    SmarTone, Ericsson conduct Hong Kong’s first 5G demo

    Hong Kong mobile carrier SmarTone has joined force with Ericsson to conduct the city’s first demonstration of 5G technologies using millimeter wave spectrum. The pair also committed to launch a mobile technology innovation lab later this year, paving the way for the 5G deployment in Hong Kong.

    During the demo, which took place Wednesday at Ericsson’s office in Hong Kong, the companies achieved a data throughput of 5.7Gbps over a 5G prototype [pictured] through the use of 4×4 MIMO antenna technology in the 15-GHz band. The prototype, built by Ericsson, comprises a 5G base station, next-generation antenna and a test mobile station.

    SmarTone chief technology officer Stephen Chau said the operator will later upgrade the 5G prototype to support 8×8 MIMO antenna technology, which will double the transmission speed to over 10 Gbps.

    Michael Lee, CTO for Hong Kong and Macau at Ericsson, said the demo uses 400Mz of spectrum and OFCA has allocated a total of 612MHz of spectrum for all mobile operators in the city.

    SmarTone and Ericsson also demonstrated use cases for potential 5G applications, including a so-called “Human-IoT Interaction arm”, which allow humans to control a robotic arm remotely in real-time with 5G capabilities of low latency and high-bandwidth. Such applications, Chau said, could allow surgeons to conduct operations remotely using robots or be used in road accidents, operations/activities in scenarios unsafe for human presence.

    In another proof-of concept demo, a robot was connected to the cloud via a simulated 5G network, using real-time analytics to balance the robot with the latency set at 10ms. In future this application could be used for mission-critical apps, AI and intelligent automation like self-driving cars or real-time traffic system.

    While commercial 5G services won’t be ready by 2020 and standards are still to be ratified, the advent of 5G will open up a lot of opportunities for operators and allow for range of different applications, such as AI, VR/AR and the IoT-enabled world of real-time applications and services. The demo just offers a glimpse of 5G capabilities that will enable users to download a 4K movie in mere seconds or sit behind the wheel of a driverless car, Chau said.

    The executive said SmarTone’s innovation lab with Ericsson, which is expected to be ready in the middle of year, is aimed to facilitate cross-industry collaboration and develop potential 4.5G/5G use cases and vertical applications.

    The innovation hub will provide a platform for development in areas such as ICT and wireless convergence,  mobile, IoT and cloud, Chau said.

    “5G will herald a significant shift towards the hyper-connected and real-time world of IoT. Our innovation hub will see SmarTone and Ericsson forge collaboration with other industry and technology leaders to usher in a new era of mobile possibilities for consumers and businesses,” he noted.

    As part of its ongoing investment in 4.5G, SmarTone plans to roll out Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) network later this year, which will leverage existing licensed and unlicensed spectrum to enhance the operator’s LTE network to deliver up peak speeds up to 800Mbps.

    The company also plans to introduce a narrow-band IoT (NB-IoT) network with enhanced coverage later this year. Last week SmarTone forged a partnership with Cisco Jasper to launch IoT services in the city, in its latest attempts to tap the burgeoning IoT market.

    Last November SmarTone contracted Ericsson as its sole supplier for core and RAN equipment in a five year deal which aimed at paving the way for 5G  deployment.

    Singtel and Ericsson Partner to Power Tuas Port with 5G

    This partnership will support PSA Singapore’s plans to create the world’s largest fully automated port by the 2040s to meet the increasing demand for global transshipment.

    The existing automated vehicles at the port, like automated guided vehicles (AGVs), will be upgraded to 5G to improve real-time shipment tracking and streamline crane operations for smoother cargo transportation between ships and the berth.

    To facilitate these upgrades, Singtel will provide a network slice from its 5G network to offer dedicated resources such as high speeds, high bandwidth, and low latency for mission-critical applications. They will also create secure private networks tailored to the port’s security needs to prevent data breaches and unauthorized access. The implementation of 5G will enable PSA to handle 65 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually once Tuas Port is fully operational, nearly double the current capacity.

    Singtel’s CEO, Mr. Ng Tian Chong, noted that 5G’s capabilities will enhance communication and data transfer, achieving more efficient port operations. PSA’s Regional CEO, Mr. Nelson Quek, expressed that they are commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technologies like 5G to optimize port operations and respond to customer needs effectively.

    Apple, Ericsson kiss and make up while signing a new licensing deal

    Apple and Ericsson have agreed to settle a patent battle between the two which started in 2015 when both companies sued each other claiming that they each had patents infringed on by the other. Also part of the legal issues were disagreements that both sides had relating to licensing their 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies.

    Both companies buried the hatchet, and peace reigned until October 2021 when Ericsson sued Apple over 5G patent licensing. Two months later, Apple sued Ericsson and accused the networking and telecom firm of using “strong-arm tactics” to renew licensing over expired patents.

    Today’s deal means that Apple and Ericsson shook hands, ending a legal fight over royalty payments for using 5G wireless patents in the iPhone. Ericsson said that the settlement includes granting a global patent license to Apple and global cross-licenses for standard-essential cellular technology patents. Standard-essential patents are required in order for a licensee to meet certain industry standards and as a result, they are licensed using royalty terms that are Fair, Reasonable, And Non-Discriminatory (FRAND).
    In a statement, Ericsson said, “The settlement ends all ongoing patent-related legal disputes between the parties.” The battle between Apple and Ericsson intensified when negotiations on a new seven-year licensing contract covering telecom patents broke down. But that is all in the past after today’s announcement and Ericsson noted that the settlement will “strengthen their technology and business collaboration,” meaning, of course, partnerships between Apple and Ericsson.

    If you’re wondering how Apple ended up owning some intellectual property related to mobile wireless modems, you might recall that during the summer of 2019 the company purchased Intel’s modem business for $1 billion. The transaction gave Apple ownership of some industry standard-essential patents.

    Including the effects of the settlement with Apple, Ericsson forecasts fourth-quarter intellectual property rights (IPR) licensing revenues of $530.3 million-$578.5 million. Besides today’s agreement with Apple, that figure includes intellectual property rights with other licensees.
    You may have experienced some deja-vu when reading this news because it might have reminded you of the last-minute settlement Apple and Qualcomm signed off on back in 2019 just as opening arguments were wrapping up for a trial between the two tech giants. Apple paid Qualcomm a chunk of cash and both firms agreed to a six-year licensing agreement with a two-year option. And both sides signed a multi-year chipset supply contract.
    Apple has been working on its own modem chips which were expected to debut in next year’s iPhone 15 line. But issues surrounding two patents owned by Qualcomm mean that the latter will continue to supply the vast majority of iPhone 15 handsets with the important component. Had Apple been able to use its own modem chip, Qualcomm’s share of modem chips used on the iPhone 15 series would have been reduced to 20%.
    But this goes to show how important licensing intellectual property is to Apple, even when it plans on producing its own modem chip. Certain key technologies could be covered by patents and licensing them, even when dealing with the complex licensing arrangements that Qualcomm demands (remember, “no license, no chips”) can make or break a big project. Even a company like Apple can be stymied by a patent.
    Eventually, Apple and Qualcomm will reach an agreement, or Apple will figure out a way to design its modem chips without having to license certain patents from Qualcomm. But for now, it is Qualcomm’s modems that you’ll find inside the iPhone including 2023’s iPhone 15 family.

    Pay TV firm AVG appoints new CEO

    Vu Minh Tri, former CEO of Microsoft Vietnam, is the new CEO of pay TV firm AVG. Tri, 49, replaces Mai Duy Long, also 49, who helmed AVG for nearly two years. Tri, who became the CEO of Sony Ericsson Vietnam in 2006, has since taking top positions in the Vietnam operations of Yahoo, Qualcomm and Microsoft.

    He is now the CEO of telecom firm Asim Group and two other companies.

    State-owned MobiFone, the country’s third largest telecommunications firm, had made headlines early in 2016 when it announced it was breaking into the pay TV market with the acquisition of a 95 percent stake in AVG.

    But government inspectors concluded that the deal had violated public investment laws and caused an estimated loss of about VND7 trillion ($307 million) to the state budget.

    In 2019, several senior officials implicated in the MobiFone case were arrested and sentenced to varying jail terms.

    Ericsson, Telstra, and Qualcomm Technologies have achieved the highest uplink peak rate ever recorded on a commercial network during a live demo in Queensland, Australia. Together, they reached an uplink data speed of close to 1Gbps, paving the way for more seamless experiences in use cases such as live video streaming and social media content sharing.

    Using Ericsson’s New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC) and carrier aggregation software features together with a smartphone form-factor test device powered by Snapdragon® X65 5G Modem-RF System on Telstra’s network, this new uplink speed record marks another significant milestone for the ecosystem collaboration between the three companies.

    The high uplink peak rate was reached by combining the data rates from both mid-band and high band (millimeter wave) to fully utilize Telstra’s spectrum for improved user experience. The demo used Ericsson’s NR-DC software feature with uplink four-component carrier aggregation (UL 4CC CA), in which four contiguous carriers of 100MHz are combined, resulting in higher data speeds.

    Delivering uplink peak rates of close to 1Gbps will enable Telstra to more than double the current uplink throughput in its 5G network. This is particularly important for supporting applications and services that involve uploading vast amounts of data.

    Sibel Tombaz, head of product line 5G RAN, Ericsson, says: “We continue to pursue new and innovative ways of enhancing the end-user impact of 5G. An uplink speed of close to 1Gbps using NR-DC and four-component carrier aggregation is the latest in a series of 5G milestones we have achieved in collaboration with Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies.     Ericsson, Telstra and Qualcomm Technologies achieved the first on a commercial network in Queensland, Australia with a theoretical maximum uplink speed of 986 Mbps, integrating four-component 100MHz carriers of millimeter-wave, combining with the 100MHz of 3.6GHz spectrum. NR-DC was implemented with n78 and n258.

    The testing was conducted at Telstra’s 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) using Telstra’s commercial network resulting in a throughput of roughly 1Gbps, more than doubling the current uplink speed on the market. The smartphone form-factor test device powered by Snapdragon X65 was used with Ericsson Radio System’s Baseband 6648 and AIR 6488 for mid-band, which has been widely deployed in Telstra’s network, and Baseband 6648 with the AIR 5322 for high-band.

    Ericsson’s NR-DC software combines 5G frequency ranges below 7.125 GHz (mid-band, Time Division Duplex, TDD) and above 24.25 GHz (high-band TDD) and is now available for commercial deployment. The UL 4CC carrier aggregation software is slated to go commercial globally in the second quarter of 2022.

    Singtel and Ericsson have made a technology breakthrough in 5G standalone (SA) New Radio-Dual Connectivity (NR-DC), becoming the first in Southeast Asia to reach download speeds of 5.4Gbps by aggregating Singtel’s spectrum holdings across mid-band spectrum 3.5GHz and 28GHz mmWave. This milestone was achieved in a demo with Ericsson’s 5G radio access network products and solutions and dual-mode 5G Core network solutions, as well as a test device from Qualcomm Technologies powered by its Snapdragon X65 5G Modem-RF System.

    5G SA NR-DC technology, which combines mid-band and mmWave frequencies, further enhances Singtel’s 5G SA speed and capacity to enable high-performance and latency-sensitive applications, and stimulate innovative new use cases across business, industry and consumer ecosystems. Applications can range from cloud gaming, immersive media, AR, VR, XR to autonomous vehicles or robotic control. This new development will push the boundaries of 5G technology, combining different frequency bands across the networks, to fully utilise Singtel’s 5G assets for an enhanced user experience.

    Samsung files with ITC to ban U.S. imports of Ericsson’s 5G base stations

    Samsung on Thursday filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) demanding that U.S. imports of Ericsson’s 5G base stations be blocked. Just the week before, Ericsson had filed its own case with the ITC seeking to block U.S. imports of Samsung phones, tablets, and televisions. At the heart of this matter is a battle over a patent-licensing agreement that needs to be renewed. Cases are often filed with the ITC because, at an average of 15 months, final decisions are reached more quickly.

    Sammy’s argument is that Ericsson’s base stations, which connect mobile phone users to a network, employ equipment patented by Samsung. Both companies are arguing over whether a court in Texas or one in Wuhan will decide the royalties paid by Samsung for using Ericsson’s 4G and 5G inventions covered by the standard-essential patents. The latter are patents that a manufacturer must license in order for a product to comply with a technical standard. Rates charged for using these patents must be determined on a Fair, Reasonable, And Non-Discriminatory (FRAND) basis.

    Both companies have patents that the other one needs. Ericsson says that on balance it is owed money because it has more telecom patents than Samsung and the latter has more devices that require the licensing of Ericsson’s patents. If both firms can’t reach an agreement on a new licensing pact, Ericsson could end up taking something of a hit to its bottom line. After all, Samsung is the world’s largest shipper of smartphones.

    Samsung says that it is unfair to allow Ericsson to use its patents since the latter does business in the states and Samsung has yet to establish its base station business in the U.S. Ericsson filed a new lawsuit against Samsung on January 1st and Samsung filed a patent infringement suit against Ericsson in response. Ericsson spokeswoman Mikaela Idermark said the company is aware of Samsung’s new complaint and “willfully review what has been filed before deciding on any further comment.

    Ooredoo Qatar, working with technology giant Ericsson, has successfully tested the 200MHz spectrum and achieved a record system throughput of 4.2Gbps, as part of the growing shift towards complete 5G delivery.

    The technology, deployed within Ooredoo’s network, uses advanced 5G and 4G carrier aggregation functionality, increasing the data rate per user by assigning multiple frequency blocks to the same user. This innovation is expected to play an important role in the build-up to achieving 90 percent 5G coverage throughout Qatar by the end of 2020.

    Increasingly, Ooredoo Qatar is positioned as a key digital enabler. With this recent breakthrough in both speed and delivery, customers will be able to maximize the benefits of streaming services, virtual learning environments, cloud gaming and augmented and/or virtual reality applications.     Ericsson comes up with super high-tech anti-smartphone-theft solution

    Over the past few years, manufacturers have made great strides to discourage smartphone theft. These are usually locking mechanisms, which block the phone from ever being used by someone else than its user — either through biometric scanners or the good old passcode. And if a thief tries to reset your device, it will usually become a brick, which will not activate unless your personal password is entered on boot.

    But that hasn’t stopped thieves entirely. For one, they like to try their chances — some users still don’t lock their phones. And two, some phones can still be hacked into after a factory reset. So, additional solutions are always welcome. Swedish company Ericsson (remember the partnership Sony-Ericsson?) has come up with and patented a very high-tech anti-theft system. It’s called “Adaptive Friction” and currently only exists on paper, filed as a patented idea.

    Basically, the phone will use multiple sensors to maintain constant awareness of its contextual environment — whether it’s in a pocket, on a table, in a purse, et cetera. It will do this by analyzing data from its microphones, light sensor(s), camera(s), and gyroscope. Whenever a hand is laid on the device, it will quickly try to determine whether or not it’s being grabbed by its owner — it will do so by analyzing the grip (whether it’s a secure and confident grab, or a cheeky corner pinch) and even by utilizing biometric sensors to analyze the person’s heartbeat and compare it to known heartbeat patterns of the rightful owner.

    If the phone determines that it’s being nabbed by an unknown person, it will begin vibrating at ultrasonic frequencies, which should — in theory — make it super slippery and hard to pinch out of a pocket. Hence the name “Adaptive Friction” The patent does state that the technology can also be used to make the phone extra grippy and stick to the user’s hand when being used, thus making it harder to drop, which also sounds pretty interesting.

    Of course, this sounds like a whole ton of tech that needs to be tuned in order to make this work quickly and reliably. As with any patent — there’s no guarantee we’d see it in a phone any time soon (if ever), but this one definitely has some interesting “out of the box” thinking.

    Docomo, Ericsson complete 5G glass antenna trial

    Japanese operator NTT Docomo and glass solution provider AGC Group have collaborated with Ericsson to complete what the companies believe to be the world’s first trial of 5G communications using a glass-embedded antenna.

    The trial used an antenna embedded in synthetic fused silica glass to transmit and receive 28-GHz 5G radio signals.

    Validation testing used a vehicle fitted with multiple antennas and traveling about 30 km/h. Using the antenna, the companies achieved downlink speeds averaging 1.3Gbps within a 100 meter range, and maxing out at 3.8Gbps at 400 MHz.

    The glass antenna prototype has the potential to overcome challenges associated with high-band 5G spectrum being unable to adequately penetrate windows, the companies said.

    It could potentially be attached to window surfaces in buildings, vehicles and railway cars to enable stable, high-speed 5G communications under challenging indoor and in-vehicle conditions.

    Unicom, Ericsson to collaborate on 5G development

    China Unicom and Ericsson have signed an agreement to accelerate the development of commercial 5G technology.

    The agreement signed at China Unicom’s 5G Innovation and Cooperation Conference in Shenzhen involves further co-operation on a 5G test network.

    The companies have already completed innovative 5G projects, such as the live 4K HD broadcast of a marathon; live 8K HD broadcast of the Women’s World Club Volleyball Championship; 360 degree panoramic live broadcasting, and driving demos.

    Meanwhile China Telecom and Ericsson announced they are collaborating to provide an end-to-end 5G network for the Beijing Expo 2019 horticultural exhibition in Beijing’s Yanqin district.

    The two companies are providing an end-to-end 5G network for the expo offering a combination of garden art and 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) technology to provide visitors with 360-degree panoramic UHD video VR live broadcasting, 5G+VR live broadcasting, and 5G cloud gaming services.

    Telenor Myanmar has announced it has nearly reached 100% of the nation’s townships with its LTE network, having rolled out over 6,100 LTE sites nationwide.

    The company’s LTE network now covers 307 townships, with the company having expanded to seven more townships during the first quarter.

    “Since the first quarter, the company has deployed 856 additional sites and aims to increase this to more than 1,100 by the end of the month,” according to Telenor Myanmar CTO Jai Prakash.

    “As per our commitment to bring the best possible things for Myanmar citizens, we have achieved our ambitious goal of establishing a network with 6100+ LTE sites in 2019,” he said.

    “We will keep upgrading our network for our customers with our best data network and also educating the population on how to use our service effectively and efficiently.”

    Meanwhile the operator has been working with Ericsson to prepare its network for 5G, having conducted a joint trial last year achieving 1Gbps downlink rates over its LTE network.

    In late November, the companies also commenced a pilot study involving the provision of IoT connectivity in Mandalay City.

    When Apple agreed to use only Qualcomm’s modem chips for the iPhone, it worked out an annual $1 billion “incentive fee” that it would receive from the chip maker. But there was an important condition. If Apple decided to use a second modem chip supplier, it would have to pay Qualcomm back the “incentive fees” it received. Apple then attended a hearing held by the South Korea Fair Trade Commission and spoke out against Qualcomm’s chip licensing practices. As a result, the $1 billion checks stopped. At the same time, Qualcomm learned that Apple was planning on using Qualcomm and Intel modem chips for the iPhone 7.

    In January 2017, Apple sued Qualcomm over the $1 billion checks it was no longer receiving, setting off a chain reaction of lawsuits filed by both sides against each other. But that is all water under the bridge following the settlement that both companies agreed to last week. All lawsuits are dropped, and Apple will pay Qualcomm an undisclosed amount. Apple now has a six-year licensing agreement with Qualcomm and a multi-year pact that will guarantee it modem chips from the San Diego based chip maker. According to one analyst, Apple could be paying Qualcomm as much as $9 per iPhone for the component.

    During the two years before the settlement, Apple publicly derided the quality of Qualcomm’s modem chips while in private it called them “the best.” These complementary comments were made by Apple executives in memos that also praised Qualcomm’s “unique patent share” and “significant (intellectual property) holdings.” The memos were obtained by Qualcomm during the discovery process. That is when both parties in a lawsuit hand over evidence to each other before a trial starts.

    Apple called Qualcomm’s chips worthless in arguments it made to lawmakers, regulators, judges, and juries while privately raving about the company’s components. This has many wondering how deeply Apple believed what it was saying when it tried to get courts to change the methods that Qualcomm uses to sell its chips. Apple’s true feelings about Qualcomm might explain why it might be paying Qualcomm as much as $9 per iPhone for its chips.

    Previously, Apple derided Qualcomm’s royalty deals that force phone manufacturers to pay a percentage of the retail price of each phone sold. In fact, just before the settlement was announced, Apple and Qualcomm were squaring off in a San Diego courtroom with billions of dollars in play. On Tuesday, during his opening statements, Apple’s attorney (Ruffin Cordell from Fish & Richardson) was trying to prove that the iPhone didn’t rely on Qualcomm’s component. He did this by pointing out that an iPhone can function using a Wi-Fi connection. And Apple has wondered in the past why Qualcomm should receive royalties for parts of a phone that it has nothing to do with.

    Apple’s attorney also pointed out Tuesday that licensing deals Apple made with Ericsson and Huawei were for twice the number of patents that Apple licensed from Qualcomm, but for a small percentage of what Apple was paying the chip supplier. However, an internal Apple document later obtained by Qualcomm showed that Apple licensed less expensive patents on purpose in order to create evidence that showed how much more Qualcomm was seeking to license its patents.-

    “While it’s very common for companies who are engaged in legal disputes to play hardball, the disclosure of these documents is very unsettling. It potentially reveals that Apple was engaging in a bad faith argument both in front of antitrust enforcers as well as the legal courts about the actual value and nature of Qualcomm’s patented innovation.”-Adam Mossoff, law professor at George Mason University, director of the Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property

    Documents received by Qualcomm during discovery revealed that Apple had planned on suing Qualcomm as far back as 2014; the tech giant decided to wait so it could continue to collect the billion-dollar payments from the chip maker. One document, produced by Apple six months before it lobbed the first salvo in their court battles, revealed Apple’s game plan to reduce the amount of the royalties it was paying to Qualcomm. Apple would “hurt Qualcomm financially,” and “put Qualcomm’s licensing model at risk.”

    Qualcomm’s licensing model is at risk, but not necessarily because of Apple. Earlier this year the Federal Trade Commission and Qualcomm squared off in a non-jury trial held before Judge Lucy Koh. Apple did have some executives testify against Qualcomm’s licensing practices, but other phone manufacturers did so as well. If Judge Koh, who presided over the Apple v. Samsung patent trial, rules in favor of the FTC, Qualcomm might have to change the way it sells its chips.

    Last Friday, Chinese investigators raided Ericsson’s offices in Beijing after receiving complaints about the licensing fees that Ericsson charges phone makers.

    Amid the background of increased global tension over Chinese vendors’ 5G technology being banned by the US and other countries, officials from China’s State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) are looking into Ericsson’s patent licensing practices after receiving complaints.

    In an email to FierceTelecom, an Ericsson spokesman confirmed that the company was under investigation by SAMR.

    “Ericsson can confirm that the Chinese SAMR has formally initiated an investigation due to complaints against Ericsson’s IPR licensing practices in China. Ericsson is fully cooperating with the investigation and will refrain from further comments while it is ongoing.

    “At Ericsson, we license our industry leading patent portfolio on FRAND (Fair, Reasonable and Non-Discriminatory) terms and conditions and have always been committed to these FRAND principles.”

    Last month Ericsson claimed to have 49,000 patents, while Huawei counted 87,805 in its 2018 annual report.

    The Wall Street Journal said that roughly 20 SAMR officers raided Ericsson’s Beijing offices on Friday. Earlier this year, Chinese mobile phone makers complained about Ericsson’s licensing practices. Chinese media reports implied that licensing fees paid to Ericsson would increase with the rollout of 5G technologies and services.

    China’s People’s Posts and Telecommunications News said in an online report that Chinese smartphone vendors were concerned that Ericsson would impose 5G patent fees on top of the current fees for 3G and 4G technologies.

    China-based Huawei is battling Apple as the world’s second-largest smartphone maker behind Samsung.

    Last month, Huawei filed a lawsuit against the US government challenging a recently passed law that bans federal agencies from buying Huawei products.

    Huawei was the top vendor globally in the wireless packet core (WPC) market last year while rivals Ericsson and Nokia rounded out the top-three spots. A February report by Dell’Oro said that Huawei was the largest global equipment service provider last year with more than a 30% market share.
