  • Daimler Says China Business Picks Up Again

Daimler Says China Business Picks Up Again

Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler has seen business stabilize in China after the country ended coronavirus lockdowns, a senior manager at the German carmaker told a newspaper on Sunday. Mercedes-Benz delivered a total of approximately 477,400 passenger cars worldwide between January and March. The report did not say how many of those went to customers in China, who bought 694,200 Mercedes-Benz cars last year, 29% of total sales. China is the largest market for the S-Class built in Sindelfingen. Normally several hundred vehicles roll off the assembly line in Sindelfingen every day.

Mercedes-Benz maker Daimler has seen business stabilize in China after the country ended coronavirus lockdown

“In China alone, we sold around 50,000 vehicles again in March. That makes us confident,”, said Markus Schaefer, a managing board member for production, told Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Starting Monday, cars are set to roll off Daimler’s assembly line again in Germany. The Sindelfingen and Bremen passenger-car plants will start production of E- and S-Class vehicles.”We won’t reach this number right away when production starts next week,” said Schaefer.

Daimler reported a plunge of nearly 70% in first-quarter operating profit on Thursday due to the pandemic and warned that the cash flow it uses to pay dividends would fall this year.

  • Mercedes-Benz India Sells 2386 Units In Q1 2020

    Mercedes-Benz India Sells 2386 Units In Q1 2020

Mercedes-Benz India announced that it managed to sell 2386 units in the January-March 2020 period. The company clocked these sales numbers even as it continues to face strong market challenges including the current lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The company already kick-started with its new car launches in January 2020 with the GLE and then we saw it showcase its upcoming product line-up at the Auto Expo 2020 in February. Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India commented, “We started 2020 on a high note and our existing, as well as newly launched products, continued to draw customer traction till the time sales came to a complete stop, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation. At Mercedes-Benz, we are doing our best to support all our stakeholders through varied initiatives and measures, so that all of us can emerge stronger than ever before, especially during this period of crisis.”

The company was the first carmaker in the country to make the transition to BS6 last year with the launch of the S-Class and now the company has made the complete transition to BS6 products. Though the GLC facelift, GLC Coupe and the GLE continue to rake in sales for the company, it’s the A-Class Limousine which was showcased at the Auto Expo in February that’s getting most of the attention. The company has said that it is ‘overwhelmingly popular and has already received a number of pre-bookings received for the car.

However, given the current lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Mercedes-Benz India’s focus is on strengthening its online presence. Therefore, the company is collaborating closely with its retail partners to jointly address this challenging situation and to offer them advice and support in order to best serve Mercedes-Benz customers. Customers can now book their cars online and also receive delivery of their cars at their doorstep.

  • 2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Teased

    2020 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Teased

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been one of the most successful models from Mercedes, globally. And for 2021, the company is all set to reveal the latest E-Class model. It was supposed to happen at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show but as the show stands canceled, Mercedes-Benz will be revealing the car digitally around the globe, very soon.

The company released a few teasers along the way and from the looks of it, the new E-Class does seem to be a good-looking car. The front end gets slight tweaks with new, sharply designed LED headlamps and a slightly revised grille. We expect some changes at the rear as well. In terms of powertrains, the new E-Class finally gets a hybrid engine setup, the details of which will be revealed later.

Expect the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class to get features similar to the current model such as a twin-screen setup, smartphone connectivity and of course, the MBUX infotainment system. Being a Mercedes, we also expect it to get a bunch of active and passive safety systems and a whole range of driver-assist systems as well.

Will the updated Mercedes-Benz E-Class come to India? We believe it will come sooner than later and once it does, it will take on its traditional rivals, the Audi A6 and the BMW 5-Series. Keep watching this space as the car will be revealed very soon.

  • Daimler Recalls 744,000 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles In The US For Faulty Sunroofs

Daimler Recalls 744,000 Mercedes-Benz Vehicles In The US For Faulty Sunroofs

German automaker Daimler AG said on Saturday it will recall 744,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the United States from the 2001 through 2011 model years because the sunroof glass panel could detach and pose a hazard. The large recall covers more two dozen vehicles from C-Class, CLK-Class, CLS-Class and E-Class model lines. The automaker said the bonding between the glass panel and the sliding room frame might not meet specifications and could lead to sunroofs detaching.

Owners who paid for repairs for the issue will be able to seek reimbursements from Daimler. A Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman said on Saturday he did not have a worldwide vehicle total for the recall.

Dealers will inspect the glass panel bonding and replace the sliding roof if necessary, the company said.

Last month, Mercedes-Benz USA agreed to a $20 million civil penalty over its handling of U.S. vehicle recalls after a year-long U.S. government investigation into 1.4 million recalled vehicles.

Under the terms of the settlement, the automaker will pay $13 million and faces another $7 million fine if it does not comply with the agreement. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the company failed to notify owners in a timely fashion in some recalls, did not submit all reports and did not launch at least two recalls in a timely fashion.

  • Mercedes-Benz Pushes Back US Launch Of Electric SUV Until 2021

Mercedes-Benz Pushes Back US Launch Of Electric SUV Until 2021

Mercedes-Benz has rescheduled the US launch of its first mass-market electric vehicle — an SUV known as the EQC to 2021. The SUV was introduced in Europe earlier this year, and it reportedly “generated high interest”, enough so that Mercedes’ parent firm Daimler made a “strategic decision to first support the growing customer demand” in Europe, Engadget reported on Tuesday.

The US is the second-largest car market in the world after China, but it is only on par with, and sometimes behind, Europe when it comes to sales of all-electric vehicles.

One factor driving the availability of cleaner cars in Europe is the strict emissions regulations package put in place by the European Union (EU), which requires automakers to reduce the emissions of their new vehicle fleets by 37.5 percent by 2030.

In contrast, President Donald Trump has spent the bulk of his presidency unsuccessfully trying to roll back Obama-era emissions regulations that are similarly meant to support the adoption of cleaner cars, according to The Verge.

Price of Mercedes’ EQC base model is expected to begin at $67,900 — less than the $74,800 Audi E-Tron and the $84,990 Tesla’s Model X.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLB To Be Launched Globally Before the End of the Year

Mercedes-Benz GLB To Be Launched Globally Before the End of the Year

Mercedes-Benz has officially said that its upcoming compact SUV will hit showrooms by the end of this year. The GLB will be the first compact luxury SUV to get three-row seating and could occupy seven passengers. The entry-level five-seater variant in Europe will be priced at € 37,746.80 (approximately ₹ 30.20 lakh in Indian currency) while the third row individual retractable seats will cost € 1309 (approximately ₹ 1.07 lakh) more.

The new GLB gets a range of Mercedes’ latest features and equipment including the new MBUX infotainment system and the comfort control functionality. Under the hood, it gets the OM 654q 2-litre, four-cylinder engine which already complies with the 2 RDE (Real Drive Emission) requirements coming into force in Europe in 2020. This also entails that the model is future proof for the Indian market and meets the upcoming BS6 emission norms as well. The 2-liter engine in the GLB belts out 218 bhp and 350 Nm of peak torque and is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, the Stuttgart based automaker will also unveil the hotter AMG version of the SUV. The Mercedes-AMG GLB will use the same 2.0-liter, Four-Cylinder, Turbocharged engine but we are still not sure if it will be tuned for the 35 nomenclature or for the even more powerful AMG 45 badge. The engine will churn out 298 bhp in the AMG 35 iteration while the power output will be upgraded to over 400 bhp in the AMG 45 iteration.

  • Mercedes-Benz Offers Subsidies To Retrofit Older Diesel Cars In Germany

Mercedes-Benz Offers Subsidies To Retrofit Older Diesel Cars In Germany

Daimler said on Tuesday Mercedes-Benz customers in Germany could apply for a 3,000 euro ($3,350) subsidy to upgrade the exhaust filters of older, polluting diesel vehicles, the latest effort among German carmakers to avoid inner-city bans.

Carmakers have been forced to consider upgrading exhaust treatment systems on older cars after German cities started banning heavily polluting diesel vehicles to cut fine particulate matter and toxic nitrogen oxides.

Daimler launched a website this week to process applications for financial support, as German motor authority KBA seeks to approve an after-market kit to upgrade the exhaust systems on various Mercedes diesel passenger vehicles.

The company has offered the subsidy to customers in German regions that face potential driving bans, the carmaker said. For a factbox about possible diesel bans, click:.

The first retrofit kit for Mercedes cars with “Euro 5” diesel engines, including the best-selling E220 and E250 models, has been developed by Dr Pley SCR Technology, a Bavaria-based, family-owned business.

German carmakers initially offered software updates and shied away from endorsing hardware retrofits, instead of lobbying for customers to buy new cars with cleaner engines.

But consumer groups pressured carmakers to endorse retrofits as a more cost-effective measure.

“We have known right from the start that retrofits are feasible and have now proved this to the carmakers,” said Thomas Steinbrueckner, head of development at Dr Pley SCR Technology.

  • Mercedes-Benz India To Hike Car Prices By 3% From August

Mercedes-Benz India To Hike Car Prices By 3% From August

Mercedes-Benz India has announced an increase in prices for select model range in India. With effect from August 2019, select Mercedes-Benz cars will see an upward revision in prices, up to 3 percent across the model range. While the company hasn’t shared the list of models that will see the price hike next month, the carmaker does mention that the current increase in customs duty on automotive parts and additional cess and excise duty on fuel has led to the price hike.

Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India said, “As the leading luxury automobile maker in India, we have been relentlessly working on offering the best of products and industry benchmark customer service and ownership experience. However, a hike in customs duty on automotive parts, compounded by an increase in excise duty, and cess on fuel have had a significant impact on our bottom line. We were left with fewer options, but to make some necessary price adjustments to our product range at the moment to offset the impact of the rising input costs.”

Last time the carmaker announced a price hike in India was back in September 2018, along with several other carmakers, after the value of the Indian Rupee reaches almost 73 compared to the US dollar.

Recently, Mercedes-Benz India also reported a sales decline of 18.60 percent in the Indian market in the first half of the calendar year 2019. The company has sold 6561 units in the January-June period this year against 8061 units which were sold in the same period a year ago.

  • Mercedes-Benz GLB All Set To Make Its World Debut

Mercedes-Benz GLB All Set To Make Its World Debut

Mercedes-Benz has dropped a teaser of its upcoming GLB and it’s all set to make it’s world debut on June 10, 2019. The GLB, as the name suggests is based on the B-Class and is built on the MFA2 platform, which underpins the latter. It will be positioned between the GLA and the GLC models. Spy shots of the car give us a peek into what the GLB will look like and the teaser confirms much of these details. The size shows that the GLB is likely to be a 7 seater model and it’s a far cry from being a baby G-Class as it was rumoured to be. The long hood, short overhangs, and the boxy rear end all point out to a GLB being a bigger SUV.

The upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLB is expected to be a family car like the B-Class so expect a spacious five-seater cabin with a large boot space, possibly above 500 litres. It’s said that Mercedes might even consider offering an optional third row in certain markets. In terms of design and styling for the cabin, we expect the GLB to take inspiration from the new-gen A-Class’ cabin, which was revealed last year.

Engine options are still not confirmed but, we expect the Mercedes-Benz GLB to get the same engine options as the new A-Class. It could also get the new engines that have been developed in partnership with the Renault-Nissan alliance. The GLB is also expected to get a new electronically controlled four-wheel drive system, but can only confirm that when the SUV make its official debut.

  • Next Generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior Leaked

Next Generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class Interior Leaked

Mercedes-Benz is readying the next generation of its flagship S-Class sedan and while we’ve seen test mules in the past, a leaked image of the interior have now made its online. The next generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class due to make its debut sometime in 2020 and going by the leaked image, the car appears future ready. Confirmed by earlier spy shots, the W223 S-Class replaced the dual infotainment screen with single unit for the instrument console and a massive vertically-stacked display for all other controls. The Tesla like touchscreen system replaces a tonne of switches on dashboard that gets a clutter-free appearance with sleek looking air-con vents and a new steering wheel. The leaked image also reveals the dual-tone treatment to the cabin in pristine while and black shades.

The new generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be based on the automaker’s MRA platform and will come with a range of six and eight cylinder petrol and diesel engines. There will also be an electrified version called – the EQ S – and will be based on the company’s new Modular Electric Architecture (MEA). The new electrified version is expected to sport a range of 500 km on a single charge, as the automaker’s new top-of-the-line electric saloon. Not to forget, there will be the Affalterbach versions too with the AMG-tuned S-Class drawing power from the 4.0-litre V8 bi-turbo motor that is likely to go hybrid.

In addition, the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class is expected to be offered in only the long-wheelbase guise globally. That said, do expect the Pullman and Maybach versions to follow suit packing in tech and comfort over the current W222 S-Class. It needs to be seen if Mercedes will continue with the Coupe and Convertible versions on the next generation. With respect to new tech, expect improved autonomous driving capability possibly up to Level 3; a new and updated version of the Airmatic suspension and more segment-first creature comforts on the offering.

In terms of design, the new S-Class is likely to get an evolutionary styling along lines of the new A-Class, CLS and the likes. The current version is one of the most gorgeous looking saloons out there, which really sets the benchmark for the new version. It is also likely to serve as the design inspiration for the next C-Class and E-Class models, when its time for their respective new life cycles.

More details on the new S-Class will be available in the months to come. A global debut will happen next year while sales globally should commence by 2021 or 2022, depending on the market. The W222 S-Class is assembled in India, and given the sheer demand for the flagship Mercedes, expect the new model to be locally assembled as well.

  • 2020 Mercedes-AMG A35 Sedan Breaks Cover

    2020 Mercedes-AMG A35 Sedan Breaks Cover

Mercedes-Benz dropped the curtains on the Mercedes-AMG A35 performance sedan ahead of its public debut at the Paris Motor Show in October this year. The sprightly luxury compact sedan gets the Affalterbach treatment sharing its underpinnings and powertrain with the A35 AMG hatchback, albeit now gets that small boot, making it slightly more practical. The good bit is that the A35 AMG sedan retains the performance of the hatchback churning out an identical 301 bhp from the same motor.

Visually, the Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan looks similar to the hatch, complete with the bold grille with the massive logo up front, and the sweptback LED headlamps. The wheelbase too remains the same at 2727 mm, while the extended boot is met with a coupe-like roofline that adds to the striking appeal of the model. The rear sports twin exhaust and a lip spoiler integrated into the boot, while the wraparound LED taillights are distinctive and light up the boot’s appearance, quite literally.

The cabin too is a direct lift from the A35 AMG hatchback. The sedan comes with the AMG flat-bottom, multi-function steering wheel and the extended digital cockpit with the split screen setup for the infotainment system that also uses the MBUX system. The A35 AMG comes with five driving modes, which changes the colour scheme inside the cabin according to the mode you select.

With respect to performance, the Mercedes-AMG A35 uses 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine that churns out 301 bhp on offer. The motor is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, while there are wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual shifts. The A35 also comes with 4MATIC All-Wheel Drive system that sends power to the front wheels but can distribute power to the back as well for a 50:50 split. Furthermore, the A35 comes with individual braking for each wheel, while the suspension is adjustable and can be tuned for comfort on the streets or for attacking corners on a race track.  The performance sedan can do the 0-100 kmph sprint in 4.7 seconds, which is the same as the hatchback.

The Mercedes-AMG A35 is slated to hit a number of markets by the end of this year including the US. However, it’s not clear if Mercedes-Benz will be bringing the performance sedan to India.

  • Mercedes-Benz Is Evaluating Electric Vehicles In India

Mercedes-Benz Is Evaluating Electric Vehicles In India

The FAME 2 scheme has brought cheers to the automakers in India. The Union Cabinet on February 28 allocated ₹ 10,000 crore to speed-up the development of the EV infrastructure in the country a major chunk of which will be channelised to set up fast-charging stations on a large scale. Many carmakers had already announced launching or at least evaluating the viability of electric vehicles in India beforehand. For instance, Audi has already decided to launch the e-Tron in our market and Porsche will be bringing the Taycan. While Mercedes-Benz was uncertain of EVs prospects in our country, FAME 2 has come as a silver lining for the company.

The German carmaker is finally doing a feasibility study for the EQ range in India and is looking at it as a potential product in the future. “We do the feasibility studies because we have to think of the future. The feasibility study is done for our entire portfolio. And the same happens now for the battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, we look into which models could be appealing to the customers, we look into where we think is the momentum developing and based on that we also start assessing our options. So it’s not that we wait and see, we look into the options by evaluating and that’s happening right now,” Martin Schwenk, Managing Director & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India told carandbike.

Schwenk agrees that the FAME 2 scheme is a step taken in the right direction but Mercedes cannot completely rely on the infrastructure and be late to the party. “Looking into the infrastructure, we cannot fully wait for the infrastructure because if we do that, it will take quite some time,” Schwenk said. That said, the newly appointed India head also feels that the FAME 2 scheme completely misses out on the plug-in hybrid models which have immense market potential given the fact that it brings the best of both the powertrains. “Electric infrastructure has sometime in India to develop which leads me to the question that should it be electric or plug-in? I would say that the plug-in has some opportunities here because you can do your daily commute basically by charging the car at home and then if you want to go on longer drives, you’re not limited by any infrastructure,” Schwenk added.

Mercedes-Benz has also been working extensively on plug-in hybrids as the company finds electrified models more flexible to own and run. The German carmaker has already expanded the electric range in its hybrid models to up to 70 km and is intending to take it over 100 km which should be sufficient for intra-city commutes. It doesn’t mean that the company has diverted its focus from electric vehicles and will have 10 electric models in its portfolio by 2022 including an electric iteration of the recently launched V-Class MPV.
