  • Alibaba to open e-commerce hub in Belgium

Alibaba to open e-commerce hub in Belgium

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd has signed an agreement with the Belgium government to launch an e-commerce trade hub, which will include investments in logistics infrastructure. The project is part of Alibaba’s Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP), and Belgium is the first European country to join the project following similar agreements in Malaysia and Rwanda.

Alibaba’s logistics arm, Cainiao, will lease a 220,000 square meter logistics port at Belgium’s Liege airport as part of the deal and invest an initial 75 million euros ($85 million) in the project set to begin operations in 2021, it said.

“We strongly believe that under the eWTP, we will open up the huge potential for European businesses to reap the benefits of global cross-border trade, especially into the China market,” Alibaba CEO Daniel Zhang said in a statement.

Alibaba’s eWTP is designed to help countries reduce trade barriers for e-commerce trade, including lowering or eliminating tariffs and speeding up customs clearance.

The company has previously said the project is designed to “compliment” the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Alibaba is expanding the project to Europe amid wider trade tensions, which have forced the firm to back down from efforts to tap U.S. sellers.

Recently, Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma said previous plans to create a million jobs in the United States had been put on ice due to trade tensions, according to Chinese state media.

It offers air and ground links to a broad number of European destinations, as well as direct intercontinental connections to the Americas, Middle East and Africa.

Koen Gouweloose, Vice President of DHL Brussels Hub, said: “This new hub is a great example of some of the latest state-of-the-art logistics technology. It allows us to process even more packages even more quickly and efficiently. As part of DHL’s GoGreen program the new hub reduces the company’s ecological footprint by 768 tons of CO² per year, thanks to its more efficient sorting techniques and better insulation. It is also certified to the TAPA ‘A’ security standards.

  • Stella Artois launches a new pack and limited-edition design

Stella Artois launches a new pack and limited-edition design

AB InBev has developed limited-edition packaging for Stella Artois to coincide with the Christmas period.

The four-pack tote is designed to provide a new unwrapping ritual, with an easy-open tab running around the centre of the pack. The rounded edges and curves create a sleek, premium aesthetic, whilst the eye-catching red handle makes it easier to carry the tote from store to home, or seasonal gatherings.

The new packaging format will launch in Sainsbury’s and Ocado in time for Christmas, arriving in stores and online on 29 November.

The Stella Artois brand has a natural association and historic connection to the festive season; in 1926 The Artois Brewery in Belgium first crafted a festive beer as a Christmas gift to the people of Leuven. That special batch was the first to officially include “Stella” in its name. “Stella”, meaning star in Latin, pays homage to this original occasion, accompanied by a star on every bottle.

Continuing its celebration of the festive period, Stella Artois will launch its limited-edition Christmas design across varying formats*, featuring the gold star across packs. The 750ml Christmas Bottle will also make a return for 2017. Imported from Leuven, the home of Stella Artois, it is perfect for those Christmas sharing moments.

Matt Leadbeater, senior brand manager, Stella Artois, commented: “Stella Artois is the go-to choice for consumers looking for a quality experience, and the new packaging perfectly represents the premium brand persona.

“Stella Artois is synonymous with Christmas, with an authentic seasonal story to tell. We hope the unique, limited-edition design will get consumers even more excited for the festive period this winter.”

  • Vietnam fish exporters aim to crack Europe

Vietnam fish exporters aim to crack Europe

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) is showcasing Vietnamese seafood products at the Seafood Expo Global, which is being held in Brussels, Belgium, from Tuesday to Thursday. In a 264sq.m. booth, the association introduced Viet Nam’s seafood specialties, including tra fish (known as pangasius), shrimp, tuna and tilapia fish, as well as cattle fish, octopus and dried seafood products, all of which come from 25 Vietnamese seafood producers and exporters.

The pavilion attracted foreign businesses, which shared experiences in trading aquatic and seafood products.

In the context of a pangasius crisis in Spain and the Carrefour supermarket chain ceasing to sell Vietnamese pangasius, VASEP and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development held a press conference at the exhibition to provide clear information about Viet Nam’s pangasius processing and exports to European partners.

In his interview with Vietnam News Agency correspondents, VASEP general secretary Truong Dinh Hoe said the press conference aimed to create a correct information channel to deal with the communication crisis on pangasius, targeted at increasing exports of Vietnamese aquatic and seafood products to Europe.

Alfons van Duijvenbode, a Dutch consultant, said European consumers have a bad impression of Vietnamese pangasius due to false information on social media.

In recent years, the consumption of Vietnamese pangasius has fallen in the EU, meanwhile other fish have maintained or even increased sales volum, he said.

He suggested the Vietnamese aquaculture industry interact more with consumers to provide them exact information about the products.

Head of Vietnamese Trade Office in Belgium Nguyen Canh Cuong said that the office had worked with local partners such as Foreign Trade Association to provide information to Belgium businesses and consumers.

Also at the event, Viet Nam held other trade promotion activities, including a dialogue for shrimp value chains and a programme for visitors to try Vietnamese seafood.

Seafood Expo Global, the largest of its kind globally, drew the participation of over 1,600 exhibitors from 77 countries and territories this year.

It is expected to attract more than 26,000 visitors and exporting and trading enterprises from 144 nations and territories.

  • Belgium brewery apologizes to Hindus for using Lord Ganesha as beer icon

Belgium brewery apologizes to Hindus for using Lord Ganesha as beer icon

Belgium brewery, The Musketeers, has apologized for using Lord Ganesha as icon representing its Jack’s Precious IPA beer. The translation of the brewery’s (headquartered in Ursel, East Flanders) statement in Dutch, responding to criticism by Hindu community, published on their website, said: “The brewery wants to apologize when they unwittingly hurts a community”; and added that the beer label “in no way intended to hurt anyone”.

Hindu statesman Rajan Zed, who spearheaded the protest against the Lord Ganesha’s image on Jack’s Precious IPA beer label, in a statement in Nevada today, welcomed the brewery’s apology, calling it a step in the positive direction.

Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, indicated that in the same spirit, the brewery should immediately withdraw image of Lord Ganesha from the beer label, which was highly inappropriate.

If the Musketeers brewery continued to use Lord Ganesha icon on their beer, they were thinking of approaching the Commission on Marketing and Advertising of Belgium chapter of International Chamber of Commerce, Rajan Zed pointed out.

Lord Ganesha’s image carrying chef knife in one hand and sausage like object on the other and brewery’s trade mark symbol on his head continued to be shown on Jack’s Precious IPA beer label on brewery’s website today.

Zed had said that inappropriate usage of Hindu deities or concepts or symbols for commercial or other agenda was not okay as it hurt the devotees.

Rajan Zed had stated that Lord Ganesha was highly revered in Hinduism and was meant to be worshipped in temples or home shrines and not to be used in selling beer for mercantile greed. Moreover, linking Lord Ganesha with an alcoholic beverage was very disrespectful.

Hinduism was the oldest and third largest religion of the world with about one billion adherents and a rich philosophical thought and it should not be taken frivolously. Symbols of any faith, larger or smaller, should not be mishandled, Zed had noted.

In Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is worshipped as god of wisdom and remover of obstacles and is invoked before the beginning of any major undertaking.

Brewery claims that Jack’s Precious IPA (Alcohol: 5.9%, EBC: 20, IBU: 50), launched in March last, “has the character of a floral bouquet with a citrus accent” and is available in Belgium, the Netherlands, France and the United Kingdom.

  • Belgian King praises Indonesia`s economic development

Belgian King praises Indonesia`s economic development

“Indonesias economy is remarkable,” King of Belgium Philippe told President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) when they met at the Royal Palace in Brussels, the Belgian capital on April 21, 2016.

He has followed the economic development of Indonesia closely, and he gave high credit to the progress, King Philippe claimed.

He particularly expressed his support to the economic deregulation measures carried out by President Jokowi, who is expected to reveal his 12th economic stimulus package aimed at boosting investment and trade, in the very near future.

Belgium is Indonesias key partner, in terms of trade and investment.

Total trade between Indonesia and Belgium in 2015 reached US$1.67 billion, while investments amounted to US$7 million.

The European countrys investments in Indonesia include those in diverse fields, ranging from power generation to the cocoa processing industry.

Last March, the Belgian government sent a high-profile delegation to Indonesia, headed by Princess Astrid to strengthen bilateral economic relations, particularly in the fields of trade and investment.

Princess Astrid, as representative of King Philippe, headed a 301-member delegation to Indonesia from March 12 to 18, 2016.

In total, 127 companies and at least four ministers participated in the economic mission.

The delegation is the largest-ever Belgian mission to come to Indonesia, and this is a landmark in the growing ties between the two nations, the Belgian government said on its official website.

Some 25 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and business contracts between business associations of both countries were signed during Princess Astrids visit to Jakarta.

Jokowi and Princess Astrid, during their meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, on March 15, 2016, agreed that the two nations should step up economic cooperation.

The President expressed his optimism that Belgiums largest economic mission to Indonesia would help strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.

The Head of State also called for expanding interactions between the business communities of both nations, and for expanding market access for Indonesian products, such as footwear, rubber, textiles, electronics and furniture, to enter Belgium.

He also invited Belgian investors to start businesses in strategic sectors in Indonesia, such as infrastructure, telecommunications, the film industry, and raw materials.

However, in the meeting with the Belgian King in Brussels, President Jokowi conveyed Indonesias worries on several discriminative measures from EU countries to Indonesian Crude Palm Oil products.

“I believe Belgium will not take those discriminatory measures,” the President said.

He also expressed his appreciation and gratitude for the decision to select Indonesia as the guest country for the 2017 Europalia Festival, as well as for the invitation to attend the inauguration of the festival.

“The festival is an opportunity for Indonesia to show the richness of its culture. I hope Your Majesty will support us for the success of the event,” President Jokowi, who was accompanied by Coordinating Minister for the Economy Darmin Nasution, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno L.P. Marsudi, Minister of Trade Thomas Lembong, and Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, said.

Coinciding with the Presidents visit, a round-table meeting was organized and attended by CEOs of 15 Belgian companies in Brussels on April 21.

Many people in the audience expressed interest in gaining insights into infrastructure development in Indonesia.

Head of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Franky Sibarani and Chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Roesan Roslani briefed them on the progress of infrastructure development projects, such as seaports, toll roads, and airports.

Most of the participating companies have invested in Indonesia and planned to expand their investments.

“For instance, a company that produces steel fiber expanded its investment worth US$50 million in Karawang; a knife manufacturing company has planned to open a new plant in Bekasi; and a retail company has planned to expand its network,” Sibarani revealed.

Belgiums investment in the country reached $132 million during the 2010-2015 period, placing the nation in the 27th position on the list of Indonesias foreign investors, according to the BKPM data.

The European countrys investment commitment during the same period was recorded at $213.5 million comprising 64 projects.

Furthermore, the BKPM identified a Belgian firm, which is keen to invest US$574.5 million, or some Rp7.1 trillion, in seaport development.

The Belgian company had contacted a state-owned seaport operator to express its interest, Sibarani stated.

“The company has also urged the investment board to facilitate its plan, including coordinating with other related ministries or institutions,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, Trade Minister Thomas Lembong stated that a series of economic policy packages issued by the government had made Indonesia a favorite investment destination.

“The policy packages have made Indonesia more attractive to foreign investors,” Thomas Lembong, accompanying President Jokowi on a European tour that covers Germany, Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands, said.

The policy packages had boosted trade cooperation between Indonesia and European countries, the minister believed.

The Indonesian government has issued 11 economic policy packages over the past several months marked by massive deregulation.
