  • Revolutionizing Retail: How WhatsApp and Conversational AI are Transforming Your Shopping Experience

Revolutionizing Retail: How WhatsApp and Conversational AI are Transforming Your Shopping Experience

The shift towards Conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the retail landscape, with AI-powered customer experiences emerging as the new standard, particularly within the realm of daily use messaging apps. This trend signals a departure from the previously flashy, novelty bots to a more meaningful, user-centered approach.

    Transition from Broadcasting to Dialogue

For the past ten years, retailers have primarily focused on optimizing websites, apps, and mass emails – platforms that were primarily designed for broadcasting messages rather than fostering interactions. Burton Chau, CEO and Co-founder of Sanuker, contends that such platforms are now out of sync with how individuals typically utilize their smartphones. While websites, apps, and email blasts continue to play an essential role, they tend to be more transactional. Messaging platforms, which consumers frequently use daily, present an opportunity for high user interaction, high intent, and measurable customer journeys, particularly when supplemented with AI, automation, and data.

This shift marks a significant realignment of the tech stack. Retailers are increasingly focusing on meeting consumers within their preferred platforms, such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, and threading marketing, service, and commerce into a single chat thread. AI agents are employed within these threads to manage discovery, frequently asked questions (FAQs), lead qualification, and first-line service, with human staff handling more complex tasks.

WhatsApp as the New Retail Hub

Sanuker operates across various messaging platforms, but WhatsApp has emerged as the anchor for conversational retail in markets like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, India, and Indonesia. Chau attributes this to the app’s ubiquity and the quality controls established by Meta. A key selling point is that WhatsApp supports the entire retail journey, from pre-sales inquiries to recommendations, purchasing, post-sales follow-ups, and customer support.

Using Sanuker’s technology, retailers can integrate the conversation with e-commerce platforms, Customer Relationship Management (CRM), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, providing real-time updates on inventory, pricing, and order status. As a result, the customer experience becomes less like a campaign and more like a continuous relationship.

    Personalization with a Contextual Memory

While many retailers claim to offer personalization, Chau identifies a clear distinction between basic tweaks and what he terms “CRM-connected personalization.” He asserts that an AI agent achieves true personalization when it uses real-time customer data to provide accurate responses and promote outcomes. This includes access to purchase history, interests, and behaviors. The ability to update the backend with new events when orders or inquiries are made within the chat creates a closed loop that makes conversational AI economically attractive.

Automation: The Future of the First-line Concierge

Sanuker foresees a future where AI agents serve as the first-line digital concierge on messaging platforms. Chau believes that AI agents could replace human agents in customer service roles by 2026, not by eliminating human roles, but by taking on repetitive questions and escalating only when necessary.

Achieving this requires a seamless integration of technologies. Sanuker’s platform, alongside tools like N8N and Dify, enable retailers to quickly and efficiently connect messaging with e-commerce, CRM, and ERP systems, and integrate AI models from OpenAI, Azure, Gemini, or DeepSeek.

    Guardrails, Not Gimmicks

Despite the promise of conversational AI, it also brings potential risks, including spammy bots that undermine trust and invite regulatory scrutiny. Chau emphasizes the need for robust governance and compliance measures, and highlights the importance of designing explicit handover routes to human agents to ensure that customers never feel trapped in an automated loop.

In his vision, the most successful retailers in 2026 will not be those that replace staff with bots, but those that utilize conversational AI to enhance human interactions, making them rarer, richer, and more consequential.

    Questions & Answers

What is the role of messaging platforms in the shift towards conversational AI?
Messaging platforms, such as WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, are pivotal to the shift towards conversational AI as they provide the daily-use platform that allows for high user interaction, high intent, and measurable customer journeys.

How does Sanuker’s technology enhance the customer experience on WhatsApp?
Sanuker’s technology integrates WhatsApp conversations with e-commerce platforms, CRM, and ERP systems, providing real-time updates on inventory, pricing, and order status. This makes the customer experience more personalized and relationship-based.

How does Sanuker envision the future of conversational AI in retail?
Sanuker envisages a future where AI agents serve as the first-line digital concierge on messaging platforms. These AI agents would handle repetitive questions, escalating only when necessary, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the customer service process.

  • Experience Effortless Chatting: Google Messages Launches Dynamic One-Hand Context Menu

Experience Effortless Chatting: Google Messages Launches Dynamic One-Hand Context Menu

In the latter part of last month, Google announced its intent to replace the Hamburger icon menu with a dynamic context menu. The aim was to streamline navigation for Google Messages users, particularly those with larger-screen phones. When the Google Messages app receives the dynamic context menu, users will no longer have to perform the finger gymnastics previously required to access the hamburger menu in the top-right corner.

Rollout of the New Google Messages Menu

The new menu format is now being deployed to the beta versions of the Google Messages app. Following the update, long pressing on a chat/message will activate the Reactions menu which appears at the top of the message. This allows users to quickly add a reaction. Below the message, however, is a vertical box presenting various options, some of which were previously only accessible by stretching to tap the hamburger icon in the far top-right corner of the screen.

This new menu provides options such as:

    – Reply
    – Forward
    – Copy
    – Star
    – Delete
    – Select more
    – Info

This simplification of Google Messages is certainly sufficient to make usage more convenient; there’s no need to strain your hand to reach certain features. To keep the vertical box as compact as possible, the app comprehends the context of the long-pressed message, and presents different options based on that context.

    Deleting Multiple Messages

There have been some misconceptions about the new interface, with one user on Reddit believing that the redesign had removed the ability to delete multiple messages at once. In fact, this is not the case. To delete several messages, users simply need to long-press on the first message they wish to remove and then select ‘Select more’ from the vertical box. They can then scroll down to the next message they wish to delete and tap on it.

A counter will be visible in the upper left-hand corner of the screen, indicating the number of messages selected for deletion. Once all desired messages have been selected, users just need to tap the trash can icon in the top right corner to remove them.

    Accessing the New Features

I have personally been able to access this feature on my Pixel 6 Pro running the most recent Android 16 QPR3 Beta. However, it’s important to note that access to these features requires membership in the Google Messages Beta program. To confirm membership, users can open the Google Play Store app and search for the Google Messages listing. Those who are part of the beta program will see the word (Beta) in parentheses.

Becoming a beta tester allows users to experience new features before the public and provide feedback to developers. However, availability is limited and those interested may not always see the “Join the beta” prompt. If it’s not visible, it’s recommended to check back later.

    Questions & Answers

How can I access the new Google Messages menu?
You can access the new menu by long pressing on a chat/message. This will activate the Reactions menu and the new dynamic context menu at the bottom of the message.

Is the ability to delete multiple messages at once still available in the new menu?
Yes, the ability to delete multiple messages hasn’t been removed. It’s simply accessed in a different manner. You need to long-press on the first message you want to delete, then select ‘Select more’ from the vertical options box. Then you can scroll to and select the other messages you wish to delete.

How can I become a Google Messages beta tester?
To join the Google Messages beta program, open the Google Play Store app and search for the Google Messages listing. If there is availability, you will see an option to “Join the beta”. It may take a few minutes to 24 hours to process the request. If you don’t see this option, there may not be any openings at the moment, so try again later.

  • Western Australia’s New Liquor Law Reforms: A Toast to Hospitality Growth and Enhanced Tourism Experience

Western Australia’s New Liquor Law Reforms: A Toast to Hospitality Growth and Enhanced Tourism Experience

The recently approved revisions to liquor laws in Western Australia are set to streamline processes, reduce bureaucratic hindrances, and inject vitality into the region’s liquor, tourism, and hospitality sectors.

Enhancements to Alcohol Service and Trading Hours

The legislation overhaul permits licensed establishments such as hotels, taverns, small bars, and alcohol manufacturers to offer alcoholic beverages with or without an accompanying meal on notable public holidays such as Good Friday and Christmas Day. Furthermore, the trading hours on these holidays, as well as on Anzac Day, will see an extension of up to four hours, permitting operation from 10 am to midnight.

    Introduction of Digital ID Checks

In alignment with modern technological trends, the Liquor Control Act 1988 will also integrate digital ID checks into its enforcement mechanism. However, the law stipulates that digital evidence such as photographs or screenshots of IDs will not be deemed acceptable.

    Reducing Paperwork and Boosting Growth

As part of the drive to slash red tape, the new laws will eliminate the need to renew extended trading permits, thus reducing paperwork and related costs for business operators. Small bars stand to benefit from these changes, as the legislation raises their patron capacity limit from 120 to 150.

Expanding Product Range and Strengthening Penalties

The reforms also broaden the scope for spirit producers, enabling them to produce a wider array of products, including ready-to-consume beverages like hard seltzers. To address potential alcohol-related issues, the Banned Drinkers Register (BDR) will become a permanent measure in Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields, Carnarvon, and Gascoyne Junction. The law will also amplify penalties for unauthorized alcohol sales and distribution.

According to Racing and Gaming Minister Paul Papalia, these reforms echo the government’s dedication to facilitating business operations in Western Australia. He underscored the legislation’s dual benefit for businesses and customers, stating, “We’re backing growth in tourism, hospitality and the night-time economy with a modern liquor licensing system that works for both businesses and patrons.”

    Questions & Answers

What are the key changes in Western Australia’s new liquor law reforms?
The primary changes include extended trading hours on public holidays, introduction of digital ID checks, eradication of extended trading permit renewals, increase in customer capacity at small bars, and expansion of the product range for spirit producers.

How will the reforms affect small bars?
The reforms will ease administrative burdens for small bars by dispensing with the need for extended trading permit renewals. They will also allow for an increase in customer capacity from 120 to 150.

What measures will be taken to address potential alcohol-related issues?
The reforms will make the Banned Drinkers Register (BDR) a permanent feature in certain areas, and also strengthen penalties for illegal alcohol sales and distribution.

The most common professional roles were in business and administration (16%), and science and engineering (13.7%). For managers, administrative and commercial roles (11.4%) and production and specialized services roles (9.4%) were the most frequent.

    Demographics and Income

Overseas work experience was most common among mid-career workers, with 4.6% of individuals in their 40s and 4.5% of those in their 50s having had an overseas posting. However, many of these workers had completed their overseas stints earlier in their careers, primarily between the ages of 25 to 34.

The report also revealed that international experience was less common among older and younger employees. Only 2.6% of employees in their 60s, 2.5% of those in their 30s and 0.5% of workers aged 25-29 had worked overseas.

The study found that those in senior roles or with higher incomes were more likely to have had international work experience. Among managers and executives, 7.7% had experience working abroad. Moreover, 16.8% of full-time residents currently earning at least S$30,000 (US$23,100) a month had previously worked overseas. This figure was at 10.6% for those earning S$15,000-19,999 monthly and about 3% for employees in the S$5,000-9,999 range.

The statistics emphasize the importance of international experience in fostering leadership skills and cross-cultural capabilities, particularly for those aspiring to higher-paying roles. Active planning and seeking overseas work opportunities is crucial to building necessary capabilities for these roles in the future.

  • China’s Economic Troubles Deepen: Factory Output, Retail Sales Experience Record Lows

China’s Economic Troubles Deepen: Factory Output, Retail Sales Experience Record Lows

In October, China’s factory output and retail sales experienced their slowest growth in over a year, which is placing increasing pressure on policy makers to overhaul the $19 trillion export-driven economy. This comes as the country faces growing supply and demand challenges that threaten to further hamper growth.

    China’s Economy Dilemma

For several decades, the officials responsible for maintaining China’s bustling economy, the world’s second largest, have had the option to stimulate its extensive industrial sector to increase exports if domestic consumer spending slackens. Alternatively, they could dip into public funds to finance infrastructure projects to boost the country’s GDP.

However, the ongoing tariff war initiated by former U.S President Donald Trump has underscored China’s dependence on the world’s largest consumer market. It emphasizes that even an economy as large as China’s can only derive limited growth from developing more industrial parks, power substations, and dams.

Recent economic indicators offer little promise of a swift recovery. The more the economic data deteriorates month by month, the more urgent the need for reform becomes.

Slowing Industrial Output and Retail Sales

According to data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), industrial output in October grew by only 4.9% year-on-year, marking the slowest annual pace since August 2024. This is lower than the 6.5% growth seen in September and falls short of the 5.5% increase forecasted by economists.

Retail sales, an indicator of consumption, rose by a mere 2.9% last month, also marking their slowest pace since August of the previous year. This is a decrease from the 3.0% growth in September, although it surpassed the forecasted growth of 2.8%.

    Challenges and Potential Reforms

Policy makers are acknowledging the need for changes to rectify historical supply-demand imbalances, enhance household consumption and address the massive local government debt. This debt is preventing provinces, many of which have economies as large as those of nations, from becoming self-sufficient.

However, they also understand that structural reform will be painful and politically risky, particularly at a time when trade tensions have increased pressure on the economy.

Another surprise was China’s auto sales, which despite expectations of a surge ahead of the phase-out of various tax breaks and government incentives, ended an eight-month growth streak.

    Economy Undermined by Structural Issues

Fixed asset investment contracted by 1.7% in the first 10 months of the year compared to the same period in the previous year. This decrease was far more significant than the anticipated 0.8% drop.

Furthermore, a prolonged downturn in the country’s vital property sector, a significant repository of household wealth, showed no signs of letting up, with new home prices falling at their most rapid monthly rate in a year.

Despite these challenges, the ruling Communist Party of China has pledged to considerably increase household consumption’s share of GDP, while also emphasizing the need to strengthen its vast industrial base.

    Questions & Answers

What is the status of China’s factory output and retail sales?
In October, China experienced the slowest growth in factory output and retail sales in more than a year, which is placing increased pressure on the economy.

Has China’s dependence on the world’s largest consumer market been highlighted recently?
Yes, the ongoing tariff war initiated by former U.S. President Donald Trump has underscored China’s dependence on the world’s largest consumer market.

What challenges is China’s economy currently facing?
China’s economy is facing numerous challenges, including a slowdown in industrial output and retail sales, a prolonged downturn in the property sector, and the need for structural reform to rectify historical supply-demand imbalances.

  • WhatsApp Unveils Full-Fledged Native App for Apple Watch: Upgrade Your Messaging Experience Now!

WhatsApp Unveils Full-Fledged Native App for Apple Watch: Upgrade Your Messaging Experience Now!

WhatsApp has made a long-awaited move by releasing a specialized, native application designed specifically for the Apple Watch. This significant development includes voice messages and comprehensive chat history, effectively bringing key features to users’ fingertips.

WhatsApp for Apple Watch: A Fresh Look

Previous versions of WhatsApp for the Apple Watch left much to be desired, functioning essentially as a rudimentary notification center. Users would receive alerts and possibly view the first line of a message, but anything more involved required using an iPhone.

The recent update signals a shift in this dynamic. WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta, announced the launch of a completely new, native application built specifically for watchOS. This isn’t merely a slight tweak, but a comprehensive application designed to enhance the usability of the watch application.

Key Features of the New Application

With the new application, users can expect a variety of features including:

    – Reading complete messages, irrespective of length
    – Recording and sending voice messages
    – Identifying incoming calls with call notifications
    – Responding with emojis
    – Viewing better quality images and stickers
    – Accessing an extensive chat history

While these features present exciting prospects, it’s important to note that they require the latest software. Users will need an Apple Watch Series 4 or later model and must run watchOS 10 or a newer version.

For the millions of users, particularly outside the United States, who rely on WhatsApp as their primary mode of communication, this update represents a significant improvement on the Apple Watch’s functionality, which previously felt restricted by its iMessage-centric design.

However, when compared to its competition, WhatsApp has been slow to adapt. For example, Telegram, one of WhatsApp’s main competitors, has long had an efficient native watch application. This allows users to browse chats, send voice messages, and even view stickers. The new WhatsApp application seems less like an innovative move and more like an attempt to catch up with the advanced features provided by its competitors.

Despite these shortcomings, the arrival of the new application enhances the overall functionality of the Apple Watch, especially in terms of enabling quick replies without relying on an iPhone.

    Final Thoughts

For users who regularly communicate overseas where WhatsApp maintains a stronger presence than iMessage, the update is a welcome development. The ability to swiftly send voice messages, a preferred method of communication for many, remedies a significant inconvenience previously experienced on the Apple Watch. This update single-handedly addresses this issue, making the Apple Watch a more comprehensive device.

    Questions & Answers

What are the key features of the new WhatsApp application for the Apple Watch?
The new application allows users to read complete messages, record and send voice messages, identify incoming calls with notifications, respond using emojis, view high-quality images and stickers, and access an extensive chat history.

What is required to access the new WhatsApp application on the Apple Watch?
To use the new WhatsApp application, users must have an Apple Watch Series 4 or later model and must run watchOS 10 or a newer version.

Does the new application make WhatsApp more competitive?
While the new features bring WhatsApp closer to its competitors, the update could be viewed as an effort to catch up with existing features offered by apps like Telegram rather than a groundbreaking innovation.
