  • Google Wallet will soon allow users to digitize their workplace IDs

Google Wallet will soon allow users to digitize their workplace IDs

In June, Google announced a series of new features that would slowly make their way to the Google Wallet app to make it a more comprehensive digital wallet solution. Most of these features have already launched, and one in particular was quietly added in a recent Google Play Services update.

We are referring to the ability to add your workplace ID cards to the app, effectively eliminating the need to carry a physical ID or lanyard. This means that, unless your workplace insists that physical identification needs to be shown at all times, you may finally be able to leave your ID at home and use your phone to access your workplace facilities.

As spotted by Android Police, the addition of workplace ID card support is part of a flurry of recent additions to Google Wallet. In the past few months, Google has added support for government-issued IDs in new states, easier tap-to-pay systems for commuters, and support for sharing passes. You can also digitize all the unsupported documents and passes, like library cards and gym memberships.

This new capability is part of the Google Play Services app update to version 23.44 that began to roll out yesterday, as detailed in the app’s changelog. However, it doesn’t seem to have reached all users yet, not even those using the app’s beta version, which is now at version 23.44.14. Once rolled out, the feature will appear alongside the current options for adding a digital ID, such as a state driver’s license.

In its June announcement, Google never specified a rollout timeline for the workplace ID card support, except for “later this year.” Hopefully, this means that it should start reaching users soon, making it easier for them to set up digital IDs for reliable use.
  • Alternative payments move mainstream in India

Alternative payments move mainstream in India

Alternative payments have moved mainstream in India amid Covid-19, according to GlobalData.

Payment platforms such as mobile and digital wallets have gained popularity among online shoppers, gradually replacing traditional payments during the pandemic.

“The adoption of alternative payments has been on the rise since demonetization in 2016,” said Ravi Sharma, lead banking and payments analyst at GlobalData. “The recent Covid-19 outbreak has further accelerated the usage of alternative payments as consumers are increasingly using electronic payments to avoid exposing themselves to disease vectors while merchants are also insisting on the digital mode of payments.”

GlobalData’s 2020 Banking & Payments Survey found that the share of alternative payments in online transactions in India stands at 54 percent this year, followed by payment cards and cash, which accounted for 30.1 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively.

Google Pay has been one of the beneficiaries with 9.3 percent share in the e-commerce payments, a significant surge from 3.5 percent share last year.

“While alternative payment tools were initially available for online payments, they are now being used for in-store payments as well,” Sharma said.

“With merchants increasingly opting for QR code-based payments due to their cost-effectiveness, alternative payments will disrupt the country’s overall consumer payments space in a big way.”

  • Google Pay is catching up with Apple Pay

Google Pay is catching up with Apple Pay

Google’s proprietary digital wallet service has done a pretty good job of keeping up with Apple Pay over the last year or so in terms of both US availability and international expansions, frequently spreading its wings to new banks, as well as major retailers like Target.

Before long, Google Pay will also catch up with its arch-rival as far as eBay support is concerned, according to an official announcement issued earlier today. After relying almost entirely on PayPal for payment processing on its extensive e-commerce platform, eBay started a transition in 2018 that’s scheduled to be completed by 2021. The eventual goal is to manage transactions on its own with the help of a lesser-known company called Adyen.

From customers’ perspective, this gradual move seems to be improving the flexibility of the shopping experience, which is certainly a welcomed change. Apple Pay already joined eBay’s list of PayPal alternatives several months back, with Google Pay availability set to be offered to Android users “starting in early April.” To complete an eBay purchase using the search giant’s digital wallet app, you’ll need to shop from a seller enrolled in this new “payments experience”, and something tells us that will only include a small piece of the huge marketplace to begin with.

But rest assured, as eBay plans to make both Google Pay and Apple Pay “increasingly available to shoppers as the program grows to process more volume in additional geographies.” And if you prefer the “classic” e-shopping experience, you have no reason to fret either, as PayPal is not going anywhere. Not today and not in 2021. eBay is simply branching out, offering customers more payment options on their end, from Android and iOS devices, as well as computers running all sorts of operating systems.
