Air New Zealands Thrilling Reconnection: Direct Singapore-Christchurch Flights Launching this October

Air New Zealand is set to inaugurate a regular direct service connecting Singapore to Christchurch in New Zealand’s South Island from October 28. The airline has already started selling tickets for this service, which will operate thrice weekly. During the northern winter season, the airline anticipates that it will provide over 34,000 seats on this route, according to a statement released by the airline on Wednesday.

The approximate flight time for this route is 10 hours, and it will be serviced by the airline’s refurbished Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

    Expansion of Services

Air New Zealand indicated that the addition of this new route is a complementary extension to its existing Auckland-Singapore service. It also forms part of the airline’s overarching plan to increase capacity during the peak season, details of which will be revealed in late May.

Additionally, the airline will introduce new services connecting Christchurch with Narita (Tokyo) and Perth (Australia) by the end of November.

According to Air New Zealand CEO, Nikhil Ravishankar, the addition of these three new routes is a strategic move designed to directly re-link Christchurch with major global hubs in Asia, bolster connections with Australia, and revolutionize how the South Island connects with the rest of the world. This will effectively alter the arrival points for visitors and consequently, how they traverse the country.

In the past, Air New Zealand has operated flights from Christchurch to Singapore in 2020, to Perth in 2019 and to Narita in 2015. Besides Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines also offers direct flights between Singapore and Auckland.

  • Japanese “Yama style” goes global

    Japanese “Yama style” goes global

The “made in Japan” words on the label, for many people, have always been a guarantee of high quality. Even after the economic downturn and natural disasters,  Japanese still keep their quality and try their best to differentiate themselves through the attention to details. Their perseverance, loyalty to their country and respect for their traditional culture, have always been their strength.

Unfortunately, today’s fashion industry pursues speed and high productivity. Thus, Japanese’s persistence seems to be easily overlooked. Although this is an irreversible condition in a money-orientated world, there are still some people who appreciate and value the spirit of the craftsmanship in Japan.

Despite the fact that Japan is a modern country focusing on economic development, Japanese also focus on the pursuit of spirituality. There are Buddha followers, but also those ones who believe in gods behind the natural elements, such as mountains.

In terms of geography, 70% of land in Japan is hill and mountains. Since the ancient times, fishermen regarded the hills as navigation coordinates. And for people who lived in the mountains, they saw mountains as resources for their lives, harvesting and hunting were their major activities to live on. Through worship of mountain gods, Japanese express their fear of nature as well as pray for peaceful life.

Today, the Japanese government still shows respect towards mountains. In 2016, the government announced the Mountain Day, 11th August, as public holidays providing a chance for people to get closer to the mountains via hiking.

Functional and practical with bright and unique colors

Whenever a craze sweep the country,  Japanese will always concoct and create the relevant peripheral products and accessories. As a result, the “mountain fashion” was developed, which is the so-called Yama Style (Yama means mountain in Japanese), referring to the clothes that is suitable for hiking.

Yama style emphasizes on integration with the natural environment, usually designed in gray black, dark green, yellow-brown and other earth tone colors. Additionally, it comes with an oversize coat or shawl in relatively bright color, to create a unique style.

    Integration of Art and Technology

On the other hand, while Korean pop culture has been in the limelight internationally in recent years, the Japanese brand is still leading the world due to a number of Asian representatives who have a pivotal position in the high fashion.

Since the 1980’s, Japanese have established a position in the international fashion trend, rooted their perception of fashion and influenced over the global fashion industry deeply.

Due to the fashion industry values on materials, design, and details, Japanese fashion style still has their charm, followed by a lot of people around the world. Thus, many international fashion brands still love to work with Japanese brands, and launched a series of collaborations.

In the recent years, Loewe, which has been known for its excellent quality, also seems to be paying tribute to Japanese culture and tradition. The new “Eye/Loewe/Nature” menswear series is inspired by nature, offering a range of clothes designed for outdoor activities with both practical and functional features as their selling points.

Obviously, the design deliberately takes the ideas from the Yama style. Not only replacing the traditional outdoor clothing’s dark color with bright colors, but also having a great variety of styles and different layers. Thus, customer may easily match their outfit with different kinds of  clothes and practice different outdoor activities.

In terms of accessories, the brand even changes the place of production from Spain to Japan, in order to combine their traditional craftsmanship with advanced technology.

Undoubtedly, they see the advantages and market in the Japanese Yama style to feed  fashion industry with a new touch.

  • The cartoon cafe opens in South Korea

The cartoon cafe opens in South Korea

The interior of Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 in Seoul, South Korea makes customers feel as though they’ have stepped into a cartoon world. Most cafe owners know it takes more than just great coffee to create a successful business. From an Instagram-worthy Wes Anderson-esque cafe in the Philippines to a coffee shop shaped like a Rolleiflex camera in South Korea, a space’s design is key to drawing in customers.

One cafe to have recently received hype for its novelty interior is Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 in Seoul. The eatery created an incredible space that makes customers feel as though they’ve stepped into a cartoon world.

The artistic, monochrome design was inspired by Korea’s hit TV show, W by Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo, in which the characters clash between “two worlds”—the real world and a fantasy world inside a webtoon.

The design of Cafe Yeonnam-dong 239-20 creates a 2D optical illusion, which makes customers feel as though they’ve crossed dimensions into a comic book illustration.

When visitors step through the door, they’re greeted with black and white comic strip furniture, walls, and floors. Even the mugs, dishes, and cutlery look like flat line drawings.

It helps that the owners have created a welcoming environment.

If you want to experience this cafe for yourself, you can find it in the popular Yeonman-dong district in Seoul. If you can’t make it to South Korea, you can still feed your wanderlust by checking out the cafe’s Instagram.

  • Apple sales and profit slip as demand falls

Apple sales and profit slip as demand falls

Tumbling iPhone demand drove an uncharacteristic decline in Apple sales in the first quarter trimming back its profit for the period. Sales of its iPhone range slumped 15 per cent year on year, and although burgeoning revenue from services like digital media subscriptions – up 19 per cent to a new high of US$10.9 billion – and other products compensated, total sales were down 5 per cent to $84.3 billion.

Sales in China slumped 26.6 per cent during the period.

Net income fell by $100 million, from $20.065 billion in the December 2017 quarter to $19.965 billion in the latest quarter. While the company championed setting “an all-time earnings per share record” that was a consequence of a share buyback program reducing the share pool rather than an improved bottom line.

Commenting on the results, GlobalData Retail MD Neil Saunders said while Apple is still a money-making machine, the sales decline “symbolises a company that is starting to run out of steam”.

“In our view, this is something to be corrected, not least because Apple is a costly company to run and it relies on strong revenue growth to drive up the bottom line. As this quarter’s figures show, failure to achieve that results in profit erosion.”

Saunders said the slowdown in iPhone sales reflected Apple’s inability to come up with meaningful and valuable innovations that wow consumers.

“The latest iPhones might be works of art from an engineering perspective, but they are essentially incremental products that lack the excitement and newness of earlier models. With the higher price points of top-end models, consumers expect a lot more for their money. The blunt truth is, Apple’s latest line up of phones doesn’t do that much more than the generations that came before.”

He said the slowdown in China is a problem Apple shares with many other companies.

“The country is suffering from more sluggish consumer demand which has put the brakes on retail growth rates across many sectors. However, the issue for Apple is that this has coincided with a rise in competition from local phones and devices which has helped to eat into its own growth. In short, China is no longer the engine of growth for Apple that it once was and this makes Apple uncomfortably more reliant on mature markets to drive revenues. Some of those markets, like Europe, are also not delivering – thanks to very high price points and consumers that are hesitant to spend on big-ticket items.”

From must have to might buy

Saunders said Apple’s iPads and some of its Macs are good, quality items, however they are simply not impressing the market and Apple is losing its lustre in terms of producing compelling products.

“In our view, Apple has moved from a position of ‘must have this and must have it now’ to ‘might buy this at some point in the future’. Price increases may mitigate this but, ultimately, such a shift can only ever result in a softer sales performance.”

While services are performing well, Saunders said Apple must push much harder.

“Amazon is successfully creating an ecosystem of services through Prime. Apple needs to do something similar by building on its Apple Music subscription and its App Store offering. Movies and television content are also needed to propel sales.

“In our view, Apple should seriously consider a big acquisition such as Netflix. Content is a big growth area and is becoming increasingly linked to devices. Apple needs to play more heavily in this space both to generate new opportunities but also to defend its own device business.”

While Apple remains a solid and financially successful company, he said, a lack of serious and significant innovation means it runs the risk of diluting future earnings.

“Apple thrives off serving a mass market; at the moment its moves to provide more expensive items to fewer people will ultimately do further harm to the bottom line. The clear blue water that once existed between Apple and its rivals is much diminished. The company has time to reopen the gap, but to do so, it needs to pull something new and unique out of its hat sooner, rather than later.”

    Cook’s positive spin

Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered a positive spin on the results: “While it was disappointing to miss our revenue guidance, we manage Apple for the long term, and this quarter’s results demonstrate that the underlying strength of our business runs deep and wide. Our active installed base of devices reached an all-time high of 1.4 billion in the first quarter, growing in each of our geographic segments. That’s a great testament to the satisfaction and loyalty of our customers, and it’s driving our services business to new records thanks to our large and fast-growing ecosystem.”

At the end of the quarter, Apple’s net cash balance was $130 billion.

  • Net-a-Porter launches kidswear with Gucci

    Net-a-Porter launches kidswear with Gucci

After its Gucci and Dolce & Gabbana childrenswear pop-up e-shops generated a resounding “more!” from Net-a-porter.com customers, the retailer is launching a multi-brand kidswear collective. By “collective”, Net-a-porter.com means, quite simply, a tight edit of brands which have all created exclusive capsule collections for the website. Yeah Right NYC Kids, Alanui Kids, ATM Kids, Chinti & Parker Kids, Lingua Franca Kids, Golden Goose Deluxe and Veja make up the list of seven labels for girls and boys ages one to 12.

“The new year felt like the perfect time to launch this collective,” Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net-a-porter.com’s global buying director, tells Mini Vogue. “It’s January – kids are back to school but there’s this idea of cosiness and wanting to feel comfortable.”

The capsules, accordingly, reflect this: cashmere sweaters, comfy cardigans, track pants and trainers populate the new section. “Whether it’s for ourselves or for our kids, we are always thinking about wellness in January so this this an extension of that – it’s luxe athleisure for kids!”

If the list of brands feels more offbeat than the global labels Net-a-porter.com first dabbled in the kidswear market with, this was intentional.

“As an online global retailer known for our distinct fashion point of view, we wanted to take this and bring it to the kidswear market, creating something different from traditional retailers.”

Von der Glotz is particularly excited about the patterned cardies from Alanui Kids collection and the mini-me versions of Golden Goose and Veja sneakers – two of Net-a-porter.com’s best-selling shoe styles.

The e-tailer is confident it has quietly developed a recipe for success: “Our customers have been highly engaged with all of our kidswear pop-ups with most styles selling out within just a matter of weeks of launching,” she continues.

Four out of five of the Gucci products sold were logo T-shirts, and the fifth was the belt bag. “It’s so interesting to see, as the pieces are in such high demand in our adult range too.” Starting them early is certainly paying off for the business.

  • Samsung to introduce S10 on Feb. 20

Samsung to introduce S10 on Feb. 20

Samsung Electronics on Friday sent out invitations to its next unpacking event, where it is widely expected to unveil the next model in its Galaxy S smartphone series, the S10. The event is taking place on Feb. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Samsung noted that it will “unveil new devices that promise to usher in new Galaxy experiences based on 10 years of innovations” in a press release, without detailing what phones will be showcased.

The major question is whether the phone maker will unveil details of the foldable phone that it has been developing for the last few years. According to an article by the Wall Street Journal, the tech company plans to show a “fully functional foldable-screen handset” during the unpacking event. Samsung declined to confirm the claim.

There is a possibility that the model could be briefly shown, like at the Samsung Developer Conference in November last year. A proof-of-concept version of its foldable phone was briefly introduced on stage at the event. The phone is often referred to as the “Galaxy Fold” and “Galaxy F,” but the electronics giant has yet to confirm the actual name for the highly anticipated product.

Some leaders of Samsung’s mobile carrier partners said they have already seen the company’s foldable phones in closed door meetings at the Consumer Electronics Show that ended Friday.

SK Telecom CEO Park Jung-ho said during his press briefing at the electronics exhibition that “Samsung did not open up the foldable phone to general visitors, but showed the phone to me,” adding “the phone is in good shape.”

Park said the phone will be able to offer an improved media consumption experience.

LG U+ CEO Ha Hyun-hwoi also said he had seen two foldable phones during his visit to CES booths, though he did not say whether they were from Samsung. Ha said they come in “various shapes” and added that they seem to be “early stage phones that will enable customers to experience various video and gaming contents newly offered on the 5G network.”

Some other media reports, however, suggest Samsung may only show off three variants of its Galaxy S10 and hold off on its foldable phones until the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, which kicks off five days after the unboxing event.

The Galaxy S10 is expected to come in a basic 6.1-inch screen version, a plus model with a larger 6.44-inch screen and a budget model with a 5.8-inch screen. A fourth variant equipped with 5G connectivity is expected to hit the market later in the year. The 5G-connected model is rumored to come with four cameras on the back.

The Korean electronics giant unveiled its latest Galaxy S series a day before the massive mobile trade show held in Spain, but this year’s event comes about a week earlier than usual.

It may be a move to put the spotlight on its S10 models for a few days before they get drowned out by stories about the foldable model they may intend to show off at MWC.

The unpacking event in San Francisco, where its rival Apple is based, is expected to attract 3,000 people from global companies and the media, according to Samsung. A localized unpacking event will also be held simultaneously in London.

Attracting global attention by coming up with an innovative design and feature upgrades is crucial for Samsung, which reported a sharp decline in earnings in the fourth quarter last year.

Its operating profit in the October-December quarter fell 28.71 percent on year to 10.8 trillion won ($9.6 billion), according to a tentative earnings report the company released earlier this month.

  • Samsung signals big 5G equipment push, again, at factory

Samsung signals big 5G equipment push, again, at factory

Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong’s first appearance in the field this year was to celebrate the start of production at a 5G network equipment factory Thursday. His field visit comes as the company puts more weight this year on the 5G network-equipment business, which involves components used in 5G networks. These components are supplied to telecommunications companies.

Lee and several other top executives, including Koh Dong-jin, CEO and president of the IT & mobile division, were present at the celebration ceremony held at the company’s factory and office complex in Suwon, Gyeonggi.

“The 5G market is a new field, and we have to build competence with the mindset of a challenger,” Lee told employees during the event.

Lee and the team of executives stopped by the cafeteria of the complex for lunch, resulting in posts on Instagram featuring Lee and employees.

The manufacturing line for 5G equipment in Suwon is the first in the industry to be designed using “smart factory” principles. It utilizes 5G connections to enhance productivity and reduce the rate of defects.

The company originally manufactured 5G network equipment in Gumi, North Gyeongsang, but had the production line relocated to Suwon, the site of its R&D center. This was done to help create synergies between the manufacturing and R&D facilities, said a spokesman.

Samsung signaled last August that 5G connectivity is one of its four growth engines for the future when it announced a plan to invest $161 billion by 2021.

The business area is receiving considerable attention from global technology companies. 5G connectivity is vital not only to telecommunications in the future, but will also be an essential component of other, related state-of-the-art technologies, such as autonomous cars, AI-powered robots and virtual reality.

Samsung’s presence in the global telecommunications equipment market is relatively low, with a share of around 11 percent for fourth-generation LTE equipment, according to market research firm Dell’Oro. The larger players include Huawei, Ericsson and Nokia, all with shares of more than 25 percent.

The company’s current goal is to hit a 20 percent market share in the 5G equipment market next year.

Samsung has been expanding its client base for 5G equipment mainly in Korea and the United States. Names on the list include SK Telecom, KT, AT&T and Verizon. Samsung hopes to leverage those client relationships to attract other customers.

The company plans to release the Galaxy S10 in March. It will be its first smartphone to support 5G connections.

Kim Young-ki, Samsung’s president of network business, said at an event last November that the company will invest a total of $22 billion to develop 5G-network technology.

AirAsia eyes Vietnam launch, turnaround India and Japan units

AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes says the group has no plans to establish new subsidiaries over the next three years, apart from a unit in Vietnam. In a series of tweets, Fernandes says the low-cost carrier will focus its efforts on launching AirAsia Vietnam, as well as making Indonesia AirAsia and AirAsia Philippines “very profitable”. Last December, AirAsia signed a memorandum of cooperation with Thien minh Travel for a Vietnamese joint venture.

Meanwhile, AirAsia‘s Indonesia and Philippines units, which have suffered losses over the years, have had their financials incorporated into the Group since the start of 2017. AirAsia has said that it is planning for a secondary listing for its Indonesia operations in fiscal 2019.

Fernandes is also expecting AirAsia India and AirAsia Japan to be profitable by 2021. AirAsia India is working towards launching international services while AirAsia Japan plans to start connecting to points in North Asia.

“We have a great seam[less] franchise. Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines and Vietnam… All the major populations and growing economies. Coupled with two great countries to enable us to cover the world – India and Japan.”

The AirAsia Group previously had plans to launch a China unit and signed a MoU in May 2017. The pact with China Everbright Group and the Henan Government Working Group however lapsed in August 2018.

  • VW new sedan model launched

    VW new sedan model launched

Volkswagen launched its sleek new midsize Arteon sedan in Korea on Wednesday with high hopes that the car will overshadow consumers’ memories of the company’s emissions rigging scandal, which was first revealed three years ago. The sedan is the last of the five cars the German automaker promised to roll out in the local market in April, when it opened up a press event to show it was back in Korea after suspending sales in 2016.

Stefan Krapp, the managing director of Volkswagen Korea, said he is “convinced the new Volkswagen Arteon will be another best seller in the Korean market, alongside the Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Passat,” during the launch event. He introduced the new sedan as its “new flagship model that opens a new chapter of Volkswagen’s design language.”

The latest sedan is positioned at the top of the carmaker’s sedan line up, even above the Passat GT, according to Krapp.

Under its sporty-looking exterior lies a spacious interior, thanks to the Arteon’s 28.40 centimeters (11.18 inches) wheelbase, which the carmaker says is the longest among its competition. The storage space can be as large as 1,557 liters (55 cubic feet) when the backseats are folded down.

All Arteons come with a whole package of driving assistance programs, including adaptive cruise control and parking assist as basic features, in line with the digital trend sweeping the auto market. The cars come in two trims – Arteon Elegance Premium and Arteon Elegance Prestige. The most distinct feature of the Arteon is its quality assurance program.

Krapp said the carmaker’s utmost priority is regaining consumer trust and reaffirmed the company will not compromise on quality.

Volkswagen’s Triple Trust Program, exclusive to the Arteon, offers a bumper-to-bumper warranty for five years or 150,000 kilometers (93,205 miles), whichever comes earlier. The program also guarantees up to 1.5 million won ($1,347) in maintenance costs when metal plating or painting is necessary after an accident. For windshield glass, side mirrors and tires, which often need to be replaced, the company will guarantee up to 2 million won in repair cost.

“This package is the best available in the market, I would say,” Krapp said. He added that in the import car market, where consumers usually sacrifice either style or value for money, the Arteon offers both.

“This is how we will challenge our competitors,” he added.

Though Volkswagen had no sales at all last year, it has gradually been coming back to life thanks to the popularity of the four models it launched earlier this year: the Passat GT, Tiguan, Tiguan Allspace and Passat TSI. The automaker’s market share in the local market is still in the single digits, low compared to good days when its shares were in the double digits, but it managed to reach 5.65 percent market share this year through October and sell a total of 12,294 cars.

Whether the Arteon will help sales is another question, as it’s a pricey product. The more affordable Arteon Elegance Premium carries 52.2 million won price tag, while the Prestige model sells for 57.1 million won.
