  • Innisfree closes all Canadian stores

    Innisfree closes all Canadian stores

South Korean ‘naturalism-oriented’ cosmetic brand Innisfree is closing all of its Canadian stores and the company is blaming the COVID-19 pandemic. Innisfree opened its first Canadian store almost two years ago and plans were in place for a cross-Canada expansion.

“Circumstances have changed over the past year and we anticipate that the health and safety risks of COVID-19 will be impacting our ability to deliver the right experience for the remainder of 2021 and beyond,” said Innisfree in a statement on social media. “In that challenging context, we, unfortunately, had to make the difficult decision to close all Innisfree retail stores in Canada.”

Innisfree said its stores at the Yorkdale Shopping Centre and the Scarborough Town Centre in Toronto will both shut forever on May 8. The same statement noted that the CF Toronto Eaton Centre and CF Markville stores had already been shut. Ontario is currently in an extended retail lockdown until at least May 20.

The Yorkdale Innisfree location was the first in Canada when it opened in August of 2019. The CF Toronto Eaton Centre location came soon after as part of the beginning of a cross-Canada expansion that never came to fruition.

In 2020, Innisfree had planned to expand its Canadian operations by adding more stores to the Greater Toronto Area as well as markets including Vancouver. Brokers in CBRE’s Vancouver office had said that they were working with the brand on a multi-location expansion including at the Metropolis at Metrotown, and industry chatter noted that West Edmonton Mall was in line to possibly get a store as well. The mall-based expansion could have seen Innisfree open stores in most of Canada’s leading shopping centers coast-to-coast over the course of several years.

The pandemic took the wind out of the sails for many brands expanding in the Canadian market, and Innisfree is a surprising one to announce its Canadian exit. The beautiful bright Innisfree stores were often busy with customers seeking out the brand’s popular beauty products that quickly became highly coveted as they gained consumer awareness.

Innisfree announced in February that the brand would be available at Sephora stores in Canada as well as online. It hasn’t been confirmed if the announcement was made in anticipation of Innisfree shutting its own standalone stores. The standalone direct-to-consumer brand store model was a trend that picking up speed across the country prior to the pandemic.

Innisfree, which operates hundreds of stores globally, is part of the Seoul-based AmorePacific Corporation, which features 33 health, beauty, and personal brands under its corporate umbrella. AmorePacific launched the Innisfree brand in 2002. The brand had several stores in the United States and had shut all of them by late 2020. The brand is carried at Sephora in the US according to Innisfree’s website.

Innisfree’s slogan is “Clean Island, where clean nature and healthy beauty coexist happily,” and the brand is known to be eco-friendly — something sought by many consumers lately. Particularly targeting women aged in their 20’s and 30’s, Innisfree is said to be South Korea’s first all-natural brand with many of its ingredients being sourced from Jeju Island. Its products include a wide range of products for both women and men including skincare, makeup, hair and body products, fragrances, beauty tools, and sun care.

About 80% of Innisfree’s ingredients are natural and the company says that its products are “plant-to-bottle”. The company also promotes its “green life” with activities such as reforestation efforts, recycling programs, and even an ‘eco-hankie’ to replace disposable paper products. The company donates 1% of its profits to eco-initiatives.

Innisfree is the latest international retailer to pull out of the Canadian market, and the second beauty brand to shut since the start of the pandemic last year. We reported in November of 2020 that L’Oréal-owned NYX Cosmetics was also in the process of shutting its Canadian stores after entering the market in 2015. At the same time, we’re getting word from industry insiders that several new international brands will be entering the Canadian market by opening stores this year, and we’ll be reporting on several of these in the coming days.

Firs Innisfreet Canada store opens in Toronto

Innisfree Canada has chosen Toronto for its first standalone store.

The South Korean natural cosmetics brand’s new store will cover around 2500sqft of Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre according to designs. It will use a direct-to-consumer retail model designed to meet a competitive marketplace.

The “plant-to-bottle” brand, operated by Seoul’s Amorepacific Corporation, partnered with CBRE to enter Canada, with initial targets being major mall space in Toronto and Vancouver. Amorepacific currently owns 33 health, beauty and personal brands.

Innisfree Canada is not alone in targeting the North American nation, with US company Ulta Beauty and French chain Sephora among prominent names in the beauty products industry recently moving in.

Over the past five years, more than 150 international brands have opened stores in Canada, more than 50 in 2017. Last year more than 30 brands brought a direct-to-consumer retail model to Canada.

Amorepacific boosts business expansion in the Philippines

South Korean cosmetics giant Amorepacific is ramping up its Asean expansion, opening the first Innisfree and Laneige Philippines stores. Amorepacific established Amorepacific Philippines in Metro Manila in August and has since opened the first Innisfree store, in Manila’s SM Mall of Asia.

This week the company opened its first Laneige Philippines store, at SM Makati Department Store.

Laneige has also launched on the nation’s largest e-commerce channels in the Philippines including Lazada.

The upmarket Laneige brand will expand through both online and offline channels through next year, Amorepacific said in a statement.

The company says the Philippines offers great growth potential, with its population of more than 107 million. It is particularly targeting the premium beauty market which is growing quickly there, along with the broader popularity of K-beauty.

“By expanding into this promising market, Amorepacific aims to strengthen its presence in the Asean region, which is one of the important strategic business regions for the company,” the statement said.

  • Lazada to tackle counterfeit Korean products more seriously

Lazada to tackle counterfeit Korean products more seriously

Lazada has pledged to remove any counterfeit South Korean goods from its platform in a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Korea Intellectual Property Protection Agency (KOIPA). It is reportedly the first time a Southeast Asian e-commerce company has reached an agreement with the Korean IP regulator and reflects the growing popularity of Korean beauty and fashion products online across Asia.

Korean brands online and considered at risk from counterfeit products include Etude House, Innisfree, Laneige, Mamonde and 3CE.

“The combined followers for [those brands’] Lazada flagship stores are more than 200,000,” Gladys Chun, general counsel and head of government affairs at Lazada Group said.

“Laneige, Mamonde, Innisfree and 3CE were top search terms in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam during the recent Lazada 11.11 Shopping Festival.”

Lazada has undertaken to remove any counterfeit goods from sale on its platform when alerted by brand owners, once it has confirmed authenticity. Sellers caught trying to sell copy goods on its site face blacklisting.

“Such measures to curb illicit trading of goods on Lazada are aimed at boosting the confidence and preserving the trust of shoppers on our platform,” Chun said.

“At Lazada, we respect and collaborate with rights holders in safeguarding their IP through a combination of proactive and reactive measures. It is incumbent on us to create that trusted space for shoppers and brands, giving them the peace-of-mind that we will always be acting in their best interests.”

  • Innisfree lands in the Philippines

    Innisfree lands in the Philippines

Innisfree Corp., budget cosmetics manufacturer under South Korea’s beauty powerhouse Amorepacific Group opened its first store in the Philippines with hopes to expand its presence in the bourgeoning Southeast Asian market. According to the company, the 148-square-meter store opened at SM Mall of Asia, the largest shopping mall in Manila.

The naturalism-oriented brand plans to introduce skin-care products made of natural ingredients from Jeju Island such as green tea and volcanic pine mushroom and their effectiveness to consumers in the Philippines to satisfy beauty demand and experience.

The Philippines is considered a potential market due to the high ratio of young people in their 20s and 30s interested in hallyu, or Korean wave, and Korean beauty.

An unnamed official from Innisfree said that the company will introduce not only its flagship beauty items but also pore- and oil-treatment mask and powder products tailored for humid and hot climate. The official added that the company will also pursue its environmentally-friendly green life campaign in the Southeast Asian country.

Innisfree, meanwhile, manages 655 outlets overseas including the latest store in the Philippines.

The skin-care brand, which opened its first overseas store in China in 2012, has outlets in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, India, Thailand, the United States, and Japan.

Innisfree also plans to open stores at three major shopping malls in Metropolitan Manila next year and launch online channel

  • Amorepacific profits slump

    Amorepacific profits slump

Amorepacific Group announced lower-than-expected results for the third quarter on Monday with operating profits dropping 36 percent year on year. The fall comes as a stark contrast to rival LG Household & Health Care, which saw operating profits in its beauty business soar 30 percent during the same period.

Amorepacific Group’s operating profit between July and September was 84.7 billion won ($74.2 million), down 36 percent compared to the same period last year. Its revenue rose 3.1 percent year on year to 1.46 trillion won. This was lower than the three-month analyst consensus of 1.56 trillion won in quarterly revenue and 166.9 billion won in operating profits, compiled by stock information provider FnGuide.

The company explained in a statement that the main reason for the low profitability was the increase of costs in human resources and marketing expenditure.

“Despite growing competition in the beauty market in and outside the country, Amorepacific continued investments to enforce brand competence and secure future growth engines,” the company said in a statement.

The group’s main affiliate, also called Amorepacific, saw sales increase 6 percent year on year to 1.28 trillion won in the third quarter. Amorepacific’s sales success was thanks to the popularity of its brands, including Sulwhasoo, Hera, Iope and Laneige, with tourists and duty-free shoppers. However, the sales increase was nullified by a rise in costs, resulting in a sharp 24 percent fall in operating profit to 76.5 billion won.

The results were grim for the smaller single-brand stores under the group as well: Etude House remained in the red while revenue dropped 23 percent year on year. Innisfree sales slightly increased by 3 percent, but operating profit steeply dropped 29 percent year on year. Espoir saw operating losses once again while revenue slightly rose by 1 percent.

The good news for Amorepacific was the 36 percent year-on-year rise in revenue in the United States, thanks to strong performances from Laneige and Innisfree. Although its foothold there is still small compared to Asia, the company has been making efforts to diversify its global business, which used to heavily rely on China.

LG Household & Health Care, on the other hand, recorded its highest-ever profit for the 54th quarter in a row. Between July and September, revenue generated from its three business sectors – beauty, daily necessities and beverages – was 1.73 trillion won, up 10.6 percent from the same period last year, while operating profit was up 9.8 percent to 277.5 billion won.

The year-on-year jump was even higher in its beauty business: operating profit soared 30.6 percent to 184 billion won while revenue increased 23.5 percent to 954.2 billion won in the year’s third quarter. Its high-priced luxury brands, which were relatively unaffected by the Thaad row, were once again huge contributors.

“With its high brand loyalty, The History of Whoo hit a quarterly sales record once again,” the company said.

  • Amorepacific Group to expand in Australia

Amorepacific Group to expand in Australia

Amorepacific Group, the L’Oreal of Korea, is ramping up its presence in the Australian and New Zealand markets, as demand for Korean beauty products remains unabated. Over the last several months, the company has set up a head office in Melbourne under the direction of country manager Caroline Dunlop, launched its global luxury brands Amorepacific and Laneige at Mecca Cosmetica and Sephora, respectively, and opened two bricks-and-mortar stores under the banner of its popular natural beauty brand Innisfree in Melbourne. A third Innisfree store is due to open before the end of the year.

Amorepacific Group said it will continue to further ramp up its expansion into the Oceania region after having closely studying the Australia and New Zealand beauty markets and their customers for several years. The company noted that Australia ranks among the the top five countries in the world for average cosmetics spending per person.

“Australian and New Zealand customers are beauty conscious; taking great interest in global beauty trends and cosmetic ingredients. They also put a significant amount of time and effort into taking care of and protecting their skin against environmental factors in the region. In addition, their preference for natural makeup and healthy skin has led to a growing interest in K-beauty,” the group said in a statement.

Amorepacific is far from the only beauty retailer moving to capitalise on the booming beauty sector, but it may be better equipped than most to do so. The company is Korea’s oldest and largest beauty business, recording around US$6 billion ($8.5 billion) in annual sales, and has a physical presence in Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania.

“I am so pleased to introduce Amorepacific Group’s global brands … to Australia and New Zealand this year,” Dunlop said.

“These much-loved brands have enthralled customers around the world, and K-beauty has grown into a beauty category in its own right. As a K-beauty leader, Amorepacific Group is driving innovative beauty trends globally. Through Amorepacific Group, customers will be able to experience and benefit from the long-established expertise and true essence of Asian Beauty.”

Innisfree teams up with Alibaba to open new concept store in China

South Korean cosmetics giant Amorepacific’s cosmetics brand Innisfree has opened a new concept store in Hangzhou, China, in collaboration with Alibaba’s Tmall, the company said Thursday.

According to Innisfree, its new concept store features a technology-based shopping experience, backed by Tmall’s new retail technology.

Tmall is China’s largest B2C platform for brands and retailers, in terms of GMV.

At the store, customers can test makeup products by using Magic Mirror, which has adopted Tmall’s augmented reality technology. An automated vending machine that sells mask sheets and sample products will allow customers to easily purchase items at lower prices, the company said.

In addition, smart shelves are installed to show each product’s information on interactive screens.

“With the South Korean cosmetics brand acing in the Chinese market, especially with Innisfree being the only brand to have hit 1 billion RMB ($148 million) of sales, our trial with Innisfree to provide a new retail and interactive experience based on big data technology will strengthen customers’ brand experience and increase their satisfaction,” said Mike Hu, head of Tmall’s retail business division.

Tmall also plans to collect information on real-time product availability at 61 stores in Shanghai and Hangzhou through big data technology to boost online sales and help stores digitize their operations and upgrade the supply-chain operation and offer shoppers an integrated online and offline experience.

“Tmall is one of the most innovative and leading retail platform operators globally. We will strive to adopt digital technology and interactive content marketing from Tmall for Innisfree’s brand value,” said Filipp Cai, head of Innisfree China.

Innisfree, which means “pure island” in Korean, is based on the philosophy of introducing beauty products with natural ingredients sourced from the Korean island of Jeju. It opened its first store in China in 2012.

Innisfree & Dimensi build Asia airport beauty presence at KLIA

The opening at the Malaysian gateway, in association with travel retailer Dimensi Eksklusif, consolidates the Amore Pacific-owned beauty firm’s airport influence in Asia, having already established a footprint at Hong Kong International and Singapore Changi.

Earlier this month, Dimensi revealed that it had secured a one-year contract extension at the airport, as operator Malaysia Airports Holding Berhad concludes plans for an overhaul of its passenger facilities.

    TRENDING BRANDS

Speaking at the official opening of the store, Amorepacific Global Travel Retail Senior Vice President David Park said: “Innisfree is one of the fastest-growing brands in the Amorepacific Group and Korea’s number one natural beauty brand.

“Apart from Singapore Changi International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport, KLIA is our latest Innisfree airport store outside of Korea. We look forward to great success of the brand at this wonderful airport.

Dimensi Managing Director Tan Sri Zainul Azman says the travel retailer is constantly searching for ‘trending brands’ and is delighted to partner with Amorepacific to showcase leading Korean names at KLIA.

    P&C SALES GROWTH

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airports Senior General Manager for Commercial Services Nazli Aziz predicts an increases in sales of perfumes & cosmetics linked to wider product choice and rising Chinese passenger arrivals.

“In the first quarter of this year, sales of products under the perfumes and cosmetics category grew by 29% against the figures recorded in the corresponding period of last year,” he stated.

“Our strategy of collaborating with famous brands like Innisfree is part of an ongoing initiative to enhance the total airport experience of travellers at our airports.”

Innisfree and several other global brands are expected to provide entertainment for travellers in the coming weeks when the annual Malaysia Airports Shopping Campaign begins in July.

“We hope all the activities and campaigns which we have undertaken and those we are planning to implement will eventually lead to the infusion of a sense of place among travellers, making KLIA an ideal and joyful place to shop,” added Nazli.
