  • Kathmandu lifts same-store sales in FY19

Kathmandu lifts same-store sales in FY19

Kathmandu has reported a 2.7 percent year-on-year increase in same-store sales in Australia in FY19, and a 3.9 percent decline in same-store sales in New Zealand year on year.

Overall, group same-store sales grew 0.6 percent year on year in FY19, the outdoor retailer said in a trading update on its unaudited full-year results on Thursday.

Total sales across the business grew 9.6 percent to $520 million (NZ$545 million) compared to the year prior, with Kathmandu seeing strong performance in Australia during the second half of the financial year.

According to Kathmandu managing director and chief executive Xavier Simonet, this was due to strong winter sales in Australia, as well as the continued performance of footwear brand Oboz.

US-based footwear brand Oboz, acquired in April 2018, is expected to see continued growth in FY20 and beyond, according to Simonet.

The business expects to see net profit of between $52.9 million (NZ$55.5 million) and $54.3 million (NZ$57 million), based off of an EBIT of between $78.7 million (NZ$82.5 million) and $80.1 million (NZ$84 million).

This is compared to last year’s net profit of $48.1 million (NZ$50.5 million) and $71.1 million (NZ$74.6 million).

Kathmandu expects to release its audited full-year results in late September.

Simonet has previously stated international growth remains a priority moving forward.

Kathmandu appointed Amy Beck as president of its North American business in January of this year as part of this international push.

“Kathmandu is on a journey of transformation,” Simonet said, noting that profit growth in the core Australasian business would be used to fund investment into future growth.

“While we are focused on driving growth for our core Kathmandu business in Australia and New Zealand, we are also step by step diversifying our channels, brand and markets, particularly through Oboz which has delivered strong growth.”

  • Nike planning to sell off Hurley surfwear brand

Nike planning to sell off Hurley surfwear brand

Nike is considering the sale of its Hurley surfwear brand, according to a Reuters report.

A general downturn in the sector has pushed other industry players within the space into significant difficulties, including rival brand Quiksilver – which filed for bankruptcy in 2015. Nike’s potential sale of its Hurley brand is reportedly likely to be a reaction to the same trends and an indication that the surfwear segment is not showing signs of recovery.

“The surf/skate market has been soft,” said NPD Group VP and senior industry adviser of sports Matt Powell. “Hurley has not been a growth story for some time.”

Nike’s potential sales price for the brand has not been disclosed.

  • BMW X6 Revealed; Global Launch In November

BMW X6 Revealed; Global Launch In November

BMW took the wraps off the new-generation X6 sports activity coupe. It is the third generation model and has been updated completely. Beginning with the looks, the X6 gets a bigger kidney grille up front and the headlamps are more angular than rounded. Plus, the grille itself has a lighting function should you choose to switch it on. The X6 is now more chiseled and wears a sculpted look as compared to the more rounded look that the outgoing model had. The new X6 also grows in size with the length growing by 26 mm to 4,935 mm and the width growing by 15 mm to 2,004 mm. The wheelbase too increases by 42 mm to 2,975 mm, although the height is now reduced by 6 mm at 1,696 mm.

The interior has been updated as well. It has a minimalist, sporty look thanks to Vernasca leather upholstery and new dashboard design which is driver focussed. Like any other BMW SUV, the new X6 too gets a bunch of standard and optional features which include multifunction seats with massage function for the driver and front passenger, four-zone automatic climate control, thermoelectric cup holders, Panoramic roof, interior fragrance package and a Bowers & Wilkins 3D Surround Sound System.

BMW will offer four engines on the new-generation X6 including two petrol and two diesel engines. There will be V8 petrol and straight six petrol engines making 530 and 340 bhp respectively. And there is an in-line 6-cylinder diesel engine in two states of tune, making 400 bhp and 265 bhp. All new BMW X6 models come as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while intelligent all-wheel drive maximises traction, agility and directional stability.

Other features on the new BMW X6 include air suspension wherein one can alter the ride height of the SUV through 80 mm, and there is an off-road package on offer as well but not on the BMW X6 M50i and the BMW X6 M50d.

  • Jeep Compass Based Seven-Seater SUV In The Works For India

Jeep Compass Based Seven-Seater SUV In The Works For India

The Jeep Compass was a game changer when it first arrived in 2017 and helped the Fiat Chrysler Automobile (FCA) cement the Jeep brand in the premium segment. Now, a report suggests that the American automaker is looking to further capitalize on the success of the Compass and is in working on a seven-seater version for the Indian market. A report states that the head honchos at FCA have approved a new top-of-the-line SUV under the Jeep brand that will hit the market by 2020-21. The new Compass-based seven-seater SUV will take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V and the likes, when it goes on sale.

Interestingly, Jeep’s plans to produce a seven-seater SUV for India aren’t new. However, the report states that the project was given the green light only now. The Jeep Grand Compass, as it is touted to be called, will get a proper 4×4 drivetrain and will be based on the all-new Compass that is in the works for 2020. The model will be produced at the automaker’s facility in Ranjangaon, near Pune and is likely to hit the market by the second half of next year or by early 2021.

The new Jeep Grand Compass will help the American establish itself in the premium end of the SUV space, and solidify its position in the overall SUV space. The seven-seater SUV will be followed up with the more affordable subcompact offering in Jeep India’s stable that will hit the market in the following years. FCA said that the company had no comments at the moment on the same.

It will be safe to say that the upcoming Jeep seven-seater SUV will retain the automaker’s DNA at its core, complete with the brand’s off-roading capabilities and premium positioning. Expect to see a host of new tech and features from the company’s global stable. Engine options are unclear at the moment, but Jeep is likely to offer both petrol and diesel versions. The 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel could be used on the new model too, albeit with higher power output.

Meanwhile, Jeep India is currently in the process of upgrading the Compass to the BS6 regulations. The newly launched Compass Trailhawk already gets a BS6 ready engine, and other variants of the SUV will meet the new norms soon. The automaker is also likely to introduce the diesel automatic version of the Compass towards the end of this year or probably in the first half of 2020.

  • Edmund Hillary Brands kicks off $3m capital raise

Edmund Hillary Brands kicks off $3m capital raise

A luxury outdoor fashion brand inspired by Sir Edmund Hillary is looking to raise $3 million to expand overseas and fund a women’s range.

Edmund Hillary Brands, which was co-founded with the Hillary family in 2018, launched an equity crowdfunding campaign on UK crowdfunding platform Crowdcube on Monday.

Co-founder and CEO Mike Hall-Taylor said the brand aims to build on the momentum it has experienced since debuting its first collection last year.

“We’ve received an overwhelming response to our first collection since launch last year and we want to maintain the momentum and capitalise on immediate opportunities in the UK, US, China and Australia as well as meet the demand from consumers for a women’s range,” Hall-Taylor said in a statement.

While the brand expects to attract a number of larger investors, the minimum investment was deliberately kept at $23 to be accessible to New Zealanders who are interested.

At the time of this writing, Edmund Hillary Brands had raised £82,728, or roughly $160,000, from 53 investors, bringing it 16 per cent of the way to its target. The campaign ends on July 24.

Edmund Hillary Brands has enjoyed some early successes since launching in 2018, including a global debut at New Zealand Fashion Week, the opening of a standalone store at Queenstown airport, a global e-commerce site and partnerships with two supporting retailers.

The brand has also formed a distribution partnership with a major e-commerce platform in China, where it will launch in September, ahead of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

The brand’s debut collection was inspired by the classic styles worn by Sir Edmund Hillary and the expedition team. Designers poured over more than 2000 images of the 1953 expedition when developing the range.

In addition to the brand’s connection with Sir Edmund Hillary’s style, a percentage of every sale goes to support Himalayan communities and outdoor education.

“Apart from being an exciting financial investment, it also represents the opportunity to be part of continuing my father’s legacy with a portion of every sale going to the causes close to Ed’s heart – supporting Himalayan communities and outdoor education in our key markets,” Peter Hillary, co-founder of the brand, said in a statement.

  • Outdoor Retailers Fighting for Market Share

Outdoor Retailers Fighting for Market Share

Outdoor retailers Kathmandu and Decathlon are vying for a piece of Australia’s ski and snowboard market this winter.

Both businesses are launching inaugural snow collections, despite the fact that less than a million Australians regularly or occasionally ski or snowboard, according to 2018 data from Roy Morgan.

On Thursday, Kathmandu launched its inaugural snow collection called Styper, which includes ski jackets and pants for adults and kids, as well as goggles and snow luggage.

“Designed to suit beginner and intermediate levels, as well as the more sophisticated skiers, the pieces connect seamlessly together to keep warmth in and snow out, and are made with sustainable, state of the art ngx2 fabric technology that is waterproof, wind-proof and breathable,” the retailer said in a statement.

The launch comes on the heels of Decathlon’s announcement that it is introducing more than 100 ski and snowboard-specific product lines from its Wed’ze brand available in Australia this year.

The European discount retailer described its offer as an affordable option for people who want a trusted brand and good advice. The range will include adult ski jackets and pants for under $100, adult ski gloves for less than $40, kids’ ski gloves for less than $20, neck warmers and beanies for $10 and ski and binding packages for under $500.

The price point is considerably lower than Kathmandu, which starts at $199.98 for kids and $349.98 for adults.

Kathmandu’s collection is available in-store in Australia and New Zealand, while Decathlon’s collection is available in-store and online in Australia.

Fashion brand SuperDry has been selling its snow range in Australia and New Zealand for the past three years.

  • Garmin expands Forerunner line with five new GPS models

Garmin expands Forerunner line with five new GPS models

While Garmin makes all kinds of wearable devices, ranging from super-basic activity trackers to luxury smartwatches, its central focus remains on so-called GPS running watches, designed to take on the likes of the Fitbit Versa rather than the global market-leading Apple Watch family.

But not all athletes have the same passion, drive, and needs, which is why Garmin is today vastly expanding the Forerunner lineup with five new models ranging in price from $199.99 to $599.99. These are joining the entry-level $100 Forerunner 25, mid-range $350 Forerunner 735XT, and a $450 Forerunner 645 Music that lets you store your favorite tunes directly on your wrist, as well as supporting contactless payments.

Obviously, the newly unveiled Garmin Forerunner 45 and Forerunner 45S come with no such advanced features, although their built-in heart rate monitor and standalone GPS functionality are arguably enough to justify a $200 price tag. In case you’re wondering, the main difference between these two models is the smaller 39 mm case of the 45S (compared to a 42-milimeter “standard” Forerunner 45 variant).

Not exactly the world’s most stylish wearable products, the Forerunner 45 series also comes with “chemically strengthened” glass, a silicone strap, relatively small display, top-notch water resistance, lengthy battery life (up to 7 days in “smartwatch mode”), and all the elementary fitness tracking features a casual runner would ever need.

At $350, the Garmin Forerunner 245 Music adds the ability to hold up to 500 songs into the equation, as well as more “advanced features to help runners improve.” Basically, you can get personalized recommendations on smarter ways to train and recover after intense workouts, not to mention a larger and sharper screen, stronger Gorilla Glass 3 lens protection, and improved battery life in “GPS mode.” There’s also a non-Music Forerunner 245 version available in exchange for $299.99.

Last but certainly not least, the $600 Garmin Forerunner 945 is purportedly “made for the driven, the qualifiers, and the elite”, holding up to 1,000 songs (with both Spotify and Deezer support), while aiming to take your training to the next level with all the state-of-the-art activity tracking technologies and sensors available today, from VO2 Max to Pulse Ox and a bunch of complex performance monitoring tools.

The Forerunner 945 can keep the lights on for up to two weeks on a single charge with the GPS switched off, while supporting wrist payments and boasting an extra-robust body with Gorilla Glass DX protection.

  • The North Face shuts down stores

The North Face shuts down stores

Outdoor retailer The North Face closed its global headquarters and more than 100 stores in the US and Canada on Monday, April 22, as part of its effort to make Earth Day a global holiday.

The store closures are the culmination of The North Face’s Explore Mode campaign, which saw the brand partner with musicians, artists and culinary influencers on pop-up events throughout the US.

The move follows a campaign launched four years ago by fellow US outdoor retailer REI to shut its stores and website on Black Friday and instead encourage customers to #optoutside.

Before closing its bricks-and-mortar stores in North America, The North Face switched them to Explore Mode, so customers could find resources to spend Earth “off the grid”, including an exploration kit filled with “analog gear to stay present and capture memories without the need for digital devices”.

“We believe that when people take time to appreciate the Earth, they feel more connected to it and are more likely to protect it,” Tim Bantle, global general manager of lifestyle at The North Face, said.

“Explore Mode urges us to unplug from our digital lives to connect in real life to the world, each other, and ourselves in the effort to move the world forward.”

Petition to make Earth Day global holiday

The North Face was one of 16 organisations, including global brands like Clif and S’Well, that launched a petition with Change.org earlier this month to make Earth Day a national holiday everywhere.

At the time of this writing, more than 128,600 people had signed the petition, which has a goal to reach 150,000.

Other retailers, such as Tapestry Inc, also took the opportunity of Earth Day to announce sustainability initiatives.

As part of its new corporate responsibility goals, the parent company of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman plans to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent, water usage by 10 per cent and waste in its North American corporate arm by 25 per cent and recycle 75 per cent of its packaging by 2025.

The company also aims to source 90 per cent of the leather it uses from eco-friendly tanneries and achieve 95 per cent traceability of its raw materials to ensure a transparent supply chain.

  • India To Be Lead Market For Third Generation Renault Duster

India To Be Lead Market For Third Generation Renault Duster

The second generation of the Renault Duster will not be coming to India. After months of speculation, we can now confirm this news. But its not curtains for the popular brand in the country. After all the Renault Duster has sold almost 200,000 units in India since it debuted in 2012. Sources close to the development at the company’s global headquarters in France have told carandbike that India is likely to be the lead market for the development of the third generation Duster.

So far it is Eastern Europe that has played as the led market since the Duster is a Dacia product – Renault’s Romanian subsidiary. But given the regulatory changes and electrification that most European markets will switch to, the Duster’s next generation is likely to be more relevant to India and Latin America. Given India’s frugal cost base, and Renault’s investments in R&D in India, the 3rd generation Renault Duster will therefore be designed and engineered primarily in India.

So in the meanwhile, Renault will be giving the current Duster another massive update and facelift. This will cover styling and equipment. After all the Duster remains a very powerful nameplate and popular car in India. It has won several accolades, including our 2013 Car of the Year award too. It takes on the likes of the Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio. It will now need the aforementioned updates even more urgently, since the segment will get even more competition with the Kia SP /Trazor and MG Hector also entering the space. Expect the facelift to launch before Diwali this year.

  • Macpac expands more with Adventure Hubs

Macpac expands more with Adventure Hubs

Super Retail Group’s outdoor retail chain Macpac has opened nine new ‘Adventure Hub’ stores, further expanding the brand’s reach across Australia to 34 locations.

Five of the new format stores are located in Victoria, and are buoyed by a new store in NSW, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT.

The Adventure Hub format combines Macpac’s full range with a curated selection of apparel, equipment and accessories from brands such as Patagonia, Yeti and Merrell.

Macpac chief executive Alex Brandon said the business was excited about the potential the Adventure Hubs format offers.

“We set out to create Australia’s premium destination for outdoor product and adventure advice, and I think we’ve achieved that aim in these first nine stores,” Brandon said.

“The Adventure Hubs offer the full range of Macpac gear alongside other world-class outdoor brands…supported by a friendly, knowledgeable team ready to give everyone adventure advice.”

Macpac’s Adventure Hubs also feature services to make preparing for a trip easier on customers, such as providing packing lists to ensure they don’t forget anything they might need, expert pack-fitting by Macpac team members, world maps to help envision the next big trip, as well as a mini-library providing further travel inspiration.

Former Super Retail Group chief executive Peter Birtles previously said there was potential for the Macpac brand to grow to 75 locations across Australia and New Zealand, with an additional 20 larger format locations.

However, Birtles also noted there was a significant future for the business online, rather than through constant store roll-outs.

“We certainly see that this is a market that has strong opportunity in terms of digital, and so we’d anticipate a high component of the business coming from a digital channel,” Birtles said.

  • KTM 125 Duke Bookings Open In India

KTM 125 Duke Bookings Open In India

In a surprising move, KTM India is likely to introduce the 125 Duke in India by the end of the year in the country. KTM dealerships in Mumbai and Pune have confirmed to carandbike that they are accepting bookings for the new entry-level street-fighter at a token amount of ₹ 1000. While the launch date has not been officially announced yet, reports suggest the launch is likely to happen by December 2018. Deliveries will commence soon after the launch. This will be the updated KTM 125 Duke that was revealed at the end of 2016 and shares its styling with the KTM 250 Duke. The naked motorcycle will also be the most expensive 125 cc offering to go on sale in the country.

Power on the KTM 125 Duke will come from the 124.7 cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine tuned for 15 bhp and 12 Nm of peak torque. The motor is paired with a 6-speed gearbox. The bike comes with USD forks up front and a monoshock suspension setup at the rear, while braking performance comes from a 300 mm front and 230 mm disc at the rear.

Internationally, the 125 Duke is offered with ABS as standard, which could be skipped on the India-spec model since it is not mandatory for motorcycles below 125 ccc. Moreover, the bike will get a price advantage with the absence of ABS. The bike is likely to get CBS (Combined Braking System) instead, which is a lot cheaper in comparison. The TFT screen that is offered on the KTM 390 Duke is also likely to be given a miss to keep costs in check.

It is to be noted that the KTM 125 Duke was always intended to be an export-only offering ever since KTM commenced operations in India. While the motorcycle benefits from the same cycle parts as its older siblings, it also emerges as a more expensive offering compared to other “premium” 125 cc motorcycles. In Europe, the 125 Duke is largely targeted at A1 license holders with the government restrictions in place, making it a good-looking, fun-to-ride 125 cc bike for young buyers.

In India, the 125 cc segment is seen largely as a commuter segment for anyone looking for more power without compromising on efficiency. The KTM 125 Duke clearly does not belong to that segment, but could just be a lucrative choice for those looking at a fun-to-ride urban runabout. In terms of competition, the 125 Duke will compete against the Yamaha YZF-R15 V3, Yamaha FZ 25, Bajaj Pulsar NS 200 and the likes. So, yes, prices are likely to be around ₹ 1.50 lakh (on-road), which will make it about ₹ 20,000-30,000 cheaper than the KTM 200 Duke.
