    Garuda Indonesia Increases Flight Frequency of Routes to Australia

    National airliner Garuda Indonesia (GIAA.JK) will increase its flight frequency to destinations in Australia during the holiday period from May to October, 2017.

    The company targets its passenger growth from flights to Australia to reach 650,000 passengers this year.

    “Flight frequency from Jakarta to Australia is increased to five times from four times each week, while the frequency for Bali-Australia route is raised to seven times from six times per week,” said M Arif Wibowo, President Director of Garuda Indonesia on Tuesday (3/7).

    He said the addition of frequency on flights to Australia will be adjusted with market demand during the holiday period. Thus the flight frequency will be different each period.

    The addition of frequency is part of Garuda Indonesia’s effort in meeting demands and rising market growth, and is line with the synergy commitment the company has implemented with Tourism Australia. The cooperation has boosted the number of passengers on Australia flights to more than 644,237 passengers in 2016.

    Garuda Indonesia to Cooperate with Malaysian Golf Community

    National Carrier Garuda Indonesia’s Kuala Lumpur branch will be cooperating with Malaysian golf community to facilitate local golf players who wish to play in Indonesia.

    “We will come up with a package scheme that merges the prices of golf activities and flight tickets, which will then be disseminated by the community,” Garuda Indonesia’s Malaysian General Manager Supriyono said in Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

    He made the statement immediately after a meeting with Steven Leow, Chief Executive Officer of PT Leo Golf Sukses Wisata Group, which is a Leisure Golf Service company in the Garuda Indonesia Malaysia offices, located in the Intermark Mall.

    “The scheme is aimed to fill morning flight slots from Malaysia to Indonesia. They will be able to immediately head to the golf court and play, as it would still be early in the day. The average length of stay is about three days, and they would board the afternoon return flight. It would be an effective scheme for golf players,” he remarked.

    Garuda also offered to be the community’s sponsor partner, should they wish to organize an event or activity, he stated. “There are approximately 500 members in the community, and there could be 10 to 15 golfers who fly to Indonesia per day. Hence the demand is quite high,” he noted.

    As for their destination cities, Supriyono said that would vary. “But if they go to Jakarta, they even have an office in the Gunung Sahari area,” he added.

    He further explained that Malaysian golfers are keen on trying new places when it comes to golf courts in Indonesia. “Hence, we will also be working with the golf liaison to expand the ‘in’ and ‘out’ of the traffic,” he stated.

    Garuda Indonesia has three flights from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta, including those at 8:40 am, 12:50 pm, and 7 pm. Meanwhile, Garuda Indonesia also provides three flights from Jakarta to Kuala Lumpur, including 8:35 am, 2 pm, and 4:50 pm.

    Garuda to Launch Jakarta-Moscow Flight in August 2017

    The Indonesian flag carrier, Garuda Indonesia, will launch its Jakarta-Moscow direct flight route A330-200 aircraft, which is expected to be operational in August this year.

    The inaugural flight plan was established in a memorandum of understanding signed by a representative of the Indonesia Russia Business Council, Mikhail Kuritsyn, and the Director of Garuda Indonesia, Arif Wibowo, in the presence of Russian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mikhail Galuzyn, and Indonesian Ambassador to Russia, Wahid Supriyadi, on Tuesday (Feb 14).

    “We are trying to accelerate the plan to be realized in August. The flight will be available three times a week,” Arif said.

    He added that since the tourist traffic between the two countries continues to increase, the direct flight plan is expected to support Russias efforts to increase tourist arrivals from Indonesia to more than 100 thousand in 2017.

    The number of Russian tourist arrivals in Indonesia in the first half of 2016 increased by 14 percent, while the number of Indonesians visiting Russia was about 14,000 in 2015.

    Arif stated that the launch of the new flight route marks the beginning of a series of international flight network expansion programs by Garuda Indonesia in 2017.

    In addition to Moscow, Garuda Indonesia will also launch a flight from Jakarta to Los Angeles (USA) via Tokyo, Japan, by mid-2017.

    Meanwhile, Galuzyn noted that the direct flight would further boost the economy and tourism sectors of the two countries.

    “The direct flight has become one of our main priorities in the effort to enhance the number of tourists visiting Russia,” he asserted.

    We are optimistic that the new plan will open a positive opportunity not only for the tourism sector but also for the economic, social, and cultural sectors.

    In 2014, Garuda Indonesia officially joined the SkyTeam global airline alliance, in which the Russian airlines Aeroflot is also a member.

    Through the SkyTeam airline alliance network, all passengers can enjoy the Garuda Indonesia flight network services to more than 1,062 destinations around the world in 177 countries with 17,343 daily flights.

    SkyTeam airline network services currently serve more than 655 million passengers every year.

    Garuda Indonesia’s Subsidiary to Launch IPO

    PT Garuda Indonesia is pushing PT Garuda Maintenance Facility (GMF) AeroAsia, one of its subsidiaries, to release some of its shares to the public through the Initial Public Offering (IPO) scheme.
    “As shareholders, we aspire to strengthen the subsidiary’s capital, and one of the efforts is through the IPO,” CEO of Garuda Indonesia Arif Wibowo stated in Jakarta, Monday.

    He further stated that GMF AeroAsia, which operates in the field of integrated aircraft maintenance and repair services, holds huge business potential, as it has a strong capital already. “It is currently one of the biggest Maintenance and Overhaul companies in Asia, especially in South-East Asia,” he noted.

    He estimated that a total 20 percent of the company’s shares will be released to the public, and it is hoped to materialize this year, as it will contribute to the Indonesian economy.

    “We hope that the IPO would take place in 2017 and next year, as it would be the best milestone for our economy,” he remarked. In terms of non-organic aspects, the company can grow even faster if several measures are taken, including undertaking joint ventures or acquiring some repair stations locally or globally.

    “By releasing 20 percent of its shares, GMF AeroAsia will already be able to grow non-organically, while organic growth will depend on the entire advancement of Garuda Indonesia.” He also pointed out that PT Garuda Indonesia will add nine more aircraft this year, which will support not only operational activities but also its other subsidiary company, Citilink.

    “Five Airbus 320 aircraft will be added to further advance Citilik, which is hoped to boost its domination in the domestic market, especially in the middle- to lower-class segment. A Boeing 737 MAX and three ATR aircraft will also be added to the fleet.”

    Travel agents issue official letter to boycott Garuda

    Following up on their recent statement, the Association of Indonesian Tour and Travel Agents (ASITA) officially boycotted through a circulating letter national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia over the decision to reduce commissions for travel agents.

    The letter, signed by ASITA chairman Asnawi Bahar, noted that Garuda Indonesia had not responded to the association.

    “During the period to resolve the problem with Garuda Indonesia, ASITA Indonesia has decided that all ASITA members are prohibited from participating in any activities involving Garuda Indonesia,” the letter stated.

    Previously, Asnawi said that the airline’s commission from ticket sales would be cut from 7 percent to 5 percent for international flights and 5 percent to 3 percent for domestic flights.

    Garuda Indonesia vice president of corporate communications Benny S. Butarbutar also previously confirmed that the airline would reduce commissions for travel agents.

    “We are adjusting the business pattern with our partners, travel agents. The business situation is changing really fast, with online travel being much stronger, but we will also want to keep traditional travel agents,” he said.

    Benny added that the decision might be temporary, as it would depend on the market situation. He declined to comment on the protest.

    ASITA currently has around 6,300 members of tour and travel agencies across Indonesia, including Panorama Tours Indonesia–a core unit of Panorama Group, Indonesia’s largest integrated travel group.

    Garuda Indonesia to Open Lombok-Guangzhou Route

    General Manager of national carrier PT Garuda Indonesia of Mataram branch Mochammad Yansuerio said that in the near future, Garuda Indonesia would open a direct flight serving Lombok–Guang Zhou, China.

    “Lombok and Sumbawa are getting more popular both at the national level and at the international level. This has become our consideration to add frequency of flights in several routes, including by opening up Lombok – Guangzhou route,” Yansuerio said in Mataram on Friday.

    “The flight is twice a week,” he added.

    In addition to opening Lombok-Guangzhou route, Yansuerio Garuda Indonesia would also increase flights serving Lombok, including Lombok-Yogya and Lombok and Makassar from once week into twice a week.

    “As for Lombok-Surabaya route and Lombok-Jakarta route whose occupancy reach 80-85 percent, we plan to increase the frequency of flights,” he added.

  • Garuda Indonesia axes first class on London routes

    Garuda Indonesia axes first class on London routes

    Garuda Indonesia will no longer be offering first class seating to London from June 20 onwards as it looks to switch from a three-class to two-class Boeing B777-300ER.

    The configuration change for flights GA086/87 on the carrier’s Jakarta-Singapore-London Heathrow route will increase the overall number of seats from 314 to 393 at the expense of its first class cabin.

    While airlineroute.net reported the change on Friday, February 3, at the time of writing Garuda is still offering first class seats on the route on its website.

    Garuda currently operates the route three times weekly, with its Tuesday, Saturday and Sunday schedule not expected to change.

    Garuda Indonesia Announces Change in Citilink Director Board

    PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk (GIAA) changes the composition of board of directors of its subsidiary, PT Citilink Indonesia.

    The change in the composition of board of directors was made after Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Citilink Albert Burhan submitted resignation at the end of December 2016.

    Albert resigned following the case of Citilink airline’s pilots who allegedly drunk when he was about to fly Surabaya-Jakarta plane on Wednesday (12/28/2016).

    In a public expose before the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), Thursday (2/2/2017), the company reported that resignation of Citilink’s CEO or President Director Albert Burhan and Operation Director Hadinoto Soedigno was approved by the company.

    The Annual General Meeting of Shareholders (AGM) of PT Citilink Indonesia approved the change in the composition of Citilink’s board of directors by January 30, 2017.

    Additionally, PT Citilink Indonesia’s current Director is Mega Satria.

    The national flag carrier Garuda Indonesia Airlines has continued to focus on renegotiating contracts and implementing Good Corporate Governance (GCG), despite an alleged involvement of the airline’s ex-president Emirsyah Satar in aircraft engine purchase graft case. “It doesn’t interfere because Garuda had been focusing on GCG, contract renegotiation and cost efficiency since the last two years,” President and CEO of PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk Arif Wibowo said here on Tuesday.

    The airline had conducted major renegotiation of contracts, including the contract on airplane procurement from 2004 to 2014, a period during which Satar ran the enterprise, Wibowo added. “If the graft case is proven, it would be a good lesson for the management,” he noted.

    The contract renegotiation has resulted in a major cost efficiency for the company, he pointed out, adding that Garuda has redesigned its fleet plan every 10 years.

    “Now we are focused on how the three cost components, namely leasing cost, insurance cost and maintenance cost could be renegotiated,” Wibowo remarked. Minister of State-owned Enterprises expected Garuda Indonesia to have high integrity and good corporate governance in its operation.

    “These have become our foundations in running the enterprise,” he added. Earlier, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had named Satar as a suspect in the graft case.

    Satar had allegedly received 1.2 million euros and US $180,000, or a total of Rp20 billion, in bribes. He also received goods worth $2 million in Singapore and Indonesia from the UK-based manufacturing giant Rolls Royce for the purchase of 50 Airbus SAS aircraft engines during the period from 2005 to 2014 for PT Garuda Indonesia Tbk.

    President Jokowi announces Garuda Indonesia`s direct flight to Mumbai

    National carrier Garuda Indonesia will operate a direct flight from Jakarta to Mumbai, India, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has announced.

    The announcement was made during a joint press conference by President Jokowi and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House here on Monday.

    “I am pleased to announce that Garuda Indonesia, beginning today, will fly directly to Mumbai from Jakarta,” he said.

    The direct flight connecting the two metropolitan cities will help strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries, and support economic cooperation as well as people-to-people contact, the president said.

    Garudas maiden Jakarta-Mumbai flight on Monday was a Boeing 737-800 NG with a seating capacity of 156, comprising 12 business class seats and 144 economic class seats.

    The direct flight service is aimed at supporting the Indonesian governments objective of attracting more Indian tourists to Indonesia and strengthening the cultural and historical relations between the two nations.

    Around 270 thousand Indian tourists visited Indonesia last year, and 350 thousand this year, President Director of Garuda Indonesia M Arif Wibowo said in a statement.

    “As the number of Indian tourists continues to increase annually, we are sure that Mumbai is a prospective market for us,” Wibowo stated.

    Indian tourists now have better access to fly to Indonesian tourist destinations such as Bali, Yogyakarta, Surabaya (East Java), and Medan (North Sumatra), from Jakarta, he remarked.

    Garuda Indonesias Jakarta-Mumbai flight GA 862 via Bangkok will operate thrice a week. It will depart Jakarta at 5:55 am local time and arrive in Bangkok at 9:25 am local time. It will depart Bangkok at 10:20 am local time and land in Mumbai at 3 pm local time.

    The Mumbai-Jakarta flight GA 861 will also fly three times a week. It will depart from Mumbai at 5:35 pm local time, and arrive in Bangkok at 9:55 pm local time. It will depart Bangkok at 11:35 pm local time and arrive in Jakarta at 3:05 am local time.

    Garuda operates direct flights from Jakarta to various Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Thailand (Bangkok), China (Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai), South Korea (Seoul), Japan (Tokyo, Osaka) and Saudi Arabia (Jidda and Madinah).

    Garuda Indonesia now flies from Surabaya to Medina

    Garuda Indonesia has opened a new route to connect Surabaya in East Java to Medina in Saudi Arabia in a bid to expand its flight network in the Middle East and tap into the potential umroh (minor haj) market.

    Introduced on Tuesday at Surabaya’s Juanda International Airport, the all economy class flight will be available once a week on Tuesday using Airbus A330-300 that can accommodate 360 passengers.

    “Hopefully we can provide ease and comfort to East Javanese residents and others who are traveling on a pilgrimage since this direct flight will help save time and money,” said Garuda Indonesia Cargo Director Sigit Muhartono in a press release.

    The national flag carrier currently operates two direct international routes from Surabaya, to Singapore and Jeddah.

    Following the opening of the Surabaya-Medina route, Garuda Indonesia now operates a total of 34 flights to the Middle East from major cities in Indonesia.

    The nations flag carrier Garuda Indonesia has received a citation of “The Worlds Most Loved Airline” from the Skytrax, the world airline rating agency.

    Garuda Indonesia President M Arif Wibowo said when receiving the citation here on Thursday that the airline topped other airlines with satisfaction rate of 85 percent.

    “Our greatest thanks for our customers and airline workers,” Arif said, attributing the high appreciation for the airline performance to cooperation of a team of thousands hands in creating the strong brand.

    He said he did not expect to receive the citation as he was not aware of the existence of that category.

    He said the citation would bring bout challenge and at the same time give the airline a motivation to create the highest standard of service.

    CEO of SkyTrax Edward Plaisted said the citation was given based on a survey involving respondents from 40 countries.

    Garuda competed with 420 other airlines included in the survey, Plaisted said.

    “Garuda deserves the citation for highest level of services and satisfaction,” he said.

    The airline provides good facility for both main, business and economic classes with five-star standard, he said.

    The airline has succeeded in taking a big leap forward after it was banned from flying to Europe several years earlier for poor service and performance including air accidents.

    It also began to chalk up operating profit only in the past several years after years of being in the red.

    Garuda also operated a budget subsidiary Citilink, which provided low-cost flights to multiple Indonesian destinations and was spun-off in 2012.

    Garuda to fly wide body airplanes to Jayapura

    National carrier Garuda Indonesia will begin operating wide body aircraft such as the Airbus 330 or the Boeing 777 to Jayapura, in the eastern province of Papua, next year.

    The operation of wide body airplanes to Jayapura was part of the airlines efforts to expand its business to the eastern region of the country, President Director of Garuda Indonesia M Arif Wibowo said here on Friday.

    Garuda Indonesia will begin operating the wide body airplanes to Jayapura in January or February next year, Wibowo said.

    The expansion is also aimed at bolstering the tourism sector by luring more international and domestic tourists.

    “We focus on international flights to boost inbound tourism,” Wibowo said, adding that the airline was trying to encourage tourists to visit the countrys eastern regions.

    Wibowo said that the airport at Jayapura was ready to handle wide body airplanes such as the Airbus 330.

    Using a wide body aircraft will increase the passenger load capacity to 222, from 160 at present in a smaller plane.

    Garuda Indonesia Opens Jakarta-Mumbai Route on December 12th

    Flag carrier Garuda Indonesia will open scheduled flights to India starting December 12, 2016. Garuda Indonesia will operate three flights a week from Jakarta to Mumbai via China.

    Garuda Indonesia president director Arif Wibowo said that the flights will make one transit stop in China in first phase of operation.

    “We will see how it goes in two or three months; if the results are good, we will make it direct flights,” he told reporters at a tourism event in Jakarta on Tuesday, December 6, 2016.

    Arif went on to say that India has a huge potential considering its 1.4 billion population. On the other hand, the number of tourists traveling from India to Indonesia is quite significant at 300,000 arrivals per year.

    As such, he is confident that seat occupancy rate of Garuda’s Boeing 737 to operate in that route will reach 70-75%.

    “More so because it will start to operate on the right time, i.e. before year-end holidays,” he added.

    Aside from India, Garuda will also open direct flights from China’s Chengdu province to Bali. Regular flights will commence mid-January 2017.

    Garuda opens Surabaya-Madinah flight route

    Garuda Indonesia opened the Surabaya-Madina flight route on Tuesday as part of its efforts to expand its flight network in the Middle East.

    The national flag carrier will serve the flight route on Tuesdays using an Airbus A330-300 with a seating capacity of 360, all of them economic class, Garuda Cargo Director Sigit Muhartono said in a written statement released on Tuesday.

    “As the flag carrier of the country with the largest Muslim population in the world, Garuda Indonesia will always try to facilitate Muslims wishing to perform religious services in the Holy Land. With the new flight route inaugurated today, we hope the people of East Java and surrounding areas will find it easy and comfortable to travel to the Saudi main cities of Jeddah and Madinah by direct flight,” he added.

    The Surabaya-Madinah flight route will accommodate not only people who want to travel to the Holy Land for umroh (minor hajj) but also businessmen, tourists and migrant Indonesian workers.

    “With the Surabaya-Madina flight route, Garuda Indonesia offers umroh pilgrims an alternative flight route that enables them to opt to depart from Surabaya to Madina and return to Surabaya from Jeddah,” he explained.
