Bondi Sands expands presence on US shores with Walmart launch

Australian tanning brand Bondi Sands is expanding its presence in the US market with a nationwide launch in Walmart. This partnership represents the eighth major US retailer to list the brand’s product range within the past six years.

Walmart will make eight of Bondi Sand’s bestsellers available – in-store and online – including the Self Tanning Foam, Self Tanning Foam 1-Hour Express, Everyday Gradual Tanning Milk, and Self Tan Eraser.

Through this expansion, the company said it aims to make salon-quality, affordable, vegan, and cruelty-free tanning products accessible to a broader audience.

“We are thrilled to cultivate a new relationship with Walmart and introduce our self-tanning range to a new category of shoppers,” said Blair James, co-founder of Bondi Sands.

“Propelling our global presence with Walmart is an unmatched growth opportunity for us, and we’re excited to offer the beauty consumer what they’re looking for – salon quality tanning products at an affordable price.”

Established in 2012, Bondi Sands offers a range of self-tanning and suncare products.

  • Walmart now lets you try clothes on a virtual model of you by using only your iPhone

Walmart now lets you try clothes on a virtual model of you by using only your iPhone

It’s very convenient to buy clothes online. However, there’s always the risk of not liking how the apparel looks on you when you try it at home. And when this happens, then the whole online shopping thing becomes a hassle. But what if you could see how the new t-shirt you are so eager to buy will look on you before ordering it?

Well, it appears that Walmart now offers a way for you to try your potential purchases online and then decide whether you will add them to your cart. As the company announced in a new press release, the Walmart app on iOS now offers a “Be Your Own Model” feature, allowing you to try clothes on a virtual model of you created from a photo of yours.

To do this, tap the “Try It On” button and then choose the “Be Your Own Model” option. The first time, you will be prompted to take a picture of yourself within the Walmart app and input your height. After that, you will see an image of you wearing the item.

You could argue that the system just slaps images of clothes on your picture and that there is nothing special about it, but according to Walmart, its technology uses algorithms and AI, which was originally created for designing highly accurate topographic maps. The company stated that, with Be Your Own Model, you see an “ultra-realistic simulation” with shadows and fabric draping, including where your desired clothing falls on your virtual body.

Walmart also shared that more than 270,000 items across the retailer’s portfolio now support the virtual try-on feature. The company also stated that Be Your Own Model will soon be available on Android and Desktop as well.

In 2021, Walmart acquired Zeekit, a company developing a virtual fitting room platform. And earlier this year, it introduced the try-on feature, but up until now, you could use it only with a virtual model that resembled you the most.

  • Walmart cuts back ammunition sales

    Walmart cuts back ammunition sales

US department store chain Walmart has taken a stand on gun sales in the United States, announcing it will no longer sell handgun and certain rifle ammunition, as well as finalizing its exit from handgun sales by discontinuing sales in Alaska.

The decision comes after 22 people were killed in a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, as well as further killings in Dayton, Ohio, and Midland and Odessa, Texas, with Walmart chief executive Doug McMillion stating it was clear the status quo was unacceptable.

“We know these decisions will inconvenience some of our customers, and we hope they will understand,” McMillion wrote in a letter to associates.

“Our remaining assortment will be even more focused on the needs of hunting and sport shooting enthusiasts. It will include long barrel deer rifles and shotguns, much of the ammunition they require, as well as hunting and sport accessories and apparel.”

While Walmart’s short-barrel rifle ammunition range is more commonly used in hunting rifles, it can be fed into larger capacity clips for use in military-style weapons.

According to McMillion, the follow on effect of this decision would likely result in a loss of market share in the ammunition space, from Walmart’s current 20 percent to approximately 6 to 9 percent.

McMillion also expressed intentions to send letters to the White House and the Congressional leadership, pushing for stronger background checks, and to remove weapons from those who have been determined to be dangerous.

“As we’ve seen before, these horrific events occur and then the spotlight fades. We should not allow that to open,” McMillion said.

“In a complex situation lacking a simple solution, we are trying to take constructive steps to reduce the risk that events like these happen again.”

Additionally, after open carrying customers brandished firearms in a way that frightened or concerned staff and customers around them, McMillion has asked customers to no longer openly carry firearms into Walmarts and Sam’s Club stores with open carry laws – unless they are authorized law enforcement officers.

“We believe the opportunity for someone to misinterpret a situation, even in open carry states, could lead to tragic results,” McMillion said.

“We hope that everyone will understand the circumstances that led to this new policy and will respect the concerns of their fellow shoppers and our associates.”

The business has faced immense pressure to take a stand on the issue, and remove firearms from its physical stores, following the El Paso shooting.

According to CNN Business several presidential candidates, the American Federation of Teachers, as well as gun safety groups have all pressed the retailer.

  • Walmart China to invest US$1.2 billion in supply chain logistics

Walmart China to invest US$1.2 billion in supply chain logistics

Walmart China plans to increase investment in its supply-chain logistics by about US$1.2 billion, building or upgrading more than 10 logistics distribution centres over the next 10 to 20 years.

In March, Walmart completed its first customised perishable-food distribution centre, the South China Fresh Food Distribution Center, serving more than 100 stores in Guangdong and Guangxi, with daily distributing capacity of up to 165,000 cases of products. That centre cost RMB 700 million (US$101.6 million) to complete.

This is Walmart China’s first distribution centre specially designed and built according to leading international standards – it was the first facility in Mainland China to pass the Brand Reputation through Compliance (BRCGS) Warehousing and Distribution Global Standard Certification. At 33,700sqm, it is the largest, multi-temperature perishable distribution centre in the domestic retail industry, capable of storing and processing more than 4000 kinds of temperature-regulated, refrigerated or frozen goods simultaneously.

Ryan McDaniel, senior VP of Walmart China Supply Chain, says opening the South China Fresh Food Distribution Center increased the cold-chain storage area serving Guangdong and Guangxi to meet the ever-growing customer demand for fresh goods.

Other innovations include a scattered-sorting solution that provides the flexible distribution needed by community stores, and streamlining processes to reduce inventory during trial operations, saving about 50 per cent of space and improving efficiency by nearly 300 per cent.

The new centre is configured with advanced temperature-control hardware. The cold storage in the reservoir area is designed to control temperature variables in the receiving and delivery area by using a combination of highly sealed doors, and saves more than 330,000 kilowatt-hours per year.

In the transportation stage of the cold chain, Walmart requires that goods be cooled before they are loaded into temperature-regulated trucks. The pre-cooling temperature is then checked by a “transportation monitoring system” and the container is only loaded once the temperature meets the set level. All shipping vehicles that serve Walmart have devices onboard that monitor the temperature in the vehicle along the delivery route to ensure that the fresh produce is protected and arrives at the store on time.

Walmart says it also allocates quality inspection personnel at the distribution centre to increase compliance and safeguard the quality and safety of food products. A quality testing laboratory has been set up in the distribution centre to conduct front-line inspections on issues like food legal and regulatory compliance and agricultural pesticide residues. The data from these tests is shared with all stores nationwide.

Last year, Walmart China’s dry warehouses and fresh-food distribution centres dispatched more than 300,000 vehicles to its stores, chalking up more than 80 million kilometres of driving distance and delivering more than 1 million boxes of goods per day.

  • Walmart Hires robots to handle cleaning and unboxing

Walmart Hires robots to handle cleaning and unboxing

US retailer Walmart is adding thousands of robots to its stores to handle cleaning tasks, allowing workers more time to help customers.

Walmart said by February 2019, it will have introduced the 920-pound autonomous floor scrubbers at 1,860 of its 4,700 US stores.

The robots will clean the floors and unload boxes in its stockrooms. The “smart assistants” can scan shelf inventory at 350 stores and bots will be placed at 1,700 stores to automatically scan boxes as delivery trucks drop them off and they are sorted onto conveyor belts.

“The overall trend we’re seeing is that automating certain tasks gives associates more time to do work they find fulfilling and to interact with our customers,” CEO Doug McMillon told of the new technology last year.

Walmart is hoping that the bot army will increase sales and in-store efficiency. The retailer said it’s quite difficult to find workers to work overnight to receive the supplies from trucks.

“We’re seeing increases in sales and reductions in turnover in what had been a very difficult job to fill,” CEO McMillon told.

    Walmart goes high tech

Last year Walmart invested over US$2 billion to remodel stores around the country and improve online shopping services for its new in-store pickup feature. Walmart said on Tuesday that it would bring 16-foot-tall automated vending machines to 900 new stores this year to quickly fetch customers’ online orders.

“There is a labor shortage in retail. It will not be easy for Walmart to add labor to perform these functions. So a high level of automation is required,” said Kirthi Kalyanam, director of the Retail Management Institute at Santa Clara University told.

Earlier this month the retailer announced a partnership with Google on the new Walmart Voice Order which allows shoppers to order groceries through Google Assistant.

Walmart India head likely to meet Sitharaman

Under pressure from the US, the government might again be compelled to review the foreign direct investment (FDI) policy in multi-brand retail trading (MBRT). At the forefront is American retail giant Walmart, demonstrating a renewed interest in entering India’s fast growing retail market, estimated at USD600 billion. Currently, Walmart operates 20 cash-and-carry or wholesale stores in the country, for which there’s no foreign investment cap.
