Jaguar Confirms J-Pace SUV In The Works

Jaguar has confirmed that the J-Pace SUV is in the works and a select few got a chance to see what the car is like. The J-Pace will be positioned above the F-Pace and it is likely to be underpinned by the MLA platform which will also spawn the next-generation Land Rover and its hardware will be developed with electrification in mind. The company had already announced its electrification plan worldwide. Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving customers more choice. The company is also set to introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles and that has already started with the I-Pace.

There are more cars coming through and this includes the replacements for the current XE and F-Type. Of course, there’s also the all-electric version of the flagship sedan, XJ, which is set to make its mark in the market very soon. the model all-electric XJ which will succeed the combustion version which rolled off the production line for the last time on July 5.

Codenamed Road Rover, the new generation Jaguar XJ will also get cosmetic changes along with the electric motor. Reports suggest that the XJ will be turned in to a five-door sedan instead of the current 4-door body. It is understood that the design layout for the new XJ is ready and the company will soon start working on it. This new design language will also be seen in the future Jaguar models.

Additionally, considerably less expensive ‘baby Jags’ (possibly badged A-Pace or B-Pace) have not been ruled out. Dr. Ralph Speth, Jaguar CEO also stressed that Jaguar (plus sister manufacturer, Land Rover) are definitely not for sale to Peugeot-Citroen, Fiat-Chrysler, Hyundai-Kia or any other motor manufacturing companies.

  • Jaguar XE SV Project 8 Touring Breaks Cover

Jaguar XE SV Project 8 Touring Breaks Cover

Trust Jaguar’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division to come with some absolutely menacing offerings and it sure doesn’t disappoint. This time though, the special division has developed a more restrained version of the absolutely bonkers XE SV Project 8 that adds the Touring badge to its name and gets revised to more road-friendly mannerisms. The Jaguar XE SV Project 8 Touring swaps the imposing rear wing for a subtle spoiler that lends a calm look to the 599 bhp car’s track-focussed capabilities. The new Touring version will be sold alongside the Project 8 and much like its track-honed sibling.

Speaking about the new Jaguar XE SV Project 8 Touring, Jamal Hameedi, Engineering Director, Jaguar Special Vehicle Operations, said, “Project 8 has received outstanding critical acclaim since its launch, demonstrating the Special Vehicle Operations team’s ability to create a compact Jaguar sedan with supercar-rivalling performance. Touring specification extends the appeal of Project 8 to performance car enthusiasts and collectors who prefer a more discreet appearance, without compromising its driver-focused on-road dynamics.”

So what changes on the Jaguar XE SV Project 8 Touring, the adjustable carbon-fibre rear wing that generates over 122 kg of downforce at 300 kmph and has been swapped for a lip spoiler on the boot-lid. The Touring also has a fixed front splitter to “maintain aerodynamic balance,” even as all other aspects remain the same. The special version based on the XE sedan is offered in four colour options – British Racing Green, Corris Grey Satin, Valencia Orange, and Velocity Blue – while the standard Project 8’s decals and stripes are now offered as optional. The big change though comes in the top speed of the car that has been reduced from 320 kmph on the Project 8 to 300 kmph on the Project 8 Touring.

Power continues to come from the same 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 Project 8 motor that can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 3.7 seconds. The Special Vehicle Operations division will hand assemble only 15 examples on the XE SV Project 8 Touring exclusively in the four-seat configuration at the Technical Centre in Warwickshire, UK. The 15 cars of the Touring version are part of the 300 units that were originally announced for the Project 8 and is priced at the same $185,495

  • Jaguar’s Director of Design Ian Callum Steps Down After 20 Years

Jaguar’s Director of Design Ian Callum Steps Down After 20 Years

Jaguar has announced that Ian Callum, its Director of Design, has decided to step down from his position after 20 years. A legend within the company, as well as in the industry, Cullum, has been responsible for creating a new design philosophy and reviving the company product range with award-winning designs for the Tata Motors-owned British carmaker. Julian Thomson, who currently serves as the Creative Design Director for Jaguar, has been now been appointed as Ian Callum’s successor and will take charge as Director of Design from July 1, 2019. Callum will continue to work with Jaguar as a Design Consultant.

Talking about his decision to step down as Jaguar’s Director of Design, Ian Callum said, “I came into this role with a mission to take Jaguar design back to where it deserved to be. It has taken 20 years, but I believe I have achieved what I set out to do. Given the strength of both our products and the design team, I feel that now is the right time to move on, both personally and professionally and explore other design projects. Designing Jaguar cars was a lifelong dream for me and I’m delighted to remain involved as a consultant for the brand.” He further added, “I have worked closely with Julian Thomson for 18 years – he is a hugely talented designer and absolutely the right person to lead Jaguar design into its next chapter.”

Over the years, Ian Callum has been responsible for some of the most popular Jaguar cars, including the F-Type two-seater sports car, the XE, XF and XJ saloons, and the company’s first-ever SUVs, the F-Pace, which as soon followed by its younger sibling the E-Pace. Cullum most recent creation and perhaps the most award-winning model has been the all-electric Jaguar I-Pace. This year the first all-electric Jaguar bagged the 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, and World Green Car awards.

Talking about his creations with Jaguar, Callum said, “One of my biggest highlights was creating XF because it represented the beginning of a new era moving Jaguar from tradition to contemporary design – it was a significant turning point in our story. Designing the F-Type was a dream come true for me, and I-PACE was an opportunity to create something hugely innovative that would really challenge the perception of Jaguar – and its success is a testament to just how far the brand has come.”

Like the cars he has designed over the years, Ian’s journey has been equally spectacular as well. A journey which began back in 1979 with Ford. During the first 12 years of his spent at Ford Design Studios, Callum contribution led to the creation of models like – Ford Escort RS Cosworth and the Ghia Via Concept. After Ford, Callum left the corporate environment to join Peter Stevens and Tom Walkinshaw to form TWR Design as Chief Designer in 1991. At TWR, Callum was partially responsible for the Aston Martin DB7, probably the design he is currently most famous for, followed by the Vanquish. In fact, with TWR, Callum has also worked for other automotive clients like – Volvo, Mazda and HSV and in 1998, he designed the Nissan R390.

Finally, in 1999, following the death of Jaguar’s then design director, Geoff Lawson, Callum was appointed to succeed him, which back then was a subsidiary Ford Motor Company. At that time, for a short stint, Ian continued to manage Aston Martin Design as well and is said to have played a key role in the creation of both the DB9 and Vantage, however, they are attributed to Henrik Fisker. At Jaguar Design Ian and his team, amongst others, also created the R-Coupe, RD-6 and C-X75 concepts. However, the first all-new model was the XK, followed by the XF and XJ sedans and then in September 2012 the much-anticipated F-Type was launched, Jaguar’s first 2-seater sports car since the iconic E-Type. This was followed later by the Jaguar XE, which Ian designed for a very competitive segment. A bold statement for Jaguar using Ian’s established design philosophy.

Talking about replacing Ian Callum as the Director of Design, Julian Thomson, Creative Design Director, Jaguar said, “I’m honored to take up the position of Director of Design, Jaguar. It will be a great privilege to lead such a talented team and continue to build on our success. Automotive design has always been fast moving, but today it is changing at a rate faster than ever before. I’m passionate about ensuring Jaguar Design leads that change, and the cars that will drive our future.”

  • After World Car Of The Year, Jaguar I-Pace Wins Powertrain Awards

After World Car Of The Year, Jaguar I-Pace Wins Powertrain Awards

Jaguar has been riding a wave of success at car award shows all across the globe with its all-electric offering the I-Pace. It was the only car that won three categories at the World Car Awards 2019 and now has won three more at The International Engine + Powertrain Of The Year Award. It has won the best electric powertrain, best new engine and the 345 bhp to 444 bhp category awards. A panel of 70 expert motoring journalists from 31 countries evaluated the powertrain on several parameters including performance, driveability, energy efficiency and refinement.

Speaking about the achievement, Ian Hoban, Powertrain Director, Jaguar Land Rover, said, “We’ve used all the benefits of state-of-the-art battery and motor technology to create a world-class electric vehicle. As well as zero emissions, the all-electric powertrain delivers an ideal balance of performance, refinement, and range, together with outstanding responsiveness, agility and day-to-day usability. I-PACE is a true driver’s car and above all a true Jaguar. We set out to make the world’s best all-electric performance SUV: these awards reflect that, and are fitting recognition for what the engineering team has achieved.”

The Jaguar I-Pace is powered by a 90 kWh lithium-ion battery that delivers a range of 470 km (WLTP) and can charge from 0-80 percent in 40 minutes using a 100 kW DC charger. It is driven by two electric motors mounted on each axle which puts out 394 bhp and 696 Nm of peak torque. The motors are compact and light and along with the transmission weigh just 78 kg. This favors the I-Pace lightweight which in-turn helps it to clock triple digit speeds in just 4.5 seconds.

It has won 66 global awards since it was revealed little more than a year ago, including the 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year, World Green Car, European Car of the Year, and German, Norwegian and UK Car of the Year.

  • Jaguar Land Rover Sales Decline Last Month

Jaguar Land Rover Sales Decline Last Month

UK-based auto giant Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has posted a decline of 13.3 percent in sales for April 2019. The Tata Motors-owned automaker sold 39,185 units last month, a sharp decline in year-on-year volumes when compared to April 2018. The carmaker attributed to the weak demand for its vehicles largely due to the subdued market conditions in China. JLR, did, however, stated that sales of the new Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV and the new generation Range Rover Evoque continued to be encouraging during this period. Markets like the US and the UK also showed impressive growth last month.

Felix Brautigam, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Although this was a tough month for us due to continuing pressures in China, we are delighted to see good growth in the UK and the US. Once again we strongly outperformed the UK market and the US marked its best-ever April sales. This reflects the strength of our brands and continued demand for our unique and evolving product line-up. This month was a historic milestone for Jaguar, with the all-electric Jaguar I-PACE winning an extraordinary hat trick of awards – the 2019 World Car of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and World Green Car – which no car has ever done before.”

He further added, “This is in addition to scooping the European Car of the Year and the China Green Car of the Year 2019 trophies, to name just a few of the accolades for the I-Pace. We continue to be encouraged by the market response to this incredible vehicle.”

Retail sales increased in the UK by 12.1 percent, while in North America were raised by 9.6 percent. However, sales in China saw a dramatic drop of 45.7 percent. Sales in overseas markets also slowed down by 22.3 percent with retails in Europe down by 5.5 percent.  Jaguar retail sales in April 2019 stood at  11,462 units, a drop of 13.7 percent year-on-year, while Land Rover sold 27,723 units last month, a drop of 13.1 percent over the same period last year.

Between January and April 2019, Jaguar Land Rover’s total retail sales stood at 198,101 units, down by 9.1 percent compared to the same period last year.

  • Jaguar Land Rover India Announces The Above And Beyond Tour

Jaguar Land Rover India Announces The Above And Beyond Tour

What could be a better way to spend your day with a Land Rover than taking it off-road! Jaguar Land Rover India has designed the “Above And Beyond Tour” series of events to do exactly that. The series has been designed to give off-road drive experiences to customers on natural trails and demonstrate the advanced technologies that make Land Rovers a potent off-roader. The first event of the series started in Ahmedabad on April 12 across a number of cities in India.

Speaking about the experiential event, Rohit Suri, President & Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India said, “Over the years, Land Rover events have become highly desirable. They are a perfect platform for us to bring the Land Rover brand closer to our customers by delivering experiences that they will remember for life.”

‘The Above & Beyond Tour’ is organised and delivered by a team of highly trained and professional Land Rover instructors. Customers will get an opportunity to off-road in the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque which are two of the entry models in the Land Rover line-up. The first Land Rover drive experience event was organised in India in 2013 and since then over 18,000 customers have shown at the events to experience these Land Rovers.

  • Jaguar Land Rover To Use High-Grade Recycled Aluminium

Jaguar Land Rover To Use High-Grade Recycled Aluminium

Jaguar Land Rover is developing the next phase of its aluminium closed loop strategy with an innovative recycling initiative to transform the vehicles of today into the cars of tomorrow. It’s called the ‘Reality’ project and it aims to recover aluminium from existing Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles to reform it into a new high-grade aluminium to create new vehicles.

The process is currently being tested on early, pre-production Jaguar I-Pace prototypes which have had their batteries safely removed. These batteries enter into their own second-life process which Jaguar Land Rover is developing while the scrap from the vehicles is sorted into various materials using high-tech sensors by Axion. Once separated, the aluminium scrap is melted and reformed.

The batteries of the I-Pace have been safely removed and will enter into their own second-life process

With this project, Jaguar Land Rover expects to reduce the CO2 impact of production while reducing the amount of virgin aluminium required to produce vehicles. Between September 2013 and January 2019, around 300,000 tonnes of closed-loop scrap have been processed back into the brand’s lightweight aluminium intensive architecture, across all vehicle lines including XE.

In 2014, the Jaguar XE was the first vehicle in the world to use aluminium alloy grade RC5754 for its body panels, which contains up to 75 per cent recycled aluminium. Half of the XE body structure is made of aluminium alloy grades that contain an important amount of recycled aluminium content – made possible by a closed-loop manufacturing system at our UK and Slovakia facilities. Of course the company is conducting strength tests for the recycled aluminium to make sure that it meets the company’s mechanical standards

Jaguar Land Rover currently uses 180,000 tonnes of aluminium per year – a small percentage of the 80 million tonnes produced globally each year. It is already one of the most widely recycled materials with 75 per cent of all aluminium ever produced still in circulation.

  • Jaguar Land Rover India To Introduce Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Jaguar Land Rover India To Introduce Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Luxury car makers in India are all set to bring in hybrid electric and pure electric cars to India. Audi has already announced that the e-tron will make its debut in the country in 2020, while Porsche too is bringing in the Taycan next year. Volvo has already announced its roadmap for the country and Mercedes-Benz India is still doing feasibility studies to introduce electric cars in India and now Jaguar Land Rover is jumping into this scene. Jaguar Land Rover is proposing to launch its electrified products in India.

In line with Jaguar Land Rover’s global commitment to introduce electrified options on its entire product portfolio by 2020, Jaguar Land Rover India proposes to offer multiple products, ranging from Hybrid Vehicles to Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) over the next few years, starting from 2019. Towards the end of 2019 Jaguar Land Rover will introduce its first hybrid vehicles from Land Rover and in the second half of 2020 Jaguar Land Rover India plans to launch its first Battery Electric Vehicle, the Jaguar I-PACE.

Rohit Suri, President & Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India Ltd. (JLRIL) said, “Jaguar Land Rover’s focus is to commit itself to a more sustainable future and our engineers have developed just the right products to lead us on this path. The introduction of electrified vehicles in Jaguar Land Rover India’s portfolio is in line with the government’s thrust towards electric vehicles. The company is encouraged by the introduction of FAME-II by the Government of India and it focus on expansion of the charging infrastructure in the country. This is bound to help with faster adoption of all kinds of Electric Vehicles in due course.”

  • Jaguar I-Pace India Launch Details Out

Jaguar I-Pace India Launch Details Out

Jaguar is all set to launch its all electric vehicle the I-Pace in India and it will come here by the end of 2020. While Jaguar Land Rover had earlier stated that the I-Pace will not come to India, the company has now chalked out a plan for its hybrid electric and all electric cars for the country. It was in March last year, that the company revealed the I-Pace and according to the company, it has been developed using physics. The company has taken 4 years to build the car from the concept stage to the production version. Unlike other Jaguar cars, this one does not get a long bonnet and that’s because there is no internal combustion engine. In fact, the shorter bonnet helps in improving aerodynamics.

The all-electric car comes with a sloping bonnet, sleek LED headlamps, honeycomb pattern grille and a wide central airdam. The car also comes with a lovely set of alloys and turn light integrated ORVMs. It has been rigorously tested across extremes of terrain and temperatures from -40 degrees to 40 degrees celcius. With over 1.5 million test miles and a further 11,000 hours of rig simulations completed by more than 200 production prototypes. The I-Pace isn’t pitched as an off-roader, but it’s capable of a wading depth of 500mm.

The I-Pace comes with a whole bunch of storage space as also features. It comes with mobile device charging options aboard, with three 12v sockets, six USB ports and one HDMI/HML port. The electric SUV uses the same radical dual-screen InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system that Jaguar launched on the Range Rover Velar. Additionally, the InControl Remote app gets an Alexa skill that will let drivers ask Alexa-enabled devices for information on the I-Pace’s charge level. It also comes with a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and slots for tablets and laptops under the rear seats.

The electric motors have been designed in-house at Jaguar and are relatively light, weighing about 38kg each. The motors are mounted as low as possible in the sandwich platform and this has been done to ensure optimum weight distribution which helps in making the I-Pace agile.

The I-Pace comes with two synchronous permanent magnet electric motors at the front and the rear axle which have a combined power output of 395 bhp and makes maximum of 696 Nm of torque. It also features an AWD system. A 0-100 kmph sprint takes 4.5 seconds and the performance SUV will have a range of over 480 km. The 90kWh lithium-ion battery pack takes 45 minutes to charge from 0-80 per cent using a 100kW rapid charger, or 10 hours using a 7kW AC wallbox.

  • Jaguar Land Rover wins case in China against Evoque copycat

Jaguar Land Rover wins case in China against Evoque copycat

Jaguar Land Rover won a legal victory and compensation after a court in China ruled that the Jiangling Motor’s Landwind X7 SUV was too similar to the Range Rover Evoque. The Beijing Chaoyang District Court agreed with JLR that that Landwind copied five unique features of the Evoque, which led to widespread customer confusion, JLR said.

The court ruled that Landwind must pay JLR compensation. The ruling refers to the original Landwind X7 from 2014 rather than the more recent facelifted model, which toned down some of the more blatant similarities, JLR said. Landwind can continue selling the facelifted version.

The two SUVs have a similar shape, with the roof and windows tapering from front to back, and near-identical tail lights and character lines on the side paneling.

JLR said the court’s decision suggests China is taking copying claims more seriously. “This ruling is a clear sign of the law being implemented appropriately to protect consumers and uphold their rights so that they are not confused or misled, while protecting business investment in design and innovation,” Keith Benjamin, Jaguar Land Rover’s legal affairs chief, said in a statement.

Western automakers have faced difficulties in China caused by domestic brand imitating their designs.  Also, a lawsuit can be bad for branding if the Chinese public think a foreign company is bullying domestic competitors.

“The ruling is highly significant,” said Michael Dunne, CEO of Hong Kong-based automotive consultant firm ZoZoG. “For years, foreign companies have taken Chinese rivals to court for purloining designs and lost. GM, Mercedes, BMW, Toyota, you name it.”

At certain times, Chinese leaders will allow a high-profile foreign “win” in order to win international support, Dunne said.

JLR had its patent on the shape of the Evoque canceled in China in 2016 after a court ruled it was void because the company had patented it outside China first. It responded by suing Jiangling.

The new Evoque will be launched in China in April.

Landwind is one of the few Chinese automakers that does not break down its sales by model, but industry observers estimated the X7 accounted for the bulk of the brand’s 80,000 sales in 2016 at the height of the SUV’s popularity. The X7 costs from the equivalent of 17,100 euros in China, compared to almost 50,000 euros for the Evoque.

The new Range Rover Evoque will be launched in China in April.

Landwind sold 2,746 cars in China in the first two months, making it the 61st best-selling brand, according to figures from sales aggregator Bestsellingcarsblog.com. Land Rover was No. 59 with 3,342 sales, down 61 percent on the year before. Jaguar was No. 68 with sales down 60 percent to 1,931.

JLR’s court victory is rare in China where courts often side with domestic automakers. Fiat lost a case against Great Wall in 2008 after a court ruled that the GW Peri was not a direct copy of Fiat’s Panda, despite strong similarities. Fiat was ordered to pay court costs.

More successful was German coach-maker Neoplan in 2006, after a court ruled that the A9 bus made by the Zonda Industrial Group was a direct copy of the Neoplan Starliner. Zonda was ordered to stop making and selling the bus and ordered to pay 20-million-yuan compensation to Neoplan.

JLR’s China deliveries fell 22 percent to 115,000 last year after the automaker faced quality problems that caused Jaguar and Land Rover owners to protest outside its China headquarters in Shanghai.

  • Porsche to hike Taycan output

    Porsche to hike Taycan output

Porsche AG will increase production of the Taycan after more than 20,000 potential buyers registered to purchase the brand’s first electric car, matching the entire annual output initially earmarked for the four-door sedan.

“The overwhelming interest in the Taycan shows us that our customers and fans are just as excited about the first Porsche electric athlete as we are,” Porsche sales chief Detlev von Platen said Friday in a statement. “We’ve therefore increased our production capacities.”

The Taycan will be unveiled in September with a price range between the 74,800-euro ($83,866) Cayenne SUV and the 97,800-euro Panamera coupe to compete with Tesla Inc.’s Model S. The car is part of a wave of new models from Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Audi that’ll challenge Tesla’s electric-car leadership.

Porsche is parent Volkswagen AG’s most profitable brand and its success is vital for the group to pull off the industry’s most aggressive push into electric vehicles. VW has allocated some 40 billion euros for electric and connected cars and targets 50 battery-powered models by 2025. To help drive uptake, Porsche is installing fast chargers at its dealerships in the U.S. and Europe that’ll get the Taycan’s battery up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) in four minutes. The car’s overall range on a single charge stands at 500 kilometers.

The model’s planned production of 20,000 vehicles per year is based on a two-shift system at Porsche’s main site in Stuttgart, Germany, and can be expanded if needed, production chief Albrecht Reimold told reporters last year. Porsche also confirmed recently it will offer a fully-electric version of its best-selling Macan SUV.

Interested Taycan buyers are required to make a down payment of 2,500 euros in Europe to register.

  • Jaguar’s first electric car roars into Korea

Jaguar’s first electric car roars into Korea

Luxury carmaker Jaguar introduced the I-Pace, its first electric vehicle (EV), to the Korean market Monday at the Paradise City hotel in Incheon, joining a growing number of EV automakers in the country. The luxury brand’s all-electric sport-utility vehicle (SUV) sports an electric powertrain that produces up to 400 horsepower and a 333-kilometer (207-mile) driving range.

“The I-Pace is a high-performance electric car that has battery and electric motor technology developed from our experience in electric motor sports Formula E,” said Baek Jung-hyun, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover Korea. “Jaguar will lead the future of premium electric cars through the I-Pace.”

The vehicle, originally unveiled in the global market early last year, was delayed for launch in Korea due to the certification process, according to Jaguar Land Rover Korea.

The automaker has prepared charging infrastructure for the product’s launch, installing 52 charging stations in 26 of its showrooms. The company has also installed 52 chargers and 26 fast-charging stations in its service centers.

The fast-charging stations can charge vehicles to up to 80 percent in just 40 minutes.

For maintenance, the carmaker promised to establish 10 new service centers so that there will be a total of 37 by the end of this year.

Jaguar Land Rover Korea is also promising an eight-year or 160,000-kilometer warranty for its battery system and will install home-charging systems for free for those customers who receive their vehicles by March 31 this year.

The luxury brand’s all-electric car enters the budding local EV market that has seen rapid growth over recent years.

A total of 21,375 EVs were sold between January and September last year, up from 13,826 sold in 2017. The Ministry of Environment plans to have 350,000 EVs and 10,000 fast-charging stations in the country by 2022.

Jaguar’s newest offering joins the short list of electric SUVs in Korea, which include Tesla’s Model X and Hyundai Motor’s subcompact SUV Kona EV, both released last year in the local market.

The I-Pace will be sold from Jan. 23 with a starting price of 110.4 million won ($98,300) that climbs to 128 million won for its highest trim, the EV400 First Edition.

  • Jaguar Land Rover needs Brexit detail before building electric cars in Britain

Jaguar Land Rover needs Brexit detail before building electric cars in Britain

Jaguar Land Rover (TAMO.NS) is waiting for more information on trading conditions after Brexit before it decides whether to make electric cars in its home market, the boss of Britain’s biggest carmaker said.

The Indian-owned automaker, which makes just under one in three of Britain’s 1.7 million cars at three factories, is building its new I-PACE electric model in Austria.

The company is due to decide this year whether to build electric vehicles in Britain but, like its peers, is worried about the imposition of tariffs or customs checks after Brexit, snarling up supply chains and adding costs to production.

“That makes the decision this year very, very critical and I don’t know whether we can make it,” Chief Executive Ralf Speth said at the Geneva Motor Show.

London and Brussels hope to agree on a transitional deal this month to maintain free and unfettered trade until at least the end of 2020 ahead of a long-term Brexit agreement to be decided by the end of the year.

Speth cited the need for support from government and academia but when asked whether Brexit was a factor in the decision-making process, he said:

“We are waiting for these kinds of decisions. It goes without saying because uncertainty is really challenging us very much and not only us, it’s for the complete industry.

“You hardly see inward investment any more or every decision is taking longer from every faculty. Therefore it would be … appropriate to get more information about these kinds of deals.”

Jaguar Land Rover store opens at Westfield Bondi Junction

Australia’s first Jaguar Land Rover retail experience store has opened at Westfield Bondi Junction last week.

The new-look premium retail experience store covers 290sqm over two floors and showcases display vehicles housed in two state-of-the-art digital vehicle configuration spaces.

Electronic displays allow customers to “build” their cars on-screen, changing and comparing interior and exterior colours, adding options and also try different wheels and trims to create unique vehicles.

The auto firm said the space offers a different experience to traditional automotive retail outlets, and is staffed by dedicated product experts.

The location will offer a full range of Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles on-site at the shopping centre for immediate test drives.

Jaguar Land Rover Australia’s managing director, Matthew Wiesner, said the new retail experience store’s location puts it right in the heart of one of Sydney’s most upbeat areas.

“We are very excited to see the first Jaguar Land Rover premium retail experience store in Australia and we are extremely pleased to have worked with our partner Inchcape to bring it to fruition, he said.

“The location at Westfield Bondi Junction illustrates how changing market trends and buyer demands are bringing the premium retail experiences to shopfront locations.”

Designed by Centric Architects and built by Reitsma Constructions, the store also carries a complete range of quality, branded merchandise from clothing and accessories to luggage and die-cast models, office items, toys, tees and back packs.

“This fantastic new facility is in line with our own approach to delivering new, customer-centric ways of experiencing the brands, sophisticated environment that is totally focussed on consumer needs and convenience,” said Nick Senior, CEO of automtive supplier, Inchcape.

Britain’s Jaguar Land Rover opens first overseas engine plant

Jaguar Land Rover opened its first overseas engine plant on Friday, picking China for the investment a week after saying it would build a global model entirely outside Britain for the first time.

Britain’s biggest carmaker, which already operates a plant in China as part of a partnership with Chery, said the new facility was part of a 10.9 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) investment with the Chinese automaker.

“The new engine plant demonstrates Jaguar Land Rover’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market, providing customers with an exciting range of vehicles and powertrain options, as well as to its joint venture,” JLR said in a statement.

The site will make the new Ingenium 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. China was JLR’s fastest growing market in 2016, accounting for 20 percent of global sales.

JLR, owned by India’s Tata Motors, is rapidly expanding its production levels and model line-up and decided in 2015 to build a major new plant in Slovakia, rather than expand its operations in Britain.

Earlier this month, the automaker said it would build its new E-PACE compact sport utility vehicle in Austria and China, the first car made for global sale to be built outside of Britain.

Like much of the British car industry, JLR is worried that Brexit could leave its car exports facing lengthy customs delays and tariffs of up to 10 percent, jeopardising the viability of production in Britain.
