Starbucks Korea Closes for Sensitivity Training Following Historic Campaign Controversy

Following public disapproval over a marketing campaign, Starbucks Korea, operated by Shinsegae Group, has announced it will close all stores across the country at 3pm on June 22 for employee training related to historical awareness and social sensitivity. The coffee giant came under fire for a campaign last month that was reminiscent of a harsh military suppression of pro-democracy demonstrators in 1980, leading to significant sales losses.

    Training and Education Initiative

E-Mart, an affiliate of Shinsegae and owner of Starbucks Korea, initiated the promotional campaign named ‘Tank Day’ tumbler on the anniversary of the Gwangju Uprising on May 18. The historical event saw the military government deploy troops and tanks to quell pro-democracy rallies. In response to the backlash, staff and executives from Starbucks Korea and E-Mart division at Shinsegae will undertake the same training on June 17 at the group’s internal training center. Shinsegae Chairman Chung Yong-jin and affiliate CEOs will partake in a separate session on June 24. Shinsegae’s decision to implement these measures reflects the gravity with which it views the recent marketing misstep and signifies its dedication to avoiding similar situations in the future. Chairman Chung has previously issued a public apology for the controversy.

The training will be spearheaded by a history professor from Sungkyunkwan University and will delve into significant events in South Korea’s modern and contemporary history since the 1950s. A separate social sensitivity training, facilitated by a sociology professor from the same university, will focus on how businesses should take into account societal factors such as history, labor, gender, and human rights in marketing and all corporate activities.

    Introducing New Measures

This will be the first nationwide early closure for Starbucks Korea since its establishment in the country in 1999. In light of recent events, Starbucks Korea also intends to revamp its marketing approval procedures. This includes the introduction of a social-sensitivity checklist that covers history, commemorative dates, politics, disasters, military issues, gender, violence, and hate expressions.

As of the end of 2024, Starbucks Korea had more than 2000 stores in the country and is regarded as the leading coffee chain in terms of customer payments.

    Questions & Answers

What spurred Starbucks Korea to close its stores for employee training?
Starbucks Korea faced public criticism due to a marketing campaign reminiscent of a harsh military suppression in 1980, which led to a significant drop in sales. The company has decided to close all stores in the country for staff training on historical awareness and social sensitivity.

What will the training sessions entail?
The history awareness lecture will be conducted by a history professor from Sungkyunkwan University and will review significant events in South Korea’s modern and contemporary history. Another professor from the same university will conduct a separate social sensitivity training, focusing on how companies should consider societal issues in their operations and marketing activities.

What changes does Starbucks Korea plan to implement moving forward?
Starbucks Korea plans to overhaul its marketing approval procedures by introducing a social-sensitivity checklist that covers history, commemorative dates, politics, disasters, military issues, gender, violence, and hate expressions. • GAP’s Katseye Campaign Dominates Summer 2025: The Power Of Nostalgia And Celebrity In Retail Marketing

GAP’s Katseye Campaign Dominates Summer 2025: The Power Of Nostalgia And Celebrity In Retail Marketing

The summer of 2025 was a season marked by memorable retail marketing campaigns. One instance that caused a significant stir was the American Eagle campaign featuring Sydney Sweeney, a popular actress from the series “Euphoria”. Another campaign that went viral was Gap’s launch featuring the girl group Katseye. These campaigns created a major buzz in the retail industry, one after another, throughout the summer.

    The Most Effective Campaign

Among the numerous campaigns that ran during the summer, there was a particular focus on identifying the most effective in capturing consumers’ attention and boosting sales metrics. A consensus among four retail analysts and marketing experts identified the Gap campaign featuring Katseye as the standout event of the season.

According to Christine Russo, principal of Retail Creative and Consulting Agency (RCCA) and host of the retail podcast “What Just Happened”, the key themes of this summer were denim and celebrity. Three of the most viewed and impactful ads incorporated these elements: Gap x Katseye, American Eagle x Sydney Sweeney, and Levi’s x Beyoncé. Russo singled out the Gap x Katseye campaign as the most impactful, attributing its success to perfect cultural timing, and a blend of Gap’s nostalgic appeal with a modern, inclusive Gen Z appeal.

By capitalising on the celebrity status of an internationally recognised girl group, nostalgic storytelling, and an emphasis on inclusivity, Gap’s campaign stood out among the myriad denim campaigns that took place this summer.

Factors Contributing to Gap x Katseye Campaign’s Success

Melissa Minkow, CI&T’s global director of retail strategy, remarked that it’s rare for a viral campaign to be universally loved. Yet, she noted that Gap’s Katseye campaign received high praise across the board. A catchy, nostalgic song choice, captivating dancing, and versatile denim showcasing were contributing factors to its success.

Minkow explained that the campaign was creative, without veering into esoteric territory, and included elements that appealed to multiple generations, including Gen Alpha, Gen Z, millennials and Gen X. The choice of Katseye, a rising group adored by younger consumers, underlined the importance of choosing a celebrity who is not only globally recognised, but also culturally aligned with the brand.

Bethany Paris Ramsay, a brand strategist and marketing consultant, concurred with Russo and Minkow, stating that the Gap x Katseye campaign was arguably “one of the strongest retail marketing plays we’ve seen in years”. The campaign was able to feel both nostalgic and fresh; a combination that is incredibly challenging to achieve in today’s trend-weary market.

Ramsay compared the Gap x Katseye campaign favorably to American Eagle’s Sydney Sweeney ‘great jeans’ campaign, which she believed missed the cultural mark and felt forced. The Gap x Katseye campaign was not merely about selling a product, but about reaffirming brand identity in a manner that was aspirational yet accessible. This, Ramsay emphasised, is the aim of retail marketing at this time.

Performance of the Gap x Katseye Campaign Post-Launch

Russo highlighted post-campaign metrics as indicative of success. While both American Eagle and Gap campaigns went viral, the staying power of each was evident a few weeks after release.

Gap’s Katseye campaign generated 8 billion impressions across various social media platforms, as stated by Gap Inc CEO Richard Dixon. The campaign also prompted significant user-generated content, with fans recreating Katseye’s dance moves or making light-hearted parody videos. In comparison, the American Eagle Outfitters campaign dropped to much fanfare but did not have a lasting social impact.

Other Noteworthy Campaigns in Summer 2025

Despite Gap’s clear victory in the unofficial marketing battle of the summer, other campaigns also made notable impressions.

Melissa Minkow spotlighted Chamberlain Coffee’s collaborative campaign with Pinterest as another excellent marketing strategy for the summer. This was the first time either brand had collaborated with another, and the campaign benefited from the celebrity-brand synergy.

Neil Saunders, Global Data’s managing director, highlighted Nike’s recent “Why Do It?” campaign as another standout marketing moment of the summer. The campaign spoke to the younger generation’s fears and aspirations, showing that Nike was looking to create a stronger cultural connection.

    Questions & Answers

What made the Gap x Katseye campaign so successful?
One major reason for its success was its ability to blend nostalgia with a fresh appeal that resonated with both long-time Gap loyalists and a younger audience seeking authenticity and originality.

What were the post-launch metrics of the Gap x Katseye campaign?
Gap’s Katseye campaign generated 8 billion impressions across various social media platforms, indicating its widespread reach and impact.

Which other campaigns were highlighted as notable?
Other campaigns that stood out during the summer of 2025 included American Eagle’s featuring Sydney Sweeney, Chamberlain Coffee’s collaboration with Pinterest, and Nike’s “Why Do It?” campaign.

  • Samsung angers its customers by advertising the Galaxy Note 10 line in the wrong place

Samsung angers its customers by advertising the Galaxy Note 10 line in the wrong place

You just can’t escape the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ anywhere after Samsung introduced the new line this past week. And that happens to be true especially if you use an older Samsung Galaxy handset model with Bixby, Samsung Pay and the Samsung Push Service that disseminates updates and notifications meant for Samsung phones only. As spotted by a number of Twitter users including XDA’s Max Weinbach, those using the aforementioned features are being spammed by Samsung with ads for the new Galaxy Note 10 line.

Bixby implores users curious about the new phones to inquire about them. “Curious about the Note 10? Ask Bixby!” shouts the virtual digital assistant. A screenshot of Samsung Pay shows the mobile payment system offering users a closeup of the Note 10 at AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. Needless to say, the response from Samsung users is not positive especially since many of those spammed have already pre-ordered one of the new phones. And the manufacturer is making it harder to disable the spam it delivers via Bixby by forcing users to go into the Bixby settings to disable marketing notifications. To do this, open Bixby and tap on the menu icon on the top right. Tap on Settings and turn ‘Marketing Notifications’ to off.

We also have to wonder what Samsung is saying to those who shelled out big bucks for the Galaxy Note 9. What is the message here? Is it that the phone you shelled out $1,000 for last year is no longer capable of doing great things? We get that Samsung is proud of the new Note 10 line, but spamming its own customers seems more than a bit unsavory.
  • TikTok partners Malaysian handicraft organisations to promote local art

TikTok partners Malaysian handicraft organisations to promote local art

TikTok has paired up with the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation (Kraftangan Malaysia) and the National Craft Institute (NCI) to launch its #ilovearts campaign, in conjunction with National Craft Day 2019.

The campaign is in line with the 17th annual National Craft Day event organised by Kraftangan Malaysia under the theme “Culturising Craft in Lifestyle”, and aims to encourage the usage of local craft products in today’s lifestyle. The campaign also invites crafters to share their artistic talent and craftwork on TikTok, to further promote Malaysia’s unique craftsmanship to a global audience online.

The partnership also saw TikTok conducting a recent workshop at NCI on ways to leverage its platform for students to amplify their talent. The workshop focused on short video-creations and encouraged digital adoption to amplify Malaysian arts. The #ilovearts campaign runs until 11 March and participants stand a chance to win prizes worth RM6,500.

Donny Eryastha, TikTok’s head of public policy, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, said that the campaign resonates with its mission of capturing and presenting the world’s creativity, knowledge, and moments that matter by enabling everyone to be a creator.

“We are honoured to be collaborating with NCI and Kraftangan Malaysia through this initiative that aims to bring Malaysian art, heritage and tradition to the rest of the world,” Eryastha added.

NCI senior director Zainal Abidin Bin Che Pa said the industry recognises the role of technology in its effort to promote Malaysian’s unique craftsmanship globally.

“By partnering with a digital platform like TikTok, our crafters are able to share their expertise and talent with others from all over the world. We are hopeful that partnerships like this would open new opportunities for our crafters to go beyond our shores and obtain international exposure, resulting in a greater appreciation for Malaysian arts,” he added.

Recently, TikTok agreed to pay US$5.7 million to settle US Federal Trade Commission allegations that it illegally collected personal information from children. The violations were committed by the newly defunct Musical.ly app, which was folded under TikTok after it was was acquired by Chinese media firm ByteDance for around US$1 billion in 2017.

Positive result from anti-plastic campaigns by Starbucks, 7-Eleven

Starbucks Korea and 7-Eleven Thailand have announced positive results for their respective anti-plastic campaigns. A report revealed that the local Starbucks subsidiary has seen consumption of single-use straws cut by half in the months since introducing strawless lids on drinks without whipped cream or that do not need stirring. The initiative, introduced last November, has resulted in the monthly average of 15 million straws used across its coffee chain stores drop to 7.5 million per month. The company now only provides straws to customers who request them.

Aiming to further reduce straw usage by up to 70 per cent, Starbucks Korea is planning an online event to offer rewards to customers who upload pictures of drinks taken without using straws. It has also introduced paper straws for usage in some beverages.

    7-Eleven saves 169 million bags

Meanwhile, in Thailand, more than 169 million plastic bags have remained unused over the past two months at 7-Eleven stores, according to a report in local news site The Thaiger, the result of a management initiative to phase out their use. The move, which has been supported by local celebrities, encourages shoppers to refuse plastic bags or bring reusable bags to the store.

The reductions are reported to have saved the chain more than 33 million baht, which operator CP All Public Company will donate to a local hospital.

    All about perception?

Despite these reports, there have been growing concerns among critics in the media regarding the perceived environmental benefits of similar plastics initiatives worldwide.

The sippy cup lid adopted in Korea is identical to the design used in North American stores, which was shown in a Reason magazine report last year to use more plastic than the previous lid design and straw put together.

Plastic shopping bag initiatives similar to the one adopted by 7-Eleven have provoked skepticism among observers who point out that of all single-use plastic packaging used throughout supermarkets and convenience stores, the shopping bag is the only item that tends to be reused in the home.

A 2017 report in Australia’s journalism hub The Conversation called getting rid of plastic bags a windfall for supermarkets without much perceptible benefit to the environment. It reasoned that most alternatives that were recyclable ended up in landfills anyway.
