Jack Wills bags cash injection to save the business

Creditors of fashion label Jack Wills under HSBC have ordered an assessment of the firm’s finances, according to a report. The news comes just weeks after Jack Wills achieved new investment of £10 million (US$12.8 million), followed by speculation that the company may soon need further financial help – prompting the appointment of advisers from auditing firm EY.

The new investment reportedly comes from an unnamed wealthy Italian family, which has previously invested in Jack Wills’ majority shareholder, BlueGem Capital Partners. BlueGem itself is thought to have provided a similar injection of cash. The identity of the investor is likely to be revealed following reports expected to be filed at Companies House.

Brand co-founder Peter Williams was ejected from the firm’s board last year, with new executives brought in to effect a turnaround.

Jack Wills operates more than 90 stores worldwide, including five stores in Hong Kong and two in Singapore.

Jaspal unveils collection joined by Lynnie Z

Thai fashion brand Jaspal has opened a new flagship store featuring its limited edition collaboration with London-based artist Lynnie Z. The partnership with Jaspal’s Hi Life collection marks the opening of the brand’s new IconSiam flagship. It is one of a series of partnerships between Jaspal and global artists to ensure that unique styles emerge each season.

The Hi Life collection for men and women features stars, hearts, lips and faces as motifs with strong colour themes referencing Africa.

“I was so honoured to be a part of such a wonderful project,” said Z. “Thailand has an outstanding heritage and Thai people love art and fashion, which is the reason why I decided to come on board. Also, I think Jaspal and I share the same artistic soul, and, more importantly, the brand fully understands the story relayed behind my works,” she said.

“To me, this project was really wonderful, allowing me to create a masterpiece collection with a famous local brand, and communicate my inspiration, passion, and uniqueness through the collection. This is one of the best works I’ve ever created. As for the process in making this collection, for the most part, I came up with ideas and colours from my sketchbook. These are organic and abrupt but they reflect a liveliness that I wanted to communicate through the collection.”

  • LVMH invests into Gabriela Hearst

    LVMH invests into Gabriela Hearst

LVMH Luxury Ventures, an investment arm of the multinational conglomerate, has taken a minority stake in New York-based luxury label Gabriela Hearst. The terms of the deal were not disclosed, although LVMH Luxury Ventures typically invests between €2 and €15 million.

Hearst, who ran contemporary-priced label Candela for more than a decade before launching her upscale luxury offering in 2015, has briskly built a ready-to-wear business based on sharply tailored silhouettes rendered in ultra-expensive fabrics, with a focus on sustainably sourced materials. In 2018, just three years after she launched her label, the collection — which also includes a robust handbag business, mostly sold direct-to-consumer — generated between $15 and $20 million, according to sources familiar with the business.

Launched in 2017, LVMH Luxury Ventures is an investment vehicle within the LVMH group that aims to invest in emerging labels that have already shown an ability to scale.

Investments have included French apothecary brand Officine Universelle Buly and sneaker resale shop Stadium Goods, which was subsequently acquired by Farfetch for $250 million in December 2018.

  • Bossini losses set to double

    Bossini losses set to double

Bossini International has warned the group is expected to record a loss attributable to owners of between HK$23 million and $28 million (US$2.93 million to $3.6 million) for the six months to December – roughly double the loss of the same period last year. Chairman Bess Tsin said in a stock exchange filing that the loss was largely due to “unseasonal warm winter weather and weak consumer sentiment in several core markets” where the group operates.

The company said the estimate was based on a preliminary assessment of the company’s accounts for the period and details would be confirmed in late February, when the company announces its annual results.

  • Richemont Group sales soars after YNAP acquisitions

Richemont Group sales soars after YNAP acquisitions

Richemont Group sales soared 24 per cent in December quarter, to €3.915 billion. It was largely down to the inclusion of online acquisitions Yoox-Net-A-Porter (YNAP) and Watchfinder, which were consolidated into the group’s accounts on May 1 and June 1, respectively. But even excluding that, the sales growth was still strong at 5 per cent by constant exchange rates.

By region, European sales accelerated at twice the rate of Asia, up 35 per cent at constant exchange rates, with Asia Pacific – still the company’s largest single geographic market – up by 17 per cent.

Sales in Europe reached €1.147 billion in the quarter, and in Asia €1.389 billion. Sales in the Americas surged 41 per cent to €801 million and in Japan by 14 per cent to €344 million.

The only market where Richemont failed to perform was the Middle East and Africa, where sales slipped 3 per cent to €234 million.

The company’s largest category, jewellery maisons, recorded 8 per cent growth to €1.985 billion, while Richemont said YNAP posted double-digit growth across all regions and solid performances across all its categories. Watchfinder’s sales expanded “more moderately”.

Excluding the new online business unit, Richemont Group sales grew in all regions, with the exception of the Middle East and Europe. During the latter part of the quarter, sales in Europe were affected by social unrest in France which impacted tourism and led to store closures for six consecutive Saturdays. The disposal of Lancel in June also impacted the year-on-year comparison.

A 10 per cent increase in sales in Asia Pacific reflected double-digit sales growth in Mainland China and good increases in other main markets. Sales growth in Hong Kong slowed, primarily due to the strength of the Hong Kong dollar versus the renminbi that resulted in lower tourist spending.

In Japan, a 7 per cent expansion in sales was fuelled by continued domestic and tourist spending as well as the impact of newly opened directly operated boutiques.

Sales in the Americas rose by 9 per cent, primarily driven by the jewellery maisons.

Of Richemont’s many brands, Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels led the way, increasing sales by 8 per cent, driven by jewellery and watches.

Richemont operates in four business areas: jewellery maisons, being Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels; specialist watchmakers, being A. Lange & Sohne, Baume & Mercier, IWC Schaffhausen, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Officine Panerai, Piaget, Roger Dubuis and Vacheron Constantin; online distributors, being YNAP and Watchfinder; and other businesses, including Alfred Dunhill, Azzedine Alaïa, Chloe, Montblanc and Peter Millar.

  • John Jacobs India aims to bag Rs 500 cr revenue by March 2021

John Jacobs India aims to bag Rs 500 cr revenue by March 2021

Lenskart’s eyewear brand John Jacobs is looking to garner Rs 500 crore in revenue in two years as it strengthens its retail presence and expands the product portfolio. The brand, which has eight stores currently in Delhi, Pune and Bengaluru, will add six more in the next two months and aims to set up about 50 stores by March 2021. “John Jacobs has been witnessing strong growth, we expect to close this fiscal with a topline of Rs 180 crore. By March 2021, we expect our revenues to touch Rs 500 crore,” Manan Duggal, Business Head, John Jacobs said.

According to a report, about 40 percent of the sales is driven by online channels, with the rest coming from offline stores.

Last year, Lenskart had said it will invest US$ 4 million in John Jacobs to fuel the brand’s expansion plans.

“We are aggressively growing our presence both in online and offline. The brand is already retailing through Lenksart outlets (over 450 in more than 100 cities). The aim is to take the number of our own stores from 8 now to 50, by March 2021, covering all major metro cities,” he said, adding that the store expansion will entail investment of about Rs 10-15 crore.

John Jacobs is also in discussions with fashion retail chains for distribution of its products.

“In terms of online reach, we are already there on Lenskart and Amazon.in and will soon be available on Flipkart as well,” Duggal said, adding that the brand is aggressively expanding its product portfolio as well.

John Jacobs recently introduced a new eyewear delivery model where the brand delivers eyeglasses, fitted with powered lenses, in a 20-minute timeframe.

The service, currently available in select stores in Bengaluru, will be expanded to Delhi and Pune as well, Duggal said.

He further said that with the new service, the brand expects to “see 30-40 percent upside in orders”.

  • Chow Tai Fook sales slip amid consumer uncertainty

Chow Tai Fook sales slip amid consumer uncertainty

Chow Tai Fook sales declined by 11 per cent in same-store sales volume in both Mainland China and Hong Kong & Macau in the December quarter. However the decline in value was less, at 7 per cent in Mainland China and 6 per cent in Macau. Retail sales on the mainland rose by 1 per cent, which seems a modest rate given the company opened 259 new points of sale there during the quarter. Total retail sales value in Hong Kong fell by 1 per cent, despite five new stores opening there.

In a stock exchange filing, the company said the decline in same-store sales came “amid an uncertain macro environment”.

In Mainland China, same-store sales of gem-set jewellery declined by 5 per cent, while the average selling price (ASP) fell from HK$6900 in the preceding quarter to $6600.

In Hong Kong and Macau, gem-set jewellery sales fell by 8 per cent and the ASP from $11,800 to $11,500.

Sales of gold products in both markets was affected by a decline in volume growth as the gold price strengthened, the company reported. That drove the ASP from $7000 to $7400 in Hong Kong and Macau and from $3900 to $4300 in Mainland China.
