Volvo XC40 Electric Teased Ahead Of Reveal

Volvo is all set to reveal the all-electric XC40 on October 16, 2019. This will be the company’s first fully electric car and the company has teased the car ahead of its official reveal. But this time around the company gives us a glimpse into what the car will look like. For the first time in the company’s history, there’ll be a car that will move without petrol or diesel engine in the engine bay and have a battery in the floor, which will, of course, change the car’s dynamics.

As you can see in the images, the car will no longer need tailpipes or a large grille for cooling purposes, while the removal of an internal combustion engine creates extra room for even more storage space under the front hood and that’s exactly what the company is providing.

Robin Page, head of design at Volvo Cars said, “The roots of Scandinavian design are based on visual clarity and the reduction of element. The XC40 is a great example of this. Without the need for a grille we have created an even cleaner and more modern face, while the lack of tailpipes does the same at the rear. This is

The front grille is covered in body colour and creates a distinct visual identity at the front of the car, made possible by the fact that an electric car needs less air flow for cooling purposes. The grille also neatly packages the sensors for the new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform. The Volvo XC40 electric will be available in eight exterior colours, including a brand new Sage Green metallic option, while a contrasting black roof comes as standard. The XC40 electric will come with new 19 and 20-inch wheel options.

Inside, the Volvo XC40 electric gets a brand new driver interface specifically designed for electric cars keeps drivers up to date on relevant information such as battery status, while the interior design package features sporty styling details as well as carpets made of recycled materials.

The electric SUV is based on Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), which was designed from the outset with electrification in mind, the battery pack is integrated into the floor of the car without affecting interior space. There’s more functional storage space in the doors and under the seats, a fold-out hook for small bags and a removable waste bin in the tunnel console.

The Volvo XC40 electric provides around 30 litres of extra load space because an electric motor takes less space

Unique to the electric XC40, a special front load compartment (or ‘frunk’) located under the front hood provides around 30 litres of extra load space because an electric motor takes less space than a combustion engine. Volvo Cars will reveal more details about the fully electric XC40 in the coming weeks, before it will be first shown to the public on October 16.

  • Volvo XC40 Plug-in Hybrid Variant Launched Globally

Volvo XC40 Plug-in Hybrid Variant Launched Globally

Volvo has launched the plug-in hybrid variant of its XC40 compact SUV and with that, it has become the first automotive manufacturer to offer an electrified variant for each of its car models. The new T5 Twin Engine petrol-electric hybrid powertrain made its debut in UK and will be launched in other European markets soon. The Volvo XC40 plug-in hybrid has a front-wheel-drive system which uses a 180 bhp petrol engine which displaces 1.5-liters and has three-cylinders. There is also an electric motor which churns out 82 bhp and together, the combined power output is about 262 bhp, which is the highest in the XC40 lineup. There is a Lithium-ion battery with 10.7kWh capacity which provides an all-electric driving range of up to 46 kilometers.

The initial data from World Harmonised Light-Duty Test Procedure (WLTP) indicates that the XC40 plug-in hybrid has a fuel efficiency of 59.98 kmpl while having a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 7.3 seconds. This is also the first occasion where a hybrid powertrain has been used in Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture or CMA platform. The car also gets a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard, which is a first in a new-generation Volvo model. Volvo will also be launching a fully electric variant of the XC40 premium compact SUV in 2020, and offer a complete range of powertrain options. The new powertrain offered in R-Design, R-Design Pro, Inscription and Inscription Pro trim levels.

The XC40 T5 Twin Engine models get a charging outlet on the nearside front wing. The company will provide a 4.5 metre cable with a three-pin plug as standard while a type 2/mode 3 fast-charge cables will be available as an optional extra. Charging via the fast-charge cable will completely recharge the car’s high-voltage battery in as little as 2.5 hours. Fully charging via the three-pin plug cable takes between 3.5 and 6 hours.

Volvo UK dealers have begun taking orders now and the first cars will be delivered in February 2020.

  • Volvo XC40 full-electric variant to debut later this year

Volvo XC40 full-electric variant to debut later this year

Volvo will reveal the full-electric version of the XC40 before the end of the year, the company told at a safety event here last week. Officials declined to provide additional details. Adding a battery-powered version of the compact SUV to the lineup is a crucial step for Volvo, which wants full-electric cars to account for half of its global sales by 2025.

The XC40 will be the first battery-driven model from the Swedish brand and the second full-electric vehicle from the Volvo Car Group. The first was the Polestar 2, which the group’s electrified performance brand debuted in February and revealed to the public at the Geneva auto show this month.

Both full-electric vehicles will be on the road by 2020.

In addition, both models will use the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) that Volvo developed with Chinese sister brand Geely. CMA also underpins the 01, 02 and 03 from Lynk & CO. The trio of Lynk & CO cars accounted for more than 120,000 combined sales in China last year. The upstart brand, which is co-owned by Volvo Cars and Zhejiang Geely Holding, plans to open stores in five European cities next year.

The XC40, which was the 2018 European Car of the Year, is Volvo’s No. 2-selling model globally after its large sibling, the XC60.

Last month Volvo said the XC40 would also get two plug-in hybrid powertrain options, starting with a T5 Twin Engine variant and followed by the T4 Twin Engine.

Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said he expects plug-in hybrids to account for up to 25 percent of global sales in the model lines that offer them. Currently about 10 percent to 15 percent of Volvo’s global sales come from plug-in hybrids. The powertrain is offered in the XC90 and XC60 SUVs, V90 and V60 station wagons and the S90 and S60 sedans.
