CAPI CEO Emma Evans says the brand is excited to be launching through 7-Eleven as it will enable them to bring their locally produced premium water brand to more Australians.

“We are beyond thrilled about our roll out with 7-Eleven Australia and grateful for the 7-Eleven team’s support with CAPI.

“With increased visibility of the brand in fridges across Australia we are excited about increasing awareness of supporting local beverage brands and driving further innovation.”

  • 7-Eleven doubles coffee prices as it caves in to inflation

7-Eleven doubles coffee prices as it caves in to inflation

7-Eleven’s $1 coffees and Slurpees are set to become the latest victims of Australia’s cost of living crisis, as the service station chain buckles under the pressure of inflation.

In another blow for Aussies, coffee prices will be bumped up at 7-Eleven stores across the country to address the retail company’s rising operational costs.

A regular cup of coffee at the service station will double in price as of Tuesday, October 4, becoming $2, while large coffees increase to $3 and super cups to $3.50.

Those wanting to save some extra coin, however, can bring their own reusable cup in-store to save 50c on their morning cuppa.

The service station’s $1 coffee isn’t the only caffeine hit you’ll be forking out more for, with the price of iced coffees and ice cream coffee melts set to rise to $3 along with the store’s hot chocolates.

The price hike is the first in over a decade, with the retail store’s regular-sized coffee remaining at $1 since 2009.

As for Slurpees, a small will become $1.00, a large will move to $1.50, a super to $2.50 and a mega will become $4.50.

7-Eleven CEO and managing director, Angus McKay, said it was no longer possible for the retail company to absorb costs.

“Although this is the first price change in more than a decade, a single $2 gold coin for a regular coffee remains among the best value offers in the industry,” Mr McKay told NCA NewsWire on Monday.

“We will continue to provide our customers with great value and great quality, while ensuring our prices are sustainable for our store owners, our suppliers and our communities,” he said.

Along with encouraging customers to use a reusable cups, Mr McKay said people could expect further announcements in the next few weeks which will target the company’s sustainability goals.

“Our new offer is fair value for our community, store owners and suppliers, and we’ll keep working to make it better,” he said.

Victoria, NSW, ACT, QLD and Western Australia are home to 720 7-Elevens, with more than 450 small family-owned businesses in the service station franchise network.

The popular drinks add to a growing list of items becoming increasingly unaffordable, with petrol, energy and food costs putting thousands of Aussies under pressure.

The annual inflation rate jumped to 6.1 per cent in the year to June, the highest level in more than two decades.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has warned Australians that the “confronting” figure will get worse before it gets better.

“It’s going to be a difficult time ahead; we expect it to get higher,” he said in July.

“It will get tougher before it starts to ease.”

7-Eleven to sell body scrub online made from coffee

In what’s likely the most unexpected beauty launch of the year, 7-Eleven has officially entered the world of beauty with the release of their $1 coffee body scrub.

The strictly limited edition scrub, which will be sold exclusively via online retailer Adore Beauty from Tuesday 22 March, is made from the same aromatic Arabica and Robusta beans found in the millions of cups of freshly ground coffee sold each year at 7-Eleven.

Much like the retailer’s coffee, the product’s very reasonable price tag is sure to excite beauty lovers, with the body scrub retailing for just $1.

Australian actor Olympia Valance has also been revealed as the face of the new product, saying, “Coffee and skincare products are two things I can’t live without, so being the face of 7-Eleven’s Coffee Body Scrub was a no brainer. Now I can exfoliate, rejuvenate and caffeinate with the same great coffee Australians have been enjoying for years.”

7-Eleven’s Head of Marketing Communications, Adam Jacka, added that the Coffee Body Scrub is a fun and innovative way to showcase the quality of coffee that Australians enjoy every day.

“We wanted to showcase the quality of our coffee beans in new ways. More than 71 million cups are already enjoyed across Australia each year but we know some are still yet to try our iconic coffee. Seriously, our coffee beans are so good we’ve made a coffee scrub out of them!”

  • 7-Eleven introduces autonomous delivery robot in Seoul

7-Eleven introduces autonomous delivery robot in Seoul

Korea Seven, which operates 7-Eleven stores in South Korea, has partnered with Neubility, a South Korean autonomous robot startup, to commercialize autonomous robots for short-range delivery.

Most large convenience store chains in South Korea offer delivery to customers via third-party food delivery apps. For example, the popular Yogiyo food delivery app delivers groceries and other products from CU and GS25 chains. Typically, third-party delivery services receive about $3.51 per delivery.

The domestic food-delivery services market hit $19.8 billion last year, according to the South Korean Fair Trade Commission.

Korea Seven’s agreement with Neubility calls for it to commercialize the autonomous robot Neubie in Seoul and surrounding areas by the end of this year. Neubie robots can navigate deliveries in urban areas in any weather conditions.

However, it can be difficult for these robots to operate in the Gangnam district because the numerous skyscrapers could block the satellite signals needed for the robot’s GPS system. To overcome this, Neubie robots have cameras and sensors in addition to GPS, so they are more adaptable for those areas.

“The two companies will cooperate to build a model for [a] next-generation delivery service that brings convenience to store management as well as increased profits,” said Choi Kyung-ho, CEO of 7-Eleven in South Korea.

Elsewhere in Asia, 7-Eleven Japan this week announced plans to launch national delivery services by 2026. The country’s top c-store chain will mobilize its national network for last-mile delivery to take on Amazon.

  • Reliance Retail to launch 7-Eleven stores in India after Future’s exit

Reliance Retail to launch 7-Eleven stores in India after Future’s exit

Reliance Industries Ltd’s retail arm said on Thursday it would roll out 7-Eleven convenience stores in India, days after Future Retail Ltd ended a similar deal with the US chain.

Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd will open the first 7-Eleven round-the-clock convenience store in a neighborhood in India’s financial capital of Mumbai on Oct 9.

The deal marks the latest by the Reliance Group, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, to rapidly expand its retail and e-commerce businesses to better compete with Amazon.com and Walmart Inc’s Flipkart in India’s nearly trillion-dollar retail market.

The oil-to-telecoms conglomerate’s US$3.4 billion deal for the retail assets of Future Group has been stalled following Amazon’s legal challenge.

Irving, Texas-based 7-Eleven, known for its iconic products including the Slurpee, operates and franchises more than 77,000 stores in 18 countries and regions.

Future Retail said on Tuesday it had mutually terminated an agreement with 7-Eleven as the companies were not able to meet targets of opening stores and paying franchise fees.

In 2019, Future Retail – India’s second-largest retailer with more than 1,700 stores, including the popular Big Bazaar supermarkets and local chains Food Hall and Nilgiris – had said it plans to set up 7-Eleven stores from scratch and convert some of its existing operations into the U.S. brand.

The unit formed to run 7-Eleven stores in India had reported a loss of 173 million rupees without opening any stores, Future Retail’s annual report showed.

Reliance’s shares rose 1.22 percent in morning trade, while Future Retail stock gained 3.7% in a strong market.

  • Future Group calls it quits on 7-Eleven India plans

Future Group calls it quits on 7-Eleven India plans

7-Eleven Inc and Future Retail have ended their agreement to operate convenience stores in India just two years after it was signed.

Reuters reports that the two companies arrived at a mutual decision to end the relationship, with Future Group failing to meet store rollout targets and the payment of franchise fees.

The original deal was revealed in February 2019 and in December that year Future Group founder and CEO Kishore Biyani said the firm would concentrate on development in Mumbai only for the initial few years of business, with the first outlets launching in March 2020.

He said the company planned to open 1000 7-Eleven stores in the city before moving out into other regions of the country after two to three years.

However Indian news sources reported last year that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic had delayed the implementation of the franchise agreement.

In a statement, Future Group said the termination would have no financial or business impact on the company.

  • 7-Eleven, Simply Cups rescue 20 million cups from landfill

7-Eleven, Simply Cups rescue 20 million cups from landfill

“Australians love their coffee so it’s vital that they can easily and reliably recycle their disposable coffee cup and reduce the huge number of takeaway cups that currently end up in landfill each year,” Assistant Minister Evans said. “Rather than just being put into the rubbish bin and ending in landfill, Simply Cups collect and then reprocess the used coffee cups, transforming them into new items like outdoor furniture, coffee cup trays, and even traffic solutions like roadside kerbing.”

“Simply Cups’ recycling scheme now collects almost 1 million cups every month Across Australia, with nearly 1000 collection points at 7-Eleven stores, cafes, hotels, hospitals and universities,” said Assistant Minister Evens. “Australians care deeply about recycling, and disposing of coffee cups at a designated Simply Cups collection point, they will be doing their part to increase recycling and reduce waste. This is a great practical example of Australia’s growing circular economy in action, and shows how we will all benefit from an invigorated waste and recycling industry.”

Founded by circular economy specialist Closed Loop, Simply Cups has installed almost 1,000 cup collection points across Australia in less than three years, including 632 7-Eleven stores nationwide. Rob Pascoe, Closed Loop Managing Director, said Simply Cups aims to make cup recycling mainstream and to recycle 100 million cups every year.

“Simply Cups is a perfect example of the circular economy in action,” said Pascoe. “It is a practical solution that increases recycling rates and reduces waste, while creating supply and demand for products made from recycled material. It is fantastic to see so many people embracing Simply Cups, because it really is a win-win for the environment and the economy.”

“Our circular economy will grow quickly if people choose Australian-made and recycled over other alternatives. After all, recycling doesn’t actually happen when you put an item in a bin, it only happens when that item is given a second life,” Pascoe added.

7-Eleven is the pioneering partner of Simply Cups and leads the way with the most collection points and most cups diverted from landfill (2.7 million cups since 2018).

“Saving 10 million coffee cups from landfill is a fantastic achievement, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg,” said 7-Eleven Chief Executive Officer, Angus McKay. “We encourage customers to up the ante and deliver any brand of used coffee cup or straw to our cup collection points at store, and we’ll make sure they get recycled via Simply Cups.”

“We agree that the best option is not to create waste in the first place. We encourage reusable coffee cups and have an rCUP available for purchase, which is a reusable coffee cup made from recycled coffee cups. We also regularly run promotions on Slurpee bottles to encourage the use of those instead of paper cups.”

“In addition, we’re rolling out a Cup Rescue community program to fund the recycling of cups for small business, community groups and schools by providing them with their own cup collection units.  This is perfect for organisations that are either too small to set up their own recycling with Simply Cups or are community organisations like schools,” said McKay.

As well as 7-Eleven stores, Simply Cups collection points can now be found in cafes, office buildings and shopping centres across Australia. Simply Cups has grown exponentially since starting in May 2017, collecting 1 million cups in the first 12 months and 10 million cups within 3 years.

  • 7-Eleven Hong Kong opens its 1000th store

7-Eleven Hong Kong opens its 1000th store

7-Eleven has officially opened its 1000th store in Hong Kong – a milestone moment for both the brand and its customers. 7-Eleven launched its very first store in Happy Valley back in 1981 and, 40 years later, has opened its 1000th store on Des Voeux Road in Central. An integral part of the community and a true neighborhood store, 7-Eleven is committed to bringing convenience closer to its customers wherever they are, whenever they need.

Evolving alongside the people of Hong Kong, the brand has constantly innovated to live up to changing consumer expectations. To mark this landmark achievement, a series of promotions and offers are being rolled out to thank customers for their loyal support.

A Journey of 1000 Stores: the story of 7-Eleven in Hong Kong

The Journey of 1000 Stores, a retrospective showcase outlining the story of 7-Eleven in Hong Kong, was held today in Central on 8 July. The exhibition charted 7-Eleven’s journey from its very first store right up to the opening of its 1000th store highlighting the brand’s milestones over the years, which many Hongkongers may still fondly remember from childhood.

These include the immensely popular Hello Kitty badge collectible program, from 2004 and the launch of HOTSHOT, its ready-to-eat range of authentic Hong Kong-style treats beloved by students of all ages!

Serving the community for 40 years

7-Eleven has always been committed to giving back. Since 2013, it has worked with Caritas to offer training and job opportunities to over 40 people with special needs. In 2017, it teamed up with Pei Ho Counterparts to donate and distribute food to the homeless, the elderly, and low-income families. It also hands out small gifts every Christmas to children in need to spread festive cheer.

In 2020, 7-Eleven launched the Charity Meal Voucher Programme: 553,787 vouchers were collected within eight days and then distributed in local neighborhoods hardest hit by the pandemic in collaboration with Food Angel, St. James’ Settlement, Foodlink, Hong Kong Christian Service, and Pei Ho Counterparts.

Fun and exciting offers to say a big thank you to all its customers!

7-Eleven’s continuing success is down to its team members, business partners, and, most importantly, its customers. To thank customers for their ongoing support, several tempting promotions and offers are taking place throughout July. For example, 7-Eleven launched an Instant Win Game, a first-of-its-kind Augmented Reality lucky draw with over $10 million worth of prizes to be won including 2,000 free cups of 7CAFÉ, 1,000 $100 cash vouchers, and a whole host of product discounts. To mark 7-Eleven Day on 11 July, 7-Eleven will be running unmissable offers such as $7 cups of 7CAFÉ, $7 and $11 discounts on a wide range of products and more. There will also be “1000-themed” promotions exclusively for you Rewards members such as product redemptions for 1,000 yuu points and 1,000 yuu point giveaways. 7-Eleven deeply appreciates the continuous support of its customers and looks forward to sharing this milestone moment with everyone!

  • 7-Eleven settles franchisee class actions

    7-Eleven settles franchisee class actions

7-Eleven has agreed to settle franchisee class actions following mediation. A statement from the convenience chain confirmed the settlement but gave no insight into the details of the agreement.

“7-Eleven can confirm that a non-binding in-principle agreement to settle the class actions has been reached, subject to terms of a settlement deed being agreed and subject to the approval of the Federal Court of Australia.

“The settlement follows mediation between the parties on 24, 25, and 29 June 2021,” said 7-Eleven.

It’s been a rollercoaster ride since the class actions were mooted back in 2017.

In February 2018 Stewart Levitt, senior partner at Levitt Robinson Solicitors which was acting for the franchisees, filed a claim in the Federal Court.

The group of current and former franchisees alleged misleading and deceptive conduct, unconscionable conduct, and contract breaches by 7-Eleven, and alleged the ANZ bank had provided loans that were unsustainable.

Levitt Robinson believed “substantial damages” could be available.

However, the law firm had its knuckles metaphorically rapped when it was forced to retract statements made to franchisees in 2017.

In 2019 the class action hit a roadblock when the court accepted an undertaking from the convenience chain.

According to Lawyerly, an in-principle settlement was approved in August 2020 between ANZ and the applicants.

The class actions against 7-Eleven continued with a trial set for winter 2021. Lawyerly reported in May this year a judge rejected a proposal by the convenience chain for a pre-trial ruling and mediation took place in late June.

  • 7-Eleven will invest $15m+ in Far North Queensland

7-Eleven will invest $15m+ in Far North Queensland

7-Eleven is investing in Far North Queensland for the first time, with about 15 stores expected to open in the region over the next two years.

General manager – channel, Braeden Lord, said exact locations have not yet been chosen.

“We are continuing to work with landlords and developers to identify opportunities to secure the right sites to meet the needs of the community.

“We’re starting in Townsville and Cairns and will be continuing to explore the region which we feel has a huge potential for growth.”

The convenience store chain is committed to opening stores in Townsville and Cairns before June 2022 and Lord is expecting swift expansion across the region by 2023.

He said the company’s $15 million+ investment will help drive economic growth in Far North Queensland.

“Recent investments in our supply chain have made it possible for us to bring our offer to Townsville and Cairns and we are incredibly excited about the chance to serve the local communities in Far North Queensland.

“7-Eleven is committed to providing regional Australians with access to the same level of choice and convenience that is available to people who live in metropolitan areas,” he said.
