphone has become the fourth and last of the nation’s four major mobile operators to launch carrier billing over Google Play using the Fortumo payments platform.

The operator’s 20 million subscribers will be able to use the Fortumo platform to pay for apps and in-app content using their airtime balance.

With the launch, 95% of the population of Vietnam can now make payments on Google Play through Fortumo – significant for a country with smartphone penetration of 40% but credit card ownership of below 2%.

Fortumo will also provide Vinaphone with access to its Fortumo Insight statistics and data analytics platform, which helps operators analyze the performance of Google Play and use the data to make improvements to their payment infrastructure and marketing campaigns using the platform.

“Vietnam is one of Asia’s fastest growing markets for mobile services. Vinaphone has been able to successfully capitalize on this expansion and enabling Google Play for carrier billing is the logical step for Vinaphone to accelerate the growth further,” Forumo chief business officer Gerri Kodres said.

“Fortumo has established itself as the provider of choice for carriers in Asia and we are proud to help Vinaphone make Google Play payments available to millions of their users.”

VinaPhone launches Vietnam’s first 4G services

Vietnam’s VinaPhone has become the market’s first operator to launch 4G services, commencing with a deployment providing full coverage of Phu Quoc Island.

The VNPT mobile subsidiary has deployed 100 4G base stations to provide total coverage of the island.

The operator plans to rapidly deploy 4G services in 2017, installing 21,000 base stations nationwide.

Pricing will be set at the same or in some cases lower rates than 3G services. The company will use the network for services including mobile TV and cloud video conferencing.

VinaPhone began commercial 4G trials in January, and was awarded a commercial license in the 1800-MHz band last month, along with MobiFone and Viettel.

Viettel has separately revealed plans to launch its own 4G services in the first quarter of next year. The operator is ready to deploy services nationwide following extensive testing in the province of Vung Tau.

According to the report, Viettel plans to differentiate by focusing on nationwide expansion, in contrast to deploying in major cities first. The company took a similar approach during it 2G rollout around a decade earlier.

  • MobiFone Vietnam moves into retail

    MobiFone Vietnam moves into retail

Vietnam telco MobiFone says it will focus on expanding its retail presence in the coming year as it competes for market share.

MobiFone Vietnam is one of three key mobile phone networks fiercely competing for a share of the nation’s burgeoning telecommunications business.

In recent years rivals Viettel and VinaPhone have all stepped up their retail presence, but MobiFone has less profile at storefront level.

Speaking at a shareholders meeting last week, MobiFone Vietnam general director Cao Duy Hai said the company will focus on its businesses in telecom, television, retail and multimedia in the 2015-20 period.

He said the company planned “a large distribution channel” to increase MobiFone’s market share. Local commentators suggest this may include partnerships with mobile phone brands such as Samsung, Apple, Oppo and Huawei, all strong players in Vietnam.

Viettel has stores in many cities and provinces throughout the country and VinaPhone has co-operated with Apple, among others, to distribute its products. But MobiFone tends to rely on trade through independent stores who can connect customers to any of the networks.

MobiFone is 100 per cent Government owned and also has businesses in construction, minerals, broadcasting and multimedia.
