  • US Gov’t Shutdown Unlikely to Impact Indonesian Economy

US Gov’t Shutdown Unlikely to Impact Indonesian Economy

The United States government shutdown will not have a significant impact on the Indonesian economy if it lasts for only a short time, because export markets rely on the private sector, a minister said on Monday (22/01).

US senators were unable to reach an agreement on a bill to fund federal agencies through Feb. 16, which forced hundreds of thousands of employees in non-essential sectors to be on unpaid leave and more than a million people in essential sectors to work unpaid until a funding deal is renewed.

Essential workers are those dealing with public safety and national security, such as the military and hospitals.

“If it is only for the short term; it will not [impact Indonesia],” National Development Planning Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro said.

Bambang added that in the short term, the shutdown will not disrupt Indonesia’s exports to the United States as they are mostly dealt with the private sector.

Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data shows Indonesian exports to the United States accounted for 11.2 percent of the country’s total, amounting to $17.1 billion annually and dominated by a combination of commodities, such as rubber and shrimps; and non-high-tech manufacturing products, such as furniture, textiles and footwear.

Mohammad Faisal, an economist at Jakarta-based research firm CORE Indonesia, predicts that the shutdown will unlikely last for more than a month, based on previous shutdowns.

The United States has had 18 federal government shutdowns since 1976, with the longest having been for 21 days between December 1995 and January 1996.

Mohammad said the last shutdown in 2013 during Barack Obama’s administration lasted for 16 days and did not have a significant impact on the global economy, including developing countries such as Indonesia.

    Getting Ready

Bhima Yudhistira Adinegara, an economist at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), said the government must start preparing for risk mitigation as President Donald Trump’s term in office will only end in 2021.

“This is Trump’s first year of arranging the government budget … if these keep repeating, Indonesia must have a way to mitigate the risk,” Bhima said.

If the current shutdown lasts less than 20 days, Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves of $130 billion are still sufficient to stabilize the rupiah exchange rate, according to the latest figures.

However, Bhima said Indonesia has to increase its foreign exchange reserves as a “safety net” against external influences by promoting non-oil and gas exports and tourism.

He added that Indonesia should decrease its dependence on the US market by accelerating trade agreements with nontraditional trading partners, such as Chile, Russia and countries in Eastern Europe and Africa, to diversify the country’s markets.

For the time being, Bhima said the US dollar exchange rate will have a minimal impact on the rupiah over the next two weeks as it is still within the controlled range of Rp 13,350 to Rp 13,400.

Hermes to receive HK$900 million from selling its space

British property developer Chelsfield has bought the ground floor of The Galleria shopping centre in Central from French luxury brand Hermes for HK$900 million (US$115 million).

Comprising four retail shop units and a basement, the floor has a combined area of 7100sqft (660sqm).

Hermes makes a profit of $710 million through the sale of its former flagship space, after buying up the component units in succession since 2000 for a total of $190 million.

After deciding in 2016 to relocate its flagship to Prince’s Building, just a five-minute walk away, Hermes put the floor on the market.

For Chelsfield, the deal is its second acquisition of a commercial property in Hong Kong within a month. It partnered with Hong Kong real-estate investment firm Pamfleet to buy a shopping centre in North Point last month for $2 billion from Fortune Reit.

Chelsfield expanded to Asia in 2016, when it took over the real-estate division of the Dymon Asia Group. The Asia arm of the UK firm is now run by Dymon’s former management team led by former Grosvenor executive Nick Loup, who joined Chelsfield in 2015 as part of the takeover.

  • Korea’s Handsome to offer home-trial service

Korean apparel retailer Handsome is launching a service for customers to have their selected clothes delivered and tried on at home before deciding whether to buy.

Online shoppers can pick up to three pieces of clothing marked as available for the service and have them delivered to their residence during a time slot of their choice. Handsome employees will deliver the clothing in branded vehicles.

Some 1300 clothing items from 21 of Handsome’s brands will be open to the “at Home” service that will first be offered to Handsome’s VIP and frequent online shoppers in some Seoul suburbs. The list of available products and suburbs served will gradually be expanded afterward, the company says.

Customers will have two days to decide whether they want to make any purchases or they can return all items without extra cost.

Handsome has been focusing on the online-to-offline business, allowing customers to buy online and pick up at offline locations and providing curation services to recommend items based on collected data on clients’ preferences. The company claimed the home-fitting service is the first in Korea’s fashion-retail industry.

“Amazon started its fitting service Prime Wardrobe last year for up to 15 items for a Prime member,” a company spokesperson said. “We will establish a differentiated shopping service that offers a wide range of information on fashion and communicates with customers.”

Jollibee opens 27th store in Davao

They say Jollibee is an indicator of progress. There’s this notion that when there is a branch of Jollibee in a place, it can be considered as a city. This may not be necessarily true but no one can argue that Jollibee, indeed, is an indicator of progress as it genuinely brings happiness to a place through its good food and “happy place” set-up. This year, Dabawenyos living near Puan, Davao City have more reasons to be happy as Jollibee – Puan branch opened last January 19.

The newest store is the 27th branch of Jollibee in Davao City and 130th in Mindanao. It is open 24 hours and has a Drive Thru store. Just like any store opening, it started with a blessing a day earlier, a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the day and a Chicken Joy toast. The store team was also introduced to the customers. The first-day customers were also entertained with a Jollitown Dance by the Jollibee store management team. LanghapSarap meals were also offered to those who graced the event.

  • Audemars Piguet to try secondhand market

Audemars Piguet to try secondhand market

Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piguet is planning to launch its own shop for used watches.

It is believed to be the first major watch brand to break into the growing market for secondhand luxury timepieces.

Audemars Piguet (AP) says it has had a “test run” at a Geneva store and intends to expand its secondhand business to other Swiss locations. Initially it is treating customer trade-ins as partial exchanges, later aiming to sell the pieces.

“Secondhand is the next big thing in the watch industry,” says AP chief executive Francois-Henry Bennahmias. “At the moment, we leave it to what I call the ‘dark side’ to deal with demand for pre-owned pieces.”

Smaller-scale watch brands such as H.Moser & Cie and MB&F will join AP in expanding to the secondary high-end goods market later this year.

“It is important to control the sale of secondhand watches to protect owners and the value of watches already in the market,” says H.Moser & Cie’s Edouard Meylan.

  • Ericsson unveils 5G small cell solution

Ericsson unveils 5G small cell solution

Ericsson has unveiled a new small cell solution designed to meet the indoor mobile broadband performance requirements that will be demanded by 5G.

The new 5G Radio Dot small cell radio will support the new 5G mid-bands between 3-GHz and 6-GHz, delivering speeds of up to 2Gbps.

The new solution is also deigned to support emerging 5G industrial applications such as connected factories, connected hospitals and connected mining operations.

Operators will be able to deploy 5G Radio Dot next to 4G solutions using the same cabling infrastructure, architecture and locations as existing 4G Radio Dot deployments. Radio Dot systems are used in many large buildings including office blocks, shopping malls, hospitals and airports.

“Now that first 5G standards are here, vendors are going to need multiple radio solutions to help operators roll out their new 5G networks. Ericsson takes an important initial step in this direction by adding indoor small cell 5G solutions to its already existing outdoor 5G RAN portfolio,” Ovum practice leader Daryl Schoolar commented.

“This new indoor solution from Ericsson is going to be attractive for operators wanting to offer enterprises good indoor performance for enhanced mobile broadband and new industrial applications that can’t be met by Wi-Fi or 5G base stations deployed outdoors.”

Ericsson head of network infrastructure Nishant Batra commented that adding small cell solutions to its 5G portfolio is a natural part of the evolution to 5G.

“Enterprises have been asking for first-rate connectivity indoors, as well as higher speeds and capacity to serve advanced use cases that cannot be addressed by traditional indoor systems. Our 5G portfolio, bolstered by small cells, will enable operators to meet these demands,” he said.

The 5G Radio Dot will undergo trials in late 2018 and will be commercially available in 2019.
