    • Safe Disconnect enables you to use the internet only when the VPN is active.
    • App Bypass allows you to choose specific apps to use a standard connection rather than the VPN.
    • Snooze allows you to disable your VPN temporarily.

    In addition to these new features, Google has also made its VPN service available on iOS, which means that users can now use Google’s VPN on an iPhone as well. But sadly, the new features mentioned above may not be accessible on an iPhone at this time.

    According to Google’s blog post, privacy and security are ‘always core to everything’ Google makes. In this regard, Google’s VPN utilizes ‘advanced’ built-in security, which prevents anybody from linking you to your browsing activity.

    Google also stated that its VPN service has a ‘full certification’ from the Internet of Secure Things Alliance, and because it is an open-source service, it has been audited by an independent party.     Google’s VPN service is available only in 18 countries. Some of them are the US, Canada, the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy, France.

These perks are also available in the higher tiers for higher prices. If someone is sitting in a Starbucks, using the free Wi-Fi to send work emails or to play Call of Duty: Mobile, they can rest assured the VPN will protect them.

    Google has had a VPN-enabled system for a while now: Google Fi. This is their carrier service. How it works is that a user’s phone, in the United States and if it’s designed for Fi, will be able to connect to T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular towers, switching between them for whichever offers the best signal. Additionally, the device will constantly be looking for available Wi-Fi. It has a database of reliable networks which it will prefer, but it will connect whether the Wi-Fi is known or not. Enter the VPN. When connecting to Wi-Fi, it will automatically run it through Google’s VPN, ensuring their safety.

    Mainstream release?

    The Google cloud-storage VPN must be enabled. It isn’t like the Google Fi VPN which is automatically running when it connects to Wi-Fi. There is a separation. Everything is ready for a wider release.

    Google are treating the cloud-storage VPN as part of the process of rolling out into the more mainstream market. Subscribers are guinea pigs. Or, as the market is quite competitive at the moment – even if it’s lucrative – Google might be keeping it simple and exclusive, using VPNs as an added incentive to use their cloud storage services.

    Google do, however, have a business security option but isn’t a VPN – though it is something similar.

    Business Security

    In the 1990s, the original VPN technology wasn’t developed with wider use in mind. It was for businesses. They wanted their different offices spread over countries or continents to be able to access their company’s data and share files securely. As such, it was imperative to secure the connection between various terminals, as opposed to the terminals (which is what anti-virus attempts to achieve).

    Google has developed this business-use VPN technology further, without the need for a VPN itself. It’s called BeyondCorp Remote Access. It offers exactly the same service as a VPN, in that employees from untrusted networks can access their company’s sensitive data securely. Sunil Potti and Sampath Srinvias wrote in a blog post how VPNs, for businesses and organizations, might increase risk because it increases their network perimeter and assumes everyone with it can be trusted. However, their new system enables policies to be set and, therefore, access can be better managed.

    Google will always be – either through in-house innovation or acquisitions – on the forefront of technological development. As for its market interests, they might look at the business, VPN-less, remote access market as something which is better suited to their long-term goals.

    Cisco announces $5b financing for operators’ 5G transition

    Cisco announced that it is planning to fork out $5 billion funding over the next three years to help its customers for network transitions to 5G. Cisco said “the 5G movement is in steep ascent and service providers face significant financing pressures as they prepare for this 5G revolution.”

    Cisco’s recent Mobile VNI Forecast shows that by 2022, the average 5G connection (22 GB/month) will generate nearly three times more traffic on the networks than the average 4G connection (8 GB/month).

    Service providers must expand their networks to support this growth. At the same time, they must invest in new 5G services to stay competitive, the vendor said in a statement. Cisco said it is planning to commit $5 billion in 5G funding via Cisco financing over the next three years to help its customers succeed with their network transitions to 5G.

    Meanwhile, Cisco has also announced a raft of announcements with Asian mobile carriers including Bharti Airtel, KT, Softbank and Rakuten

    Cisco is helping Bharti Airtel to build India’s largest 5G-ready, IP-based automated network. Airtel aims to deliver enhanced subscriber experiences and offer high-speed mobile access for its mobile customers in the country.

    Airtel’s IP-based network architecture will enable new functionality, including segment routing, traffic engineering and Ethernet VPN that helps ensure seamless interoperability and the ability to leverage existing investments in its MPLS-TP network. The automated IP network architecture will also give Airtel the ability to enhance its services to SMBs and enterprises.

    The deal with KT will see Cisco transitioning KT’s network architecture to better manage 5G traffic with advanced routing and automation software, intelligent analytics and machine learning.

    The network includes a 5G routing backbone with Cisco Network Convergence System Router 6000 and ACI on Nexus 9000 switching platform at KT’s distributed data centers in the country.

    In Japan, Cisco is helping SoftBank to deploy Segment Routing IPv6 (SRv6) in its 5G mobile network to help the Japanese telco reduce capex and opex. It is also helping Rakuten Mobile Network to launch the world’s first virtualized, cloud native mobile network by October 2019.

    Cisco is also using the MWC2019 to unveil a host of products and services covering 5G, WiFi 6, smart city and connected cars.

    Airtel taps Ciena for high-speed backbone network

    India’s Bharti Airtel has contracted Ciena to deploy a large-scale photonic control plane backbone network that will connect more than 4,000 towns across the nation.

    Under the agreement, announced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the companies will collaborate to deploy a network spanning 130,000km.

    The network deployment, which the companies said will be one of the world’s largest photonic control plane deployments, forms part of Airtel’s Project Leap network transformation program.

    Airtel plans to use the network to serve exploding demand for high-speed data services, and to enable the delivery of high-speed broadband to end users over 4G/5G/FTTH architectures.

    For retail and enterprise customers, the network will also support bandwidth on demand, optical VPNs, latency based routing and dynamic data center interconnection.

    Airtel CTO Randeep Sekhon said the backbone architecture will be capable of working with data rates of 400Gbps and higher, and delivering low-latency software-controlled connectivity for cloud infrastructure.

    “Airtel has always pioneered the introduction of cutting-edge network technologies to serve its customers. We are pleased to work with Ciena to build one of world’s largest optical spine and leaf networks, which is also a big step towards 5G readiness by leveraging our huge fiber assets,” he said.

    “This will not only scale our network for massive capacity but also protect traffic and enhance service delivery to all our customers. It will also help Airtel further strengthen its position as a key enabler of digital experiences in an increasingly connected world.”

    China has reportedly instructed the nation’s operators to bar their customers from accessing the internet via VPNs by February in the latest move to tighten controls over internet access.

    State-run operators China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom have been ordered to bar their customers from using VPNs to skirt censorship restrictions, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter.

    The government is reportedly moving to remove loopholes enabling internet users to circumvent the so-called Great Firewall of China, the system that blocks access to a range of information sources including foreign social media and news websites.

    Many businesses also use VPNs to view restricted websites, and it is unclear how the new directive will affect multinationals operating within the country.

    If the clampdown is extended to businesses it could potentially discourage businesses from operating in China or even convince them to move their local operations, the report states. But the restrictions seem to be aimed mainly at individual consumers.

    If the restrictions are extended to businesses, it will add to the new regulatory burdens due to be introduced with China’s new Cybersecurity Law, which imposes strict restrictions on the transfer of data overseas for businesses operating in China.

    Huawei has launched a new service which it says can resolve problems in enterprise leased line services that have affected telecoms operators, such as slow provisioning, lack of services, and difficult operation.

    According to Huawei, the CloudVPN Integration Service Solution can quickly meet the customized ICT needs of enterprise and enable operators to boost enterprise revenue by delivering a variety of value-added services.

    “A lot of operators are starting to think how to carry out CloudVPN business to market for their customers. But when they started this journey, they faced a lot of challenge,” said Bruce Xun, vice president of Global Technical Services Department at Huawei.

    By integrating a variety of value-added services, combining cloud, leased line, and value-added services, operators can provide one-stop CloudVPN for their enterprise customers, Xun noted.

    The CloudVPN Integration Service provides accurate network planning, helping carriers reduce time to market for new services over the overlay network architecture. Multi-vendor ICT resource orchestration allows enterprises to use cloud and network resources on demand and in real time, shortening the services provisioning time to minutes.

    Operators can reduce service delivery time from a month to 15 minutes with the CloudVPN Integration Service solution.

    The solution can meanwhile accurately identify the network bandwidth bottlenecks based on enterprise service prospects, optimizing networks accordingly to ensure services quality.

    At the launch, Huawei also announced it completed integration and certification with 20 ecosystem partners, including Fortinet, Check Point, Citrix, Red Hat, Riverbed and Infoblox, via its Cloud Open Labs. The company aims to expand the number of partners to 30 by the end of the year.

    Xun said Huawei’s Cloud Open Labs gives operators access to a range of third-party value-added services that have been pre-integrated by its partners.

    The agile integration capability of the CloudVPN Integration Service solution allows operators to add new VAS in just seven days.

    Huawei is planning to enhance its multi-vendor integration tool by increasing the development and testing team with 60 more senior engineers to support multi-level multi-vendor integration tool development.

    The service is expected to be commercially available by the end of the year.

    Singtel and India’s Bharti Airtel have announced a strategic alliance to provide high-speed connectivity to global enterprises through a single IP VPN.

    The operators have combined their infrastructure into one network providing coverage to 325 cities through 370 points of presence in APAC, MEA, Europe and the US. This will form one of the largest IP VPNs worldwide.

    The network will support MPLS and high-bandwidth business applications including unified communications, video conferencing and SDN.

    A single helpdesk and a single integrated operations and maintenance system have been jointly developed to support the combined networking operations.

    “We believe joining forces this way makes total sense. By tapping on one another’s infrastructure assets we enhance each other’s capabilities,” Singtel Group Enterprise managing director of global enterprise business Lim Seng Kong said.

    “With its wide coverage of cities in India, this network paves the way for our international customers to enter into one of the world’s most vibrant economies. Conversely, this partnership also opens the door for Indian companies to expand abroad, supported by Singtel’s high quality IP VPN network in major business cities in Asia, Europe and the US.”

    He said the agreement will allow Singtel to strengthen its lead as the largest IP VPN provider in APAC with domestic data networks in Australia, India and Singapore.
