Garuda Indonesia launches re-operations of Singapore-Medan flight

Indonesia’s national airline, Garuda Indonesia, today launched the re-operation of a daily flight between Singapore and Medan. The flight reopening is in line with the airline’s future expansion plan, and the continuously commitment as the flag-carrier to help boost Indonesia’s economic, business, and tourism growth, as well as part of its effort to further strengthen the backbone of its connectivity in Southeast Asia region in line with the Open Sky policy.

The relaunches ceremony was located at the Changi International Airport, and proudly unveiled by Indonesian Minister of Tourism Mr Arief Yahya, President & CEO Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo, Indonesian Ambassador for Singapore H.E. Ngurah Swanjaya, VP Airline Development Changi Airport Group Damon Wong, along with other officials of Garuda Indonesia Board of Director and Tourism Ministry of Indonesia.

President & CEO Garuda Indonesia M. Arif Wibowo stated that aside from the airline’s expansion program, the reoperation of the flight is also a commitment to support Indonesian government program in boosting the Top 10 Priority Destinations in which one of them is Lake Toba.

“We believe this new service will stimulate growth of business and trade in the region, more so as Medan is strategically located as the gateway to Sumatera and the rest of Indonesia’s western regions. The new service will offer passengers a wider choice of destinations as well as greater flexibility and convenience when travelling between Singapore and cities in Sumatera, such as Palembang, Banda Aceh, Sabang, Lheuksmawe, Gunung Sitoli, and Pinangsori,” he added.

Apart from business and leisure travel, many visitors from Singapore come to Medan as the city is quite well known for its vibrant mix of cultures and reputation as a culinary paradise as well as popular tourism attractions.

Commenting on the airline’s strategic initiative, Indonesian Minister of Tourism Arief Yahya explained that Singapore is considered as an international transportation hub, as well as the tourism hub for Indonesia. Furthermore, the Minister also promotes Lake Toba, one of the Top 10 Priority Destinations in Indonesia.

“Toba is the largest and deepest volcanic lake in the world. Lake Toba is a giant caldera, with crater formed by the eruption of a super volcano 74,000 years ago. Experts believe that huge explosion of Toba volcano was the largest in the last 2 million years, and had triggered a dramatic volcanic storm. As an attraction, Lake Toba is a very distinctive, world-class natural landscape,” he added.

The Medan-bound service will run daily and will be operated by Garuda’s Boeing 738 aircraft with a two-class cabin configuration featuring its globally praised Business Class service concept and the World’s Best Economy Class (Skytrax Global Airline Awards 2013).

The service will depart from Changi Airport at 11.15am and arrive at Kualanamu International Airport at 11.45am local time. The return flights to Singapore will depart Kualanamu International Airport at 13.30pm and arrive at Changi Airport at 16.00pm local time.

Garuda Indonesia had also launched the Wonderful Indonesia Travel Pass last January in an effort to promote Indonesia’s tourist destinations beyond its main hub, as well as to boost travel, by making travelling within Indonesia a truly affordable and seamless experience.

The launch of this service is part of Garuda Indonesia’s 50th Anniversary in Singapore. The airline’s presence in Singapore, for over 50 years, marks Singapore not only as one of the airline’s most important markets, but also as a symbol of an even better relationship between the two countries in the next fifty years. Ever since the first day of its consecutive operations in Singapore 50 years ago, the airline has grown considerably and transformed into one of Asia’s most successful airlines.

Garuda Indonesia Increases Flight Frequency in Banyuwangi

Garuda Indonesia airlines will increase the flight frequency at Blimbingsari Airport, Banyuwangi to twice a day from May 16, 2016. The decision was made after the issuance of the permit to increase Garuda Indonesia flight services of Surabaya-Banyuwangi route and vice versa by Directorate General for Air Transport of the Transportation Ministry.

“We gladly welcome the additional flight schedule of Garuda morning [flight], making it two flights a day. It’s a solution to the high volume of airline passengers that often leads to complaints about the lack of seats, either to Banyuwangi or vice versa. I hope it could trigger a surge in tourist arrival,” said Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar Anas on Wednesday, May 4, 2016.

In addition to new schedule of Surabaya-Banyuwangi route, Garuda Indonesia also plans to re-open Denpasar-Banyuwangi service. “I heard that the planned Denpasar-Banyuwangi service is ready, but we are still waiting for further confirmation about it,” Anas said.

  • Hong Kong Airlines passengers flown by Garuda Indonesia

Hong Kong Airlines passengers flown by Garuda Indonesia

Some 95 passengers of Hong Kong Airlines flight HX-6704 which encountered severe turbulence have been flown to Hong Kong from Denpasar by a Garuda Indonesia plane later on Saturday.

“At least 95 passengers of the Hong Kong Airlines plane who survived the turbulence incident have been flown to Hong Kong at 9.35 am Central Indonesia Standard Time (Wita), but the rest have still been given the facility to stay at a hotel to wait for the next scheduled departure,”Ngurah Rai Airport management company PT Angkasa Pura I spokesperson Sherly Yuanita remarked Saturday.

The severe turbulence on the Hong Kong Airlines flight to Hong Kong over the sky of Kalimantan Island left 17 passengers injured early Saturday morning.

The ill-fated Hong Kong Airlines plane with 204 passengers and 12 crew members on board took off from Ngurah Rai airport at 1.05 am Wita and was expected to arrive in Hong Kong at 7.05 am local time but the severe turbulence forced it to “return to base.”

Trikora Harjo, the general manager of PT Angkasa Pura-I remarked that the pilot, Tinios Peter decided to return to Denpasar and landed safely at the airport at 4.28 am Wita.

“The 12 injured passengers were sent to a hospital in Denpasar soon after the plane landed safely at the Ngurah Rai airport,” he said.

Turbulence, the most common cause of injury to air passengers, is what nervous fliers fear the most when they board an aircraft.

Pilots will always keep their seat-belts fastened while seated on an aircraft and will usually advise the passengers to do the same.

Many different things may cause turbulence, but each and every one of them is known and understood by pilots.

Turbulence is uncomfortable but not dangerous. It is part of flying, and is not to be feared as different aspects of the weather cause different types of turbulence.

“In Q1 2016, we actually saw a decrease of 14 percent compared to the same period last year. One of the factor that affected the decrease was unstable global economy, which has made people and companies or agencies to be more efficient,” Micky said, Monday, April 18, 2016.

Moreover, Micky went on, another factor which has affected the growth figure was fuel price decrease which has forced his company to readjust ticket prices.

“Fuel price decrease has resulted in lower ticket prices and it has reduced our revenue compared to previous figure,” Micky said.

Garuda continues to launch various promotional efforts to attract foreigners to travel to Bali in line with the company’s support for the government program of 20 foreign tourist visits by 2019.

“We continue to carry out various efforts to support the government programs also by opening new routes recently and increasing the number of seats for Denpasar-Hong Kong route. The route was previously using 737-800 aircraft with a capacity of 162 seats; we replaced it with A333 aircraft with 251 seats and adding 89 seats,” he explained.

Fund expands Indonesia exposure, buys into retail

Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC has increased its exposure to Indonesia’s growing middle class by investing 5.2 trillion rupiah ($385 million) in Trans Retail, the main retail arm of conglomerate CT Corp.

CT Corp’s businesses span television and online media to retail, banking and amusement parks. Its retail arm Trans Retail, formerly a local unit of French retail group Carrefour, currently runs 86 hypermarkets and supermarkets in the country under the Carrefour and TRANSmart brands.

GIC said in a press release on Wednesday that Trans Retail is taking advantage of the rapidly expanding consumer class as Indonesia’s retail scene shifts from traditional mom-and-pop stores to modern trade formats.

“We are keen to build lasting partnerships with reputable local partners,” said Amit Kunal, GIC’s head of direct investments group for Southeast Asia.

CT Corp’s owner Chairul Tanjung, Indonesia’s fifth richest businessman in 2015 according to U.S. magazine Forbes, is a rare breed of non-ethnic Chinese tycoons in the country who built his business from scratch. CT Corp gained full ownership of Trans Retail after it increased its stake to 100% in 2013 for 525 million euros ($578 million). The group also has a stake in Garuda Indonesia, the country’s flag carrier.

GIC has been boosting investments in consumer sectors overseas, especially in emerging markets where the middle class population is growing. Its investments include retail, e-commerce, education and medical sectors.

In 2014, the sovereign wealth fund participated in a round of investment for Indian e-commerce company Flipkart, which raised a total of $1 billion, and invested $104 million in Taiwanese music-streaming company KKBOX. The fund has also actively invested in various shopping malls overseas, including in the U.S., South Korea and Brazil.

Nonetheless, uncertainties remain in the outlook for Indonesia’s retail scene. Trans Retail does not disclose its financial performance, but the earnings of Indonesian retailers have been under pressure amid a slowdown in consumer spending.

Matahari Putra Prima, a listed hypermarket operator affiliated with the Lippo Group conglomerate, reported a 30% year-on-year decline in net profit for the nine months ended in September 2015. On Wednesday, supermarket operator Hero Supermarket said it would sell off its convenience store business.

This year’s award was presented to the President & CEO of Garuda Indonesia, M. Arif Wibowo, by Edward Plaisted, CEO of Skytrax, at the Changi Exhibition Center during Singapore Airshow 2016.

Indonesian Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Rini Soemarno, Indonesian Ambassador for Singapore I Gusti Ngurah Swajayam, and President Commissioner of Garuda Indonesia Jusman Syafii Djamal were present during the ceremony. Minister Rini Soemarno expressed her highest regards “for all Garuda management and staff, their hard work, and their success in maintaining the quality and standards that exemplify a “5-Star Airline”.”
“We believe that recognition of Garuda Indonesia as a “5-Star Airline” for consecutive years will not only help to strengthen Garuda Indonesia as a global brand, but also support our efforts at “Nation Branding”, as laid out in the Indonesian government’s strategic program,” Rini added.

As the national flag carrier, Rini said, Garuda Indonesia was succesfully representing the Republik of Indonesia with this achievement. “But success also brings a larger challenge for Garuda Indonesia, to continuously improve the quality of their service, and deliver this service to all customers on the ground and in the air.”

The Minister finished by suggesting that the global achievement would be followed by better financial results, and extended her appreciation for Garuda Indonesia’s turnaround financial results which ended in net profit for 2015.
    M. Arif Wibowo, President & CEO, Garuda Indonesia, expressed that “The 5-Star rating reflects the hard work and deep commitment from both management and staff at Garuda who continuously deliver their best efforts to maintain and improve the company’s performance in all business aspects.

“This achievement will be an important milestone for Garuda Indonesia in 2016, as well as being a challenge for everybody in Garuda Indonesia Group to constantly improve performance and deliver service excellence to all customers,” Arif said.
The “5-Star Airline” certification was awarded following the ongoing Skytrax Audit, with comprehensive points covering all service aspects; pre-flight, in-flight and post-flight, including ground handling services, lounge, seat and cabin comfort, inflight meals and inflight entertainment.

Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted said that the “5-Star Airline” rating awarded to Garuda Indonesia for two years consecutively was a result keeping consistently high service standards.
“In the globally competitive airline industry, Garuda Indonesia proved that they can survive and even perform to the highest values and service standards. The consistency of product and service quality is the most important part in a 5-Star certification audit, and we proudly announce that Garuda’s aircraft are offering the variety of classes that is a requirement of a 5-Star Airline,” Edward added.

Spurred on by a strong commitment from the airline’s management and staff to deliver best service, Garuda Indonesia’s performance continues to earn global recognition. By the end of 2016, Garuda Indonesia Group will operate a total of 188 aircraft; 144 aircraft for Garuda Indonesia and 44 aircraft for Citilink.
To continue the positive growth achieved during its “Quick Wins” program in 2015, Garuda Indonesia will enter a “Sky Beyond” program for 2016 aiming at rapid company expansion, focusing on three ‘core strategies’ – company group synergy, effectiveness and efficiency, and service enhancement – to accelerate company achievement and performance.

As part of its company synergy, the Garuda Indonesia Group joined Singapore Airshow, Asia’s largest aerospace and defence event. This was Garuda Indonesia’s first participation as a Group, as only a subsidiary, the Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia, had participated in the past.

The presence of Garuda Indonesia Group at the Singapore Airshow follows Group strategy to develop brand image, to elaborate potential business, to enhance business relations with stakeholders, and to boost up the awareness to Garuda Indonesia Group’s strategic role as Indonesia’s trade envoy in international level.
At Singapore Airshow 2016, the Garuda Indonesia Group, through Garuda Maintenance Facility AeroAsia, looks to several short- and long-term business contracts, with a value of nearly USD 100 milion.
