    AirAsia India In Expansion Mode, Adds New Aircraft And Route

    Low-cost carrier AirAsia India has inducted a new aircraft (Airbus A320) to its fleet taking the total to 12. Focusing on its expansion plans, the airline has announced a new Hyderabad-Jaipur route which will be operational from September 1. AirAsia India has also added additional flights on Bengaluru-Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata-Bhubaneshwar routes “keeping in mind the government’s vision for regional connectivity,” it said in a release. The new AirAsia India aircraft will be stationed in Bengaluru, it added.

    “We received great reception in less than a month of starting the operations to Bhubaneshwar and are happy to intensify by adding another flight. We strive to provide connectivity to India’s key and under-served routes,” AirAsia India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Amar Abrol said.

    The airline currently flies to 16 destinations with its hubs in Bengaluru, New Delhi and Kolkata covering Kochi, Goa, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Pune, Guwahati, Imphal, Vizag, Hyderabad, Srinagar, Bagdogra, Ranchi and Bhubaneswar.

    Meanwhile, AirAsia announced the launch of direct flights between Tiruchirappalli and Bangkok at starting fares of Rs. 3,399 for a one-way journey. “AirAsia plans to continually penetrate the Indian market in the latter half of 2017 as it is a major market with great growth potential, especially as Bangkok and Thai cities have proven popular destinations for Indians,” Thai AirAsia, Commercial Director, Santisuk Klongchaiya said.

    Booking of tickets started from July 31 and will be open till August 13 for travel between September 29 and August 28, 2018. Currently, AirAsia offers direct flights to Thailand from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and Kochi.

    Cebu Pacific links up with KLM AFI to service expanding fleet

    Gokongwei-led budget airline Cebu Pacific (CEB) has chosen Air France Industries KLM Engineering and Maintenance (AFI KLM E&M) to provide maintenance support for its expected new fleet of Airbus A320s .

    “This is our first agreement with Cebu Pacific and also our first component support contract in the strategic Philippines market,” said Gery Mortreux, Executive Vice President of AFI KLM E&M in a statement released.

    The selection of AFI KLM E&M came following a call for tenders by CEB in September last year for the carrier’s expanding fleet of Airbus passenger jets .

    The long-term contract covers a fleet of over 40 Airbus A320-family aircraft, and encompasses full component support and solutions, including repairs and local pool access to maximize aircraft availability for both CEB’s A320s and its future A321neos.

    The A321 neo (new engine option) is a variant of the A320 that features a more efficient engine and more aerodynamic refinements.

    CEB currently has a fleet of 59 aircraft, comprised of 4 Airbus A319s, 36 Airbus A320s, 7 Airbus A330s, 8 ATR 72-500, and 4 ATR 72-600 aircraft. The average age of its fleet currently stands at 4.94 years.

    The airline also expects to take delivery of 45 brand-new aircraft as part of its fleet renewal program composed of one brand-new Airbus A330, 32 Airbus A321neos, and 12 ATR 72-600s

    All told, the new aircraft will bring the CEB fleet to 85 by 2021.

    CEB’s local rival, flag carrier Philippine Airlines (PAL), is also in the process of upgrading its fleet headlined by two new Boeing 777–300ERs set to arrive in December 2017 and January 2018, the airline announced over the weekend.

    Along with that, it is also expecting the arrival of the Q400 Next Generation turboprops for domestic flights starting in July 2017, and the first of 6 new A350-900s expected to arrive in 2018.

    Cebu Pacific gets its 3rd ATR 72-600 aircraft

    In a statement, Cebu Pacific said the new high capacity aircraft as delivered to its wholly owned subsidiary Cebgo on Feb. 3.

    The new ATR 72-600 will be used for the two new routes to be launched on Feb. 15 — Manila to Masbate and Manila to Tablas.

    “We are glad to take delivery of another brand-new ATR 72-600, especially since this is the first to have the titanium seats from Expliseat installed. This aircraft therefore combines reduced seat costs while optimizing comfort for passengers,” Cebgo President and CEO Alexander G. Lao was quoted as saying in a statement.

    Cebu Pacific’s aircraft fleet has an average age of 4.92 years, which the airline says is one of the youngest around the world.

    It currently operates a 58-strong fleet made up of four Airbus A319, 36 Airbus A320, seven Airbus A330, eight ATR 72-500, and three ATR 72-600 aircraft. Starting this year to 2021, the budget carrier expects to receive one more brand-new Airbus A330, 32 Airbus A321neo, and 13 ATR 72-600 aircraft.

    Cebu Pacific planes use world’s lightest aircraft seat

    Cebu Pacific, through its wholly owned subsidiary Cebgo, has chosen the world’s lightest aircraft seat, Expliseat, for its ATR 72-600 aircraft.

    The Titanium seat will be installed on all 16 aircraft, two of which are already being utilized by Cebu Pacific. The lighter seat is expected to help decrease fuel burn while allowing the carriage of more guests and cargo on board.

    South Korea, Indonesia to cooperate to sell aircraft globally

    Korea Aerospace Industries, the country’s sole aircraft manufacturer, said Wednesday it had signed an initial agreement with an Indonesian company to sell its products in the global market.

    In the 2016 Indo Defence Expo and Forum set to run from Wednesday through Saturday in Jakarta, KAI and PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) agreed to carry out joint marketing to export aircraft in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, KAI said in a statement.

    “The two companies will expand their cooperation in passenger carriers, military aircraft and aerospace businesses,” KAI Chief Executive and President Ha Sung-yong said in the statement.

    Under the pact, KAI aims to export the KUH-1 Surion utility helicopters to Indonesia as its military is expected to gradually replace the aging fleet of 200 choppers. It will help the PTDI improve its aircraft maintenance capabilities, and the PTDI will help KAI win local projects in aircraft maintenance, repairs and operations, it said.

    The two aircraft companies also plan to jointly develop unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and promote their aircraft in global markets through joint marketing, KAI said.

    Indonesian Aircraft Maker Showcases N219 Cockpit Simulator

    Indonesian aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is showcasing its new product, N219 cockpit simulator, at the Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 being held from September 8 – 11.

    “We are showcasing CN235 model and N219 cockpit simulator,” the spokesperson of PTDDI, Irland Budiman, said on Friday.

    The simulator is the main attraction at the PTDI booth as visitors are allowed piloting the N219 and fly as if they are in N219.

    Irland said N219 was included in the booth of best innovation products created by Indonesian human resources.

    N219 is a multi-purpose twin-engine aircraft designed to be operated in remote areas. It is a developed version of NC212, produced by PTDI under CASAs license.

    Indonesia Business & Development (IBD) Expo 2016 is witnessing the participation of 118 companies with 700 subsidiaries and 1,100 local government enterprises.

    The event, which features the BUMN (the state-owned enterprises) awards, an exhibition, an international conference, seminars, and many other programs, is being held under the theme: State-owned Enterprises are Agents of Development.

    The Expo is a platform to promote and market various innovative products as well as an opportunity for stakeholders to explore investment opportunities.

    AirAsia to lease two aircraft from Indonesia AirAsia Extra

    AirAsia Bhd has entered into a wet lease agreement with PT Indonesia AirAsia Extra (IAAX) to lease two Airbus A330 widebody aircraft for US$12.9mil (RM52.5mil).

    In a filing with Bursa Malaysia on Tuesday, AirAsia said one aircraft would be leased from Sept 16, 2016 till March 15, 2017 for US$9.8mil (RM39.9mil).

    The other’s lease would be from Oct 1, 2016 till Nov 30, 2016 for US$3.1mil (RM12.62mil), it said.

    AirAsia said the leasing was due to operational requirements.

    “The lease of the aircraft is in the form contained in the agreement which shall include the flight crew, all maintenance of the aircraft and insurance,” it said.

    AirAsia said the agreement provided up to additional six crew sets daily to AirAsia’s manpower supply.

    “Additionally, extra capacity from the A330s allows AirAsia to rationalise its network by reducing flight frequencies, which results in lesser crew requirement,” it said.

    It said the additional capacity from A330s will also allow for AirAsia to overcome slot constraints in some airports as well as enable AirAsia to better manage its network.

    “For routes with low load factor, AirAsia could reduce frequency, thus reducing fixed costs required to operate them. Whereas additional capacity could be added for routes with high load factor to capitalise on the high demand,” it said.

    Garuda signs 1 billion pound deal with Roll Roys

    The nations flag carrier PT Garuda Indonesia and British aircraft engine maker Roll Roys signed a 1 billion pound cooperation agreement here on Tuesday.

    “The results of the meeting between President Jokowi (Joko Widodo) and Prime Minister David Cameron included the agreement between Garuda and Roll Roys worth 1 billion poundsterling,” British Ambassador to Indonesia Moazzam Malik said here on Tuesday.

    Garuda would buy 14 units of aircraft produced in Britain and other European countries, Moazzam said after the meeting between Jokowi and Cameron.

    The units to be produced in Britain will use Roll Roys engines, he said.

    Under the agreement, Garuda would send mechanics and technicians for training in Roll Roys.

    The ambassador said that Jokowi and Cameron also discussed issue of extremism, adding that Cameron asked Indonesia to play a greater international role in controlling radicalism.

    Mentawai to have airport to accommodate wide bodied aircraft

    Expansion of the Rokot airport on the island of Mentawai off West Sumatra is to be completed in 2019 to accommodate wide bodied aircraft.

    West Sumatra Vice Governor Nasrul Abit said the Rokot airport which has been in operation since 1980 is being expanded and modernized.

    The expansion of the airport is important for tourism development in the Mentawai island district, Nasrul said here on Tuesday.

    “Construction is expected to be finished in 2018 and it would be operational in 2019,” he said.

    Currently the project is still in the process of land clearing and preparation of analysis on environmental impact (Amdal), he said.

    Regent of Mentawai islands Yudas Sabaggalet said the district administration is set to finish the construction of the airport as scheduled to facilitate tourist transport to that district.

    Yudas said the district administration is also building Trans Mentawai roads in four major islands in Mentawai including Siberut, Sipora, Pagai Utara and Pagai Selatan.

    The roads are 170 kilometers on the island of Siberut, 105 kilometers on the island of Sipora, 110 kilometers on the island of Pagai Utara and 85 kilometers on the island of Pagai Selatan.

    The fund for the road construction is partly from the state budget and the rest from the regional budget, Yudas said.

    In addition, the district administration would build power generating plants under the program of Mentawai Terang (Bright Mentawai) and develop internet service facility in cooperation with the state telecommunication company PT Telkom.

    “All the facilities are expected to bring greater modernity to the islands and improve the welfare of the people,” Yudas said.

    A Mentawai Wonder Festival 2016 would be held at the Mapadegat beach in the sub-district of Sipora Utara to promote the culture of Mentawai to attract more tourist to the island.

    The festival will be held from April 19 to 24 highlighted with international surfing competition which is expected to draw 64 surfers from Australia, the United States, South Africa , Japan, Republic of Fiji and the Philippines.
