Kering to celebrate new sales record

In a “phenomenal” result, global luxury group Kering had record operating revenue last year, driven in large part by the popularity of Gucci.

Kering’s income totalled €15.4 billion (US$19 billion), up 25 per cent as reported or 27.2 per cent on a comparable basis. Revenue from luxury activities was up 27.5 per cent as reported, or 29.9 per cent on a comparable basis, while for sport and lifestyle activities, revenue was up 12.8 per cent as reported or 14.7 per cent on a comparable basis.

Describing it as a phenomenal year, chairman/CEO François-Henri Pinault says the group created more than €3 billion in extra revenues in a single year, and generated more than €1 billion in additional EBIT.

In a performance “nothing short of spectacular”, Gucci was amplifying its desirability across all markets.

“Saint Laurent is on a rapid growth track, while Bottega Veneta pursues its redeployment. Balenciaga is charting an impressive development trajectory, and our other luxury brands are experiencing positive momentum,” says Pinault.

Revenue for luxury activities topped €10 billion last year, up 29.9 per cent year on year based on comparable data. Comparable growth was up 44.6 per cent for Gucci and 25.3 per cent for Yves Saint Laurent.

  • Balenciaga’s Platform Crocs sold out in a blink of an eye

Balenciaga’s Platform Crocs sold out in a blink of an eye

In October 2017, Balenciaga unveiled an official footwear collaboration with Crocs on the runway in Paris. The Crocs, naturally, divided opinion.

Critics thought that Balenciaga was trying too hard and collaborated for the wrong reasons, while others might not have loved the design but appreciated the attempt at something different.

Now, several months on, the Balenciaga Platform Clogs are officially available for pre-order on sites like Barneys New York.

Just moments after Balenciaga x Crocs’ Platform Clogs were made available to pre-order online, both pairs in the drop, sold out.

They come in two colors, pink and “toast,” which is more like a dark tan color. A rather genius customization option in the form of pins can be attached to the perforated upper.

Retail is $850 because, well, they’re still Balenciaga, so if you’re flush with cash and want to be what might resemble a walking meme, head to Barneys via our links below to secure yourself a pair. In the likely even that the links lead to an unavailable page, be sure to stay tuned as we will update you as soon as the collaboration becomes available again.

  • Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga is the hottest fashion label

Balenciaga has overtaken Gucci as the hottest fashion label, according to the latest Lyst Index.

The index draws on data analysis by fashion-search platform Lyst in conjunction with the Business of Fashion website. The 4.5 million data points analysed include sales, searches and consumer perceptions of 5 million products and 12,000 brands.

Its result is despite Louis Vuitton, Hermes and Gucci being named best fashion brands globally just last month by Interbrand consultancy.

Ranking the world’s hottest brands and top-selling products, the Lyst Index ranked Gucci first in this year’s second quarter, followed by Kanye West’s Yeezy and Balenciaga. However, the Spanish fashion brand continued to rise, displacing Gucci in the third quarter, with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White rising to third – a jump of 31 places in three months.

Lyst says Balenciaga’s rise was because of a new logo and the Colette residency in Paris keeping the brand top of mind “while Demna Gvasalia continues to design products that drive the fashion narrative online”.

Additionally, the platform praised Gucci for being a “consistent performer”, reports High Snobiety.
Rounding out the top 10 are Vetements, Givenchy, Valentino then Saint Laurent, while Stone Island leaped from 41st to eighth, followed by Moncler (previously 20th) and finally Raf Simons (previously 21st).

Lyst Index also looked at the most influential rappers in fashion for the quarter, listing (in order) Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Pharrell Williams, Cardi B, Drake and A$AP Rocky.

    Balenciaga opens Osaka pop-up

French fashion maison Balenciaga has opened a new pop-up store in Osaka, adding to the five standalone boutiques already retailing in the Japanese city.

The Parisian label has its sights set on pushing its newest ‘it’ handbag – the Bazar Shopping Bag – onto the Japanese clientele.

The new Osaka pop-up shop will house the original Bazar Shopping from the latest collection, as well as holiday and resort versions. Also for sale are pouch and wallet versions of the bag.

The colourful tote bag, designed by Demna Gsvalia, featured in Balenciaga’s Autumn/Winter 2016 collection. The Bazar Shopping Bag — already a hit with fashionistas such as Pernille Teisbaek, the co-founder and creative director at Social Zoo Direct — is part of Gvsalia’s first accessory line since taking the helm of Balenciaga this year.

Despite being compared to a heavy-duty laundrette carryall, the Balenciaga accessory retails for a whopping £975 per unit and has been hailed a best-seller on major fashion e-platforms Net-a-Porter and MatchesFashion.com.

Balenciaga is known for ‘it’ bags, since the Arena handbag, designed by Nicholas Ghesquire over ten years ago.

The pop-up shop is located within a portion of the Hankyu department store in Osaka. It is open from now until the end of December.

  • Indonesia leading charge, says Asia Luxury Index

Indonesia leading charge, says Asia Luxury Index

Indonesians have become Asia’s foremost online buyers of luxury goods, according to the latest Asia Luxury Index.

Amid difficult economic conditions, online sales of luxury goods in Indonesia have grown by 84 per cent, according to the index, which draws mainly on the sales data of Reebonz, a Singapore-based eCommerce platform for luxury products.

Reebonz Indonesia executive manager Anggono Wijaya says social media, digital marketing and collaborations with influencers and young designers were among the main reasons behind the ballooning sales.

Senior marketing manager Bernard Widjaja Ng says the group of luxury consumers is evolving and expanding as luxury is no longer just for the select few. “With growing affluence and accessibility, more consumers can readily buy luxury goods.”

He says consumers have also become younger, with 21-year-olds starting to buy luxury goods. “There is a shift in an economical class of buyers, as people from the B-level economy have started to buy luxury goods.”

Accounting for 62 per cent of online transactions in Asia are bags, with Balenciaga, Fendi and Longchamp topping the brand list in Indonesia. The report also notes an 87 per cent rise in shoe sales and a 39 per cent increase in timepiece sales.

It also notes a shift in buying trends, with a 30 per cent increase in pre-owned luxury goods sales.

Topping the brand list in this category are bags and shoes by Chanel, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Prada.

Starting as a luxury product retailer in Singapore, Reebonz has expanded via eCommerce platforms with offices in Indonesia, Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan.

  • Gucci America follows Michael Kors out of IACC

Gucci America follows Michael Kors out of IACC

Gucci America has become the second brand to quit the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition(IACC) since the US-based group allowed Chinese eCommerce giant Alibaba to become a member last month.

Describing Alibaba as “our most dangerous and damaging adversary”, Michael Kors left the IACC just after the Washington, DC group let Alibaba on board.

Gucci, along with other Kering Group brands like Balenciaga, is suing Alibaba in New York, accusing it of knowingly encouraging and profiting from the sale of counterfeit goods on its eCommerce platforms. Alibaba has dismissed the suit as “wasteful litigation”.

“The IACC stands by its decision and is committed to lean into the future and lead a coalition of the willing,” IACC president Robert Barchiesi says. “Whether it’s payment processors or online marketplaces, the choice is clear, they must be an integral part of the solution.”

Alibaba’s membership is in a special category without voting rights, originally created when eBay asked to join the coalition, which it has not done as yet.

Alibaba says its membership will allow it to work more closely and effectively with brands to enforce intellectual property rights.
There are more than 250 members of the IACC including Apple, Chanel and Cisco Systems.

Meanwhile, Alibaba Group boss Jack Ma has been confirmed as the IACC’s spring conference speaker.
