    UOB deepens partnership with VMware to enable safe and effective

    As the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the majority of the workforce shifting to home-based work, United Overseas Bank (UOB), a leading bank in Asia, collaborated with VMware to enable the Bank to continue its innovation drive without disruption. UOB was one of the fastest organizations in ASEAN to deploy a secure virtual desktop – UOB DevTop – for its team of 3,000 information technology (IT) developers, having done so in just 21 days instead of the up to three months it would typically take. Designed to meet the Bank’s robust security standards and to minimize risks, UOB DevTop provides IT developers with a secure sandbox to test and to implement upgrades to UOB’s digital services and solutions. This enabled its IT developers to meet the Bank’s software development schedules without disruption or delay as they move to work from home within weeks.

    UOB developed UOB DevTop by integrating VMware’s virtual desktop solution VMware Horizon with UOB’s highly secure IT and hybrid cloud infrastructures. This infrastructure was vital to the Bank being able to accelerate the deployment of UOB DevTop as the Bank did not need to install hardware servers on its premises even as it expanded its computing capacity to meet the surge in load with 3,000 IT developers working remotely.

    Through safer and remote access to the Bank’s development environment, UOB’s team of IT developers achieved significant milestones for several software development projects this year. Within the last three months alone, UOB has launched three industry-leading innovative solutions.

    In August, UOB launched it ASEAN digital bank, TMRW, in Indonesia. In September, the Bank launched its all-in-one mobile banking app UOB Mighty in Malaysia, featuring a new user interface and features that tap artificial intelligence to help customers spend and save more wisely. In the same month, UOB also launched UOB Infinity, a new mobile app for its clients across regions that provides these businesses with intuitive features such as a customizable desktop, cash management capabilities, and trade services to meet their banking needs.

    VMware announces 5G-ready Telco Cloud platform

    VMware has announced the launch of its 5G-ready Telco Cloud platform, as well as new solutions aimed at helping ease operators’ migration to 5G.

    Announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the new Telco Cloud platform is optimized for both 4G and 5G using a single architecture that supports both networks.

    “5G is at a massive inflection point, and planning decisions made today will have far reaching financial and operational ramifications for CSPs going forward,” VMware EVP for strategy and corporate development and GM for Telco NFV Group Shekar Ayyar said.

    “By moving away from the inflexible, hardware-defined architectures of the past, and rolling out 5G as a fully-virtualized architecture right out of the gate, telcos will be able to beat competitors to market with new value-added services and improve the performance and operational efficiencies of their networks. VMware today provides the best foundation for the 5G-ready telco cloud.”

    The company also announced new and upgraded solutions in its telco portfolio aimed at helping operators prepare their networks for 5G.

    These include VMware Smart Assurance 10, that will provide full integration with VMware vCloud NFV, the new VMware NSX-T 2.4 Data Center release, and an expanded VMware Ready for NFV Certification Program.

    The upgraded portfolio also includes Vmware HCX – which is designed to help operators build hybrid highways interconnecting heritage infrastructure and 5G environments on which commercial OpenStack ecosystem workloads can be migrated to a distributed, multi-cloud architecture.

    Singtel, VMware to accelerate DX in APAC

    Singtel has entered a partnership with VMware International to set up a Digital Transformation Foundry in Singapore.

    The new facility will be designed as a virtual sandbox for customers to conduct proof-of-concept experiments aimed at bringing digital solutions to market more quickly.

    Enterprises will be able to test their solutions in a hybrid cloud environment before deploying them across the organization.

    The companies will initially focus on providing a suite of four cloud services aimed at allowing customers to modernize their data centers, integrate public and private clouds, improve information security and develop cutting edge digital workspaces.

    These include a private cloud service that aims to provide similar agility and scalability to public clouds, a hybrid cloud service designed to facilitate seamless application mobility, disaster recovery and migration across multiple clouds, and a multi-cloud managed security service.

    Singtel and VMware also plan to establish similar cloud foundries in Australia and Hong Kong in the future.

    “Digitalization lies at the heart of most companies’ transformation. Many companies share the need to migrate to and operate in the cloud, get their networks software-driven in order to create workplaces of the future,” Singtel CEO group enterprise Bill Chang said.

    “The Foundry will empower customers to implement an integrated cloud solution with ease.     VMware and HP have teamed up to simplify device lifecycle management for all of an organization’s endpoints.

    Under the partnership, HP will add VMware Workspace ONE to its Device as a Service (DaaS) technology platform.

    Workspace ONE, an integrated platform powered by VMware AirWatch Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) technology, provides a holistic and user-centric approach to managing all endpoints in an organization – from mobile and desktop to IoT.

    HP DaaS offers a modern consumption model for computing in which hardware and lifecycle services are combined to improve the user experience and free up IT resources to drive growth.

    “In the mobile cloud era, employees, devices, applications and data increasingly live beyond the physical walls of the workplace, the datacenter, or the network,” VMware COO Sanjay Poonen said.

    “Digital enterprises are struggling to deliver a unified digital workspace due to disjointed technology and teams. We are proud to be the first to bring together identity, device management and application delivery on a single integrated platform so business can be conducted by mobile end-users regardless of platform, location, device or application.”

    VMware and Dell first entered a partnership in February 2016. CEO Pat Gelsinger spoke about the constantly expanding partnership during Dell EMC World in May this year.

    He spoke about the integration of VMware AirWatch and Dell Client Command Suite client systems management tools which ultimately became part of Workspace ONE; to enable customers to empower their workforce to securely bring the technology of their choice (devices and apps) at the pace and cost the business needs.

    VMware to integrate Horizon Cloud with Azure

    Virtualization company VMware has announced plans to deliver VMware Horizon Cloud on the Microsoft Azure public cloud platform.

    The integration is designed to help customers accelerate the move to Windows 10 and brings VMware virtual desktops and applications to the increasing global presence of Azure in the enterprise – available in 38 regions globally.

    “The addition of VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure puts VMware in a unique position to offer customers several infrastructure options for virtual desktops and applications with the flexibility to move between different platforms,” said Sumit Dhawan, senior vice president and general manager for end-user computing at VMware.

    “This is an example of VMware executing against its cross-cloud strategy and bringing innovation to the desktop-as-a-service (DaaS) category it pioneered in 2009.”

    Horizon Cloud uses a single cloud control plane to let customers choose their preferred infrastructure for delivering and managing virtual desktops and applications.

    Customers can choose from several deployment options and can dynamically switch options if use cases change, employees move or economics shift. The options include fully managed public cloud infrastructure from either VMware or Microsoft, as well as bring your own on premise infrastructure.

    VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure is expected to be available in the second half of 2017.

    Samsung, VMware team up for simpler IoT

    Samsung Electronics and VMware announced a new collaboration to help simplify Internet of Things (IoT) for both information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) teams by expanding end-to-end IoT solutions for industrial and enterprise customers.

    The companies will showcase the combination of the Samsung Artik Smart IoT platform with VMware Pulse IoT Center, offering a secure, enterprise-grade, end-to-end IoT infrastructure solution that allows IT and OT teams to have complete control of their IoT use cases, from the edge to the cloud.

    In addition, the companies will showcase the integration of the Samsung Artik 530 with Liota (Little IoT Agent), a vendor-neutral open source software development kit developed by VMware, to help enterprise customers with the management, monitoring and securing of their IoT implementation.

    While Samsung Artik Smart IoT platform provides customers with all the upfront IoT hardware and software they need to kick start their IoT developments, VMware will help manage IoT infrastructure from the edge all the way to the cloud.

    The combination will provide an end-to-end solution, including the hardware and software components, security, cloud connectivity, building services, and ability to monitor and manage the products over the product’s lifecycle.

    “Being able to monitor and manage these (IoT) solutions across devices at enterprise scale both on premise and in the cloud is critical for successful rollouts,” said Curtis Sasaki, VP of ecosystems at Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center.

    VMware, Taiwan’s III join Broadband Forum

    VMware, Taiwan’s Institute for Information Industry (III) and the USA’s Methode Electronics have become the latest members of the Broadband Forum.

    The latest additions highlight recent developments within the Broadband Forum to address the constantly changing technological landscape and increase the focus of its work.

    The industry body is also working to collaborate more with open source communities and increase the amount of work it does in the software space.

    VMware, III and Methode Electronics will complement this, with all three companies having backgrounds in virtualization, electronics and R&D.

    The new members are already playing an active part in the Forum, with representatives attending the Forum’s most recent Quarterly Meeting, held in Berlin. Moving forward, they will continue to play a full role in activities and Working Groups.

    III believes its membership will enhance the prosperous development of industries and incubate new industries, as well as promote links between local industries and the rest of the world.

    “Actively participating with an international organization like the Broadband Forum is just the beginning for III,” commented Dr Ko-Yang Wang, director general of the III’s Industry Development Augmentation Division (IDAD).

    “Looking into the future, III fully supports the Forum’s new Broadband 20/20 vision and we are fully confident that its realization will be the next big thing for broadband.”

    The developments in Berlin – including the publication of the landmark Network Enhanced Residential Gateway (NERG) Virtualization Technical Report (TR-317), the first finished project in the Forum’s NFV realm – followed on from the Forum’s Special Meeting in Atlanta, where Service Providers gave their views and visions on how the network needs to develop.

    “We’re delighted to welcome VMware, III and Methode Electronics into the Broadband Forum family,” Broadband Forum CEO Robin Mersh said.

    “Our recent meetings have illustrated our ability to keep up with the rapid pace of change within the industry and work together to create a faster and highly relevant Broadband Forum.     VMware, AWS to launch joint hybrid cloud service

    VMware and AWS have teamed up to provide an integrated hybrid offering that promises to give customers the full software-defined data center (SDDC) experience.

    VMware Cloud on AWS will enable customers to run applications across VMware vSphere-based private, public, and hybrid cloud environments.

    To be available in mid-2017, the service will be delivered, sold, and supported by VMware as an on-demand, elastically scalable service. VMware Cloud on AWS will allow VMware customers to use their existing VMware software and tools to leverage AWS’s global footprint and breadth of services, including storage, databases, analytics and more.

    VMware Cloud on AWS is powered by VMware Cloud Foundation, a unified SDDC platform that integrates VMware vSphere, VMware Virtual SAN and NSX virtualization technologies, and will provide access to the full range of AWS services.

    This new service will run on next-generation, elastic, bare metal AWS infrastructure.

    Pat Gelsinger, CEO of VMware, said the new service will make it easier for customers to preserve their investment in existing applications and processes while taking advantage of the global footprint, advanced capabilities, and scale of the AWS public cloud.

    “Our customers continue to ask us to make it easier for them to run their existing datacenter investments alongside AWS,” said Andy Jassy, CEO of AWS.

    “Most enterprises are already virtualized using VMware, and now with VMware Cloud on AWS, for the first time, it will be easy for customers to operate a consistent and seamless hybrid IT environment using their existing VMware tools on AWS, and without having to purchase custom hardware, rewrite their applications, or modify their operating model.”

    VMware launches cross-cloud architecture

    VMware launched its Cross-Cloud Architecture at VMworld 2016, along with a partnership with IBM Cloud and plans to extend to Google, Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services.

    The architecture is designed to let network operators manage, provide uniform policies for and secure applications running across public, private and hybrid clouds.

    Cross-Cloud Architecture is available in two main parts:

    • The VMware Cloud Foundation is designed to allow network operators to launch private clouds and extend them to the public cloud. It is an integration that VMware says will combine some of its existing compute, storage and networking virtualization offerings, helping organizations run and manage existing on-premises applications on both private and public clouds.
    • Cross Cloud Services, announced as a technology preview, runs applications across multiple public clouds, including IBM, AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google, as well as VMware’s vCloud Air hybrid cloud architecture and the vCloud Air Network of 4,000 service providers.

    The new Cross-Cloud strategy sees the company focusing more on selling products that work with existing leaders, rather than trying to establish itself as an alternative to AWS, Google or Azure. It will also provide an essential orchestration layer that helps network operators coordinate cloud applications

    As more companies run applications on rented infrastructure over the internet rather than their own data centers, providing the link to the different technologies customers use is a growing opportunity for VMware and something that it can also provide to partners like IBM.

    Earlier this year, IBM and VMware set out to tackle one of the industry’s most pressing challenges: extending existing VMware workloads from on-premises environments to the cloud without incurring the cost and risk associated with retooling operations, re-architecting applications and re-designing security policies.

    During a presentation, Guido Appenzeller, chief technology strategy officer of networking and security at VMware and Robert LeBlanc, senior vice president, IBM Cloud said that Cloud Foundation will “automatically provision pre-configured” software-defined data centers on IBM Cloud “in hours versus weeks or months.”
