  • What Are The Benefits Of Ergonomics In The Workplace?

What Are The Benefits Of Ergonomics In The Workplace?

There is no doubt about it, ergonomics are helping to create a safe and efficient work environment for employees in offices so that they can perform at their highest level without having to worry about any physical injury. The main reason behind the implementation of ergonomics is the basis of creating a safe and efficient work environment where employees feel like going every day.

Some people, however, still avoid ergonomics and the implementation of a workplace because they think that it is not worth spending so much to make sure that employees don’t suffer any physical injury. These people are clearly wrong because there is no reason to risk the health of your employees over a little investment. Read on more to find out the importance of ergonomics in the workplace and why ergonomics shouldn’t be ignored:

    Improved Health Of Employees

The main reason why ergonomic workplaces are designed is to improve the health of workers there. When employees work in a workstation where everything is comforting and beneficial for their health then they suffer fewer injuries. The major problem that people face while working in poor ergonomic workplaces is musculoskeletal disorders. Simply by improving the posture and maintaining the height of the chairs, you can see a 50% decrease in MSK disorders.

Similarly, ergonomic workstations include adjustable chairs so that you can work at a specific position where you won’t be putting strain and tension on your eyes or neck. It also prevents the development of varicose veins and swelling in the legs because ergonomic workstations are designed in such a way that your blood flow is optimal.

    Higher Productivity Levels

With an ergonomic workplace, your employees are better focused and they can work at higher productivity levels. By designing a workstation that is adjustable and allows for good posture, less force extortion, better reaches, and fewer motions, the employees are going to love it just as a board game lover loves the Word Unscrambler. An ergonomic workstation allows your employees to focus better which results in them having high levels of productivity.

For your business to be successful, it needs to have productivity. Just changing the workplace for your employees and making it better for them will make them feel more comfortable, and valued, and they will feel like giving their best, which is obviously in the interest of your business.

    Better Work Quality

If the place where employees work is not properly built and the workstation has poor ergonomics then it will lead to frustrated and fatigued workers who won’t be able to produce the best quality of work. Just because their workstation isn’t comfortable, the tools that they work with aren’t of high quality, they feel fatigued all the time due to which their work quality is affected.

Simply by improving the ergonomics of the workstation and providing the highest quality of tools to employees and workers, you can see the best quality of work from them.

    Eliminates Potential Work Hazards

Just as a person working in a lab wears a white coat, gloves, and safety goggles to protect himself against potential lab hazards, ergonomics in the workplace help to eliminate potential hazards. There are some unsafe distractions and daily hazards that can hurt your employees which can lead to serious consequences later on.

Simply by applying ergonomics in the workplace, eliminating hazards that you observe yourself, and asking employees about the hazards that they face daily, you will be not only improving their safety but also letting them know that you care about them.

    Increased Employee Engagement

When employees notice that their employer is making an effort to provide the best conditions possible to work and cares about their health and safety, they will feel like being a part of different business activities. Their interest in business activities will develop just as one’s interest in Scrabble develops after finding out about the Scrabble Word Finder

You will notice they will be more motivated to work every day and this will help to reduce the turnover rate and increase the loyalty of employees as they would prefer working in a safe and comfortable place.

    Happier Employees

Along with increased engagement, ergonomics also helps to produce happier employees. It all comes to you that how better are you able to utilize ergonomics in the office. The better you utilize ergonomics, the happier your employees will be. They will love coming to a workplace where they are able to work in a comfortable, distraction-free, and relaxing environment.

You will notice it yourself when you will see that the mood of every employee is lightened up. When your employees are happy then it means that good days are coming for your company as they will be performing their jobs at the highest levels.

  • Union calls out Noni B over workplace issues

Union calls out Noni B over workplace issues

The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association (SDA) says it has received numerous complaints from Noni B employees on a range of workplace issues, from cuts to part-time hours and take-home pay, to health and safety concerns, to consistent understaffing and pressure to meet unrealistic sales targets. The complaints follow the SDA’s refusal earlier this month to approve a proposed enterprise bargaining agreement that it had been negotiating with Noni B after the Fair Work Commission ordered the fashion chain to scrap its previous agreement by March 4.

That agreement, which expired in 2014, allowed staff at the recently acquired Specialty Fashion Group chains – including Autograph, Crossroads, Katies, Millers and Rivers – to be paid below the industry award, with no overtime, evening or weekend penalty rates. The SDA was on board with the proposed new agreement until Noni B declined to back pay employees and cut part-time hours by 20 per cent in the final days of the old agreement. Despite the fact that 81 per cent of employees who voted were in favour of the deal, the union has refused to sign it, which could prevent Fair Work from approving the proposed agreement.

A Noni B spokesperson told at the time that the move was “unprecedented”.The Retail and Fast Food Workers Union has also attempted to block the deal.

The SDA on Sunday said that Noni B’s decision to cut hours for part-time workers has placed excessive sales demands and work tasks on remaining staff, resulting in them being unable to take breaks to go to the bathroom.

“In some cases, this deliberate understaffing meant retail employees were at times left in stores alone and could not take toilet breaks or were forced to lift heavy boxes and work up ladders in an unsafe manner,” Gerard Dwyer, national secretary of the union for workers in retail, fast food and warehousing, said in a statement.

“The lack of staff has also resulted in masses of stock remaining unprocessed and being stacked in change rooms and blocking fire escapes, clearly in breach of WHS [workplace health and safety] laws.”

A spokesperson for Noni B, which also operates the Rockmans, W Lane, Beme and Table Eight chains, told IR it was “most unfortunate that the SDA has decided to wage its campaign through the media against Noni B Group’s enterprise agreement, which has been approved by 81 per cent of the group’s relevant employees.”

“The company has tried to arrange a meeting with the SDA to discuss its specific concerns, and a meeting arranged for last week was cancelled by the union. The safety and wellness of the group’s people are critical to the company and all concerns are investigated and where appropriate addressed,” the spokesperson said.

A further statement from Noni B Group is expected later today.

The SDA claims the company has attempted to force managers to sign “individual contracts” that could leave them worse off when compared with the Award, “depending on their rosters”.

“As a result of these multiple workplace breaches and some shortcomings in the proposal itself, the SDA has refused to approve the proposed Noni B enterprise bargaining agreement,” Dwyer said.

“The message is clear. It’s time for Noni B to clean up its act and to adhere to good workplace practices for its retail staff.”

  • SKT brings 5G workplace to life

SKT brings 5G workplace to life

ID cards, laptops and business trips will no longer be necessary, according to SK Telecom, when the 5G network-based smart office environment becomes an industry norm. The mobile carrier showcased its smart office technology test bed in Jongno District, central Seoul, Wednesday. Currently, about 300 SK Telecom employees are working at the space set up roughly a month ago by renting out three floors in the Centropolis building.

At the entrance to the office, SK Telecom has facial recognition technology manning the security desk. Due to privacy issues, only employees who have agreed to register their biometric information can pass through the gate without an ID card.

Inside the office, a display panel shows seat reservations. The screen shows all available seats inside the office, similar to the systems seen in university libraries and also shows who is in which seat. When designing the smart office, SK Telecom made it into an open space so employees can freely move around. The display even shows how many toilet cubicles are available for immediate use, although in this case employee names aren’t shown.

The carrier said it used roughly 2,300 sensors, including on the ceilings, CCTV and even doorknobs in the bathrooms that track relevant data on employees’ work patterns inside the office. The data collected will be used to develop smart office solutions packages for enterprise customers.

The desks in the office come with desktop computers connected to mobile routers that convert 5G signals into super-fast Wi-Fi. Beside the computer monitor is a docking station for smartphones. The so-called virtual desktop infrastructure enables employees to bring up what they were working on with their personal computers on the desktop computer using the cloud. Unlike simply mirroring a smartphone display, the phones become an authorization medium that allow the computer to verify which work files are downloaded from the cloud.

At one side of the office is a space for so-called telemeetings that could cut down the need for frequent business trips. SK Telecom said it used its “T real telepresence” technology to invite multiple users into a virtual space where participants can have meetings while watching videos or 3-D designs of game characters and buildings together.

After donning Microsoft’s HoloLens, this reporter was invited to a telemeeting to discuss the design of a game character.

Within the virtual meeting, attendees were able to see and walk around a moving 3-D game character while interacting with the avatars of other people in the meeting.

The experience wasn’t perfect – the field of view was small and constantly looking around was necessary in order to follow everything that was going on, but the potential of the technology to greatly reduce the need for business trips was evident.

Other technologies already being used in the office included a barista robot and artificial intelligence-based autonomous vending machine, which can track employee purchases with camera sensors.

Would any of these innovations be possible without 5G network?

According to SK Telecom, yes. But, while all of these technologies are possible on the existing 4G LTE network, the new high-speed network, touted to be 20 times faster when fully commercialized, offers faster and more stable internet connection even when a million devices are connected at once.

In essence, 5G ensures that all these systems work seamlessly without their huge data usage interrupting networks or slowing down work.

“Dependency on landline internet will be reduced and high-capacity data will be delivered fast enough for real-time telemeetings with 5G,” said Shin Seung-ho, a manager from SK Telecom’s media lab under ICT center.

  • 5 Tips for Digital Transformation

    5 Tips for Digital Transformation

Retailers know they need to evolve, even though they cannot do it overnight. But while there’s no silver bullet for transforming culture, collaboration, and workflows inside a large organization, there are steps you can take to make sure your business is receptive to the change it’s about to undergo.

    Understand performance goals

Before you start, you need to understand the business problem and the role that technology is going to play. Solving complex organizational issues needs the relentless management of changes in behavior, process, and technology all working together to support your performance goals and objectives.

    Collaboration is not a KPI

Decide how you’re going to measure your KPIs. And remember that collaboration is not a KPI – it’s a means to an end. KPIs could include customer satisfaction, getting products to store faster, selling more products per visit, or retention. You need to get down to that granular detail.

    Shut things off

If you have an existing tool which people did not like and you invest in something new to overcome those challenges and frustrations, you need to have a path to turning that tool off or at least turning off the elements that are now conflicting. This will impact adoption of new tools and ways of working.

    Educate, educate, educate

Launching a tool is the easy part, the real work begins when people use it. People need to be educated on what they should be using it for. Show some examples of what ‘good’ looks like, and also what the tool should not be used for. Design an internal marketing campaign and treat it exactly the same as an external campaign. A product-driven approach could help here. Think about how companies try to refresh products in the market over time to improve adoption.

    Put somebody in charge

For any system, and especially for a collaborative experience, you need someone who can get employees to use the tool in the right way at different times. That might be a community manager who understands the business cycle. Putting up content is the single most important driver of getting people to use the platform and to entice them to contribute their own.

  • Miroglio and Workplace keep collaboration in fashion

Miroglio and Workplace keep collaboration in fashion

Miroglio Fashion is the women’s clothing arm of Miroglio Group – a 71-year-old Italian conglomerate operating in 22 countries. The group joined Workplace in 2016. Since then, says CEO Hans Hoegstedt, it has “revolutionized our way of working.” “Over the last few years, the role of the CEO has changed. It is crucial for a CEO today to create culture, to remove filters and blockers so there can be a transparent and constructive dialogue between everyone. I was confident that Workplace was a platform that would help us achieve this,” he explains.

“We chose Workplace because everyone in the company knows how to use Facebook. And they just instinctively ‘got it’. Right from the first day, people began to spontaneously interact with each other in a genuine way with no training required. We launched Workplace at our annual convention two years ago. Over 1,100 stores in our various brands swung into action along with the head office. We set up all the Workplace groups that we use for various parts of the business, like visual merchandising, product, innovation, communication and so on”.

The result was instant. Within a short space of time, barriers and distances disappeared. People who had found it difficult to make themselves heard by head office suddenly had a direct, filter-free channel. It has given the company a more innovative and efficient way of working.

“A clear example is the visual merchandising team. Before Workplace, the team would create a model window and send it out to all the stores by email. With Workplace, the VM team now posts the image of the model window into a group. All the shops reply with their versions, comments, and suggestions. The VM team then provides instant feedback for the stores.

This allows to have hundreds of examples of how to dress the window instead of just one, and people can take ideas and inspiration from the others. There is a better dialogue and smarter collaboration that results in better window displays.

Hoegstedt continues “There are functions we did not use at the outset that have now become core features for us. Auto Translate was crucial when we extended the platform to our colleagues in Russia. Everyone posts in their own language and Workplace auto translates. Simple and effective. It’s a powerful way to create a vast international network, and we’ll be relying on the translations as we deploy Workplace in Romania, Spain, and France. We also now use Live Video whenever we present a new collection”.

“For me, as a CEO, it is also a way of ‘taking the pulse’ of the company. Of getting a quick sense of how people are feeling. It’s a kind of mass collective intelligence.”

From frontline to back office to HQ, Workplace connects entire retail organisations so they can share, collaborate and transform the customer experience with next-generation technology.

  • Workplace by Facebook changes how enterprises communicate

Workplace by Facebook changes how enterprises communicate

Many companies in Viet Nam, such as FPT Group, BIDV, Bao Viet Life Insurance or Hoc mai online education portal, are using Facebook Workplace. Participants heard this at a workshop to share success stories of Workplace, an enterprise social network for daily work and internal communication, across Vietnamese companies in Ha Noi on Wednesday.

They all said Workplace helped in improving communication, business exchange and interaction between members, and subsequently helped boost productivity and save time and money for companies.

FPT CEO Hoang Viet Ha said most FPT employees were young and did not like to use email for work. Workplace was easy to use, fast to deploy and had a friendly interface.

“It brings employees closer because it creates a friendly working environment. It helps increase communication between members, build internal culture and reduce email costs,” Ha said.

Following six months of operation, Workplace has become an essential part of the FPT Group. Several employees and working teams rely on Workplace to solve their problems. Some 22,600 users and 3,000 active groups create between 7,000 and 8,000 posts daily and there are some 7,400 active users per week, according to Ha.

Nguyen Thi Thu Hoa, Bao Viet Life Insurance Company’s head of MIS Department, said her company used to send up to 5,000 SMSes daily to insurance consultants. By using Workplace, the number of SMSes was reduced to 50 daily.

“Workplace is a dedicated and secure space for companies to connect, communicate and collaborate. Organisations of all sizes can use familiar Facebook features such as newsfeed, groups, messages and events to get work done,” Ramesh Gopalkrishna, head of Workplace, APAC at Facebook, said.

“More than 14,000 businesses are using Workplace on every continent, including Antarctica. We are excited to see more Vietnamese businesses incorporate Workplace into their organisations to transform internal culture and communications, which will help drive greater efficiency and productivity among their employees,” Gopalkrishna added.

The Viet Nam Government Portal recently agreed to trial Facebook Workplace for their 200-strong workforce.

Workplace by Facebook is a dedicated and secured communication platform helping companies internally connect, communicate and collaborate at work. This platform utilises familiar Facebook features such as newsfeed, groups and messages to help teams get things done.
