AS Watson, a Hong Kong-based health and beauty retailer, is potentially planning a move into the Australian market. The company is believed to be considering an acquisition of over 90 pharmacies in Australia.

    Expansion into Australia

The company’s interest is reportedly focused on 92 Priceline pharmacies, previously under the operation of Infinity Pharmacy Group. This move will represent AS Watson’s debut into the Australian market. The company is said to be planning a comprehensive review of these pharmacies, which indicates serious intent towards the acquisition.

It is suggested that executives from AS Watson had visited Australia several years prior and had discussions with the founding partner of Infinity. AS Watson injects US$115 million into its O+O experience

“We are mindful that digital transformation is not just about how much investment we put in technology or how many more digital devices we put in the stores,” said Manila Ngai, group COO of AS Watson Group and CEO of AS Watson Asia and Europe.

“It is also about a genuine revolution in the organisation culture – the way we think, the way we work, and the way we communicate and serve our customers.”

The investment comes after the brand expanded its ‘TechLab’ experience centre in Shenzhen, alongside its existing centre in the Netherlands. The centre features shopping technology such as unmanned stores, smart shelves, interactive games and facial recognition.

“Retail is evolving very quickly. What took a decade to develop in the past would now happen in two years,” Ngai added.

“Therefore, we need to build agility in the organisation, and to empower our people with data insights in real-time, cloud-based dashboards is key to fast and smart decision making. O+O continues to be AS Watson’s core strategy and technology is the critical engine for future growth.”

Watsons and L’Oreal launch Hong Kong-wide recycling program

L’Oreal Hong Kong has partnered with Watsons and recycling social enterprise V Cycle to launch the recycling program ‘Beauty for the Future’.

The campaign aims to encourage customers to recycle their empty cosmetics and skincare containers – from any brand – at Watsons stores.

Customers can hand over their washed beauty containers including foundation bottles, mascara wands, skincare tubs, and lipstick tubes, at any Watsons store in Hong Kong in exchange for rewards on the platform MoneyBack.

People can also return the empties to any of L’Oreal Hong Kong’s more than 100 free-standing outlets or department store counters. V Cycle will break down the wastes, sort them by material, and work with local partners to turn them into new raw materials once they’ve been gathered.

The scaled-up campaign’s target is to collect 250,000 containers in the year following the formal launch – equal to the height of two Mount Everests when piled.

“Our goal is to meet it head-on with the first cross-brand recycling programme involving 18 of our beauty brands in 2021,” said Eva Yu, president & MD of L’Oreal Hong Kong.

“With the scaled-up recycling campaign as part of our ‘L’Oreal for the Future’ sustainability program, we want to further inspire and influence how our consumers think and what they do about packaging wastes – not as something to toss out, but as a resource that can be recycled and used again, and sustainably, reducing the impact on our environment. Our partnership with Watsons and V Cycle will help make this a reality.”

L’Oreal Hong Kong and Watsons have collected over 6300 beauty containers and diverted them from landfills during the trial program launched between April to May.

  • Watsons creates Sustainable Choices category with new products

Watsons creates Sustainable Choices category with new products

Surging consumer demand for sustainable products has prompted Hong Kong-headquartered health & beauty retailer Watsons to aggregate more than 1600 products into a Sustainable Choices category available both in physical stores and online.

A trial curation of sustainable products earlier this year saw sales of some products increase by 300 percent.

“This indicates clearly that customers are looking for sustainable products, hence it’s our mission to make them available and easy to browse for,” said AS Watson CEO for Asia and Europe, Malina Ngai.

“Many customers started to rethink their priorities due to the pandemic and they’re very much aware of the impact their choices have on the environment and society. We’ve been working closely with our strategic supplier partners to offer a wide range of Sustainable Choices products – everything from skincare to shampoo – making it easier for customers to make purchase decisions that contribute to a better world for all.”

Brand Partners in the initiative include Beiersdorf, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Kao, L’Oreal, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt, Shiseido, and Unilever.

The products are ranged in a dedicated Sustainable Choices section in stores and online. AS Watson told Inside Retail that the 1600+ products fit into one of four “pillars”: Clean Beauty, Refill, Better Ingredients, and Better Packaging.

A Clean Beauty brand is recognized by Watsons for using ingredients consumers trust will protect you, with additional environmental benefits and which support the local community.

In the refill pillar, products come with refill packs or in-store refilling stations to enable customers to keep using the original container.

Better Ingredients means the products’ manufacturers have chosen sustainable options in paper, sourced palm oil from “responsibly managed plantations” or have reduced plastic content in non-formulated products.

For Better Packaging, manufacturers must have chosen “better plastic” – such as recycled plastics – or a paper that has been sustainably sourced.

AS Watson has signed up to the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to reduce plastic waste and has taken group membership of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil to help address the environmental impact of palm oil sourcing.

“We want to build a sustainable mindset and behavior together with our customers in their daily personal care and beauty needs. It’s the start of an exciting journey of a three-way partnership with our strategic supplier partners and our customers to make an impact,” said Ngai.

“The initial customer response is hugely encouraging, and we’re sure our customers will love our wider range of sustainable products.”

Meanwhile, Procter & Gamble has partnered with Watsons Hong Kong in a three-year commitment to reward customers with free gifts in return for bringing in empty personal-care plastic bottles from any brand for recycling. This program, called Plastic Reborn has already led to the recycling of 3400kg of plastic since February.

At Watsons Thailand stores, customers can recycle PET plastic bottles at a Garnier Refun Machine, earning a free Garnier Pink Micellar Water in return.

Improving customer wellness is also one of Watsons’ key initiatives. • My Japanese Beauty Fantasy launched with Watsons

My Japanese Beauty Fantasy launched with Watsons

Japanese cosmetics & personal care brands Anessa, Senka, and Tsubaki have partnered with Watsons Singapore to launch a My Japanese Beauty pop-up store in Orchard Road.

The three Shiseido brands are hosting the store from September 20 to October 20 at a location just outside Takashimaya as an educational and experiential event that invites the public to discover the secrets of Japanese beauty on a multi-sensorial journey.

The pop-up brings to life Shiseido’s heritage and showcases the three brands. Visitors will discover eight historical products, all Shiseido Museum artifacts flown out of Japan for the first time with special escort and white-gloved treatment. Highlights include first-generation products such as Tsubaki’s Classic Shampoo and Conditioner, Anessa’s Sunscreen Milk, and Senka’s Perfect Whip.

Adding an immersive element into the event are high-tech digital touchpoints that are triggered by footsteps to deliver sound, music, and animation. Guests will also be introduced to customized collagen tea and interactive product-discovery experiences. Guiding them along the way is a pop-up experience microsite, accessible via the Watsons app/website or a QR code. The seamlessly integrated platform enables them to navigate the space like a museum and offers tasks for them to complete. It is also an offline-to-online shopping app that allows users to scan QR codes to read product descriptions and add items to their carts. After checking out online, Watsons will deliver their shopping to them within the next few days. If guests prefer buying on the spot, they may also purchase products from a cashless vending machine or at an on-site store.

Watsons Singapore is Shiseido Singapore’s “strongest supporter and top local beauty retailer” according to a statement released by the group.

  • Protests take their toll on Watsons outlets

Protests take their toll on Watsons outlets

Sales by Watsons stores located in areas affected by ongoing street protests have fallen markedly in both June and July. The protests have been ongoing since early June, largely confined to the island suburbs of Admiralty, Wan Chai and Causeway Bay.

“Month-to-date July our sales have fallen by a double-digit [percentage] from the same period last year,” the chain’s MD Diane Cheung said during the launch of a diagnostic service at a Hong Kong store yesterday.

“That said, last year’s comparison base was relatively high and given we achieved favorable first-half sales and that we expect openings of new and renovated stores in the second half, we believe we will fare better than the entire retail market for the full year.”

Cheung said other factors were also impacting on the group’s sales, a reference to the changing demographics of mainland visitors and general economic uncertainty fuelled by the ongoing trade war between the US and China. However, Watsons stores located in the districts where most of the protests have occurred were worst affected.

The Hong Kong Retail Management Association warned of the impact the protests were having on some of its members earlier this month.

“Large-scale parade activities have caused individual stores to suspend business. Not only are the retail companies under pressure, so is the income of store employees,” the organization said in a prepared statement.

AS Watson expects to open a net 20 new Watsons stores in Hong Kong by the end of this year, taking its network to 260. Globally the group opens a new store on average every seven hours.

  • Omnichannel key to AS Watson Group success

Omnichannel key to AS Watson Group success

Don’t mention the so-called ‘Retail Apocalypse’ to AS Watson Group MD Dominic Lai.

An ardent enthusiast in new-generation retail technology, he heads a company that has just celebrated its 15,000th physical store opening. And that network expansion is showing no signs of slowing, with a new store opening on average every seven hours for the foreseeable future.

“A few years ago, technology arrived and people said: That’s the end days for retail. But no, we never thought that,” Lai tells Inside Retail Asia during an interview outside the 15,000th milestone store, a Watsons health & beauty shop in the new Central I-City mall in suburban Kuala Lumpur.

AS Watson Group is possibly one of the best examples worldwide of a retailer successfully merging online and offline in a way that is achieving growth in both sales and profit. Revenue was up 10 per cent last year and profit increased 9 per cent. “My shareholders expect even more,” he deadpans.

Embracing online and developing an O2O (online-to-offline) business model is the key to the company’s success, he says. It keeps his customers happy.

The company has invested some US$130 million in technology since 2012, to be sure to be competitive in the online era.

“We anticipated e-commerce. We anticipated big data. But we are not just about e-commerce. We have to connect our customers through digital, social media, mobile, everything. This is what we have done and we will continue to invest in technology. We are ready. Technology-wise, we are up to speed.”

At the heart of this O2O business model is click and collect, linking 13,000 stores to their localised e-commerce site. Most online retailers only offer click and deliver, but Watsons’ customers can browse its sites online at midnight and pick up in any of the stores the next morning.

The best part of this model is that the company has the opportunity to sell more goods to customers collecting their online purchases.

“The traffic comes straight to the store,” adds Malina Ngai, AS Watson Group COO. “So on average, 20 to 30 per cent of the shoppers will buy something else.” In some markets, like Taiwan, that rate grows as high as 52 per cent.

Moreover, As Watson data shows when its loyalty program members shop online and in store, their spending is on average three to four times higher than those who shop only in stores.

Ngai says the business model – combining physical stores with mobile, website and social media – sits well with the retailer’s core demographic. In Asia, 60 per cent of AS Watson Group’s customers are aged under 35. In China, that segment jumps to 80 per cent. “So you know you have to offer those digital options.”

The company’s loyalty program, with 135 million members worldwide, represents one of the largest of any retailer’s anywhere in the world. That provides a treasure chest of data, helping the company recognise and understand trends, assess the performance of different promotions, and personalise offers or other marketing communication. And it is clearly working: the health & beauty store network growth is running at 6 per cent, yet sales are growing at 9 per cent.

New store sites are chosen based on interpretation of customer spending both on and offline, using big data. They are typically staffed by people in the same age profile as its customers. “We have a lot of Gen Y and Gen Z staff,” says Lai. “Retail is detail and we look at every [way] how to connect with our customers.

In the years ahead, Lai’s vision for AS Watson Group is succinct: “We will continue to open new stores and at the same time we would like to get more members, more formats and make more investment in technology.”

He is unafraid of any economic downturn.

“Look at [our] business model. We sell essential products. We are not selling watches and jewellery, we are selling essentials. That’s why I use the word resilient to describe our business: we are resilient.”

AS Watson Group this year added Vietnam to its footprint, taking the number of countries and territories it trades in to 25. Lai says the company is always looking for new markets, but for now is more focused on expanding within the ones it is already in.

“We are international. We plan prudently. So we went into Vietnam because we realise the customers there already know our brand and the demographics – and the market entry strategy was to open the flagship and enable the online. That’s the process by which we look at the international market.”

Ngai points out that the 25 markets AS Watson Group already trades in represent 32 per cent of the world’s population, “and we only have 15,000 stores”.

“That is why we can still open one store every seven hours.”

With a new-store payback time of less than one year, that strategy is clearly working. “We open, the customers really love us and we get enough sales to get payback within one year.”

AS Watson has 12 retail brands across the globe, of which Watsons is by far the largest, with 7200 stores in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Turkey, Russia and Ukraine. Sales last year nudged US$22 billion. Across its banners, the company has some 20 different formats.

“Going forward we will be seeing more and more different models because it is about specialising the offer for the customer needs,” explains Ngai. “It may be [we serve] the same customer, but when the customer goes to a work area they just want to buy wellbeing products, so we have a Watsons Health; and in an area with a lot of young mothers we have a Watsons Baby store; and when they go back to the residential area and want to pick up personal-care products, we have a more regular Watsons store.”

Lai says the reason the company has been so successful over the years is its customer connectivity. And because it has embraced technology.

“We have even been quietly investing and developing our big data and analytical capabilities.

We have been using technology to identify sites to control our inventory, to connect with our customers, to do the assortment planning and space planning.

“I would like people to know that AS Watson Group is a very modern company, it is not just a retail company opening physical stores. We know how to reach young customers,” he says.

“We are one of the longest-standing companies in the world with 178 years of history. To be able to reach yet another critical milestone, this is only possible with the love from our customers, passion and commitment from our 140,000 colleagues around the world, and the unfailing support of our business partners.”
