    Docomo Pacific set to launch first VoLTE services for Guam and the CNMI

    As part of the rollout of the next generation of wireless technology, DOCOMO PACIFIC is preparing to launch the first VoLTE services in Guam and the CNMI.

    VoLTE or Voice over Long-Term Evolution allows customers to place a phone call over your LTE connection instead of the traditional voice network, resulting in high-definition (HD) Voice services providing clearer audio quality.

    VoLTE lets you experience HD Voice calls with minimal background noise, making it much easier and clearer for both people on a call to hear one another. The mixture of voice and data to make calls will produce faster call setup times and quicker connections. Additionally, VoLTE services are less power-intensive than calls being made over a 3G connection, resulting in better battery life.

    VoLTE allows the efficient use of network resources, helping to lower operational costs. With the use of VoLTE, voice traffic is routed over the 4G LTE network used to transmit data, freeing up spectrum for the 5G technology that DOCOMO PACIFIC will launch soon.

    On June 19th, DOCOMO PACIFIC engineers made the first commercial VoLTE call on Guam and the following day they made the first VoLTE call to Saipan. The commercial launch of VoLTE services will begin to roll-out in July 2019 for VoLTE capable devices on DOCOMO PACIFIC’s network. VoLTE services will be an added value to our existing services and will not come at any additional cost.

    In March 2019, NTT DOCOMO was the first to bring 5G to Guam with the opening of the DOCOMO 5G Open Lab Guam. The 5G Open Lab allows worldwide partners including businesses on Guam to test the first 5G environment and co-create practical solutions using 5G.

    ZTE, China Mobile, Ericsson conduct 5G-4G VoLTE call

    ZTE, the Guangzhou branch of China Mobile and Ericsson have announced a joint demonstration of a VoLTE voice and video call between 5G and 4G smartphones.

    The successful call, completed at the end of March, utilized non-standalone 5G networks provided by different vendors, as well as China Mobile Guangzhou’s existing 4G network.

    It used ZTE’s 5G and 4G smartphones for the VoLTE voice and video call, as well as network equipment from the two vendors.

    Guangzhou is one of five 5G pilot cities for China Mobile, which is investing the most heavily in 5G among China’s big three mobile operators.

    Airtel contracts Ericsson for VoLTE upgrade

    India’s Bharti Airtel has contracted Ericsson to expand its voice over LTE (VoLTE)services to cater to growing demand.

    Under the agreement, Airtel will deploy Ericsson’s Cloud VoLTE solution, which is used to deliver HD voice enabled VoLTE services onto a customer data center.

    Ericsson Cloud VoLTE includes a virtual IMS and supporting nodes to add VoLTE services onto existing LTE data networks.

    The upgrade forms part of Bharti Airtel’s network transformation program, Project Leap, and is aimed at helping Airtel carve out a larger share of the growing Indian VoLTE market. Ericsson’s latest Mobility Report predicts that there will be 780 million VoLTE subscriptions in India by 2023.

    “We remain committed to building a state-of-the-art future-ready network as part of…Project Leap, and delivering best-in-class digital experiences to our smartphone customers,” Bharti Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon commented.

    “This partnership with Ericsson will allow us to rapidly increase VoLTE capacity to serve our growing traffic, and make our network prepared to easily introduce new communication services today and in 5G.”

  • CTM, csl launch VoLTE roaming between Hong Kong and Macau

    CTM, csl launch VoLTE roaming between Hong Kong and Macau

    Hong Kong’s csl, Macau’s CTM and PCCW Global have jointly launched the first service offering end to end VoLTE and video over LTE calling services between Hong Kong and Macau.

    The new service will be available to mobile customers of the csl, 1O1O and CTM brands at no extra charge. It makes use of csl sister company PCCW Global’s high-speed IP connection between the two markets.

    CTM and csl jointly launched he Call Macau Home Pass voice, data, SMS and video call roaming service last year. The service has a monthly fee of HK$138 ($17.75) or a daily fee of HK$38.

    “CTM was the first telco in Macau launching the VoLTE and ViLTE services last year. This year, we are delighted to have achieved new breakthroughs in the service level through the collaboration with and PCCW Global on a broader horizon,” CTM CEO Vandy Poon said.

    “Upcoming, we will continue to develop our local and roaming services to facilitate Macau’s trade and economic exchange with foreign countries and to promote the diversified development of the Macau economy as well as the enhancement of our customer experience.”

    Former monopoly CTM still dominates the Macau mobile market. Earlier this month, the Macau Business Daily published a collective statement from the operator’s rivals calling on the MSAR government to even the playing field by reducing the cost of leased line access and creating conditions that would encourage investments in competing network infrastructure.

    Netcracker Technology has unveiled its Cloud-Based Online Charging System (OCS), a next-generation offering that has been optimized to meet the requirements of the digital world.

    As the industry’s first always-active OCS platform, Netcracker’s Cloud-Based OCS addresses all of the key pain points associated with legacy, hardware-based charging systems.

    The platform enables always-on availability at a lower cost as well as cloud elasticity and scalability in order to keep up with the demands of digitalization.

    The platform also enables converged revenue management scenarios; support for VoLTE, virtualized, 5G and IoT services; deployment flexibility across any physical and virtual environment; and embedded analytics.

    YTL launches 4G LTE data, VoLTE services

    YTL Communications in Malaysia has deployed Elitecore’s Revenue and Customer Management (RCM) Platform to roll out its 4G LTE high speed data & VoLTE services.

    The platform will enable the operator to roll out new business models like, HD Voice (VoLTE), Enterprise LTE and LTE Roaming, in addition to the Double Double buckets, one for wireless broadband and another for mobile internet, VoLTE and data services bundled with devices.

    YTL Communications said it is the only operator in Asia Pacific to commercially launch nationwide Voice over LTE (VoLTE) services.

    Elitecore’s NFV ready and Virtualized platform comprises of integrated policy and charging, 3GPP AAA, convergent billing, fulfillment, mobile self-care catering to voice, data and VAS services supporting multiple networks such as LTE, Wi-Fi and Wimax.

    “Elitecore’s product roadmap alignment with YTL’s business vision and proven experience in convergent billing and integrated policy and charging supports our growth strategy and helped us migrate from our legacy billing and operational support systems,” said Ali Tabassi, COO of YTL Communications. “The platform offers high agility for faster time-to-market and feature rich functionalities.”

    AIS, Dtac enable cross-network VoLTE calls

    In a first for the Asean region, Thai operators AIS and Dtac have teamed up to facilitate cross-network VoLTE calls.

    The operators enabled AIS-Dtac VoLTE calls last week and plans to implement cross-network 4G video calls from Tuesday.

    Cross-network VoLTE calls are being made available to both prepaid and postpaid customers at no additional cost.

    While each of Thailand’s top three mobile operators – AIS, Dtac and True Corp – recently launched VoLTE, the functionality had previously only been available for within-network calls.

    Industry watchers believe the move may be an attempt by market leaders AIS and Dtac to fend off competition from fast-growing challenger True Corp. But the Nation quotes True Corp’s chief commercial officer Kittinut Tikawan as stating that the company is confident it can negotiate simila deals with both AIS and Dtac.

    The move will also pave the way for the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus in Thailand later this month.

    Optus commences rollout of VoLTE

    Australia’s Optus has commenced the rollout of VoLTE technology to Australia’s major capital cities.

    The Singtel subsidiary revealed that its initial rollout will concentrate on the central business district metro areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra.

    Optus will initially offer VoLTE over Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge smartphones.

    Optus managing director Dennis Wong said the company plans to “continue to add capability to other devices and remains focused on expanding our VoLTE footprint to further locations, particularly in regional Australia.”

    “We’ve been testing and tweaking VoLTE for the best customer experience and we’re excited Optus customers will start to see the benefits of this technology on our 4G Plus network.”

    Last year the operator launched the first commercial 3x LTE-A carrier aggregation network combining one FDD carrier with two TDD blocks. The network combines 1800-MHz and 2300-MHz frequency bands.

    Optus is Australia’s second largest operator after incumbent Telstra, offering both fixed and mobile services as well as satellite and other services.

    Huawei, Telkomsel trial Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE based on NFV

    Huawei Technologies said Telkomsel, a telecom operator in Indonesia, has demonstrated its 4G convergent communication service trial for Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE (Voice over LTE) based on NFV technology (Network Function Virtualization) in Jakarta.

    Wi-Fi calling and VoLTE will enable Indonesia’s 280 million mobile users to experiences HD voice and HD video within the shortest connecting time. When a subscriber switches between 4G and Wi-Fi environment, the call will not be interrupted.

    “This Wi-Fi Calling and VoLTE trial is part of our efforts to provide better service quality, and will also create an exciting new experience for customers in using our services,” said Ivan Permana, vice president, Technology & System, Telkomsel.
