  • Hong Kong International Airport Scores High In Global Ranking For Best Airport Washrooms

Hong Kong International Airport Scores High In Global Ranking For Best Airport Washrooms

Hong Kong’s airport, already considered the fifth cleanest globally, has now been recognized for another unique feat – its excellent public washrooms. The international air transport rating body, Skytrax, awarded Hong Kong International Airport the fifth position in its inaugural World’s Best Airport Washrooms 2025 awards. The other airports outshining HKIA in this category include Bahrain International Airport, Seoul Incheon International Airport, Tokyo Haneda Airport, with Singapore’s Changi Airport clinching the top spot.

    Superior Washroom Facilities at HKIA

The award-winning washrooms at HKIA stand out for their remarkable cleanliness and generous space, both in the waiting areas and individual cubicles. Recognizing that travelers often need to carry their luggage into the washroom, the design incorporates plenty of room for these items.

Furthermore, the washbasins in these restrooms are ultra-modern, all-in-one stations where one can rinse, soap, and dry their hands in one place, eliminating the need to move around wetting the floor. Another fascinating feature is an intelligent noticeboard system at the entrance of each washroom that displays the current occupancy rate and the number of unoccupied stalls. Additionally, each cubicle is fitted with a red and green LED light indicator to show its occupancy status, eliminating the need for guesswork or knocking to check if a stall is available. The men’s bathroom even boasts small screens resembling airplane windows installed above the urinals to keep users entertained.

    Selection Process and Rankings

Skytrax evaluated 235 airports worldwide to compile these rankings. Given that this was the first year of rating airport bathrooms, the awards were based on feedback from Skytrax’s audit office. However, traveler feedback will be factored into the rankings for future awards. Intriguingly, all ten of the recognized airport bathrooms are located in Asia, with Japan, the homeland of smart toilets, having five of its airports in the top 10.

Among the standout facilities, the New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido was particularly noteworthy, mainly due to its unique Japanese onsen bathing facilities inside the airport terminal.

The top ten airport bathrooms in 2025 include:

    1. Singapore Changi Airport
    2. Tokyo Haneda Airport
    3. Seoul Incheon International Airport
    4. Bahrain International Airport
    5. Hong Kong International Airport
    6. Kansai International Airport
    7. New Chitose Airport
    8. Tokyo Narita Airport
    9. Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport
    10. Fukuoka Airport

HKIA reports continuous growth in passenger and cargo volume in May

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) released the air traffic statistics for Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for May 2024. During the month, HKIA handled 4.07 million passengers and 29,855 flight movements, marking year-on-year increases of 30.8% and 34.5%, respectively.

Mainland China’s Labour Day “Golden Week” holidays starting at the end of April had contributed a significant traffic growth among all passenger segments in May. Traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Mainland China, and Japan recorded the most notable boosts during the month.

Cargo throughput saw a year-on-year increase of 19.0% to 416,000 tonnes in May. HKIA has continued to record double-digit year-on-year growth in cargo volume each month this year. Export traffic remains the main driver of the growth, recording a 30.1% increase compared with the same month last year. Among key trading regions, cargo traffic to and from North America, Europe and the Middle East increased most significantly during the month.

For the first five months of this year, the airport handled 21.0 million passengers or 58.9% higher than the low base during the same period in 2023. Flight movements also increased 50.5% year-on-year to 145,140, while cargo volume rose by 18.0% year-on-year to more than 1.9 million tonnes.

On a 12-month rolling basis, passenger volume was 47.3 million, marking an increase of 157.9% comparing with the previous comparable period. Flight movements increased by 76.3% year on year to 324,805, as cargo throughput also grew 13.1% year-on-year to 4.6 million tonnes.

In terms of route development, HK Express Airways inaugurated a new direct flight service linking HKIA and Sanya Phoenix International Airport, Hainan on 10 May. With four pairs of flights each week, the new route provides more choices for travellers visiting Hainan.

Meanwhile, HKIA’s “Marine Ecology and Fisheries Enhancement Strategy” project won the highest Platinum Award in the ACI Green Airports Recognition 2024, in the biggest airport capacity category of over 35 million passengers per annum. Organised by the ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, the award recognises airports with outstanding achievements in biodiversity and nature-based solutions.

Peter Lee, General Manager, Sustainability of AAHK said, “We are honoured to receive this award, which commends our voluntary and continuous efforts to explore and enhance local marine biodiversity and fisheries resources around HKIA and North Lantau waters.  The efforts, namely eco-enhancement of seawall designs, deployment of artificial reefs and shellfish reefs, and fish restocking, were first investigated by experts, with pilot tests following on intended to determine the viability and real-world value of promising enhancements.  With positive biodiversity impacts identified, we are in the process of scaling up these initiatives around HKIA, and importantly, these nature-based efforts will serve as a useful reference for future implementation by others across broader Hong Kong waters.”

  • President Xi Jinping expected to launch the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge

President Xi Jinping expected to launch the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau bridge

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge – the world’s longest sea bridge which has taken nine years to build – is expected to be officially opened by President Xi Jinping next Tuesday. Central government’s liaison office in Hong Kong has announced the event will take place in Zhuhai on October 23 but Xi will apparently not be crossing over to the Hong Kong side to mark the linking of the three cities through the mega project

The 55km bridge marks a new milestone in Beijing’s broader push to create the Greater Bay Area – a technology-led economic hub comprising Hong Kong, Macau and nine Guangdong province cities with aspirations to rival California’s Silicon Valley.

The bridge will put the three cities it links within an hour’s drive of each other and is expected to boost economic development and tourism in Hong Kong, which has invested HK$120 billion (US$15.3 billion) in the project.

The bridge will provide a fast lane to the western part of the Pearl River Delta, Guangdong and Guangxi. A trip between the Kwai Chung Container Port and Zhuhai would be reduced from about 3½ hours to an hour and 15 minutes.

And it would only take around 45 minutes to travel from Hong Kong International Airport to Zhuhai instead of the current four hours.

The presidential trip, the subject of much speculation this year, would be highly symbolic in marking the 40th anniversary of China’s landmark economic reforms and opening-up policy.

The southern economic powerhouse of Guangzhou was the lead runner in the reforms, with Shenzhen chosen as the first special economic zone to test out market-oriented policies.

It was also the destination of Xi’s maiden visit outside Beijing after taking power in late 2012, and was seen as a strong signal of his support for greater market-oriented reforms.
